Trucks come and trucks go out day after day. We knew we were busier than the past year and the past year was busier than the year before that. Until you really look at the numbers you do not realize how many more pounds are moving through our doors. It is exciting to know that the increase means we have fed more people. Looking at the graph, in the past four years we have increased our distribution by 140%. The more food we receive the more people we can feed. The need is al-ways greater, which is why we strive to continually acquire new donors.

Mobile Food Pantry Provides New Method of Food Distribution In October of 2010, the Food Bank began working on a new project called a Mobile Food Pantry. A mobile pantry is a method of food distribution that utilizes a refrigerated vehicle to provide food in communities that may lack sufficient access to food. The purpose of the mobile pantry is to ex-pand and increase the capacity for "normal" food pantries so that they can reach more needy peo-ple in their areas. By having the truck at the site, the program's normal refrigerated space is ex-panded, allowing them to give more perishable products out.

Through November and December, the food bank ran a pilot program of the Mobile Pantry throughout the state. During that time, we had 30 pantries host the truck to distribute over 300,000 pounds to WV families! The expanded capacity allowed programs to give out more frozen meats, fruits, vegetables and dairy items. The Mobile Pantry program will help programs that lack the space to handle large quantities of food, as well as reach areas that are underserved. Mountaineer Food Bank will continue to expand the Mobile Pantry in 2011. To learn more or donate towards the Mobile Pantry, visit our website at mountaineerfoodbank.org.

Mountaineer Food Bank’s mission is to alleviate hunger in West Virginia. Food and other items are received from a variety of sources such as; corporate donors, retail stores, growers, manufacturers and food drives. All of these donations are re-ceived and distributed into 48 West Virginia counties through an exten-sive network of over 500 feeding programs. These feeding programs are food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, day cares, senior nutrition sites, after school programs and chil-dren’s weekend programs. Our success is attributed to the sup-port we have from our donors both food and financial. We want to thank you on behalf of the hungry people we serve daily.

Our Annual Open House and Volunteer Recognition

Food Lion and Western Union Foundation Donate $20,000 to Support Child Hunger Programs at Mountaineer Food Bank

Mountaineer Food Bank held its annual Open House and Volun-teer Recognition on May 11, 2011. Each year, the food bank recognizes those volunteers who have dedicated their time to helping hunger relief efforts in West Virginia. This is always a day of celebration because our volunteers are another part of achieving our mission.

Food Lion and Western Union Foundation have joined forces to support programs that enrich the lives of children served by Feeding America food banks. Hungry children are sick more often, they may suffer growth impairments, and hungry children can incur devel-opmental impairments that limit their physical, intellectual and emotional development. Mountaineer Food Bank, along with nine other food banks, are the recipients of $20,000 grants in support of ad-dressing child hunger. “Delhaize America has a long-standing history of corporate responsibility and assisting those in need in the com-munities they serve,” said Vicki Escarra, President and CEO of Feeding America. “For nearly 10 years Food Lion and Delhaize America have donated food and funds and have partnered with more than 40 of our food banks.

“The Western Union Foundation is proud to support the educational programs of Feeding America. With oppor-tunities to help educate and inform others, as well as those whose needs are supported by the organization to ad-dress child hunger, we all are able to make a difference in the current and future lives of these children,” said Luella Chavez D'Angelo, President The Western Union Foundation.

Feds Feed Families Kicks Off Summer Campaign The 2011 Feds Feed Families Campaign kicked off on June 1 as the federal employees try to top last year's record total of 1.7 million pounds collected across the country. The Feds Feed Families is an annual gov-ernment food drive running from June to September. In 2009, the Office of Personnel Management started the campaign by asking all Federal employees to help feed their communities by bringing in food donations through those months. Federal agencies can contact the food bank to request food collection barrels for their offices. For more information on the campaign, visit www.fedsfeedfamilies.gov.

Rotary District 7530 Donates 2,000 Turkeys Rotary District 7530, which includes Rotary Clubs from North-Central West Virginia, made a donation of 2,000 turkeys to Mountaineer Food Bank before Thanksgiving. The turkeys were distributed right before the holidays, to help needy families in the state. The turkeys were purchased through Walmart, and then loaded onto the food bank's truck. "Rotary District 7530 is pleased to partner with Mountaineer Food Bank to distribute 2,000 turkeys this year," said Ed Powell. "The heart of Rotary is to provide humanitar-ian programs in our local communities and around the world. Rotary is all about partners and this year, we found a way to team up with Rotary districts in India to provide the funds required for this project. Throughout the week of Thanksgiving, Rotary members volunteered at food pantries to hand out turkeys to families. Mountaineer Food Bank would like to thank all of the Rotary Clubs in District 7530 for their contribution to this donation.
