8 Foothills Marketplace 888-7653 February 15,
Gene and Betty Ernst ventured outinto the world of owning their ownbusiness selling gift items at Denio’s
Farmers Market and Swap Meet inRoseville, California. As the businessgrew the married couple decided they
wanted to have a location closer totheir Chicago Park home so in 1983they opened Foothill Trading Company in Grass Valley’s K-Mart Shopping Center. The store not only featuredpopular gift itemsfrom their days of selling at Denio’s butalso a small amountof headboards andfootboards. After afew years the couplenoticed the populari-ty of their bedding line. In 1993 they decided it was time tofind a larger store
location which would allow for expansion of theirbedding merchandise. This led them to their cur-rent location on Freeman Lane in the Raley’sShopping Center. Eventually the business becamefocused on selling bedding items and less on giftitems. The change in business focus also caused thebusiness to take on a new name...Foothill Mattress
Center.Today the gift items are gone. They have bee
replaced by the largest in store selection of mattes in Northern California. Sixty-two floor modeall. The store floor space is filled with top sellinbrand names such as Tempur-pedic, Simmon’sBeautyrest, Sealy Posturepedic and Englander L
Walls of Foothill Mattress Center display a largevaried selection of head and footboards. One ostore’s more unique and popular items is the spsaving Wall Bed that transforms from a beautifu
piece of furniture into a queen size bed in just sonds. In addition to bedding items, shoppers calso find bedroom furnishings as well as sofas, loveseats and recliners.
Gene Ernst passed away four years ago, but Band son David continue to run the business in afamily way. “Our business is not what we do, it’part of who we are” according to Betty. “Customservice and great prices has always been the corstones of our business”. Foothill Mattress Centebacks up custom satisfaction with a 30 day “Com
Exchange” on mattresses sold along with free deery. “We’ve free delivered as far away as San Josand Tahoe” said Betty.
Foothill Mattress Company is open seven day week, Monday through Saturday 10:00am to 5:3and Sunday noon to 4:00pm. You can also learnmore about their business and merchandise by ing their web site at www.foothill-mattress.com

President’s Day
Monday February 21st isPresidents’ Day, a day off for many as it is a federal holiday. But why
do we celebrate our leaders inFebruary? Is it because our firstPresident, George Washington wasborn on February 22nd? Add tothat, one of the countries favoriteformer presidents, AbrahamLincoln, was born on February 12th. Of the 44 men who have heldthe office of the Presidency only two others were born in February,
William Henry Harrison (Feb. 9th)and California’s own Ronald Reagan

Presidents’ Day kind of started in
1880 when Washington’s Birthday was declared a federal holiday only in Washington, DC. It was the firstfederal holiday to honor an

Presidents’ Day. On January 11971, the federal holiday was sed to the third Monday in Febrby the Uniform Monday Holid
Act with the purpose of not tohonor any particular Presidentto honor the office of thePresidency. The name PresideDay, while still not an act of Congress, became popular in tmid-1980’s when advertisers stusing the term. It was especia
popular with furniture stores aauto dealerships. And the namstuck. Today the name PresideDay has been accepted by mosizens, states and makers of caldars.
