Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which will be February 14 this year.

Lent is a six-week season of the Christian year in which we prepare ourselves for

Easter through prayer, self-examination, and repentance; and make a renewed

effort to walk in God’s ways. There are six Sundays in Lent, the last one Palm

Sunday. We say “Sundays in Lent” because all Sundays are supposed to be mini-

celebrations of Jesus’ resurrection, so they are not considered to be part of Lent.

The last week of Lent is Holy Week. It begins with our remembrance of Jesus’

triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday). We celebrate Jesus’ last supper

with his disciples, and his betrayal and arrest, on Maundy Thursday. Jesus was

crucified on Good Friday. Holy Week ends when he is in the tomb (Holy Sat-

urday).

Watch upcoming Sunday bulletins for special worship times during Holy Week.

Be sure to attend our February 14 Ash Wednesday service at 7:00 pm. And pick

up a Lenten devotional booklet, created by our own congregation members!

Lunch Bunch (formerly XYZ Group) will meet in Fellowship Hall Thursday, February 1. Af-ter a potluck meal at noon, Don Tack will share infor-mation with us about The

Servant Center, the only Christian organization in Grand Rapids that focuses on the most neglected segment of the city’s homeless population: persons suffering from severe neurological disorders such as schizophrenia. Please bring a dish to pass and a friend or two. Join us for a good time together and to learn about a very interesting program.

Wednesday Night Meals at 6:00 pm will continue through April 25 except during Holy Week, when we will meet at 6:00 pm on Maundy Thursday (March 29) instead. Marcia Sadler will continue to prepare and serve these meals at a cost of $7.00 each. Following the meal, singing and devotions, Pastor Dennis will lead a Bible study class when he is available. If Ludington Area Schools are closed on Wednesday because of bad weather, the Meal that night will be cancelled. Sunday Morning Coffee, Juice and Cookies are served in the narthex area from 9:00 to 11:00 am.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14. Fol-owing the 6:00 catered meal there will be an Ash Wednesday Service in the sanctuary at 7:00 pm. This year Lynne Gohn and Joan Kaatz have developed a special Lenten Devotional Booklet for you and your family to use during Lent: the daily devotions have been supplied by persons in our congregation. These will be available on the Literature Table in the east hallway by February 11.

Dear Friends, Thank you all so much for your well wishes and gifts this holiday season, and for my birthday. It is always nice to receive those words of encourage-

ment and blessings. I feel that I have been very blessed with candy, cookies, pastries, fudge… well, you know how Christmas treats are gifted. Thank you for all the time and effort that goes into those deli-cious gifts! Thank you, too, for your warm wishes and prayers for Laura and me as we plan our future to-gether. We have not set a date as of yet, and we are working through the process of planning around fami-ly and friends. Thank you for encouraging us on this journey. You have been very supportive of me, and once again I ask for a bit of additional support: Please do not feed the pastor any more high sugar content snacks. I am at a transitional point in my life, where if I don’t control what I eat better, I will need to be on insulin, and I hate the thought of using a needle of any kind! My goal is to be down to 200 pounds by June of this year, so I am asking you all to be my support group, cheerleaders, and if need be my dieticians. Oh, how I hate to give anyone that power! On a more professional note, February 17 will be the day in which we will be hosting a one-day grief retreat entitled “In the Bleak Mid-Winter”. Suggested mini-mum donation is $20 per person, which will include dinner and all materials needed. If cost is a problem, please let me know and we will arrange for some sort of scholarship, so that no one will find this a financial burden. Ms Laura J. Ruhle, CT and I will be present-ing material that we have learned through the teach-ings of Dr. Alan Wolfelt, using his companioning model of grief care. If you know of anyone who has suffered a loss of any kind please let them know about this program. More information and fliers will be forthcoming. Please note that this day is open to the communities around us, no matter if they attend this church or not. I am very happy to know that you all have committed so much to this church and its ministries, especially as you have made such efforts to have the building paid for in the next three years. You have been extremely

generous and committed to ensuring that we have a beautiful place in which to worship, and have made sacrifices so that our focus does not have to be on the mortgage. Thank you all so much as you have sup-ported your church with gifts, prayers and pledges. Every once and a while, in an effort to share what I have learned over the years, I mix my information to-gether and make erroneous statements. This happened on January 7 during the sermon. I made the statement that the Magi were not present with the shepherds at the birth of Christ, and this is true. I then went on to say they arrived some 3-6 years after his birth… that was incorrect, and I appreciate Doug Patterson for bringing this to my attention. The Magi most likely arrived two years after the birth of Jesus, as it specifi-cally states in the scriptures. I apologize for this mis-statement; and would suggest it only happens to prove that no matter how hard I try to make sure there is no wrong information in what I share with you, I am completely human, and do on rare occasions make a mistake. Concluding this letter, I have learned with great sad-ness that one of the local churches will be closing its doors at the end of the month. Some of the faithful of this congregation may come here to visit and check us out. Please be as welcoming as you have been to oth-ers. Let them know they are welcome to join with us as they feel they can. Let us encourage one another to come together to worship the Lord!

Blessings to all,

Pastor Dennis

Matching Gift - Capital Campaign

It is with Great Joy that I announce that we have successfully matched the $150,000 gift from an anonymous donor. As of January 16, we have received cash and pledges totaling $114,402. Your Administrative Board authorized that the bal-ance, $35,598, be moved from our General Fund to make up the difference so that we could receive the full $150,000 gift. At year-end our General Fund Balance was $88,935. After reviewing our budget for 2018, (and following the transfer of $35,598), we project our YE General Fund Balance to be $40,000. We feel that balance, along with our Contingency Fund of $50,000, provides adequate reserves for our Church. Thanks to everyone who supported this Matching Gift Campaign as well as the very successful Capital Campaign. And spe-cial thanks to the donor for the Matching Gift, Dennis Genson, Judy Downing and M. A. Ferguson for all of their work on both campaigns. Also, thanks to everyone for their prayers.

Dan Sleeman, Administrative Board Chair

Over Christmas, our Salvation Army Bell Ringing Campaign was a ring-ing success! This year, our church family and friends dingalinged for 230 hours at the west food door of our local

Walmart store. We raised thousands of dollars to help residents of Ludington/Mason County. We were blessed to have more than 57 people become dingalingers for this worthy cause. Our top ringers for the season were Stub Willick (Mr. Reliable) with 15 total ringing hours, Art Mur-phy with 14 hours, followed by Bill McBeth with 11 hours. Thank you guys, you’re the best. Thank you, everyone, for your wonderful spirit of giving and service to the Mason County Community. With 234 slots to fill, we have room for everyone. No experience necessary! Please consider being a Dingaling next year for the Salvation Army Bell Ringing Campaign. You will experience a feeling of service, a sense of community and a spirit of Christi-anity for our Lord! Thank you all so very much. Steve & Cyndi

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee? And the King will answer him, “Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my breth-ren, you did it to me.” Matthew 25:35-41, KJV

2018 Lenten Devotional

Thank you to all who have submitted a faith story for our upcoming 2018 Lenten Devotional. The devotion-al book is now being assembled. It will be distributed on Sunday, February 11, because the readings begin on Ash Wednesday, February 14. We have also included a few devotions written by our church family of the past, in the 1996-1998 devotional books. We hoped that our church family will make a commit-ment to read these daily devotions that have been so carefully written after much prayer. You will be blessed for sure. (Continued on page 6)

2017 (begun in 2005 with the help from

ladies at Scottville UMC)

Our prayer shawl ministry con-tinues to be very active, thanks to all the lovely la-dies who continue to make the shawls! Thank you! We have many beautiful shawls awaiting to brighten someone’s day in their time of need. We also have yarn and instructions available to knit the shawls. Shawls and yarn are always available, but only on display the 2nd Sunday of the month. The following people received a shawl this past year: Linda Myer, Mary Gwen Barrington, Lori Taylor, Rogene Kieszkowski, Gail Niethe, Ruth Streozelec, Mary Workman, Mr. Tyndall, Jyl Miller, Gloria Tay-lor, Adeline Lange, Aleatha Cox, and Sue Stinson. Laura Ruhle has taken several to her Hospice pa-tients. I am sure these people have been blessed by the warmth of God’s love and felt His healing and peaceful presence in their shawl. We continue to receive thank you notes for shawls, with words of how much the shawl has meant. Thank you also to all who have taken the time to take a prayer shawl to someone they know is in need and suffering in some way, and thank you also to those who continue to give a love offering to help with the purchase of yarn. This ministry is also sup-ported through our Evangelism Committee. Thank you again to all those who continue to knit these lovely shawls….Linda Myer, Cathy Kelly, Janice Young, Monica Stewart, Sharon Alexander, Gail Niethe, Pam Greb, Cheryl Lundberg, Mary Lou Mitteer, Samantha Johnson, Shirley Mitchell, Karen Disegna, and Jane Clark. If you have any questions concerning the Prayer Shawl Ministry, you may contact Ramona Myers @ 425-4408 or Lynne Gohn @ 843-4746.

Thank You, Prayer Warriors!

We pray for 30 days over the prayer cards that have been turned in. We also pray not only for those on our prayer list, but for the ongoing ministries and ac-tivities of our church family. Telephone Prayer Chain people are Vi DeMeester, Sandy Sgro, Sally Collins, Edna Nelson, Sheila McCallum, and Mary Bergh. The Email Prayer Chain consists of Pastor Dennis, Ken Tabor, Pastor Tom Evans, Donna Stover, Stacy Juers, Arlene Kel-sey, Sally Reed, Dawn Mumford, Lee Harrington, Linda Wolven, Ed & Maralee McCumber, Shirley Dust, Al Carlson, Pat Shinn, Sonja Schipper, Marcie Anderson, Karen Genson, SK Osborn, George & Christy Faust, Laurie McKinven-Copus, Donna Pe-terson, and Lynne Gohn. Feb. 2 - Executive Board 1:00 pm Feb. 5 - General Meeting/Soup & Bread Luncheon 12:30 pm. Call church by Feb. 1 if you need child care or a ride.

A big thank you to all the ladies who donated Christmas cookies and time and effort to do the West Shore Bank Open House again this year! The bank staff were appreciative, and UMW receives a $500 donation for doing that open house for them.

Thank you also to those who made the UMW Christmas Tea such a festive, enjoyable event for those attending. Thank you to Lynne Gohn and the Joy Singers for their beautiful program, to Janelle Schade for decorating, and to all those who made delicious food!

The Ladies’ Lunch Date is Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 12:45 pm at Brenda’s Café. There will be a signup sheet in the office. Please sign up if you think of it, but don’t stay away if you forgot to sign up. Come and join us! Note: If the Ludington Area Schools have a snow day that day, we will cancel the Ladies’ Lunch Date.

This is a long overdue report on one of our major mission projects. Each summer the UMW members meet to put together cherry pies. Costs of our sup-plies come out of the UMW treasury. However, the main ingredient, the cherries, are donated by Hack-ert Farms. Roy and David compliment us about the quality, flavor, and presentation of our pies. Our hope is to continue to make pies as a project. It has been an excellent fundraiser, helped immensely by this donation. They say they are the best pies (church pies) they have had. They think it’s the cherries. I think it is the preparation. Together we are a success.

Sincerely, Joan Schwass

We will serve Community Table from 4:30 to 6:00 pm at Community Church on Tuesday, February 27. If you’d like to help pre-pare or serve this meal, please contact Jennifer MacDonald at 690-8944, Don-na Possehn at 690-1647, or Allan Carl-son at 843-7071. Thanks in advance for your willingness to help with this important service to the community.

I want to thank all my kind Methodist family for all the beautiful cards that were sent to me after my back surgery. Know-ing there are titanium rods and screws

holding my lower back together is kind of strange, but I am doing pretty well. Thanks again. Sara Jones It is wonderful to have a hometown church. When this church prays for me it is a 47-year relationship. With God and people who have prayed for me for 47 years, all things are possible. Thank you, thank you for your love and support; thank you for your constant prayers. I thank God each night for my hometown church. Pat Trowbridge Lenten Devotional, continued from page 4 Some people have commented that they would like an extra copy for a family member. Please let us know, so that we may have enough printed. You may call the church, or contact Joan Kaatz at 231-398-8253 or Lynne Gohn at 843-4746.
