Food Poisoning

Which Germs Are to Blame?

Foods from animals, raw foods, and unwashed vegetables all can contain germs that cause food poisoning. The most likely source is food from animals, like meat, poultry (such as chicken), eggs, milk, and shellfish (such as shrimp).

Food Poisoning To avoid food poisoning, people need to

prepare, cook, and store foods properly.

Many things can be done to prevent food poisoning.

1.One of the best ways is to wash your hands if you're helping to prepare foods.

2.Wash fruits and vegetables well before eating them.

3. Only eat foods that are properly cooked. If you cut into chicken and it looks pink and raw inside, tell a grown-up.

4. If something looks or smells different from normal, check with an adult before eating or drinking it.

5. If you're going to eat leftovers, ask a grown-up for help heating them up. By heating them, you can kill bacteria that grew while it was in the fridge.

6. Check the date.  Don't eat a food if today's date is after the expiration date. Use it before it expires.

The Five Second Rule

Almost everyone has dropped some food on the floor and still wanted to eat it. If someone saw you drop it, he or she might have yelled, "5-second rule!" This so-called rule says food is OK to eat if you pick it up in 5 seconds or less.

The Five Second Rule

Believe it or not, scientists have tested the rule. We're sorry to report it's not necessarily true. Bacteria can attach itself to your food even if you pick it up super-fast. But will your dropped food contain enough bacteria to make you sick? It's possible — and that's why you shouldn't eat food that has hit the floor.
