Summer 2018 Greetings all, Thank you to those of you supporting our seniors and welcome to those who are considering how you, too, may help your senior neighbors in need. 2017 was another year of increasing need, with our volunteers and staff serving 55,300 meals, up from 53,422 in 2016. The first six months of 2018 have seen the need increase at an even faster pace, having served 3,398 more meals than the same period in 2017. The increasing need for our service brings an increased need for volunteers to deliver meals & welcoming smiles to our homebound seniors. Please consider joining our wonderfully generous volunteers in their effort to combat senior hunger and isolation. Speaking of volunteers, we celebrated our volunteers and we marked 52 years of service to the community at our Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon in April. During the event, we acknowledged the dedication of Evie Lewis, who first volunteered with CMoW from 1971-1974. Following a break to raise her children, Evie returned to service in 1999 and has been baking delicious & nutritious dessert breads for us ever since! We also recognized Cathy Patterson and Barbara Richter for recently joining our volunteer family, delivering our longest route, and for their actions to assist a homebound senior who had suffered a medical emergency. We could not feed the need without the selfless contribution of our volunteers, like Evie, Barb, & Cathy. Based on comparable local wage rates, our volunteers contributed $163,200 worth of donated labor in 2017. Speaking of funding, as demand grows, so does the need for funding. We have operated on a donation basis since our first deliveries back 1966. We receive a small government subsidy of 86 cents per meal; however, it costs us $5.04 to provide a meal. Thanks to your generous support, we have not needed to start a waiting list for service. Your donations are making a real difference in the lives of our homebound & frail senior neighbors in need. To those currently supporting our effort, thank you for dedicating your time, talent, and treasure to furthering our mission of nurturing health, dignity, and independent living among people who need meals delivered to their homes. If you, too, would like to help keep the wheels rolling by contributing to the cause, give us a call at 607-962-7985, email us at [email protected], or visit our website at www.cmowheels.com to volunteer or donate online today. Warmest regards, David Abundant Garden? Keep us in mind!! You can help the homebound and frail by donating your garden fresh produce to Corning Meals on Wheels. S ummer 2018 Greetings all,

Thank you to those of you supporting our seniors

and welcome to those who are considering how

you, too, may help your senior neighbors in need.

2017 was another year of increasing need, with

our volunteers and staff serving 55,300 meals, up

from 53,422 in 2016. The first six months of 2018

have seen the need increase at an even faster

pace, having served 3,398 more meals than the

same period in 2017. The increasing need for our service brings an

increased need for volunteers to deliver meals & welcoming smiles to our

homebound seniors. Please consider joining our wonderfully generous

volunteers in their effort to combat senior hunger and isolation.

Speaking of volunteers, we celebrated our volunteers and we marked 52

years of service to the community at our Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

in April. During the event, we acknowledged the dedication of Evie Lewis,

who first volunteered with CMoW from 1971-1974. Following a break to

raise her children, Evie returned to service in 1999 and has been baking

delicious & nutritious dessert breads for us ever since! We also recognized

Cathy Patterson and Barbara Richter for recently joining our volunteer

family, delivering our longest route, and for their actions to assist a

homebound senior who had suffered a medical emergency. We could not

feed the need without the selfless contribution of our volunteers, like Evie,

Barb, & Cathy. Based on comparable local wage rates, our volunteers

contributed $163,200 worth of donated labor in 2017.

Speaking of funding, as demand grows, so does the need for funding. We

have operated on a donation basis since our first deliveries back 1966. We

receive a small government subsidy of 86 cents per meal; however, it costs

us $5.04 to provide a meal. Thanks to your generous support, we have not

needed to start a waiting list for service. Your donations are making a real

difference in the lives of our homebound & frail senior neighbors in need.

To those currently supporting our effort, thank you for dedicating your

time, talent, and treasure to furthering our mission of nurturing health,

dignity, and independent living among people who need meals delivered

to their homes. If you, too, would like to help keep the wheels rolling by

Gregg Elementary School Donated 350 Blizzard Bags! For the 16th

consecutive year, the students, faculty, and staff of Corning's Hugh Gregg

Bags’ of shelf stable food for our

seniors to have on hand in case we

are unable to deliver fresh meals due

special as they donated 350

colorfully decorated blizzard bags,

the biggest year by far!

homebound and frail in our community long after your

Meals on Wheels is a wonderful way to continue your

generosity after you are gone. The following is a statement

that may be used as a model in preparing a bequest or trust

designation: I give, bequeath, and devise [the residue of my estate], or [__% of the residue of my

estate], or [the sum of $___] to Corning Meals on Wheels, Inc., a nonprofit corporation whose address

is 144 Cedar St. Corning NY 14830.

Corning Meals on Wheels recommends consulting with your attorney before making a charitable bequest.

Subaru Share the Love Grant Funded 1,959 Meals! Thank you for supporting our Subaru of

America & Meals on Wheels America “Share the Love” event grant activities in partnership with Simmons

-Rockwell Subaru. This year’s Share the Love event was especially rewarding for Barbara, one of the

homebound older adults we serve, and Dustin, a Simmons Rockwell employee who served her. During a

Share the Love event meal & gift-filled stocking delivery, Dustin and Barb smiled widely as they

recognized each other from when he was a young student and she his teacher. A happy reunion, indeed!

A few unsolicited comments we received from the homebound & frail older adults you’ve helped…

What a wonderful service. I really appreciate it. Love the volunteers. The people are very friendly. It takes away a lot of stress. It eases the pain in my back and legs. I look forward to the contacts. It makes my day.

God bless you all. I am so grateful for this assistance. Thank you. Great service! Everyone is very friendly. Keep up the good work. You are angels.

Sweet Treats for Easter Week Our

volunteers’ creativity was truly on dis-

play through Easter Week! Working with

Therese our cook, Judy put the finishing

touches on the cupcake ‘Easter baskets’,

Lori completed clever carrot-shaped

cutout cookies, and Jodi & Mike decorat-

ed baby chick cookies. Thank you all for

making Easter week a little sweeter for

the homebound seniors we serve.

We Had a Holiday Cookie Sale! Led by

Therese and our dedicated volunteers, we

held our first ever (at least in recent memory)

Christmas Cookie Sale back in December.

Thank you to all who made it a big success,

including the Ascent U12 softball players and

coaches who volunteered during the event.

Feed the Need with Tax-Free IRA Required Minimum Distribution Charitable Gifts!

What is a Required Minimum Distribution?

Required Minimum Distributions, often referred to as RMDs, are amounts that the US federal govern-

ment requires one to withdraw annually from traditional individual retirement accounts (IRAs) and

employer-sponsored retirement plans, such as a 401(k), once you reach the age of 70 ½. Normally,

when you take money out of your IRA/401(k), the withdrawal adds to your taxable income.

What is a Qualified Charitable Distribution?

In December 2015, Congress passed a law allowing you to give up to $100,000 to charity directly

from your individual retirement account when you have reached 70 ½ without counting the distribu-

tion as taxable income. This type of charitable gift is called a Qualified Charitable Distribution

(QCD). Qualified Charitable Distributions count as IRA distributions and can be used to satisfy all or

part of your Required Minimum Distribution.

Benefits to Qualified Charitable Distributions

The charitable gift reduces your taxable income by the amount of the gift.

Allows you to benefit from charitable giving even if you don't normally itemize your deductions.

May help you avoid or minimize the effect of the net investment income Medicare surtax, increased

Medicare premium costs, the taxability of Social Security income, and some credit phase-outs.

We recommend you consult with your tax advisor to learn more about this tax-free giving opportunity.
