Pets

While they were growing up my two older daughters never had a pet. Do I sound mean? Not so! I had a very legitimate reason for no pets in our household. One of the children was very allergic to fur and feathers and many other things too. Her father and I were secretly quite happy about this as neither one of us actually wanted to have any animals in our house. It was enough effort to care for two little girls we felt besides having to worry about a dog or cat's needs. Whenever we decided to go on a trip we never had to concern ourselves about dog kennels or leaving enough food for the cat.

One night, quite late, our younger daughter became very ill necessitating us taking her to see a doctor near midnight. We called the doctor on call who agreed to meet us at the Clinic. After examining her he decided that she was fine and told us to take her home. His exact comment was, “Little children are like puppies, they need lots of love and affection!” I was furious! My reply, ”My children get lots of love and affection!”

I dressed her quickly and we rushed out of that clinic to drive home. I sat up with her the rest of the night. The next morning, I called our family physician who also listened to her chest and admitted her to hospital immediately. This was less than 10 hours later. She was there for 10 days. The love and affection that childless doctor lavished on his dogs was no comparison in my mind to the nurturing I daily gave to my children.

Later this backfired on me. I had always wanted to have a fur coat. When the time came that I was actually preparing to purchase one, I brought my daughters to Levine's Ladies' Wear. When my younger daughter came within 10 feet of the rack of coats she immediately she began to sneeze and cough. The decision was made for me. I never bought one.

Later we were fortunate to have a third daughter. She just loved animals! “Please, please Mommy can I have a pet?” I had her Dad (not me!) explain to her why this could not happen in our house. We finally agreed to her having a tiny baby turtle. That satisfied her for a little while but she soon

got bored with it, no surprise to us. This was a very active child and a turtle was just not enough. I'm not sure how she got around us but we agreed to a fluffy white rabbit with the instructions that it would always remain in its cage outside. One day she went to check on it after school and the rabbit was gone! Where to search? Unfortunately, that rabbit got cold and had climbed under the hood onto the motor of our car where it was warm. You can guess the rest. No more rabbit!

After her older sisters had left the nest we acceded to her request for a hamster. Off to the pet store we went. It took her a long time but finally she chose a cute one. We purchased a cage, food, a wheel for it to run on because these little creatures need exercise of course. In the car on the way home to Lively, didn't that hamster chew through the cardboard box from the pet store and get loose in the car. Stop the car! All three of us were on our hands and knees searching for that darn little hamster. Dad was not happy! Because of its colour it blended in with the upholstery and it took us a while to find it. Once at home she was instructed to put the little animal in its cage fastening it securely. Hamsters are nocturnal and it ran on that wheel all night long while we tried to sleep. I can still hear it!

Today, that daughter has two cats and a beautiful Burmese Mountain Dog - the size of a small pony. But hey, it's not my problem and Max is quite docile and friendly. However, with those huge paws of his if he steps on your foot, it hurts.

Food for ThoughtHeard of moringa? If not, you soon will. This strange sound-ing leaf powder supplement is one of the latest superfoods to gain the limelight - and for good reason. Moringa boasts a powerhouse of free-radical-fighting, anti-inflammatory, and healing compounds that benefit your heart, head, skin, and more.

Moringa, a nutrient-packed plant found in India, is also known as the “miracle tree.” With antifungal, antiviral, antidepressant, and anti-inflammatory properties, it has been used for generations to treat skin, digestive and heart conditions, to name a few and it possesses more antioxidants than other superfoods like acai and green tea.

Want to learn more about moringa’s benefits? Here’s your quick guide to what moringa can bring to your plate and how to best use this powerful little plant.

Treats and prevents diabetes: Moringa leaf is a useful natural supplement for treating and preventing diabetes and may even reverse type 1 and 2 diabetes in studies with rats.

Lowers inflammation: Moringa is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent and helps soothe chronic inflammation in your body by suppressing inflammatory enzymes.

Keeps skin clear: and its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties can also help clear skin problems such as acne or blackheads.

Treats low-iron anemia: Moringa is an ideal iron supplement and perfect for vegetarians who may need help hitting their iron and protein intake.

Protects your kidneys and liver: Certain compounds present in moringa help to protect your kidney and liver against toxins or drug exposure.

Defends against cognitive decline: Another benefit of moringa’s high antioxidant content is its ability to protect your brain tissue against neurodegeneration

and damage.

Moringa powder: In western countries, moringa leaves are dried and ground, sold as a powder or capsules. You can add moringa powder to your smoothies or soups, or use it as a tea. It has a a mild asparagus-like flavor.

An old guy walks into a bar and the bartender asks for ID. “You’ve got to be kidding,” he said. “I’m almost 60 years old.” The bartender apologized, but said he had to see the license. The guy showed his ID, then paid and told the bartender to keep the change. “The tip’s for carding me,” he said. The bartender put the change in the tip cup. “Thanks,” he said. “Works every time.”

Bob, aged 92, and Mary, aged 89, were excited about their decision to get married. While out for a stroll to discuss the wedding, they passed a drug store. Bob suggested they go in.

Bob asked to speak to the pharmacist. He explained they’re about to get married, and

asked, "Do you sell heart medication?" "Of course we do," the pharmacist replied. "Medicine for rheumatism?" "Definitely," he said. "How about Viagra?" "Of course." Medicine for memory problems, arthritis, jaundice?" "Yes, the works." What about vitamins, sleeping pills, Geritol, antacids?" "Absolutely." "Do you sell wheelchairs and walkers?" "All speeds and sizes." "Good," Bob said to the pharmacist. "We’d like to register for our wedding gifts here, please.

Benefits of Pole Walking for Seniors and Older Adults

If you’re like most Canadians, you’re probably not spending enough time being active. Given that, how do you get the most bang for your buck, so to speak, when it

comes to exercise? Nordic pole walking might be just the ticket. It uses roughly 90% of the muscles in your body and has been a fitness staple in Europe for decades. So, what are the benefits of pole walking - and why is it one of the best forms of exercise for seniors and older adults? Read on to find out.

Nordic pole walking - sometimes called Nordic walking, pole walking, or even urban pole walking - turns a simple walk into a full-body workout by incorporating the upper body and core muscles to a much greater degree. Compared to other forms of exercise, pole walking uses up to 60% more muscles and burns up to 900 calories per hour. Compare this to 240 calories per hour for regular walking or 440 calories for an aerobics fitness class, and it’s easy to see why pole walking is such a fantastic workout.

What’s more, it also improves your endurance, heart health, blood flow, strength, and resting metabolic rate (the number of calories you burn while at rest). Many clinical studies have shown the vast benefits of pole walking, especially for

seniors. Pole walking contributes to faster weight loss, healthy weight maintenance, and improved posture, all of which become more challenging in your later years. For people recovering from knee or hip surgery or anyone with balance issues, Nordic pole walking can help you get moving again with the added support of the poles.

If pole walking is such a fantastic exercise for seniors, why is it that most North American’s have never heard of it? Nordic pole walking was developed in Finland in the early 1990s as a way for Nordic (cross-country) skiers to train during the warmer months. It took off as a low-impact form of exercise in Europe in the ensuing decades. It’s now one of the most popular types of exercise for seniors - and others - in Northern Europe. It wasn’t until recently, though, that it started gaining popularity this side of the Atlantic. Why exactly it remains largely unknown isn’t clear, but what is clear is that you should try adding it to your routine. All you need is a set of poles (available from most sporting goods stores or online) and a willingness to try something new. The benefits of pole walking speak for themselves.

By Retire at Home

“Anyone whose goal is 'something higher' must expect someday to suffer vertigo. What is vertigo? Fear of falling? No, Vertigo is something other than fear of falling. It is the voice of the emptiness below us which tempts and lures us, it is the desire to fall, against which, terrified, we defend ourselves.”

Sudbury

Sudbury was founded in 1893 with its first mayor being Stephen Fournier. The main reason for the founding of Sudbury was the uncovering of a nickel deposit in 1883. During an excavation to clear room for a railway an explosion revealed a huge amount of copper and nickel ore. Mining became the main source of income for the sister after roads were put in place.

The mining company INCO was founded in 1902 and Falconbridge was found in 1928. Sudbury's economy fluctuated with the demand for nickel. Since nickel was in high demand during the great depression Sudbury was one of the fastest recovering cities in the depression. Sudbury's economy also boomed during both world wars because nickel was needed to make artillery shells. The city also supplied nickle to The United States during the Cold War. Sudbury was one of the wealthiest cities in Canada for about a decade. In 1972 the construction of the INCO Superstack released hazardous chemical all over the environment.

Ever since then Vale (recently INCO) has been trying to redevelop the area. In 1978 mining

workers working for Inco went on strike for nine months which badly damaged Sudbury's economy. This what caused Sudbury to start spreading into new industries to support the economy. In 2001, Sudbury and the surrounding area was founded as the City of Greater Sudbury.

I Love...

I love to watch the little ones Enjoying winter's snow; They frolic in the midst of it Their faces all aglow. Just watch them as they laugh and shout See how their faces shine! Just watch them play and slide In the newly fallen snow. (Anon)

When I was teaching I taught my small pupils a poem that began;

"The fenceposts wear marshmallow hats All on a winter's day...."

There is much beauty in winter if we choose to see it. The evergreens laden with capes of snow, the sun sparkling on new-fallen snow, skaters gliding on the path on Lake Ramsey or at the Queen's Athletic Field oval, skiers swooping down the hills with smiles on their faces. Children hope for a Snow Day when a blizzard blows so they can enjoy an unexpected holiday to build snowmen and forts, make snow angels in the yard, go tobogganing and sliding.

We at the ParkSide are always looking for volunteers. If you would enjoy helping at the front desk, particularly on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, just call us at 705.673.6227. We also need help in the kitchen and giving tours of the centre.

Walking during a soft snowfall in the evening is a calming and enjoyable experience.

Even though winter is not my favourite season I cannot deny its' attractive qualities. Since I am living in this Northern Ontario climate where winter lasts for numerous months, I have to accept this reality.

Paper Tole

Paper tole involves having two or more copies of the same image (such as a photograph) them cutting out parts of that image working from the largest piece at the bottom and smallest pieces at the top to build up a layered or 3D picture. Cutting is generally done with a knife or other precision cutting tool. Assembly requires patience while the artisan carefully attaches the separate pieces onto the print. An

understanding and knowedge of per- spective is also an important skill. Though there are a number of ways to use paper tole, one of the most popular is to frame the image in a deep wall frame and display it as wall art. Drop in to the ParkSide and learn how it is done
