Volume 2 issue 1

In 1998 an English referee sent himself off after punching one of the players.

Welcome to our 3rd issue of Football Fever! I hope you find it interesting and exciting and please feel free to contribute. If you run a team or a club or you just want to write about football then send us your piece and we’ll use it.I’d like to kick off this issue by saying how impressed I am with the quality and standard of the youngsters in and around Wilmslow at all our sessions. I think the fact that the children are starting to play and being coached at a much earlier age is resulting in a much higher standard of player at an earlier age.The work being done at Little Strikers is beginning to reap rewards now with several of our first crop from the class of 2010 playing at professional academies! Such is the impact that even Sky Sports News came along to us in October to film our Saturday morning session which caused quite a stir around the country. As a result we now have parents bringing their children from as far afield as Birmingham and Liverpool! Some of our squad of under 7’s that play at the JJB Tournament is made up of Little Strikers graduates. We’re extremely proud of every player that plays for us but the Little Strikers guys are special! One thing’s for sure, junior football in the area has never been in better shape. Little Strikers, where the story begins!

Enjoy Football Fever!

coaches comments

ALEX BROWN (Browny)FA qualified, full time WFA coach. Currently playing for Hyde FC in the Blue Square Conference Premier.

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?Made in Chelsea, the reality programme. Well into it, it’s embarrassing.

Which coach at WFA is the best lookalike?Got to say Erik, the Boss, no one believes me when I say it but he is the spitting image of Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses.

If WFA had a 5 aside football team, who would be on the bench?Matty Toole, his experience in that job role is second to none.

TOM JOHNSON (Jono, T)FA qualified, full time WFA coach and Mr Universe 2013.

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?Got to admit it, it would be Sponge bob square pants.

Which coach at WFA is the best lookalike?Browny as Ben Stiller, no explanation needed. Ringer.

If WFA had a 5 aside football team, who would be on the bench?Danny, he’s always moaning about his ‘severe’ girlie shin splints. Can’t risk bringing him on to bring him straight of again. He’s a liability.

CONOR GLASS (Grumpy) FA qualified, WFA coach and full time gambler. Commonly known in football circles as the poor man’s Micheal Owen.

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure? One Direction. Love those boys.

Which coach at WFA is the best lookalike?Danny Johnson and the Korean guy from Gangham Style.

If WFA coaches had a 5 aside team, who would be on the bench?Tom Johnson, give him more time for bicep curls and much needed calf bulking exercises.

Find out a little bit more than you needed to know about the WFA coaches.

TOM HUNTFA qualified, WFA coach and tennis master.

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?Bacon, Sausage, and egg sandwich in the morning.

Which coach at WFA is the best lookalike?Jordy, Erik’s son, looks like David Luiz.

If WFA coaches had a 5 aside team, who would be on the bench?Matty Toole. There’s no place for pink boots in my team.

MATTY TOOLE (Tooley)FA qualified, WFA coach, two great feet, faster than Theo Walcott., selfless team player. please contact if interested 07865 211 578.

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?Spending half an hour in front of the mirror perfecting my quiff.

Which coach at WFA is the best lookalike?Have to be me as Francis from made in Chelsea

If WFA coaches had a 5 aside team, who would be on the bench?Tom Johnson - its the position he’s most effective in.

DANNY JOHNSONFA qualified WFA team coach. Talks a great game, always injured.

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure? The Overtones, not what you’d expect from a 20 year old lad.

Which coach at WFA is the best lookalike?Connor, spitting image of the referee Michael Oliver.

If WFA coaches had a 5 aside team, who would be on the bench?Would have to be Tooley. Come on mate we all get a knock sometimes. Get up and get on with it. Hates a tackle, not what you want in a 5 aside team.

school ProfileSport is a big part of life at Gorsey Bank, and of course football is one of our favourite activities! This year the Year 6 team has really excelled. They have won many of their games in the local area. This meant that the team was able to compete in the County Finals. Although the team didn’t win the tournament, everyone involved was a credit to the school! Well done boys. The girls team have also competed in the local schools tournament. This was another fantastic Gorsey Bank performance. Of course,

many children who have represented the school have attended WFA sessions, and we are grateful for all their training throughout the year.Away from football, the school have enjoyed taking part in the athletics competition, and have a tri-golf tournament to look foward to. Best of all, Gorsey Bank have won the local lacross tournament and will now compete in the county finals! All in all, it has been a great year for sport.

We’ve only interviewed the internationally acclaimed, world famous Manchester United and England centre back. 81 England Caps and counting, England’s youngest ever defender when he made his debut against Cameroon in 1997, record breaking transfer fees, and that’s just the start. It’s fair to say Rio isn’t your ordinary run of the mill central defender, more of a living legend. We were privilaged and honoured to ask him our and your questions.

Volume 2 issue 1

Questions from WFa.What are your earliest Memories of playing football? On the estate growing up in south London with my mates, pretending to be Paul Ince, John Barnes or Maradona.

Who was your sporting idol growing up?Maradona, Mike Tyson.

Which five players would you choose to be in your best ever 5-aside team?Maradona, Ronaldo, Messi, Franco Baresi, Edwin Van der Sar.

Did you ever attend a place like WFA when you were younger? No but I wish I could have gone to WFA. I played for my uncles team Bloomfields FC where I got spotted by QPR.

What’s the best dressing room prank you ever witnessed? In the changing room, Rooney volleyed the ball to Fergie, Ronaldo was under the table, as the Gaffa was about to strike the ball Ronaldo’s arm came from under the table, snatched the ball and the Gaffa took a massive air shot.

Is the future looking bright for English football?Wait and see. No reason why we can’t win some major honours soon.

Knowing what you know now, if you could go back in time and give yourself some advice what would it be?It tell myself to spend time and work hard on my weaker foot.

What’s your favourite thing to do with the family when you have time off?Go to the park with the kids, get on the swings and climbing frames. Love that.

Question from our players:Harry Whitmore aged 7 and Lewis Royle Aged 8. Do you prefer playing for your club or country? No preference, I love both. Its an honour to play for England, its tradition to play for your club and an honour knowing that you play for one of the biggest clubs and best supported in the world.

George Flemming aged 8 Who is the opponent you look forward to playing against the most?None in particular, I only care about winning, I never think about opponents before a game, only after.

Ethan Cahill aged 9. Who is your favourite footballer of all time?Maradona

James Tomlinson aged 9. Whats the best ever match you’ve played in?The 7-1 win Vs Roma at Old Trafford in the quaters of the champions league. Manager said ‘it was a once in a lifetime game when everything goes right’

William Murray aged 9. If you were the manager of Man U which players would you buy to improve the squad?RONALDO. No one else, just Ronaldo.

Ben Tomlinson aged 9. If you were invisible for the day what would you do?Go and watch all rival training sessions and report back to Fergie.

Joseph Barber aged 7. Harry Crouch aged 6. What do you eat and drink before a game and at half time?Chicken and pasta plus a side of mashed potato 3 hours before with strawberry yoghurt/honey, banana, water, energy drinks and coffee. Lots of energy type drinks. Half time - water and energy drinks.

Ban Hamilton-Ryan aged 8. What one item would you choose to have with you on a desert island?Just a Football.

RIO FERDINAND, thank you very much for your answers and insight into the life and mind of a role mode/idol/hero.

WFA TEAMS REVIEW

There’s nothing better than a Saturday morning trip to the Soccerdome to watch these boys go toe to toe with some of the best footballers in the area. A lot has happened since the last issue of football fever. The tournaments over the summer were a massive success, not just in regards to result but also the organisation and the experience gained for the boys who competed. Its fair to say they more than held their own, gaining many fans along the way.

For what was then the under 7’s (now the under 8’s) the tournaments were very successful reaching the semi finals, unfortunately just missing out on a final after a dubious point awarding system. Well done to all the boys and thanks to the parents for your on going support. Now onto the current crop, The evening sessions are the ones any coach looks forward to, great players, great attitudes and great entertainment.

The under 8’sTry and stop them at your peril!Through all four teams that compete at the soccer dome, these boys never fail to impress. With an emphasis on team and individual performance more so than the match result, you can see the players flourish. Each week it’s exciting, it’s nerve wrecking but it’s also a pleasure to watch these ever developing youngsters put into practice everything they’ve learnt at training and their back yards. As it was last year, the top teams at the Soccerdome always include the WFA boys, the A team with almost 100% win record and the others not far behind. ‘Its becoming slightly addictive.’

Star Trainers: James Wright, Josh ChalkMVP’s: Harley Dullaghan, Harry Whitmore.

As I’m sure anyone who has been involved with junior football will agree, there’s one thing that can always be garanteed, inconsistent performances, and as long as this is understood, what we can ensure is that the players will continue to enjoy themselves and learn something new every time they play. Enjoyment, development and progression. Go on the Boys!!

WFA Team Training nights:Monday 6pm - 7pm Year 4 and above.Tuesdays 5.30 - 7.30 year 3.Wednesdays 5.30 - 7.30 year 2Thursday 5.30 - 6.30 Year 1’s and Rec.

The under 7’sWhat can we say? Its hard to describe the potential of these guys.As with the Under 8’s all four Under 7’a teams are highly regarded at the Soccerdome and results are more than often very positive. The most impressive attribute of all four teams is the way they play the game. Not just looking to run with the ball but always looking to make the best decision for the team, more often than not, resulting in some very easy on the eye passing football. meet The parentsWhat sport did you play when you were younger?Football, squash and was quite big on rugby league, competing for the Stockport district schools team. What’s different today for kids playing sport compared to when you were younger? All the coaching. When we were younger we were given a massive pitch and left to our own devices. Now it’s all much better, small sided games and better coaching. If you could choose three dinner guests dead or alive, who would they be?Eric Cantona for comedy, Sir Fergie because he’s an absolute United legend and Charlotte Jackson of Sky Sports News for something to look at.

STEVE HEWITT Father of Cieran

KATE NEWMAN Mother of Jo Jo and Ben

DAWN PATTEN Mother of Matty and

Freddie

What sport did you play when you were younger?Tennis and netball were the main ones, playing tennis for the county and captaining the netball team.

Who were your role models growing up?My Dad has to be one, ex Rochdale and Hyde United player, I’ve got a room full of newspaper articles of his that are great to look back on.

What’s different today for kids playing sport compared to when you were younger? They start being scouted a lot younger these days, like Joseph at age 4, and better coaching opportunities like WFA

If you could choose three dinner guests dead or alive, who would they be?Balotelli, Beckham for his face, and Keith Lemon for comedy.

What sport did you play when you were younger?Gymnastics was my main sport, other than that I just played the usual, netball, hockey - which helps understand football a little easier these days.

What’s different today for kids playing sport compared to when you were younger? We used to go out and play sport in the park then walk back alone in the dark without care or worry... slightly different these days.

If you could choose three dinner guests dead or alive, who would they be?Bill Shankly, I’m an LFC fan, I’d also like to quiz him on the ‘football more important than life’ quote. Michael Parkinson, for some name dropping stories and anecdotes, and John Bishop for scouse banter.

The scholars A quick look and a brief insight into the next generation of WFA Coaches, most of whom were once coached at WFA themselves.

Like the other scholars, Oli lights up the stage for Wilmslow Town FC, and is now passing on his skills to the younger kids. Oli’s a top young coach and has perfected the tidying up skills essential to his job role.

BESCO! What can we say. Banter-less but brilliant. Tom has been with us for nearly two years now and has proved his worth. Maturing into a fine young coach. He and Jordy have built the little strikers pitch up to what it is today.

No one’s quite sure what Patrick does at WFA, but he turns up every Saturday. A key figure in his Wilmslow Town Team, he is now also a top young coach and has big future with us.Compares himself to Fernando Torres, enough said. Patrick Murray

Sam Horton

With the help of Tom, Jordy has turned the Little Strikers pitch into the place to be on a Saturday. Being the boss’s son he’s got coaching in his veins, evident in the kids faces and massive turn outs. Part time Fellaini hair stunt double.Jordy Garner

Oli Metah Tom Beschoby

Mr Professional. Despite being accused as having the most annoying Player of the Week speeches, Sam is a brilliant young coach and is tipped for big things at WFA. Helping with the Yr 1 and 2’s on Saturdays learning his trade all the time.

James Antrobus

James has been with us for nearly a year now and has developed into a important coach at WFA. He compares himself to Petr Cech, the Chelsea goalie, because he’s brave! Your right James your definitely brave to have that hair do.

Management of Acute soft Tissue InjuriesA soft tissue injury is a connective tissue injury that may involve muscle, ligament, tendon, capsular structures and/or cartilaginous structures. It can be argued that the most important period in terms of minimising the effects of an injury, and helping to make the rehabilitation process easier, is how that injury is managed in the first 48 hours. There is no doubt that injuries and the subsequent prognosis for recovery can be made longer with inappropriate management during this time.  Below is a guide which has been used in sport to inform players as to how they should manage their symptoms from the time their injury occurs.

Things TO DO: The PRICE principle: Protection - immobilize injury wherever possible, if appropriate this may include the use of crutches, slings or a brace Rest - as guided by your physiotherapist Ice - treat 20 minutes every two hours with an ice pack wrapped in a damp towel to avoid burn Compression - with strapping or tubi-grip, DO NOT wear over night Elevation - keep injured area above the level of your heart wherever possible.

These guidelines should be applied only after the patient has been examined and the possibility of severe injury has been ruled out.  DO NOT hesitate to seek the advice of a qualified physiotherapist who can provide further information about how to manage your injury. If a severe injury is suspected, the injured person should be referred immediately to either an A/E department or an experienced practitioner in the management of soft tissue injuries (In practice this usually means a chartered physiotherapist with experience in the treatment of sports injuries or a sports medicine practitioner).  Signs of severe injury include: • severe pain which does not subside • immediate and profuse swelling • deformity • extreme loss of function • guarding, or unusual or false motion • noises (grating / cracking) at injury site.If in doubt, consult an expert!

&An interview with Chicker and Kicker:

Gaynor richardsWhen you’re not Chicking and Kicking, what do you do for a living?I work with children in various capacities.

Apart from Erik’s Greek God like physique, what do you like most about Chicks & Kicks?I like the fun, new skills, new friends and socialising on the yearly breaks.

If you could choose one Chicker and Kicker to be on your team in a cup final, who would it be and why?Heather, because she’d keep the opposition distracted with her chat.

If you could compare yourself to a footballer, who would it be and why?Ryan Giggs, because he’s the eldest on the team like myself.
