The pair of painters opened the approximately 1,000 square foot gallery last month and have been slowly refining things ever since, with one room still yet to be designed.
“Right away we decided we’d take some pressure off ourselves by displaying a number of different artists,” Elliott said. “I’m fairly prolific when I have the time. Getting things started has taken up a lot of that time so we thought we’d bring in a variety of artists.”
One of the featured artists in the gallery is Rich Kenney.
“He paints these fantastic whimsical landscapes in bright colors of actual places,” Elliott said.
The couple, who met in Seattle during a time when Elliott was an interior decorator and Simon was a furniture maker, said they’ve found inspiration for their art in the travels they’ve done over the years.
“We’ve really travelled the world and painted along the way,” said Simon, who identified the South of France as their
favorite area. “It refreshes and inspires you.”
Elliott, who has been painting for 40 years, has made her travels part of her art work after initially focusing her efforts painting water colors.
“Whenever I travel, I collect tickets, stamps, labels, or a scrap of a poster adhered to a wall,” she said. “Each snippet stimulates my creativity and often become the basis for a new painting.”
Semi-retired, Elliott said the beauty of the gallery is that she and Simon can do what they want.
“I like the more colorful
pieces,” she said. “You want
to do something unique, just
not so unique that there isn’t a
market for it.”

Few things are more closely identified with the 100 years of Arizona statehood than the cowboys of the Old West. That portion of Arizona history will come alive at this year’s Winter Range running through Sunday at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix.
Winter Range provides the backdrop for the Single Action Shooting Society’s National Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting. Over the past 20 years, the event has grown to be the world’s largest “Western Encampment,” drawing thousands of spectators and Old West enthusiasts. About 1,000 competitors representing 42 different states and five foreign countries will compete in nearly two dozen categories. The competitors, male and female, range in age from 12 to more than 80 years old.
This year’s Winter Range has been designated as an Official Centennial Event.
Cowboy Action Shooting™ requires that contestants compete with firearms typical of those used in the days of the Old West: single-action revolvers, lever-action rifles, and period shotguns. Participants must also adopt a shooting alias appropriate to a character or profession of the late 19th century, a Hollywood western star, or an appropriate character from fiction, and then costume themselves accordingly.
During timed events, shooters test their skills against steel targets set up within a course of 12 different stages, each featuring different scenarios and scenic elements, which this year will be based on events from Arizona’s colorful history.
In addition, this year will feature mounted shooters (Friday - Sunday only) testing their skills in their own arena.
In addition to the competitive events, Winter Range 2012 will feature displays of period militaria, exhibitions of western skills and crafts, a fast draw competition, and nearly 100 vendors offering everything from period clothing to antiques and reproductions.
Entertainment will include singers, cowboy bands, trick roping, trick horses, and various other forms of cowboy entertainment. A variety of food services will also be available, from authentic chuck wagon cooking to hot dogs.
Daily event times for this year’s Winter Range are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. today through Saturday, with the final awards ceremony taking place on Sunday. Admission is free, but there is a $5 per vehicle parking fee which is used to support the Youth Assistance Foundation of the Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Posse and the Rotary Club.
While in the shooting areas, spectators will be required to wear eye protection; sunglasses and corrective glasses are acceptable. Ear protection is suggested, especially for children.
Ben Avery Shooting Facility is located just west of the junction of I-17 and Carefree Highway (exit 223). Winter Range will occupy the western portion of the shooting facility grounds and can be easily located by the huge white tent that serves as the hub of this event.

FUNDRAISER/BENEFITCave Creek bull riding event supports Team W.I.S.H.
The Buffalo Chip Saloon and Steakhouse will host the third annual Bulls 4 Boobs fundraiser Fridays beginning Feb. 24 through the finale on March 30 in Cave Creek.
Team W.I.S.H. has set a goal of raising $20,000 toward helping fund breast cancer research, provide educational information and fund programs needed to defeat the disease.
Team member swill stand between the live bull ride and the product table selling pink ribbon items, collecting donations and will conduct a silent auction each Friday night. Autographed Arizona Cardinal pink baseball caps by coach Ken Whisenhunt, defensive coordinator Ray Horton and Hall of Famer Russ Grimm a pair of Simpson NASCAR gloves signed by Jeff Burton are among some of the items that will be auctioned off.
This year there will also be a chance for youth to get into the action as the night of bull riding will be broken up by ‘mutton bustin’ as youngsters get the chance to chase down a sheep to capture a prize.

Musical Theater of Anthem performs benefit show
Musical Theatre of Anthem presents One Night on Broadway…and more!, a benefit dinner cabaret at 6:30 p.m., March 10 at 40216 N. Noblehawk Ct. in Anthem.

Anthem Girl Scout Troop 2540 donated 840 pounds of food to the Foothills Food Bank earlier this month.
The group, comprised of nine fifth graders from Anthem, Anthem Prep and Esperanza schools, used a variety of fundraisers to contribute to the project.
Among those efforts was a second annual Father-Daughter dance on Jan. 27 at St. Rose Church in Anthem that drew more than 400 people. Attendees paid $5 admission and were asked to contribute two cans of food.
The troop adopted a family at Christmas, conducting cookie sales and garage sales to buy

Golf tournament aids emergency responders
The inaugural Anthem Area Emergency Responders Charity Golf Tournament will take place at noon, on March 5 at Anthem Golf and Country Club.
Registration for the event is at noon, with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The tournament on the Ironwood Golf Course will be a four person scramble. A barbeque will follow the event.
Cost for the tournament is $150 and includes golf and dinner. There’s a discount rate of $500 for foursomes. Those that are interested in golf can take part in the barbeque with adults costing $35 and children 6-12 cost $15. Children 5 and under are free.

Hearts and Hands Gala supports Foothills Community Foundation
Hearts and Hands Gala, a fundraiser for the Foothills Community Foundation is set for 5 p.m., April 1at the Holland Community Center.
The event, which runs until 9 p.m., includes a reception, formal dinner, live auction, raffles and entertainment. Among the items up for bids will be trips, jewelry, Ferrari car experiences, a VIP car museum tour, exclusive golf packages and other items.
The event is a fundraiser for the Foothills Community Foundation (FCF), which serves residents in the communities of North Scottsdale, Carefree, Cave Creek and North Phoenix.
FCF-Caring Communities provides programs to support families at risk and coordinates social services with local churches and instituted Second Step a bullying prevention program which reaches 3,000
students in Cave Creek Unified School District schools. FCF and the Foothills Food Bank provided 250 families with assistance this past season through the annual Holiday Project. The FCF-Holland Community center provides multi-age dining and meeting facilities for bridge clubs, community sings, weekly bingo, K-Club, computer classes, education lectures from Scottsdale Healthcare as well as a place for other non-profits to hold events. The Hearts and Hands benefit will enable FCF to continue to support these programs and to serve as a connecting point for the Desert Foothills.

Boulder Creek cheer raises funds for national competition
The Boulder Creek Jaguars cheer squad, in efforts to attend Nationals in California at the end of March is hosting an event March 9 during which they will be raffling off various donated items.
The funds raised through ticket sales and proceeds from the raffle will go to reducing the required fee each member of the team is responsible for. Raffle items are being sought for baskets with themes such as BCHS Spirit, beach/California, spa, game night, movie night, golf and wine.
Other tax deductible donations also are welcome from tickets to sporting events, concerts, trips, restaurant gift certificates etc.

PERFORMANCESOn The Towne performs Magic Machine
On The Towne Theatre in Anthem will perform Magic Machine, about a character named Calvin, a slight youngster who can’t compete with the more athletically-inclined kids in the neighborhood.
The show takes place at 7 p.m., Friday and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday at Cross of Christ Church in Anthem.
Through its erratic powers Calvin, his best friend Jenny, and a lost dragon drop into odd versions of three fairy tales. In “The Three Bears” Calvin stops the bears from eating them for dinner and teaches the bears how to be happy. In “Rumpelstiltskin” Calvin helps the miller’s daughter by shouting the evil little man’s name, and in the third story, “Alice in Wonderland,” Calvin stops the court from capturing the three of them by the smart use of his yo-yo. Finally the dragon gets to return to Camelot and Calvin and Jenny find themselves back on the street where they first found the Magic Machine.

Arizona Musicfest 2012 has added a 7:30 p.m., March 3 show “From A to Z – ABBA to Les MiZ- Broadway’s Best!” at North Scottsdale Christian.

A new photo contest is being held featuring the Carefree Desert Garden, donated by Desert Foothills Landscape. The 4 acre Garden, in the Carefree park on Easy Street, contains many spectacular and rare plants. All photos must include the Garden but may include other features in the surrounding environment.
Entries will be accepted through March 18. The Town of Carefree will have first rights to use the photos that are entered. Photos may be used for calendars and other merchandise, and
for Carefree marketing. The photographer will be credited.

What do Alice Cooper, Jordan Sparks and Waylon Jennings have in common?
They’re all part of Arizona’s musical history and are all featured in the latest display at the Musical Instrument Museum.
The display called, “I am AZ Music”, which opened Saturday and runs through Jan. 6, 2013 is the museum’s tribute to the state’s recently celebrated centennial.
The new exhibit not only covers musicians from a host of genres, who have ties to the state, but looks at the musical instrument makers, recording studios, performing arts organizations and musical traditions significant to Arizona’s past, present and future.
Scott Johnson, the guitarist for the Gin Blossoms, was at the museum on Thursday to check out the display, which includes
a guitar used by the group’s original songwriter Doug Hopkins, on some of the band’s biggest hits as well as some of the photos of the band.
“This is really cool,” Johnson said. “I had no idea we’d be on display next to Alice Cooper.”
Johnson said the Gin Blossoms were a long-time bar band, starting in 1987, before “Hey Jealousy” released in 1992 brought them wide-spread acclaim.
“We definitely weren’t the overnight sensation story,” he said. “We watched the guys from Hootie and the Blowfish blow up and kept wondering if it was ever going to happen for us.”
Johnson said it was actually a show in Salt Lake City in 1993 where he got an idea that the Gin Blossoms had gone to another level.
“We showed up for this performance at Club DV8 and there was a line out the door,” he said. “From there on we started to see it grow.”
Johnson has his theories as to why the Gin Blossoms were able to gain a mainstream following.
“I think it was the songs attention to detail,” he said.
Johnson, whose Gin Blossoms cut their teeth early on by performing at the since defunct Long Wong’s, said he was blown away that the MIM would choose to feature his group.
“There are a lot of good local groups they could have gone with,” he said. “The Meat Puppets come to mind.”
Beyond the rock and roll representatives, including Alice Cooper and Stevie Nicks, the new display delves into country by featuring Waylon Jennings who used to play at a place called JD’s, located south of McDowell on Scottsdale Road, and jazz musicians Russell Moore and Charles Mingus.
Native American music also plays prominently in Arizona’s culture. That culture has been brought to the masses through Canyon Records, another
feature in the display.The Robert-Venn School of
Luthiery, noted for producing some of the country’s top guitar makers, also is featured.
“We’re one of the longest running schools is the country,” said company representative Bart Appelwhite said. “This is the place 99 percent of the people that go into the industry get their start. It’s a proving ground to hone your skills.”
Along with instruments on displays and pictures of artists attendees to the museum receive a head set with a transmitter. As visitors walk from exhibit to exhibit they’re able to hear music from each artist.

offered a job as an instructor and may have avoided combat altogether if he had elected to take the job teaching others.
“Well, hindsight being what it is I may have reconsidered,” he said with a laugh. “I guess I didn’t know what I was getting myself into.”
Part of what Tom Brokaw deemed “The Greatest Generation” in his 1998 book, Jones said the number of soldiers that had grown up during the Great Depression probably allowed for the U.S. to be successful during World War II.
“When I think about it I had 10-12 jobs by the time I finished high school,” he said. “We were all poor, but I don’t think we realized how poor. I think we were simply accustomed to being responsible for ourselves. It forced us to mature a lot quicker.”
That being said, Jones acknowledges there is nothing quite like war.
On his very first mission in August of 1944, an assignment to bomb a German airfield near Vienna, Austria, nine of the 27 bombers in the squadron were shot down.
“It was traumatic to say the least,” he said.
B-24s had crews of 10 people with two pilots, a navigator, a bombardier and six gunners. Jones, who was the taller of two Jones on his crew, was nicknamed Big Jones. He said when they weren’t flying missions soldiers rarely talk to other crews.
“You didn’t want to get close
because you knew the odds were against you that you’d make it back from each mission,” he said. “You’d see planes go down too often not to think about it. You had to convince yourself it was going to happen to somebody else instead of you.”
Jones, whose group flew out of Southern Italy, said he later learned the average crew during the war had only lasted 12 missions. Some people handled the stress of the dangerous missions better than others.
“I remember we had our morning briefing and we’re getting ready to go,” he said. “When we went out to the plane our tail gunner, this fella that had flown six or seven mission with us, couldn’t get on the plane. He just froze up. He never flew again. A tail gunner is a very important part of a crew and we didn’t want him with us if he couldn’t handle
it. I never felt critical of the guy. The tension attached to each mission is immense. It’s really hard to explain what you felt. Each one of us has a different level of what we can withstand.”
For Jones, the thought process that allowed him to do the job was simple.
“If you didn’t do the job then somebody else was going to have to take your place,” he said. “I didn’t want to do that to anybody. I always felt I was up to the challenge.”
In rehashing how lucky he felt, Jones recalled how his flight crew was given a short break after a series of difficult missions. While his crew was visiting the Isle of Capri a bombing mission on Oct. 13, 1944 saw his bomb group suffer its greatest single-mission loss ever, losing about one thirds of the planes participating, including his squadron, the 727th, losing half of the bombers involved in that mission.
After completing 35 missions Jones was discharged in 1945 and returned to his home state of Indiana. He would go on to graduate from Indiana University and then become a consultant to the federal government during the presidency of Dwight Eisenhwer, serving as the managing partner of the Washington D.C. and Seattle offices of Alexander Grant and Company.
His work gave him the opportunity to meet three presidents and even dance in the White House during one visit.
After leaving the military Jones said he rarely talked about his experience.
“It wasn’t until I was 70 year old when I realized that a lot
of people out there didn’t really have much knowledge about World War II that I started talking about it,” he said. “Most of the people I knew didn’t know I’d been in the service.”
After retiring in 2004, Jones, who has played a prominent role in organizing reunions with military veterans over the years, decided to capture some of his fellow soldiers stories.
In 2007 he published a book titled, “Some personal histories of surviving members of the 451st bomb group, fifteenth Air Force World War II.”
At age 86 Jones said his military experience was invaluable in his civilian life.
“I think it’s been very helpful,” he said. “It really puts things in perspective. The challenges I’ve experienced in life have been very minor in comparison to what I had to deal with during the war.”
So does that mean he expects to resume his golfing career some time soon?
“I still need to get the hand stronger, but we’ll see,” he said while rubbing the hand with a knowing smile.

That perspective hopefully will dull the pain of the Jaguars season-ending loss to the No. 19 seeded Mountain Pointe Pride, 43-36 at home on Feb. 15 in the first round of the Division I state tournament.
In a game that saw the No. 14 seed from Anthem score their season-low point total, 10 points worse than their next lowest game, Boulder Creek (23-7) didn’t make its first field goal of the fourth quarter until only six second remained in the game.
In an ugly game offensively, the Jaguars struggled with freshman point guard Darian Slaga on the bench for most of the second quarter with two fouls and then sitting for a stretch in the second half. Despite their struggles they went to the fourth quarter up 30-28 against a Mountain Pointe squad they had beaten just eight days previously.
Over the game’s final eight minutes the Jaguars imploded, missing their first 14 shots from the field and turning the ball over six times. Up until the last second basket their 4-of-6 shooting from the free throw line accounted for their only points.
For the game junior center Sam Young led the Jaguars with nine points, while junior Delaney Swadder and Slaga each added seven.
Mountain Pointe had two players in double figures with Caitlyn Hetrick scoring a game-high 11 points and Kaylah Lupoe chipping in with 10.
The Boulder Creek boys basketball team saw their season come to a close a day later as the Jaguars (20-7) fell in overtime 66-63 to Desert Mountain in the first round of the Division-I state tournament.

the No. 16 seeded Wolves turned the tables on the No. 17 seeded Jaguars.
Just like the Jaguars, the Cactus Shadows Falcons lost in the first round of the state
tournament for the second consecutive season on Thursday. The No. 14 seeded Falcons (14-11) went into their first game of the Division II state tournament following a strong showing in

The endorsement of a political candidate by another politician generally draws a well-deserved yawn from voters. But over the past half-century of savoring and covering American politics, I have learned that an endorsement can tell us something quite important about the individual endorsing as well as about the individual being endorsed.
Permit me to tell you about Mississippi Republican Trent Lott, who in 1988 was the House minority whip while trying to win a close race for the U.S. Senate. That same year, then-Vice President George H.W. Bush was the heavy favorite to win the GOP nomination to succeed the term-limited President Ronald Reagan.
One of Bush’s underdog challengers in the primaries was Rep. Jack Kemp of New York. Ordinarily, discretion and self-interest would dictate that an ambitious Senate aspirant (Lott) would either prudently endorse the vice president or remain neutral. Instead, Trent Lott boldly tossed caution to the wind by endorsing his House colleague.
The next year, long after George H.W. Bush had won and had become the 41st president, I had a chat with Lott and told him how I admired his putting personal loyalty ahead of political advantage in endorsing Kemp and inviting
the wrath of the vaunted Bush political juggernaut. Sen. Lott answered me bluntly: “Today in Washington, there are two people who remember that I endorsed Jack Kemp — you and
President Bush!”
T h a t same year, Rep. Dick Gephardt, t h e M i s s o u r i Democrat,
tried to become the first U.S. House member since James A. Garfield in 1880 to win his party’s presidential nomination. Gephardt did in fact win the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses and, as a result, became president of Des Moines for a week.
what really impressed me about the Missorian’s campaign was the number and diversity of his House colleagues who went to Iowa on his behalf and who stayed to work by running a county campaign headquarters for their friend.
I can remember Reps. Sandy Levin of Michigan, Marvin Leath and Martin Frost of Texas, Mike Synar of Oklahoma, Dan Glickman of Kansas, Butler Derrick of South Carolina, Jim Cooper of Tennessee, Ed Jenkins of Georgia and Bob Wise of West Virginia. There were others. But the willingness of all of
them to sleep in unpretentious quarters, eat in marginal hash-houses and put in the long hours a campaign demands spoke volumes about Gephardt and the rare loyalty he inspired. Yes, he lost the nomination fight, but to me, Dick Gephardt was a big 1988 winner.
Which brings us to 2012 and endorsements. Republican Newt Gingrich served 10 terms in the House, where he became speaker after being architect and engineer of the first GOP takeover in 40 years. During his 20 House years, Gingrich served with 489 House Republicans. According to his campaign, a grand total of 10 colleagues have come forward to endorse Gingrich.
For Rick Santorum, the news is just as bleak. During two House terms, he served with 222 Republican members, none of whom has seen fit to endorse him. In two terms in the U.S. Senate, Santorum served with 89 different GOP senators. None has endorsed Santorum.
Mitt Romney, as of this writing, has been endorsed by 63 current House members and 14 current senators, which may or may not tell us something about him or them.

I am running for Anthem Community Council to focus on community priorities. Facility Planning, Marketing, Economic Development and Safety are community priorities that must be addressed. I am eager to work hard, address Anthem priorities and offer something new. Let’s be honest, nothing is moving forward – the old ways aren’t working - so please give me the opportunity. Here are a few thoughts on some of the projects facing the ACC:
M e m b e r s h i p / P l a n n e d Community: I support Anthem becoming a planned community with a structure that allows homeowners a vote on major issues such as ACC increasing debt, dues above a pre-determined percentage and unplanned capital expenses above a pre-determined percentage. I recognize that the concept is not without hurdles such as voter apathy – but a strong board can overcome the hurdles.
Anthem residents are highly involved in community programs but not in council activities. I believe residents have lost faith in the council. We must re-energize and re-engage our residents. Creating “Anthem Ambassadors” will bring more voices to the table for decision making and brainstorming.
The outcome of increasing resident involvement in major decisions will make the board more accountable.
Facility Planning - The
Building: I am not a proponent of spending money just because we have money. However, the purchase of a building to act as a civic building has been identified as a need by residents since the 2008 CIMP Report. Resident input continues to point to a need. Thus, I am not opposed to the purchase of a building, provided it is the correct size, meets the identified needs and that all due diligence has been performed to include build-out/modification pricing, annual budget etc.
The first step in the process has begun; ACC staff are doing the due diligence. After the information is accumulated, residents will have the opportunity to review and voice their thoughts. As a council director I will review the information and the resident input objectively to come to a decision.
The “Building” project is only one piece of the Facility Planning puzzle. Projects like adding ball fields and providing performance venues are other pieces that make up the puzzle of how we spend our enhancement funds. My role as an ACC Director will be to see the big picture. My focus will be on Anthem as a whole – the maintenance and enhancement of our community.

To the lady who witnessed what happened and attempted to locate my wife, thanks for trying. To those reading this letter, beware it could, and probably has, happened to many of you. For all of us, if you ever witness such an event please jot down the guilty party’s license plate number and description of the car and leave it on the windshield of the victim’s car (unfortunately this didn’t happen in our case).
