Robert Morris Football Game Notes

Top Story - The Robert Morris University football team returns home for the annual battle with local rival Duquesne this Saturday, Nov. 3, at 3:30 p.m. at Joe Walton Stadium in a game that will air live on ROOT Sports, ESPN3 and Fox College Sports. RMU gained more yards per play and scored 13 points in the final eight minutes last weekend at Wagner, but it was not enough to overcome a Seahawk team that is tied for the Northeast Conference (NEC) lead in league wins. Jeff Sinclair needs to post 180 yards of total offense to move into second place all-time at Robert Morris in that category. The Colonials have won each of their past two home games, and the outcome of both games was in doubt until the final play. Nolan Nearhoof leads the NEC in sacks per game and ranks 11th nationally in that category. Nearhoof also needs six tackles to reach 200 for his career. RMU will look to claim its third straight win at home against Duquesne after scoring exactly 34 points in each of the past two such meetings. After playing the Dukes, Robert Morris will play its road finale next weekend against Sacred Heart Nov. 10. Quick Stat of the Afternoon - Saturday’s contest is part of the conference’s NEC-TV package and will be broadcast live on ROOT Sports. That fact should bode well for the Colonials based on recent history. Robert Morris is 5-1 (.833) in its last six games on NEC-TV, including 3-0 (1.000) at home. The Colonials have averaged 28.83 points per game in these half-dozen contests, including 32.0 at home, while allowing just 16.33 points per game over these contests, including conceding only 12.67 points per game at home. Additionally, each of the past four times the Colonials have hosted Duquesne the game has aired on television, and RMU holds a 3-1 (.750) edge in these contests. Robert Morris is 7-4 (.636) in NEC-TV games since the 2005 season, including a mark of 4-2 (.667) at Joe Walton Stadium. Senior quarterback Jeff Sinclair has been under center for each of RMU’s five NEC-TV games since his career commenced. Saturday’s Opponent - Robert Morris has played its crosstown rival in 13 of its previous 18 sea- sons of existence, including each of the past nine years, with the Dukes holding a slim, 7-6, advantage. The home team is 10-3 (.769) in the series and has won each of the past four meet- ings. RMU claimed a 34-11 decision the last team these teams met at Joe Walton Stadium (10/30/10) as current RMU assistant coach Myles Russ (2007-2010) ran for 154 yards to become the Colonials' all-time leading rusher. For more information on the all-time series against Duquesne, including the last game recap, please see page four of today’s game notes. On This Date (Nov. 3) in Robert Morris Football History - Robert Morris won the only prior home game it played on November 3 as the Colonials took down Stony Brook, 45-19. It wasn’t all clear sailing as RMU trailed, 13-7, early in the second quarter before scoring four consecutive touch- downs to take a 35-13 lead. The Colonials gained a whopping 545 yards of total offense, a single- game school record that still stands, and were well-balanced between the run (35 plays) and the pass (38 plays). Tim Levcik (1998-2001) completed 26-of-35 passes for 363 yards, the second- highest single-game total in RMU history, and also tossed four touchdowns to four different receivers. Stephen McNair (2001-02) caught five passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. Sam Dorsett (1999-2003) ran for 152 yards on 28 carries, averaging more than five yards per rush. Reggie Chambers (1998-2001) posted 11 tackles, including one tackle for loss, while Corey Oaks (2001-02) intercepted a Seawolves’ pass to set up a Colonial scoring drive. Head Coach Joe Walton19th Season - Pittsburgh ’57

At the forefront of the football renaissance at Robert Morris University throughout its 19-year history is Joe Walton, who has built the Colonials from a fledgling program into one of the top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in the region. The one constant associated with the program, Walton was named the first head coach July 27, 1993. He started the program from scratch, completing every-thing from hiring assistant coaches to purchasing equipment to recruiting student-athletes for the team’s inaugural season in 1994. Walton’s fingerprints are all over the football pro-gram, and to prove that, RMU has played its home games since 2005 in a stadium that bears his name. During his tenure, Walton has led Robert Morris to the

first Northeast Conference championship in 1996, guided RMU to a perfect 10-0 season in 2000 and in 2010 helped lead the Colonials to the NEC’s inaugural bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs with their league-high sixth regular-season championship. “It’s hard to believe,” Walton speaks on how fast time has elapsed. “I’ve said this many times before, and I mean it when I say that this situation is one of the best things that has ever happened to me in my life. It happened at the right time. Before this position became available, I felt I was too young to quit coaching, but I wasn’t anxious to get back into pro football. When this came along, it was the per-fect fit. This situation was the perfect opportunity for me to continue to do what I like to do, and I’ve loved every minute of it.” Under Walton’s tutelage, the Colonials have claimed outright NEC regular-season titles three times (1997, 1999, 2000) while sharing three others (1996, 1998, 2010). Walton led Robert Morris to back-to-back ECAC Bowl victories in 1996 and 1997, and in 1999 and 2000 he guided RMU to a pair of NCAA I-AA mid-major national crowns according to Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette. In 2010, Walton added to his legacy by engineering the Colonials on an eight-game winning streak for a share of the NEC regular-season title and the NEC’s first bid in the NCAA FCS Playoffs. In the process he picked up his 100th career victory in the collegiate ranks.

Duquesne Series Quick OutsSaturday’s contest marks the fifth time the Colonials and Dukes will square off as conference opponents ... The series is tied, 2-2, since Duquesne became an associate member of the Northeast Conference in football … Robert Morris has actually outscored the Dukes, 309-307, over the duration of the series even though it has lost seven of the 13 meetings … RMU has averaged 27.4 points per game at home against Duquesne, including posting 34 points in each of the past two meetings at Joe Walton Stadium … Jeff Sinclair made his first collegiate start against Duquesne (10/3/09) and finished 20-for-36 passing for 219 yards while tossing two touch-downs ... Sinclair’s 20 completions against the Dukes in 2009 are the most by a true freshman making his first collegiate start in a Robert Morris uniform.

Game #11Duquesne 45, Robert Morris 10November 19, 2011 / Pittsburgh, Pa.

Rooney Field (Attendance: 2,410) - Robert Morris concluded its 2011 campaign with its sixth straight loss, a 45-10 setback at crosstown rival Duquesne. Robert Morris scored the only points in the first 15 minutes of action, as sophomore quarter-back Tyler Forbes, RMU's third starting quarterback in as many weeks, connected with senior wide receiver Jamie Cobb for a 35-yard touchdown pass. Duquesne rallied to tie the score, 7-7, when quarterback Sean Patterson hit Isaac Spragg with a five-yard touchdown pass. It was one of three touchdowns scored by the Dukes in the final 10:31 of the first half as Duquesne took a 21-7 lead into the break. Brooks Roorback would score on a six-yard touchdown run that gave the Dukes a 14-7 lead, and Patterson hit wide receiver Connor Dixon with a 12-yard scoring strike with just 15 seconds left before intermission to give Duquesne a 14-point lead. Patterson and Dixon hooked up for two more scores in the second half, one from 45 yards late in the third quarter and one from 43 yards with 3:35 to play that settled the score at 45-10. In addition to leading the Duquesne ground game with 123 yards rushing, Patterson com-pleted 17 of his 27 passes for 240 yards and four touchdowns. Dixon hauled in five passes for 117 yards and three scores, while Spragg finished with seven catches for 74 yards and a touchdown. Forbes finished 10-for-27 passing for 143 yards, a touchdown and an interception for Robert Morris, with Cobb leading the receiving corps with three receptions for 70 yards and a score. Freshman running back Grayling Sanders compiled 92 yards rushing on 18 carries, an aver-age of 5.1 yards per rush, while redshirt freshman Deontae Howard carried four times for 25 yards. Senior defensive back Alex Tarr and sophomore defensive lineman Chris Thompkins tied for game-high honors in tackles with nine.Notes: Senior tight end Shadrae King finished with a pair of receptions, closing out his career with at least one reception in each of his final 30 games ... King finishes his career as RMU's all-time leader in receptions (145), tied with former wide receiver Tyjuan Massey (2002-05) for the career record in touchdown catches (21) and second all-time in receiving yards (1,698) ... Senior wide receiver Anthony Coleman posted 139 all-purpose yards against the Dukes to finish his career with 3,701, tied for fourth all-time at Robert Morris with inaugural running back Tim Hall (1994-95) ... Forbes and wide receiver Rickeem Jackson each received their first career starts against the Dukes, bringing the number of Colonials to be in the starting lineup for the first time in 2011 to 27.

Robert Morris Quick FactsLast Time Out - RMU gained more yards per play than Wagner and had fewer than half of the Seahawks’ total penalty yards, but that was not enough for the Colonials to earn their fourth-consecutive victory at Wagner … Jeff Sinclair became just the third Colonial in history to surpass 6,000 career yards of total offense and the fifth to reach the 400-completion plateau … True freshman D.J. Hayes registered his first-career touchdown reception as he hauled in a 38-yard catch in stride in the end zone … Senior linebacker Brad Banas posted a game-high 10 tackles and added a sack to lead a Robert Morris defense that allowed just one defensive touchdown.

Sack Attack - RMU defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof had a memorable day Oct. 13 at Bryant as he broke RMU’s all-time program record for career sacks. Nearhoof tied his single-game high with three and, in the process, became the first Colonial ever to sur-pass 20 sacks and currently has 23.5. Ray Gensler (2003-06) previously held the record with 19. Nearhoof claimed his second-consecutive All-NEC First Team honor in 2011 despite missing two games due to injury. In addition to topping the program in sacks, Nearhoof currently ranks as RMU's active leader in tackles (194) and tackles for loss (30.5). Nearhoof leads the NEC lead in sacks per game and ranks 11th nationally.

Punt It - Sophomore punter Tony LaMancusa had one of his best performances in a Colonial uniform last week at Wagner. He averaged 43.2 net yards per punt as the Seahawks did not have a single punt return yard on the day. Three of LaMancusa’s four punts traveled at least 41 yards with the lone exception being a punt that was downed at the host’s 1-yard line. He tied his career high with a 50-yard punt in the second quar-ter, and three of his four punts pinned Wagner inside its own 15-yard line.

First Scores - Freshman wide receiver D.J. Hayes caught a 38-yard pass for his first-career touchdown last week @ Wagner one week after fullback Ryan Thermil opened the scoring against CCSU with his first-career score. Two weeks ago at Bryant, fellow fullback Nick Groat and linebacker Brad Banas each notched their first-career TD's.

Record Threatened - Senior quarterback Jeff Sinclair is threatening a notable single-season school record. Sinclair is averaging 226.8 yards of total offense per game thus far in 2012, a figure that would currently rank second in RMU history and is fewer than two yards shy of Tim Levcik’s (1998-2001) record of 228.2. Sinclair has topped 250 yards of total offense three times this season, and RMU is 2-1 (.667) in those games.

Winner, Winner - Senior quarterback Jeff Sinclair led both the game-tying and game-winning drives Oct. 20 against CCSU to rally RMU to a comeback victory. In doing so, Sinclair tied the Colonials’ program record for most game-winning drives in the fourth quarter (or overtime) of a career with five. Erik Cwalinski (2005-08) also had five such drives. Additionally, Cwalinski and Sinclair are the only two Colonials to lead Robert Morris on a game-winning drive in at least three different years.

Triple Digits - Junior Evan Taylor has rushed for at least 100 yards in three of the team’s past four games. Taylor, a converted defensive back, has run for 506 yards on his last 92 carries, an average of 5.5 yards per rush during that span. He topped the century mark @ Saint Francis (133), @ Bryant (105) and vs. Central Connecticut State (126).

Experience Counts - When taking a look down the Robert Morris roster, the Colonials seem to have a bevy of experience at the defensive line position. Defensive linemen R.J. Cook, Farren Mason, Sam Miller, Steve Mitchell, Nolan Nearhoof and Chris Thompkins have combined for 107 starts during their time at RMU. Due to injuries, each member of the sextet saw starting assignments during the 2011 season. Mitchell and Nearhoof lead the way with 30 starts each followed by Miller with 25, although the first 22 of Miller's career actually came when he was a member of the offensive line. Mason is next in line, having earned the nod 17 times in his career.

Start Me Up - Steve Mitchell enters Saturday’s game with the most consecutive starting assignments of any active Colonial. Mitchell has started 30 straight games at defensive end. A.J. Dalton is second in that category with 25 straight starts on the offensive line. Jeff Sinclair is the Colonials’ active leader in overall starts with 33.

Game #8 • Wagner 23, Robert Morris 13October 27, 2012 • Staten Island, N.Y.

Hameline Field (Attendance: 2,072) - Robert Morris scored two touch-downs in the final eight minutes and recovered an ensuing on-side kick but could not complete its comeback as it fell to Wagner, 23-13. RMU gained more yards per play than Wagner and had fewer than half of the Seahawks’ total penalty yards, but that was not enough for the Colonials to earn their fourth-consecutive victory at Wagner. Senior Jeff Sinclair threw for 238 yards and two touchdowns, tal-lying the fifth multi-TD game in his last six outings. Wagner is the national leader in kickoff return yardage, and it showed why on the game’s opening play as Otis Wright returned a kickoff 90 yards for a score. RMU had a solid opening drive as it started on its own 25-yard line and advanced the ball to the Seahawks’ 8-yard line, but Wagner made another big special teams play and blocked a field goal try. Wagner followed up with a 12-play, 79-yard drive that allowed the hosts to tack on a field goal although the Colonial defense did well to prevent a touchdown as the Seahawks had first-and-goal at one point. Wagner concluded the half with a 9-play, 48-yard drive as David Lopez’s field goal drilled the left upright but still snuck through. After three punts, Wagner produced a 17-play, 89-yard drive that helped the Seahawks extend their lead. RMU stuffed Wagner on two goal-line rushes and looked as if they might have held Wagner again, but the officials ruled that the ball just broke the goal line. After the game’s first turnover, Wagner had the ball on RMU’s 13-yard line, but the Colonial defense did well to force a field goal try. The RMU offense truly found its groove on its next possession as it went 76 yards on just five plays, a drive which was capped off by a 39-yard pass from Sinclair to junior wide receiver Donte Jeter. The Colonials forced a punt after five plays on the Seahawks’ next drive, and RMU took over on its own 14-yard line. Robert Morris moved the ball to near midfield on a 31-yard pass to senior William Quarles, and the guests would tighten the proceed-ings when Sinclair hit true freshman D.J. Hayes deep down the field for the rookie’s first-career touchdown. RMU attempted a two-point con-version, but the pass was wide of its target. Senior Greg Langer then attempted a brilliant on-side kick that popped up in the air, giving the Colonials a chance to grab it. Junior Evan Taylor pounced on the loose ball as RMU was successful on its first such try of the season. However, RMU was unable to score again and would proceed to turn the ball over on downs.

Last RMU GameClimbing the Charts - Robert Morris senior quarterback Jeff Sinclair is climb-ing the RMU record book in multiple categories as he concludes his career in 2012. With his two touchdown passes Oct. 20, Sinclair moved into sole pos-session of second place in career touchdowns responsible for at Robert Morris and currently has 68. Tim Levcik (1998-2001) holds the all-time RMU record in that category with 81. Sinclair is also third in career total offense (6,021), fourth in career touchdown passes (52) and fifth in career comple-tions (401) and career passing yards (5,272) at RMU. His total offense per game average of 182.5 is second all-time at RMU, trailing only Levcik’s top mark of 191.4. Despite being a quarterback, Sinclair actually is fifth in career rushing touchdowns at Robert Morris (16) and moved into the top 10 in career rushing yards with his 84-yard performance against Lafayette.

Team Defense - The Robert Morris defense has had no trouble finding differ-ent players to step up as eight distinct Colonials have led (or tied for the lead) the squad in tackles in a single game through the first eight contests. Cameron Chadwick posted a game-high 12 tackles at defending national champion North Dakota State (9/1), Brad Banas and Mike Neilson each tallied 10 against defending NEC champion Albany (9/8), Mike Cook registered a game-high 11 stops @ Dayton (9/15), Marcelis Branch notched a team season-best 15 vs. Lafayette (9/29), Mark Centofanti topped the chart @ Saint Francis (10/6) with 10, D.J. Myers led the Colonials with eight hits @ Bryant (10/13) and Mike Cook and Nolan Nearhoof tied for the lead with 11 Oct. 20 vs. CCSU.

Langer's Leg - Greg Langer knocked through his first career game-winning field goal in the Sept. 29 win over Lafayette. He also converted a career-long 49-yard field goal vs. Albany Sept. 8. Langer has also made eight straight field goals from beyond 35 yards.

Foot Joy - One of the most important aspects that senior Jeff Sinclair brings to the quarterback position at Robert Morris is his versatility. In a 38-35 set-back @ Bryant Oct. 13, Sinclair rushed for a 2-yard touchdown on a naked bootleg in the third quarter that gave the Colonials a 21-16 lead. In 33 career games, Sinclair has already rushed for 16 touchdowns. To put that in perspec-tive, prior to Sinclair becoming the starter under center at RMU, quarter-backs combined for 16 rushing touchdowns in the first 156 games of the pro-gram’s history.

Right Side - In their fourth-quarter comeback effort last week @ Wagner, the Colonials recovered an on-side kick as Evan Taylor pounced on the loose ball. It marked the first on-side kick RMU recovered since Sept. 12, 2009.

Any Given Saturday - Entering Saturday’s contest against Wagner, there are two Colonials who would have pretty good odds of seeing the field, judging solely by their past histories. Redshirt seniors Sanchez Faugue and Sam Miller have each appeared in 41 games in their RMU careers, tops among active players. Faugue has the distinction of competing in each of the past 41 contests while Miller missed the 2010 season, but played in every game in 2008, 2009 and 2011. Senior Steve Mitchell is in hot pursuit of this duo as he has seen the field in 40 games in his career, including 32 straight contests.

Fresh Faces - As with any other year, the 2012 season has featured the first collegiate appearances for some newer Colonials. A total of 12 Colonials have made their first career starts thus far this season. Among the 12 are a pair of true freshmen who have combined for 13 starts thus far as Max Robertson has started at left guard and Marcelis Branch at cornerback. Robertson and Branch were the second offensive lineman and cornerback, respectively, to make their first-career start in 2012, joining sophomore center Nick Faraci and sophomore cornerback Zach Washington. In total, 17 Colonials have com-peted in a RMU uniform for the first time this season.

NEC Champions since 1996

Making the Grade - Nolan Nearhoof earned the highest academic honor in program history in late October as he was selected as a National Football Foundation (NFF) National Scholar-Athlete. Nearhoof was one of just 15 student-athletes from across all divisions of the NCAA to claim this honor and was the only student-athlete selected from 121 schools that play at the FCS level. As a result of earning this distinction, Nearhoof is awarded an $18,000 scholarship to assist with postgraduate studies. Nearhoof, who plans to attend physical therapy school, became the first student-ath-lete in the history of the program to receive this accolade. These 15 student-athletes, a list that includes USC All-American Matt Barkley and Notre Dame All-American line-backer Manti Te’o, also comprise the list of finalists for the 2012 William V. Campbell Trophy that recognizes an individual as the best scholar-athlete in the nation.

Making the Grade, II - Defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Second Team this past November, becoming only the second student-athlete in program history to earn two CoSIDA Academic All-American honors. Nearhoof had previously become the third player in program history to be named to the ESPN Academic All-America Team in 2010 when he earned second team accolades. Nearhoof owns a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.74 as a biology major and joined former Colonials Jonathan LeDonne (2001-04) and Ray Gensler (2003-06) to earn the honor. LeDonne, a linebacker, was named to the 2004 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team, while Gensler, a defensive lineman, was a two-time honoree, earning second team accolades in 2005 and first team honors in 2006. Nearhoof was also named as the NEC Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second-consecutive year. He was the fourth player in program history to claim that honor but the first to ever win it twice.

Mighty Marcelis - Marcelis Branch was named as the NEC’s Rookie of the Week Oct. 22. That award marked the third NEC weekly accolade that Branch garnered in the span of a month as he was selected as both the NEC Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week Oct. 1 after forcing two turnovers and contributing 15 tackles to help the Colonials to a win over previously undefeated Lafayette. This recent recognition made Branch the seventh Colonial in program history to earn multiple NEC Rookie of the Week honors. In addition, Branch became the first NEC student-athlete on the defen-sive side of the ball to earn multiple Rookie of the Week honors in the same season since 2008. Branch had a large impact against CCSU (10/20) as he posted six tackles, four solo, and forced a Blue Devil turnover by making a jumping interception. He also added three pass breakups, tied for the fourth most in RMU single-game history.

Regulation Only - Entering Saturday’s game against Duquesne, Robert Morris will have gone 66 consecutive games without having a contest go into overtime. That is the lon-gest such streak in program history since the NCAA instituted overtime in college football for the 1996 season. In fact, every other current member of the NEC has played at least one overtime game since RMU’s last such contest. The last time the Colonials headed to overtime was Oct. 14, 2006 when RMU upset No. 19 Central Connecticut State, 23-17 (2OT), in what was the program’s first-ever game against a nationally ranked opponent. After Jacky Candy (2006) intercepted a Blue Devil pass right near the goal line in the second extra session, Erik Cwalinski (2005-08) hooked up with Mario Hines (2004, 2006-07) for a game-winning 14-yard touchdown pass on 3rd-and-12. That contest against the Blue Devils remains the only home game in RMU history to go into overtime.

For Starters - When Robert Morris took the field Oct. 27 against Wagner, it sported its eighth starting lineup on offense in its eighth game. However, if 2011 was any indica-tion, RMU fans shouldn’t be surprised. Due to a number of injuries as well as changes with the depth chart, Robert Morris used nine different starting lineups on offense last season and has used 18 different starting combinations in its last 20 games. The start-ers actually stayed the same for three straight weeks in October 2011, but RMU had changes in its lineup from one week to the next throughout the early and late parts of the campaign. The Colonials were forced into starting three different quarterbacks and also had five different tailbacks/fullbacks start a game in 2011. The only returning Colonial on offense who started every game in 2011 is lineman A.J. Dalton.

Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., announced this past January that RMU Assistant Head Football Coach John Banaszak has been named the program's coach-in-waiting. Banaszak, who has spent the last nine years as an assistant coach and assistant head coachwith the Colonials, will take over for current head coach Joe Walton at the conclusion of the2013 season. "Coach Walton has done a tremendous job starting the program from scratch and developing it to its current level," Coleman said. "We are blessed to have another outstanding coach on our staff in Coach Banaszak to provide leadership and excellence when Walton retires." The 2011 season marked Banaszak's ninth season as a member of the Robert Morris footballcoach staff, including his fourth campaign as assistant head coach. Among his many duties with the program, Banaszak is responsible for tutoring the defensive line and the special teams unit. During Banaszak's time at Robert Morris, the Colonials have led the Northeast Conference intotal defense four times (2004, 2006, 2009 and 2010) and have finished in the top five in theleague on eight occasions. Banaszak was a key component to a 2010 defense that led the NEC in total defense, allowingan average of 312.6 yards per game, and coaching a defensive line that recorded 13 of RMU's21 sacks as the Colonials claimed the NEC's inaugural berth in the FCS Playoffs. In 2006, Banaszak helped tutor an RMU defense that led I-AA in total defense, allowing anaverage of just 228.36 yards per game. Under Banaszak's guidance, former defensive lineman Ray Gensler (2003-06) tied the RMUsingle-season school record for sacks with 11 in 2006 en route to earning All-NEC First Teamhonors. Gensler also established a career record in sacks with 19 thanks to 11 in 2006, andthe Robert Morris defensive line that season recorded 28 and-a-half of RMU's school record 34sacks. Eight of the 11 players in school history to earn All-NEC recognition on the defensive line have come under the tutelage of Banaszak, including Nolan Nearhoof, who led the Colonials with seven and-a-half sacks last year en route to being named to the 2011 All-NEC First Team. Prior to RMU, Banaszak served as the 30th head coach in Washington & Jefferson footballhistory, leading the Presidents to a record of 38-9 (.809) in his four seasons on the sidelinesbetween 1999 and 2002. In each of those four campaigns, he was named the Presidents' Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and ranks third on the college's all-time victory list. A 1975 graduate of Eastern Michigan with a bachelor's degree in health, physical educationand recreation, Banaszak signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers prior to the 1975season and was one of only three rookies to make the defending Super Bowl champion teamout of training camp. Primarily a special teams player on Pittsburgh's Super Bowl X championship team, Banaszakstarted five games the following season and then started at both right end and inside tackle in1977 before suffering a knee injury that forced him to the injured reserve list. Between 1978 and 1980, Banaszak started 45 regular-season games at defensive end as the Steelers won back-to-back Super Bowl championships. In Super Bowl XIII, Banaszak recorded six tackles, including a pair of sacks, and a fumble recovery in a 35-31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, which garnered him Defensive Player of the Game honors. The following year in Super Bowl XIV, Banaszak finished with five tackles and a sack in a 31-19 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

Robert Morris in the 2012 NEC StatsNo Tickets - When RMU takes to its home field in front of a sellout crowd, good things seem to happen. The latest example came in the team’s 31-28, last-second, Homecoming victory over Lafayette, a team which was previ-ously unbeaten and receiving votes in the national polls. That win moved RMU to 5-2 (.714) all-time when playing in front of a sold-out Joe Walton Stadium. RMU has won four consecutive home games that have been sellouts, a stretch which includes each of the last three Homecoming games. The first sellout at “The Joe” was also the first-ever game it hosted, Sept. 17, 2005.

Get To The Chopper - A quick glance at RMU’s record when broken down proves how important it is the Colonials get off to a good start in contests. When Robert Morris is leading at halftime, the program owns an all-time record of 86-12 (.878). When trailing at the break, Robert Morris owns a mark of 10-65-1 (.138). Even going into halftime tied is beneficial, as the Colonials own an overall record of 12-8 (.600) in such games.

The Magic Mark - Since the Colonials began play in 1994 there have been 73 games in which Robert Morris has scored 30 or more points. In those contests RMU boasts a record of 68-5 (.932), including a record of 40-5 (.889) in games in which the team scores between 30 and 39 points. In games in which the Colonials score 40 or more points, RMU is a perfect 28-0.

RMU Football Historical Tidbits - The inaugural running back at Robert Morris, the late Tim Hall (1994-95), rushed for 2,908 yards in his two seasons as a Colonial. Hall still owns the FCS season and career records for yards per carry, with his season record of 8.7 yards per carry set in 1994 and his two-year career record of 7.4 established in 1994 and 1995 ... Hall also ranks fourth all-time in the FCS in both rushing yards per game (153.1) and all-purpose yards per game (194.8) ... Former Colonial linebacker James Noel (2002-05) ranks fifth in the FCS record book for career tackles per game (10.7), while his career tackle total of 437 takedowns ranks 12th all-time ... Former linebacker and current assistant coach Alex DiMichele (2008-10) averaged 10 tackles per game over his three years in a Robert Morris uniform, which ranks 11th all-time in the FCS record book ... Robert Morris has led the nation in passing defense twice in the past 13 years. The Colonials topped the charts in both 1999, when they conceded just 80.80 yards per game through the air, and 2006, when they allowed only 88.70 yards per game via the pass.

Did You Know? - Robert Morris owns the all-time FCS record for the most consecutive quarters while holding an opponent scoreless. During the 1996 season, the Colonials went 15 straight quarters without allowing a single point. In fact, the record-setting streak occurred at the beginning of the sea-son. RMU posted three straight shutouts -- 20-0 against Mercyhurst (9/7), 38-0 against Butler (9/14) and 7-0 against Towson State (9/21) -- to open the campaign and then held Central Connecticut State (9/28) scoreless for the first three quarters before finally allowing a point for the first time all sea-son. In all, RMU went 234:04 before allowing a point in 1996. RMU went 9-2 (.818) in 1996, claiming a share of the NEC championship, and conceded just 12.9 points per game.
