For over 150 years, Gustavus Adolphus College has been educating tomorrow’s leaders to reason and act responsibly through its educational quality, accessible facilities, spiritual identity, and economic value.

Quality is a word that finds its way into many colleges’ vocabularies. At Gustavus, quality is evident in its students, faculty, facilities, and programs, leading to recognition by a host of impartial critics. Forbes.com ranked Gustavus among the top 100 institutions in the country in its college report based upon several factors, including the average amount of student debt and the four-year graduation rate. The College is also included in other national guides and rankings, for example the Fiske Guide, U.S. News & World Report’s Best College Guide, and the Princeton Review, which in addition has ranked the Gustavus Dining Service among the best in the nation in each of the past two years.

Gustavus students typically rank in the top third of their high school graduating class, and over 37 percent rank in the upper 10 percent of their class. Continuing their achievement at Gustavus, students find a challenging academic atmosphere where professors—98 percent of tenured faculty members have earned the highest degree in

their field—teach all classes (there are no graduate assistants) and serve as academic advisers. Collaborative learning is the norm, with exceptionally motivated students invited to conduct research independently or with a professor.

Top quality facilities complement educational quality. The National Review College Guide declares the two Gustavus science facilities to be “the envy of other small schools in its class,” while Schaefer Fine Arts Center houses the Anderson Theatre, acoustically perfect Björling Recital Hall, Kresge Dance Studio, a MIDI computerized composition lab, and plenty of practice rooms. The Bernadotte Library provides ample study space and access to literally millions of volumes through its holdings, the MnPALS system, and LEXIS-NEXIS. Computer facilities are vital no matter what a student’s major, and Gustavus provides direct network access from more than 400 public-access terminals, with all individual student residential rooms hardwired for full Ethernet connectivity.

Founded by Swedish Lutheran immigrants, Gustavus has maintained its sense of spiritual identity through a daily service held in Christ Chapel (which many students choose to attend) and a one-course religion component built into the liberal arts core academic requirements. A Gustavus education challenges students to examine, develop, and strengthen their own spiritual and moral values, which for many students translates directly into service to others.

A number of factors combine to make Gustavus an outstanding economic value. Most importantly, Gustavus students graduate on time, with a four-year graduation rate of more than four times the national average. Moreover, Gustavus offers comprehensive financial assistance programs, including merit-based and need-based grants and scholarships.

KING GUSTAV II ADOLF: THE NAMESAKE OF GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE

Founded in 1862 by Swedish immigrants, Gustavus Adolphus College bears the name of the famous Swedish king Gustav II Adolf (1594–1632). Known as the “Warrior King,” Gustav ascended the throne at the tender age of seventeen and reigned from 1611 to 1632. In that short time span, he became more popular and powerful than any Swedish monarch before him. King Gustav was known as a friend of the people and a strong proponent of education. He died in battle at Lutzen, Germany, as he led his troops in the Thirty Years War, fighting for his faith and securing the future of Protestantism.

Peter Haugen, a native of Minneapolis and a 1991 graduate of Bethel University, is in his seventh year as head football coach at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Last season, the Gustavus football team posted a 5-5 overall record with a MIAC mark of 3-5. The Golden Gusties started the season winning their first three games and averaged 36 points per game during the first four games. Twice the Gustie defense disallowed their opponent’s offense to exceed double-digit points, defeating Westminster College 35-6 and St. Olaf College 23-3.

In the MIAC’s 2016 post-season honors, first team all-conference recipients included offensive lineman Joe Theiler (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) and linebacker Casey Decker (Jr., Mapleton, Minn.). Second team members included running back Luke Martinez (Sr., Lenexa, Kan.), wide receiver Hunter Johnson (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.), offensive lineman Ryan Landherr (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.), defensive lineman Chris Nelson (Jr., New London, Minn.), inside linebacker Jordan Kahlow (So., Le Sueur, Minn.), and kicker Brendan Boche (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.). In addition, linebackers Matt Berkner (So., Sleepy Eye, Minn.) and Leeland Lauti (Jr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii), running back Karim Ortiz (Jr., Cancu, Mexico), and defensive lineman Iker Ortiz-Hidalgo (Sr., Cancun, Mexico) earned honorable mention honors.

In eight seasons at the head of the Gustavus Adolphus football program, Haugen has compiled an overall record of 37-43 and a MIAC record of 26-38.

Haugen, who was the head football coach at Washburn High School for 15 years prior to coming to Gustavus, compiled an overall record of 111-44 during that span, while winning 11 league championships and posting a league record of 76–8. He directed the Millers to the Class AAAA quarterfinals in 2007 finishing with a mark of 9–3. In his last season as the Millers’ head coach, Haugen’s squad posted a mark of 8–2. While building the program at Washburn, Haugen increased player

participation from 35 players in 1994 to 110 players in 2008. He also implemented academic monitoring and meal programs for student-athletes as well as creating and directing the highly successful Washburn Athletic Leadership Academy. He has also served as the chair of the Minneapolis Football Conference and he is an active clinician working at many local and regional clinics including the NIKE Coach of the Year clinic. Haugen was also a member of the Metro coaching staff for the Minnesota All-Star game in 1998. He started his coaching career at his alma mater, serving as the offensive line coach during the 1992 and 1993 seasons.

A three-sport standout at Bethel, Haugen was a starting tight end on the football team, a starting goaltender on the hockey team, and a starting catcher on the baseball team in the late ’80s and early ’90s. In his senior year, he earned all-conference honors in football, and was selected Most Valuable Player of the hockey team.

Haugen became the 17th head coach in the 98-year history of Gustavus football. The Golden Gusties have a long and storied football tradition that includes 22 MIAC titles. The program ranks in the top-50 all-time in Division III (out of 235 institutions) with a 58.0 winning percentage (479–343–21). The Gusties will soon join an elite group of 40 NCAA Division III institutions whose football teams have won 500 games.

Along with great teams, Gustavus has also been blessed with many outstanding individual players, which includes 30 players who have received All-America honors, 13 who have received CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, and five who have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Most recently, wide receiver Matt Boyce ’16 was named to the D3football.com All-America Team.

Peter, and his wife, Brenda live in St. Peter with their three children, Zeke, Zoe, and Zetta.

Haugen’s guiding principles for the Gustavus Football Program are:

Vision: To be a team of trusted Leaders, Scholars, and Servants who live a life of purpose and share a passion to be

champions.

Program Outcomes: Relationships Forged, Growth Challenged, Paths Defined

2017 SEASON PREVIEWThe Gustavus football team enters 2017 with revived goals and expectations. The Gusties are looking to improve upon its 5-5 overall record and 3-5 MIAC mark from last season after three consecutive winning seasons previously.

A large bulk of returning letterwinners are expected to lead the way. Gustavus returns 34 letterwinners, including nine starters on defense and five on offense.

Offensive LineKey losses: Joe Theiler (Maple Grove, Minn), Ryan Landherr (Prior Lake, Minn.) and Jake Schmitz (North Branch, Minn.)Players to watch: Jake Langevin (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn), Ethan Stordahl (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Tommy Jech (So., Chatfield, Minn.)Notes:• Theiler was named to the 2016 MIAC All-Conference First Team and Landherr to the Second Team• Langevin, Stordahl, and Jech combined for 13 starts on the offensive line last seasonCoach’s Peter Haugen’s comment: “We lost some key guys but I think every year it is fun to see who is going to step up. We certainly have some guys coming back with some experience along with a couple new faces in there. This group has worked incredibly hard and I think they understand the expectations of where we need to be.”

Running BacksKey loss: Luke Martinez (Lenexa, Kan.)Players to watch: Karim Ortiz (Sr., Cancun, Mexico) and Jamison Beulke (Jr., Montgomery, Minn.)Notes:• Martinez averaged 64.8 yards per game and was an All-Conference Second Team member.• Ortiz returns as the leading rusher from last season as he played in all 10 games and accumulated 567 yards and six touchdowns. He also was an All-Conference Honorable Mention honoree.• Beulke will receive snaps at both the running back and wide receiver position this season. He had 14 carries for 57 yards last season.Coach’s comment: “Between Ortiz and Beulke, those guys will be getting the main share of the load and they compliment each other really well. Both are coming back with a lot of playing experience. Karim is more of a traditional running and Jamison can kind of do it all; either running the ball in the backfield or lining up in the slot. We think we’re going to have a chance to be pretty dynamic at the running back position.”

Johnson has had a lot of experience along with Hirman. Others guys like Beulke, Josh Kirk (So., Garvin, Minn.), and Brice Panning (So., Hamburg, Minn.) will also add depth. Finch returns at tight end after getting some good playing time last year and will be the starter.”

There is a good opportunity to form a new identity and they have had a strong fall camp.”

Defensive BacksKey losses: Tanner Jensen (Lewiston, Minn.)Players to watch: Dutch Claybaugh (Jr., Kaneohe, Hawaii), Jordan Kahlow (Jr., Le Sueur, Minn.), Nathan Hajder (Sr., Rogers, Minn.) and Drew Fredericksen (Sr., Forsyth, Ill.)Notes:• The Gustie defense more than doubled its interception total from the previous season, totaling 17 in 2016• Kahlow tied for second on the team with 50 tackles while Claybaugh tied for the team lead with seven pass breakupsCoach’s comment: “The defensive back group is exciting as we bring back some solid experience. That battery has been incredibly consistent. We have some good experience coming back.”
