Greenville High School football fans caught a glimpse of the future on Nov. 6, 2009.
With three-year starter Ryan Smith on the side-lines in an opening round playoff game against Moody, head coach Ben Blackmon piecemealed an offensive game plan together that involved running back Cordez Peagler and wide receiver Michael Watts taking the bulk of the snaps. The Tigers built a 14-0 lead, saw that lead cut in half by halftime, and then Blackmon turned to freshman Kent Riley in the third quarter.
Who promptly went about dismantling the Moody de-fense. A tight contest turned into a route as Riley scored three touchdowns in a 40-7 victory.
But Riley has gone from being the back up to the starter this season as a sophomore. And - the Moody game aside - he’s lacking experience. Coaches believe Riley’s talent, al-though raw, brings a new dimension to the Tigers’ spread offensive attack.
Riley will have a seasoned veteran in the backfi eld to hand the ball to. Pat Bedgood returns for his senior year and has added muscle in the offseason without the loss of any speed. Brandon Smith and Deandre Savage will spell Bedgood in the backfi eld.
The Tigers return three starters on the offensive line: An-thony “Shaq” McMeans, Desmond Dunklin, and Terrance Owens. Marquiste Coleman also started four games last season for Greenville. Princeston Crenshaw, a junior, will be a fi rst-year starter at center.
Greenville lost Mikwese Claybourne and Kamau Sim-mons, two of the team’s top receivers, to graduation. They return Watts and Fernandez Grey, who went down last year in the Tigers’ second game against Carver with a broken ankle. The Tigers like to utilize Grey’s speed on reverse and motion plays. Darius Watson, Tijuan Rudolph and Jay Johnson will also play wide receiver.
Defensively, Greenville lost fi ve linemen, including Class 5A Lineman of the Year Kenneth Carter, an Auburn signee. The new faces include Larry Heartsill and Matt Durbin at the defensive end positions with McMeans upfront along-side Owens.
The Tigers are also replacing three starters at linebacker. Terrance Thompson, Brandon Smith and Brian Smith are the new starters and will be backed up by Marckus Warren and Fredarius Boone.
Bedgood and Demontray Warren are the cornerbacks. Rudolph will play safety and the likely starter at strong safety is Savage. Nick Davis adds depth as the safety spots.
Greenville will miss Stewart Moody, who placekicked and punted for the Tigers. This year’s special team duties will probably fall on a number of players. Ozell Carter will handle kickoffs, Heartsill or Jamall Hamilton will punt, and Hamilton or Bedgood will kick fi eld goals. Rudolph will re-turn kicks and punts.

QB KENT RILEY SOPHOMORE
Riley saw signifi cant playing time in two games last season. He’s lightning-fast and a threat to score from anywhere on the fi eld. But this will be his fi rst year as a starter at quarterback and he’s still only a sophomore. There will be some growing pains, but Riley will only get better this season. And next.
RB/DB PATRICK PEAGLER SEN IOR
Coaches love Peagler’s work ethic and are counting on him to provide leader-ship in the Tigers’ offensive backfi eld. He’s bigger and stronger, but can still boast a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash. He’ll also play cornerback.
WR/DB MICHAEL WATTS SEN IOR
Blackmon refers to Watts as his “gam-er.” It was Watts that Blackmon turned to fi rst last season when QB Ryan Smith wasn’t available. He’s not the fastest or strongest, but Watts comes to work and knows how to play the game of football.
KR/PR T IJUAN RUDOLPH SEN IOR
Rudolph has a knack for fi nding the football when the Tigers need it. His in-terception secured Greenville’s win over Carver last season. He’s also an excellent return man and had a 95-yard touch-down run against Hillcrest last year.
OL/DL ANTHONY MCMEANS SEN IOR
It’s not hard to see why coaches and players call McMeans “Shaq” - he’s big, over 6-2 and 250 pounds (and his middle name is Shaquille). He has the bulk to move most other players out of the way.McMeans will anchor both the offensive and defensive lines for Greenville.

Coaches have a saying: ‘the straw that stirs the drink.’ In Fort Dale Academy’s case, that would be starting quarterback Hunter Armstrong.
Especially considering that the Eagles only return three offensive starters from last year’s 9-2 squad, a team that spent much of the season as the AISA’s No. 1 ranked team before a heartbreaking loss to Bessemer Academy in the semifi nals, 27-21.
But with Armstrong the Eagles have a chance. Armstrong has excellent pocket presence and is constantly looking downfi eld for an open receiver. His skills are drawing inter-est from several smaller colleges and a good season could generate even more buzz. The 6-3, 195-pound senior has 10 career starts under his belt and coaches believe there is enough talent around Armstrong to keep the Eagles in con-tention for a state title.
Offensively, the Eagles will operate out of both the I-for-mation and spread. Bullish tailback Manny Norrell, a se-nior, and junior Brandon Matthews at fullback will start in the backfi eld. Perry Singleton and Sawyer Reeves will spell Norrell and Matthews at those positions.
Fort Dale lost three wide receivers, but returns Eli Black-mon and Andrew Callen. Stuart Matthews has also been thrust into the starting rotation despite sitting out the 2009 season. Junior Mason Stinson adds depth to the Eagles’ re-ceiving corps, but not as much as coaches would like. Soph-omores Taylor Windham, Tripp Neilson and Dow Gardner are being counted on to learn their positions quickly, said coaches.
6-2, 240-pound center Chance Williams is back for his senior year. Joining Williams is Stephen Till at tight end. Till is a quality blocker and receiver. Senior Jonathan Scott will hold down one tackle spot and fellow tackle Pat Thomp-son’s size (6-2, 225) makes for a good point of attack for the Eagles’ rushing game. Left guard is Alex Medley, but Ethan Edgar and Alex Bloodworth could both see playing time at right guard.
In the Eagles’ 3-5 defense, coaches like to have six play-ers to rotate in upfront. Right now, they have fi ve that saw extensive playing time last season: Reeves, Scott, Williams, Thompson and Taylor Loftin.
Miller Owens, Norrell, Till, Matthews and Singleton are the Eagles starting linebackers. Junior Charlie Scofi eld will spell the starters as needed.
Matthews and Armstrong will play cornerback on de-fense with Blackmon at safety. Callen will also play defen-sive back in relief.
Fort Dale returns an outstanding punter in Blackmon and its special teams snapper Caleb Luckie. Finding a holder on placekicks is the biggest question. Patrick Russell is replac-ing a three-year starter in kicker Sean McKeague. Russell, a sophomore, lacks experience, but has a strong leg.
Todd Burkett was an aggressive kick and punt returner for Fort Dale last season. Coaches are working with several players to fi ll that role.

QB/DB HUNTER ARMSTRONG SEN IOR
Armstrong’s greatest strength is his vision. He under-stands the Eagles’ offense, makes his reads well, and tries to fi nd the uncovered receiver on passing plays. As one of three returning starters on offense for FDA, Arm-strong is the unquestionable leader on the fi eld. He’ll also play cornerback.
RB/LB MANNY NORRELL SEN IOR
Norrell takes over the tailback position from departed senior Daniel Nolan. While Nolan was both nimble and a speedster, Norrell is a powerful, down-hill running back at 6-2, 205 pounds. He will be FDA’s featured back in the I-formation.
WR/DB EL I BLACKMON SEN IOR
A senior with experience, Blackmon could become Armstrong’s top receiving target in the fall. But where the Eagles re-ally benefi t is having Blackmon back as the team’s punter. Blackmon consistently booms punts over 40 yards and can drop the ball inside the 10 when neeeded
OL/DL CHANCE WILLIAMS SEN IOR
Coaches have raved about Williams’ work ethic this offseason. He hasn’t added much weight, but he has grown stronger. He’ll be counted on to lead the Eagles’ young linemen in the trenches.
WR/DB STUART MATTHEWS JUN IOR
After sitting out a year from football, Matthews returns and brings a set of good hands to the Eagles’ receiving corps. He’s still learning, but coaches believe having Matthews on the fi eld will only help the offense.

FORT DALE ACADEMY EAGLESNO. NAME POS. HT. WT. CLASS
First-year Georgiana coach Shawn Gregory was hired in June to replace Shane Smothers, which is not much time to lay the foundation for a football pro-
gram. But Gregory went to work and has drawn over 45 play-
ers to both the junior varsity and varsity squads. The new coach spent much of the summer working with players in the weight room and implementing a new run-heavy spread offense similar to what is being used by colleges like Oregon and West Virginia. The idea is to spread the fi eld out and create running lanes against opposing defenses.
Gregory will use sophomore Devin Bonner to operate that offense. Bonner is young, but Gregory likes the tenth grader’s quick thinking. Joining Bonner in the backfi eld is Keon Binion and coaches like Binion’s physical style of running the football. Ricky Everett started at quarterback last season for the Panthers, but moves to wide receiver this year and could also move over and to fi ll the “wildcat” quarterback role in Gregory’s offense.
The Panthers will start a freshman on the offensive line in Shaun Giddens. Joining Giddens on the line will be ju-nior Eric Watson and senior Dallas Harrison. Adrian Paige will also play on the line at left tackle, while Jody House will provide the Panthers with depth in the trenches.
Adrian Rich (6-1, 185) presents a good target for Bonner at tightend. Dexter Smith might end up as the Panthers’ top receiver when the season is over.
Also at wide receiver, look for LaQuincy McCoy, Mikal Grace, and Ethan Hartley to see playing time in the Pan-thers’ four-wide receiver set.
The Panthers will move from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense this fall and Gregory likes the athleticism of this team, espe-cially at linebacker.
The linebacking corps will be led by Paige and include Binion and Rich, who can move into a down lineman posi-tion if needed.
Gregory and the coaching staff also like Paige’s “football IQ” and his ability to read what an offense is doing.
House can also play upfront for the Panthers or move into a linebacker’s role.
Smith will start at free safety for Georgiana and Everett will join him at defensive back. Trey Brockman, Chance House, Rahkeem Hugler and Grace will also play in the secondary for Georgiana.
Binion, Everett and Michael Dunn will handle punt-ing and kicking duties for the Panthers. Binion will be the main kick return man.

Binion was one of the few bright spots for Georgiana in its spring game as a coaching search was still underway for Shane Smothers’ successor. That successor, Shawn Gregory, likes Binion’s physical style of running and the junior should thrive in Gregory’s spread attack.

Everett played quarterback for the Pan-thers last fall, but this year has been moved to wide receiver. However, ex-pect the Georgiana offense to still take advantage of Everett’s athleticism in backfi eld during certain game situa-tions.
QB DEVIN BONNER SOPHOMORE
All eyes will be on Bonner this season as the young sophomore adjusts to running the offense for the Panthers. Coaches like Bonner’s physical ability, but espe-cially like the intelligence he brings at quarterback.
LB/TE ADRIAN PAIGE SEN IOR
Paige is the Panthers’ middle linebacker who doesn’t so much as run to the foot-ball, but explodes to it. He reads oppos-ing offensive schemes well and with only seven seniors on the team, Paige will be called on to be a fi eld general for the Georgiana defense.
TE/LB ADRIAN RICH JUN IOR
Rich is raw athletic ability. His best sport is probably basketball, but Rich posseses a strong upside on the gridiron as well. While he’s not large for a tight-end at 185 pounds, his 6-1 frame makes him the perfect target when he goes out for a pass.

Contrary to popular belief, the McKenzie offense doesn’t begin and end with Emmanuel Johnson, the Tigers’ triple threat gamebreaker who recently com-
mitted to play for the University of Southern Mississippi next fall.
While Johnson’s talents at wide receiver, running back, and quarterback (3,400 all-purpose yards in 2009) fi gures heavily into McKenzie’s offense, coaches are even more excited to have four offensive linemen returning from last season.
Which is encouraging when you consider the Tigers will be breaking in a new backfi eld.
Sir Wallace Presley, a junior, takes over for Calvin Hen-derson at quarterback. Coaches like Presley’s poise in the pocket, but he lacks heavy game experience. Top running backs Freddie Banks and Armond Ball both graduated, paving the way for senior Jakar Adams to claim the job in offseason workouts. Adams is just 5-9, 160 pounds, but coaches like his fearless style of rushing the football.
The receivers are led by seniors Chuck Thompson and Cliff Pugh, who have both moved from the outside slots to the inside positions in McKenzie’s spread offensive at-tack. Sophomore Matt Lewis has wowed the coaches with his speed on the outside. Junior Ethan Faust and freshman Nicarius Peterson will play receiver as well.
Big Jody Halford (6-2, 275) leads the Tigers upfront and has quick feet. Guards are Richard Ballard and Dean Dun-gan, while Ethan Davis and junior Tadarius Gill will start at the two tackles spots. There’s also quality depth behind the starting fi ve. John Windham and Kendrick Ball can play both tackle and guard off the bench.
The “x-factor” is, of course, Johnson. Coaches will utilize Johnson’s talents in a variety of ways, but his primary posi-tion will be outside wide receiver alongside Lewis.
On defense, the Tigers will use four players to man both end positions: Gill, Octavious Mobley, Caneilyus Presley, and Ball. Ball and Gill bring beef at defensive end, while Mobley and Presley are speedsters off the edges. Halford and Dillion Wright will play tackles.
At linebacker, Davis and Brandon Sellers, an honorable mention All-State last season, have good knowledge of Ti-gers “40” defense. Xavier Smith and Adams will play be-hind the line also and coaches think junior Rakeem Ball can provide depth once he recovers from a slight injury suffered in the offseason.
Thompson and Lewis are the cornerbacks. Pugh will play strong safety while Johnson is at free safety.
Dungan plays left guard, but he will also kick PATs for the Tigers. Caneilyus Presley is the kickoff man, while Sir Wallace Presley will punt.
Johnson is the punt and kickoff return man for McKen-zie.

WR/FS EMMANUEL JOHNSON SEN IOR
It’s quite possible that Johnson could be the Tigers’ leading rusher and receiver when the season ends. He’ll play a variety of positions (quarterback, running back, receiver, free safety, punt and kick returner) and coaches will look at several different ways to get the ball in his hands.
WR/DB CHUCK THOMPSON SEN IOR
Thompson, alongside fellow senior Cliff Pugh, has been a starter at wide receiver for the past two years. This time, though, coaches have moved both players to the inside receiver, which brings with it more responsibility. Thompson is a quick re-ceiver with the ball in his hands.
WR/SS CLIFF PUGH SEN IOR
Pugh is tall (6-1) and has gained muscle as well as speed during the offseason. An excellent all-around athlete (he plays point guard for the McKenzie basketball team), Pugh teams with Thompson at inside receiver where he’s a threat to run the ball or catch it.
OL/LB ETHAN DAVIS SEN IOR
Davis has started on the offensive line for the Tigers since he was an eighth grader. He will team with fellow senior Jody Halford to anchor the Tigers’ front fi ve. His understanding of McKenzie’s defense also helps the players around him better.
C/DL JODY HALFORD SEN IOR
An honorable mention for All-State honors in Class 1A last season, coaches believe Halford has the talent to play in college after graduation. He’s big for a center but has excellent feet. Watch for Halford to pull off the line and block during runing plays this season.

This year brings several changes for the Luverne Ti-gers: a new area, and perhaps more importantly, many new faces.
The Tigers lost a strong senior class to graduation, and several inexperienced players will be key in leading Luverne to another deep playoff run.
One of the strengths of Luverne’s team this year will be the offensive line.
This group is the Tigers’ most experienced section as all four returning offensive starters come from the o-line.
Seniors Lonnie Freeman, Desmond Harrell, Robert Freeman and Hayden Shelton each bring several years of experience to the trenches.
Several other players have done well during spring and summer practices and will see time at the position once the season starts.
Tige Townsend and Kentrell Jones will both play at quar-terback, but Townsend, a junior, will see most of the snaps from center.
Junior Ladorian Jackson and sophomore Jamarcus June are going to be the two key players in the backfi eld for the Tigers, and both will play tailback as well as the occasional play at fullback.
Joining Jackson and June will be Dontrell Hall, Ryan Waters and Toddrick Oliver.
The wide receiving corps is a bit of a question for the Ti-gers.
All of last year’s receivers are gone, and many players on the outside have very little game experience.
As a result, Luverne has a plethora of potential pass catchers waiting to step into the spotlight, including Jona-than Chambers, Tyler Best, Kevin Womack, Quez Watkins, Shaq Lowery, Chris McGhee, Deon Brantley, Kendrick Pugh, Devin Pugh and Donte McCall.
Luverne’s defense is expected to be a strength this year, particularly along the front.
The Tigers have no fewer than 10 players that are antici-pated to see playing time.
Bradley Gorey, William Killough, Quez Redmond, Ste-phen Tillman, Jace Sanders, K’Deem Hamilton, Zack Wil-son, Nate Davis and offensive cornerstones Robert Free-man and Hayden Shelton will all play on the defensive front. There is some uncertainty at linebacker, however, as several players have gotten reps at that position during spring and summer practices. Ryan Waters, Ladorian Jack-son, Kendrick Pugh, Chris McGhee and Quez Redmond will see time at linebacker this season.
The Tigers’ inexperience at wide receiver carries over into the defensive backfi eld as well, and many players will pull double duty breaking up and intercepting passes.
Lonnie Freeman will be Luverne’s kickoff specialist, while Robert Freeman and Ben Boyd will handle punting duties.
Ryan Waters, Robert Freeman and Quez Redmond are all vying for a spot as the extra-point kicker.

OL/DL ROBERT FREEMAN SEN IOR
Freeman is one of the largest players on Luverne’s team, but he’s very athletic despite his size. From his position on the offensive line, he moves very well and is a crush-ing blocker on pulls and traps. He’s also a two-year re-turning starter and brings experience to the table.
TE/DE LONNIE FREEMAN SEN IOR
Freeman is another two-year starter who is strong and quick off the edge on the defensive line. He also plays both the run and the pass well. On the offen-sive side, he brings solid blocking to the tight end position.
TE/DE DESMOND HARRELL SEN IOR
Harrell is a returning veteran who plays an aggressive style of blocking at tight end. On defense, that energy carries over, making him diffi cult for offensive lines to deal with, especially when fi ring off the edge of the defensive line.
OL/DL HAYDEN SHELTON SEN IOR
Along with Robert Freeman, senior Shel-ton will be one of the key players along the offensive line. He has great tech-nique and comes off the ball well. He’s also tough to handle inside at the defen-sive tackle position.
WR/DB CHRIS MCGHEE JUN IOR
McGhee is expected to touch the ball at several different positions on offense this season. He’s a fast and elusive run-ner, which will also work in his favor on defense. Despite his quickness, he’s not afraid to get physical and make tackles.

“The Friendliest City in The South”
The Brantley Bulldogs ended last season in the best possible way: with a state championship.
That means that the Bulldogs have a target on their back no matter where they go.
When Brantley won a state title in 1998, the Bulldogs made it all the way back to the state title game the following season.
Despite losing a solid group of seniors, Brantley has fi elded a strong team poised to make another run at a championship this year.
Brantley is also looking to extend its region domination. The Bulldogs have won 16 of the last 18 region
championships - a run that dates back to 1992.Bulldog fans will see several new faces on the offensive
side of the ball this season.Devonte Porter, a versatile player who will see time at
running back and several other offensive positions, and wide receiver Adam Hill are the only two skill players returning from last year’s squad.
Junior Zach Wiley will join Porter in the backfi eld, and those two should see the bulk of the carries.
With only two skill players back, that means the Bulldogs are searching for a new quarterback, and that spot will be fi lled by Zach Johnson.
Johnson is a senior, and despite not seeing much playing time last year, he is still experienced.
Johnson started six games two years ago when Chase Hall was injured.
The lone returning starter up front is Richard Sims. He’s joined in the trenches by Taylor Driggers, a 6-3,
195-pound sophomore, Selleven Burnett, Michael Walker and Justin Arnold.
The Bulldogs have a number of options at wide receiver. In addition to Adam Hill, Cassius Tillis, Chester Person
and Reed Kilcrease should see signifi cant playing time.Compared to the offense, the Bulldogs’ defense is a more
experienced group.Anchoring the defensive line will be Clint Kilcrease, Russ
Kilcrease and Michael Walker.Given Brantley’s depth at wide receiver, it’s no surprise
that the Bulldogs have a pair of players that can fl ip around and be just as effective on the other side of the ball.
Senior Q.T. Sears and junior Jared Wiley will play at cornerback, while a number of different players will see playing time at defensive back, including Cassius Tillis, Zach Wiley, Chester Person and Devonte Porter.
Adrian Howard will anchor the linebacking corps, and Justin Arnold will likely see playing time following a strong showing during spring practice.
Senior Adam Hill will take care of the point-after duties, while Taylor Tew will handle punting.
Jud Owens and Justin Arnold will serve as long-snappers.

RB DEVONTE PORTER SEN IOR
Porter will be one of the Bulldogs’ premier weapons this season. Catch it, run it, return it, tackle it — if you can name it, chances are he’ll do it at some point this year. As one of the few returning starting offensive players, the Bulldogs will need his leadership.
OL MICHAEL WALKER SEN IOR
Walker is a 6-2, 235-pound senior who has some experience on both side of the line of scrimmage. His size makes him tough to handle whether you’re trying to block him or get around him. He’ll be a force in the trenches for Brantley this season.
WR JARED WILEY JUN IOR
Wiley brings a good amount of size to the wide receiver position at nearly six feet tall and 205 pounds, but his biggest contribution to the team will probably be at linebacker. He was the team’s second-leading tackler last year as a sophomore.
QB ZACH JOHNSON SEN IOR
Johnson is a tall, mobile quarterback who has been throwing the ball well during spring and summer practices. Despite not starting last season, he did see playing time which complements Johnson’s starting experience from his sophomore year.
RB ZACH WILEY JUN IOR
Wiley is one of those players that im-pacts both sides of the ball. His quick-ness makes him a tough runner to tackle on offense, and it also translates well into the defensive secondary by allowing him to close the gap on receivers after the ball is thrown.

The Crenshaw Christian Academy Cougars fi nished last year one step short of a state championship, but CCA is looking to be in the hunt again this season.
Several key players from last year’s team return this season, which is an important part of any deep playoff run.
One of these is quarterback Pete King, who led the Cougars on the fi eld last season.
King, who is a senior, has as much game experience as you can ask for in a player.
Joining King in the backfi eld is fellow senior Kyle Furr.Furr was a strong player for the Cougars last season, but
CCA had other backs like Tyler McGough helping carry the load.
This year, Furr will be the go-to guy in the backfi eld alongside senior Justin Thrash and junior Will Moses.
Clearing the way for them will be an experienced offensive line.
Junior Justin Fuller will start each play with a snap from center, while senior Jud Sutley and junior Rann Smyth will also be key up front.
Throughout spring and summer practices, several players also vied for a spot along the front, including Jordan Phelps, Wilson Hord, Matthew Luster, Storm Worthington, Josh Hinton and Nic Henderson.
Several of those players will see playing time this season.
One trademark of CCA’s receiving corps is height.Opposing defenders will have trouble matching up with
Austin Stephens, who stands 6-5, and Austin Brown, who is 6-3.
Seniors Michael D’Arville and Cameron Johnson are the veterans of the group.
Defensively, the Cougars bring a strong group of linebackers combining size, speed and power.
Rann Smyth, Kyle Furr, Jud Sutley, Michael D’Arville and Will Moses will all make appearances at linebacker this season.
Leading the way in locking down the secondary will be Cameron Johnson, Justin Thrash and Shaun Lewis.
The Cougars also feature some depth at defensive line, and several players have had solid showings in practice.
Among those looking for a spot in the trenches are Nick Henderson, Jordan Phelps, Matthew Luster, Storm Worthington and Wilson Hord.
In addition to serving as the team’s quarterback, Pete King will also take care of punting duties.
Junior Austin Brown will be the other kicker for the Cougars, taking care of place kicks and kickoffs.
Because of the amount of speed at the skill positions for CCA, there are several players who can fi eld kicks and punts.
Kyle Furr and Michael D’Arville are two players who will help fi ll that role.

RB/LB KYLE FURR SEN IOR
Despite only standing 5-8, Furr is as tough as they come. Though he also brings quickness to the running back po-sition, he’s not afraid to lower his head to get the tough yards. He is also a versatile player and gives the Cougars several different ways to move the ball down the fi eld.
OL/LB RANN SMYTH JUN IOR
In addition to bringing good size to the linebacker position, Smyth has played there for several years. He’s a knowl-edgeable player and understands both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
QB/DB PETE KING SEN IOR
King is a mature player running the of-fense, and the senior has enough game experience to know what each situation calls for. A quarterback is usually a team’s “fi eld general” and King is a solid leader in addition to motivating those around him.
WR/LB MICHAEL D’ARVILLE SEN IOR
D’Arville has been much-improved over the last year. Coaches say he’s worked hard to get where he is, and that deter-mination carries over to the fi eld where he’ll see playing time at both wide re-ceiver and linebacker.
TE/LB AUSTIN BROWN JUN IOR
Off the fi eld, Brown is a quiet guy, but he turns on the intensity to get it done between the sidelines. His height is an advantage catching passes at tight end and blocking along the line, and it also comes in handy when surveying the of-fense from the linebacker position.

After struggling through the last two seasons, hope is running high in Highland Home with the arrival of new coach Tom Pinkston.
Although Highland Home is Pinkston’s fi rst head coaching job, he brings a solid resume of coaching experience, including two state championships as an assistant at Robert E. Lee High School and time on the sidelines at Prattville High School, Opelika High School and Greenville High School.
This year, Highland Home will use a pair of quarterbacks, each of which brings an assortment of skills to the game, and each also has game experience.
Kase Kelly served as the starting quarterback in 2008, but he is coming back from a broken arm that caused him to miss the 2009 season.
During his absence, John Dunn fi lled in at the quarterback position.
Both are premier athletes for the team, and both also play wide receiver, so defenses will have to prepare for either look the Squadron could throw at them.
Ethan Sexton, Jason Sankey, and Kendrick Thomas will see playing time at running back, and all three have been working hard throughout the summer to earn the starting position.
Chris Wooten and Darrell Greene have also been making a case to earn some carries during the season.
Along the offensive line, Matt Johnson and Jordan Roll will be two of the anchors.
Both players have good size with Johnson coming in at 6-2, 250 pounds and Roll at 6 feet, 230 pounds.
Johnson has developed well during spring practice, and Roll plays with an intensity that has caught the coaches’ attention.
Brandon Powell and Darrian Harris will also see playing time up front.
The Squadron also have height at wide receiver with 6-foot, 2-inch Arlandis Johnson and fellow 6-2 player Lewis Johnson, who is only a freshman.
Many of the players from the offensive line, including Matt Johnson, Jordan Roll, Brandon Powell and Darrian Harris will fl ip around and play along the defensive front for the Squadron.
Coaches say that Ethan Sexton, Jason Sankey and Chris McCullough made an impact in late summer practices, and they are expected to form the core of the linebackers alongside Jake Dean.
Quarterback and wide receiver standouts John Dunn and Kase Kelly will also hold down the defensive backfi eld with Kendrick Thomas.
Chris McCullough will serve as the punter, while Louis Johnson will take care of kickoff duties.
The Squadron have a number of speedy players that will take turns returning kicks and punts.

OL/DL MATT JOHNSON JUN IOR
Johnson is perhaps the strongest player on the team, both on the fi eld and in the weight room. His technique has improved, and he will be solid on both the offensive and defensive fronts. Johnson is also a mature player who gives a strong effort on every play.
QB/DB KASE KELLY JUN IOR
Kelly is one of two quarterbacks who will see action this year. He’s the older of the two and brings confi dence and other leadership qualities to the table. He is also a versatile player who will make an impact even while not taking snaps at quarterback.
QB/DB JOHN DUNN SOPHOMORE
Dunn is the other Squadron quarterback this season. He’s a very talented athlete, who brings a lot to both sides of the ball. Dunn makes smart plays on the fi eld and is among the fastest players on the team.
RB/LB JASON SANKEY JUN IOR
Sankey worked hard in the weight room during the offseason and has gotten himself onto the starting roster. He’s also made the move from the offensive and defensive lines to running back and linebacker. He’s a coachable player who plays aggressively on the fi eld.
RB ETHAN SEXTON JUN IOR
Sexton is a tough player and doesn’t mind getting into the fray. That mindset will come in handy on both sides of the ball. Coaches say Sexton is a physical player who loves to play the game and that fact shows when he takes the fi eld.

RB/LB BRANDON BURKE SEN IOR
Senior Brandon Burke will prove to be a formidable competitor this season. His ability to play either side of the ball is sure to give the opposition a run for its money. Burke will be returning to fi ll the position of running back, inside linebacker and serve as the Lion’s fi eld-goal and long snapper this year.
TE JABRIL BLOCTON SEN IOR
Tall and strong, Jabril Blocton has fo-cused his attention on his speed over the offseason. He and Jarvis Cain are sure to excel and could dominate as a strong pair of tightends.
TE JARVIS CAIN SEN IOR
Jarvis Cain makes up for his lack of speed with an excellent set of hands that should serve him well at tightend.
OL/DL ROD MCREYNOLDS SEN IOR
Rod McReynolds has proven himself as a consistent lineman and is expected to dominate the game with his quickness and maneuverability.

21FOOTBALL 2010
Coach Keith Scissum continues to search for a win at Central-Hayneville after a 0-10 season last year.
It won’t be easy as the team will be seeing a lot of fi rst and second-year players after a substantial loss of graduating seniors.
Scissum plans to build from within, developing players for the future. The future, he believes, is now.
Running a multiple offense package, Scissum has hopes of developing more skilled players over the season.
Since only a few experienced players will be returning this season, the newcomers have been coached daily on fundamentals and position technique drills in order to be consistent come Friday night.
The Lions will see an abundance of eighth and ninth graders vying for playing time this year compared to last, though their lack of experience will be tested early in region play.
Senior linebacker Brandon Burke will be returning this year bringing leadership and a diverse set of football skills. Burke will play offense, defense and special teams.
Senior Rod McReynolds, who is a physical player, will return to lead the offensive line from the center position.
Seniors Jabril Blocton and Jarvis Cain will both work in the two-tightend offense. Cain has good hands and is a sizable target. Tracy Tillman will start at quarterback. Tillman is a senior, but this is his fi rst year starting.
White trying to spread the ball around, the Lions looks to build the offensive line into a playoff contender.
With a little luck and game experience from a number of youthful players they could achieve that goal.
With emphasis on shutting down opposing teams, a majority of the team’s offensive players will be moving over to the defensive line, which may show consistency with the younger players.
What Central-Hayneville lacks in size, they make up for in speed. Using technique and quickness the Lions look to run a 4-3 defense this year.
Burke will play as inside linebacker with Cain and Blocton lining up a defensive ends. McReynolds will hold down the defensive tackle sport with other players rotating along the front.
Burke will also be team’s long and fi eld goal snapper, though coaches are still looking among the team for a kicker.
Central opens the year at Highland Home, a tough opening season contest for a team still struggling to fi nd its identity. The Lions have talent, but a playoff berth is likely out of the question barring some unforseen circumstances.

The Calhoun Tigers will be stronger this season with 20 returning players adding speed, size and depth to an experienced squad.
Senior Juvarne Hinson will rotate between offensive guard and offensive tackle and should provide the team with a substantial line play.
Tandem running backs Quanicholas Taylor and Jonterrence McCray, both juniors, are expected to help the Tigers ground attack with their speed this season.
Though the team only has three three starters from last season fi lling offensive line positions, the players have shown considerable improvement in focus and morale, said coaches.
Filling the remaining offensive line positions with seasoned players, however, will present Coach James Bibb with a challenge.
Players expected to contribute in the trenches are: Curtis Aaron, Jesse McCall, Lenny Lee, Jermicheal Johnson, Zerrington Hinson, and Juvarne Hinson.
But Bibb believes the team will develop a strong ground game with a three-deep rotation in the backfi eld.
On defense, the Tigers were inexperienced last season and it showed as opponents capitalized on Calhoun’s youth for some big plays.
This year, though, the Tigers will fi eld a veteran team - at least on the defensive side of the ball.
Juniors Jonterrence McCray, Jamicheal Jackson and Keldrick Exford and senior Quint Baity have experience at linebackers and defensive end.
The defensive backs will be led by junior Jalen Mason, Jamicheal Jackson, Devarntavious Patterson, and Aaron Gardner.
Lenny Lee and Jonterrence McCray will both be see time punting this year. This will be Lee’s fi rst year with the Tigers.
Though McCray has had more game experience, Lee has shown to have the stronger leg of the two. Both players average over 47 yards a punt.
McCray will also be fi lling the team’s role as its fi eld goal kicker and has been consistent in booting PATs.
The Tigers are in the same region with several traditional football schools such as Goshen, Highland Home, Elba and Red Level. Calhoun opens the year on the road at Keith and will also face Class 5A Wilcox-Central this season. The annual rivalry with in-county school Central-Hayneville is Oct. 29 in Hayneville.
A playoff berth is not out of the question, but the Tigers will need luck on their side.

RB/LB JONTERRENCE MCCRAY JUN IOR
With his ability to play offense, defense and special teams, junior Jonterrence McCray will prove to be a valuable asset to the Tigers this year. What McCray lacks in size he more than makes up for with his power-back-like speed. He is a strong player and opponents will know when he’s on the fi eld.
RB/DB JAMICHEAL JACKSON JUN IOR
Junior running back Jermicheal Jack-son will likely be using the offensive linemen to his advantage. He has excep-tional speed and has the ability to break tackles.
OL/DL JUVARNE HINSON SEN IOR
Offensive lineman Juvarne Hinson is sure to act as the Tiger’s battering-ram this season. His aggressive style suits the team well. His run-blocking skills adapt well to the offensive schemes.
QB/DB DEVEL GOLDSMITH SEN IOR
Second-year quarterback Devel Gold-smith has continued to grow through the off-season. The junior is a double-threat with his arm and running style. He has the elusiveness to be dangerous to opponents .
OL/DL ZERRINGTON HINSON JUN IOR
In his third year, junior Zerrington Hin-son has continued to demonstrate his leadership skills. The other players look up to the offensive tackle/center like an-other coach on the fi eld.

Lowndes Academy has some rebuilding to do this year after graduating of a host of starters on the offensive line. However, Coach Art Sullivan believes he can
reload the group with several returning starters and some fresh faces.
6-1, 210-pound Senior Tyler Love will return for his third year and is one of the fastest and most experienced offen-sive linemen.
Chandler Hudson will most likely start at center. The 6-2, 220-pound Hudson offers size and experience to the Rebel offense.
Also expected to receive playing time along the offensive front will be Derek Pearson and 6-3, 225-pound senior Ben Salter.
A number of sophomores and freshmen will also receive playing time this season, said coaches.
Offensive Coordinator Matt Marshall said special em-phasis on player development and fundamentals has been stressed during practice.
The Rebels are looking to utilize a multiple set offensive attack with returning senior Anderson Casey as the signal caller. Hank McIntosh and Toby King are expected to gar-ner valuable time as well calling plays and directing the of-fense.
Senior running back Chance Ward will see a little more time on the fi eld this year after totaling 650 yards rushing last season.
The Rebels graduated some experienced linemen on the defensive front but plan to remain aggressive.
O’Neal Jones and Ben Salter are likely starters at de-fensive tackles for the team. Jones and Salter will play an important role in keeping offensive lineman off the line-backers this year allowing the Rebels to use their speed to shutdown opposing offenses.
Look for senior Grant Nall to anchor a strong group of linebackers that includes senior Richard Pate and sopho-more Toby King on the outside.
Some of the team’s players may be small compared to last year, but what they lack in size, they more than make up for with speed.
Zachary Green saw some playing time last season and will be returning as defensive back this year.
Returning for his second year as punter, Love can boom the ball over 50 yards on any given fourth down.
Senior Richard Pate’s ability as a fi eld goal kicker will serve the team well this year and has the leg strength to kick fi eld goals between 35 and 40 yards.
The Rebels’ will also utilize Pate as placekicker.Lowndes Academy has dropped down to Class A this sea-
son and should challenge Crenshaw County for the regional title.

RB CHANCE WARD SEN IOR
Chance Ward is certainly going to give the opposition a run for its money this season. Ward has gained a lot of experience as a running back and rushed for 650 yards last year. Ward is the Rebels’ only returning running back that has had much playing time.
QB ANDERSON CASEY SEN IOR
Senior Anderson Casey is well known for his skills, abilities and remarkable speed. He will again prove to be an asset to the team this year.
WR TOBY KING SOPHOMORE
Wideout Toby King received a fair amount playing time last year. Expect to see the sophomore in other more diverse roles.
OL TYLER LOVE SEN IOR
Starting at guard for his third year in a row, Tyler Love has caught the coaches’ attention with his speed and power. He is the fastest Rebels’ lineman.
DB ZACHARY GREEN JUN IOR
Defensive back Zachary Green saw some playing time last season as a junior. What Green lacks in size he more than makes up for in strength and speed.
