FOR A WORLD FREE OF PARASITIC WORM INFECTIONS
We are a non-profit initiative based at Imperial College London.
Our vision is a world free of parasitic worm infections.
Our mission is to support the development of effective and sustainable systems that will eliminate parasitic worm infections.
WHAT ARE PARASITIC WORM INFECTIONS?
They include schistosomiasis and intestinal worm infections.
They are estimated to infect over 1 billion people in some of the world’s poorest communities.
They affect people without access to clean water and sanitation.
The highest levels of infection are mostly found in school-age children.
PARASITIC WORM INFECTIONS CAN RESULT IN:
Reduced school attendance
Reduced productivity
Impaired child development
Increased risk of HIV in women
InfertilityInternal organ damage
IMPACT OF TREATMENT
Early and regular treatment of parasitic worms infections has the potential to:
Increase school attendance by 25%
Increase future earnings by 40%
Reduce the damaging effects of infection
Treatment is safe and effective
Help governments to deliver programmes in 15 sub-Saharan African countries and have delivered over 150 million treatments since 2002.
n Countries SCI supports
Aim to treat all individuals at-risk of infection.
* For every treatment provided against schistosomiasis, we also aim to offer treatment against intestinal worm infections in at-risk areas.† Average results demonstrated for all country programmes where data are available.
Are committed to the attainment of 9 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Can reduce parasitic worm infections by up to 60% after one round of treatment.†
THE PROGRAMMES WE SUPPORT:*
We have been consistently ranked as one of the MOST COST-EFFECTIVE NON-PROFIT INITIATIVES in the world by
GiveWell, an international charity evaluator
Every £1 donated
can treat up to
three people‡
* Average results demonstrated for all country programmes where data are available.† For every treatment provided against schistosomiasis, we also aim to offer treatment against intestinal worm infections in at-risk areas.‡ The World Health Organization has set out that at least 75% of people targeted for treatment, should go on to receive it. Our partners reach 76%, on average.
Ensure equal access regardless of gender.
Ensure equal access regardless of wealth status.
Meet WHO treatment coverage targets.‡
Are cost effective:
THE PROGRAMMES WE SUPPORT:*†
1. Partnerships We are collaborative, promoting inclusion and synergy. We act as catalysts in the creation of successful cross-sectoral partnerships that generate the greatest impact on disease transmission.
2. Operational Excellence and Innovation We are agile, adapting to changing local and global environments. We aim to constantly improve and innovate, to ensure that we optimise our efforts and use resources most cost-effectively.
3. Sustainability We ensure that our work is sustainable and supports broader development. We support governments to strengthen systems and processes, so that they are dynamic, responsive and deliver results.
4. Evidence-based We generate evidence to inform decisions and guide our work. We improve processes and develop preferred practices for global health policy. We share knowledge to ensure that everyone can benefit from improved health.
