FOOTBALL
2016 MEDIA GUIDE
For over 150 years, Gustavus Adolphus College has been educating tomorrow’s leaders to reason and act responsibly through its educational quality, accessible facilities, spiritual identity, and economic value.
Quality is a word that finds its way into many colleges’ vocabularies. At Gustavus, quality is evident in its students, faculty, facilities, and programs, leading to recognition by a host of impartial critics. Forbes.com ranked Gustavus among the top 100 institutions in the country in its college report based upon several factors, including the average amount of student debt and the four-year graduation rate. The College is also included in other national guides and rankings, for example the Fiske Guide, U.S. News & World Report’s Best College Guide, and the Princeton Review, which in addition has ranked the Gustavus Dining Service among the best in the nation in each of the past two years.
Gustavus students typically rank in the top third of their high school graduating class, and over 37 percent rank in the upper 10 percent of their class. Continuing their achievement at Gustavus, students find a challenging academic atmosphere where professors—98 percent of tenured faculty members have earned the highest degree in
their field—teach all classes (there are no graduate assistants) and serve as academic advisers. Collaborative learning is the norm, with exceptionally motivated students invited to conduct research independently or with a professor.
Top quality facilities complement educational quality. The National Review College Guide declares the two Gustavus science facilities to be “the envy of other small schools in its class,” while Schaefer Fine Arts Center houses the Anderson Theatre, acoustically perfect Björling Recital Hall, Kresge Dance Studio, a MIDI computerized composition lab, and plenty of practice rooms. The Bernadotte Library provides ample study space and access to literally millions of volumes through its holdings, the MnPALS system, and LEXIS-NEXIS. Computer facilities are vital no matter what a student’s major, and Gustavus provides direct network access from more than 400 public-access terminals, with all individual student residential rooms hardwired for full Ethernet connectivity.
Founded by Swedish Lutheran immigrants, Gustavus has maintained its sense of spiritual identity through a daily service held in Christ Chapel (which many students choose to attend) and a one-course religion component built into the liberal arts core academic requirements. A Gustavus education challenges students to examine, develop, and strengthen their own spiritual and moral values, which for many students translates directly into service to others.
A number of factors combine to make Gustavus an outstanding economic value. Most importantly, Gustavus students graduate on time, with a four-year graduation rate of more than four times the national average. Moreover, Gustavus offers comprehensive financial assistance programs, including merit-based and need-based grants and scholarships.
KING GUSTAV II ADOLF: THE NAMESAKE OF GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE
Founded in 1862 by Swedish immigrants, Gustavus Adolphus College bears the name of the famous Swedish king Gustav II Adolf (1594–1632). Known as the “Warrior King,” Gustav ascended the throne at the tender age of seventeen and reigned from 1611 to 1632. In that short time span, he became more popular and powerful than any Swedish monarch before him. King Gustav was known as a friend of the people and a strong proponent of education. He died in battle at Lutzen, Germany, as he led his troops in the Thirty Years War, fighting for his faith and securing the future of Protestantism.

Peter Haugen, a native of Minneapolis and a 1991 graduate of Bethel University, is in his seventh year as head football coach at Gustavus Adolphus College.
Last season, the Gustavus football team matched its 2013 campaign with an overall record of 6-4 and a MIAC mark of 4-4. The Golden Gusties started the season on a tear, winning their first six games, which was the best start to a season since the 1987 team went 10-0 and claimed the MIAC title. Last season’s hot start was highlighted by conference wins over Hamline, Augsburg, Carleton
and St. Olaf. Offense was the name of the game as the Gusties averaged 47.5 points per game during that four-game stretch. Of the four losses, three were by 10 points or less.
In the MIAC’s post-season honors, first team all-conference recipients included senior kicker Thomas Scheusener (Rapid City, S.D.), junior quarterback Mitch Hendricks (Bemidji, Minn.), junior wide receiver Matt Boyce (Excelsior, Minn.), junior wide receiver Gabriel Boyce (Excelsior, Minn.) and junior offensive lineman Marcus Kelly (Woodbury, Minn.). Matt Boyce, Gabriel Boyce and Mitch Hendricks were later named to the D3football.com All-West Region Team, while Matt Boyce was selected to the D3football.com All-America Team.
In six seasons at the head of the Gustavus Adolphus football program, Haugen has compiled an overall record of 25-35 and a MIAC record of 18-30.
Haugen, who was the head football coach at Washburn High School for 15 years prior to coming to Gustavus, compiled an overall record of 111-44 during that span, while winning 11 league championships and posting a league record of 76–8. He directed the Millers to the Class AAAA quarterfinals in 2007 finishing with a mark of 9–3. In his last season as the Millers’ head coach, Haugen’s squad posted a mark of 8–2. While building the program at Washburn, Haugen increased player participation from 35 players in 1994 to 110 players in 2008. He
also implemented academic monitoring and meal programs for student-athletes as well as creating and directing the highly successful Washburn Athletic Leadership Academy. He has also served as the chair of the Minneapolis Football Conference and he is an active clinician working at many local and regional clinics including the NIKE Coach of the Year clinic. Haugen was also a member of the Metro coaching staff for the Minnesota All-Star game in 1998. He started his coaching career at his alma mater, serving as the offensive line coach during the 1992 and 1993 seasons.
A three-sport standout at Bethel, Haugen was a starting tight end on the football team, a starting goaltender on the hockey team, and a starting catcher on the baseball team in the late ’80s and early ’90s. In his senior year, he earned all-conference honors in football, and was selected Most Valuable Player of the hockey team.
Haugen became the 17th head coach in the 98-year history of Gustavus football. The Golden Gusties have a long and storied football tradition that includes 22 MIAC titles. The program ranks in the top-50 all-time in Division III (out of 235 institutions) with a 58.0 winning percentage (479–343–21). The Gusties will soon join an elite group of 40 NCAA Division III institutions whose football teams have won 500 games.
Along with great teams, Gustavus has also been blessed with many outstanding individual players, which includes 30 players who have received All-America honors, 13 who have received CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, and five who have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Most recently, wide receiver Matt Boyce ’16 was named to the D3football.com All-America Team.
Peter, and his wife, Brenda live in St. Peter with their three children, Zeke, Zoe, and Zetta.
Haugen’s guiding principles for the Gustavus Football Program are:
Vision: To be a team of trusted Leaders, Scholars, and Servants who live a life of purpose and share a passion to be
champions.
Program Outcomes: Relationships Forged, Growth Challenged, Paths Defined

2016 SEASON PREVIEWThe 2015 Gustavus football season was special in many ways – individual career records were set and the team finished 7-3 overall and 5-3 in the MIAC for third place. The seven wins were the most by the Gusties since 2001 and the third place finish in the league was best since 2002. But now the page turns to the 2016 campaign, which marks a monumental milestone in the program’s history as Gustavus celebrates its 100th season of football. This season’s offense will create a new identity with the loss of record-setting quarterback Mitch Hendricks and All-American receiver Matthew Boyce, while the defense is restructured to cater to its strengths. After three consecutive winnings seasons, expectations are high for the Gusties in 2016.Offensive LineKey losses: Marcus Kelly (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and Scott Newby (Lakeville, Minn.)Players to watch: Joe Theiler (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn), Ryan Landherr (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) and Jake Schmitz (Jr., North Branch, Minn.)Notes: • Theiler was named to the 2015 MIAC All-Conference Second Team • Offensive line last season blocked for a MIAC-leading 319.2 passing yards per game and a 58% third down conversion rate• Jeremy Pastir (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) and Jake Langevin (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) will round out the offensive line as new startersCoach’s comment: “We’re bringing back three guys that did a really nice job for us last year. Landherr, Theiler, and Schmitz - those guys return and bring experience, and then there will be a couple new guys. We lose a couple great guys for sure, but we’re excited about this year’s group.” Running BacksKey loss: nonePlayers to watch: Luke Martinez (Sr. Lenexa, Kan.), and Karim Ortiz (Jr., Cancun, Mexico)Notes:• Martinez returns to the starting lineup after missing all of last season due to injury• Ortiz started last season as the No. 4 running back and finished the season as the team’s leading rusher with 99 carries for 452 yards and five touchdowns. Coach’s comment: “Having depth last year was one of the areas where we could see what we had and how important that depth was. We got to our fourth running back in week four, and Karim had a great season. We’re excited that Luke is back and he is going to lead a talented group.”QuarterbackKey loss: Mitch Hendricks (Bemidji, Minn.)One to watch: Michael Veldman (So., Becker, Minn.) and Sam Archer (So., Zimmerman, Minn.)Notes: • Hendricks finished as Gustavus’s career record holder in completions (699) and touchdowns (77), and was 87 yards shy of the program’s record for passing yards• Veldman begins the season as the starter after transferring from North Dakota State University• Last season, Gustavus led the MIAC with 319.2 passing yards per gameCoach’s comment: “Replacing Mitch is obviously going to be tough. He did such a great job and was a tremendous competitor. But moving forward, Veldman will go in week one and Archer will be the backup. We feel like we have four guys who are going to be able to compete in this league. We have more quality depth at quarterback than we’ve ever had with Veldman, Archer, Brandon Snoberger (So., Rice, Minn.) and Christian Haffner (Fy., Lebanon, Tenn.).” Wide Receivers/Tight EndsKey loss: Matthew Boyce (Excelsior, Minn.), Gabriel Boyce (Excelsior, Minn.), and Jake Douglas (Montevideo, Minn.)Players to watch: George Buchner (Sr., Excelsior, Minn.),

2016 SEASON PREVIEWHunter Johnson (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) and Michael Hensch (So., North Branch, Minn.) Notes:• Gustavus receivers led the MIAC last season with 33 touchdowns during the regular season (two from running backs)• Matthew Boyce set the program record for most receiving yards in a season last year with 1,318 yards on 77 receptions• Johnson is the team’s leading returner, having caught 24 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns last season• Hensch steps into the starting tight end role after not catching a pass last seasonCoach’s comment: “We certainly lost some big players from last year, but we bring back Buchner who’s seeing a lot of time and Johnson who’s also seeing a lot of time, along with Drew Fredericksen (Jr., Forsyth, Ill.) and Jamison Beulke (So., Montgomery, Minn.), who had some quality minutes last year. It’s really a talented group of receivers and with our depth that should be a strong point with our young kids.” Defensive LineKey losses: Adam Neubarth (Cologne, Minn.) and Isaac Kotila (Buffalo, Minn.)Players to watch: Aaron Brau (Sr., Wabasso, Minn.) and Levi Folkert (Sr., Elgin, Minn.)Notes:• Folkert returns as the defensive line’s most experienced player, having played in all 10 games last season with 14 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss. • The Gusties will try to decrease their time on defense this season after leading the league with 85.8 tackles per game last year• Last season the Gusties recorded 55 tackles for loss, accounting for 317 yards Coach’s comment: “We’re trying to utilize the talent that we have at d-line. I’m excited about this group and how they are coming along. Coach Vine is working with them this year and that will be fun. We’re excited about the group coming back. Brau will anchor that group along with Folkert” LinebackersKey losses: Kyle Krzmarzick (Sleepy Eye, Minn.) and Kysten Zierke (Blue Earth, Minn.)Players to watch: Zack Martinez (Sr., Lenexa, Kan.), Tyler Jakes (Sr., North Mankato, Minn.), Casey Decker (Jr., Mapleton, Minn.), and Anders Raarup (Jr., Eagan, Minn.)Notes:• Martinez returns to the starting middle linebacker spot after missing all last season with an injury• Krzmarzick and Zierke led the team in tackles last season with 71 and 70, respectively, while Raarup and Jakes were next in line with 49 and 48, repectivelyCoach’s comment: “There’s no doubt we’ll have some strong quality at linebacker. Martinez come back along with Jakes. Both guys are captains in the middle there. The guys who are on the edge are Decker and Raarup, who played a ton last year, so there’s a lot of experience at linebacker.” Defensive BacksKey losses: Nick Frandsen (North Oaks, Minn.) and Phillip Sun (Doral, Fla.)Players to watch: Dutch Claybaugh (So., Kaneohe, Hawaii) and Tanner Jensen (Sr., Lewiston, Minn.) Notes:• The Gustie defense posted six interceptions last year, but none were recorded by this season’s returning defensive backs• Jensen is the most experienced returner, having played in all 10 games last sesaon with 29 tackles, three pass breakups and three passes defendedCoach’s comment: “Jordan Sorensen (Sr., St. Peter, Minn.) and Tanner Jensen played quite a bit last year, as well as Claybaugh
and Sergio De Pablos (Sr., Cancun, Mexico), who didn’t play at the beginning of the year, but then we moved him to defense. There are a few guys that saw a number of varsity snaps last year, but we’ll be young with our depth.”SpecialistsKey loss: nonePlayers to watch: Brendan Boche (Kicker, So., Lakeville, Minn.) and Casey DeckerNotes:• Boche set a number of program kicking records last season - most extra points made in a game (9), most extra points made in a season (55), most extra points attempted in a season (58), most consecutive extra points made (49), and highest extra point percentage in a career (94.8%)• Decker returns as the punter after recording 24 punts for an avergae of 34.6 yardsCoach’s comments: “Our specialists are a solid group. I’m excited about both Boche and Decker at kicker and punter. They both had great seasons last year and then Brayton Finch (Fy., Mount Morris, Ill.) will back up both those positions.”
