Ken Klipp was very humbled to be honored at this race. Ken came to McNa- mara in 1979. Prior to that, he taught at Manteno High School for 7 years. In 1980, for the first time, Bishop McNamara had a men’s and women’s cross country program. Ken has been the cross country coach at McNamara for 35 years and continues to do so today. The first McNamara Cross Country team to qualify for state was the Lady Irish in 1987. The men’s first team to qualify was in 1988. Since that time, there have been 25 McNamara cross country teams that have qualified for state under coach Klipp’s guidance! We have won 18 regional and 2 sectional meets. The 1995 team placed 2nd at the state meet. Under Ken, there have been 10 McNamara cross country runners who have been named to the All-State team. In 2004, Ken Klipp received the highest honor from the Illinois track and cross country coaches by being selected into the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame. Hello Irish Alumni! I am Sarah Piggush Mickler, and I graduated with the class of 1999. My husband Pat and I have two children Ella and Alex - future Mac alumni. I am the third generation in my fam-ily to graduate from St. Patrick and Bishop McNamara High School, and have a great understanding of what an impact Catholic educa-tion can make. I have the honor of being your alumni president for the next two years. The Alumni board is very excited about the 2014-2015 year. Many thanks to Tricia Dotson for all her hard work and dedication the past two years and continued involvement in our campaign to “Choose to be More”. The Alumni board has a lot of great things planned for the upcom-ing school year. As always, we will continue to publish the Irish Update as this has been a valued communication tool. We look forward to seeing you at the Homecoming game and hearing from alumni volunteers that want to be part of the great things that are happening at McNamara. This is going to be a great year for Bishop McNamara and our Alumni support is pinnacle in making that happen.

Sincerely,Sarah Piggush Mickler ’99Irish Alumni Association President

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Terry GrangerI once heard a message from an individual known for his gracious

generosity specifically to Catholic institutions. His message was very simple, “Don’t give until it hurts rather, give until it feels good!” Gen-erous giving fills the heart with joy. I see this in the faces of so many in our Bishop McNamara community who give from their hearts and I thank all of you.

I am so grateful for our faculty and staff who selflessly give their lives to help our students develop academically and spiritually. I am so thankful for those who tirelessly work as members of our administrative and advancement teams. It is the collection of all of these people that leads us through our strategic plan implementation and into a bright and promising future!

I am so grateful for the many benefactors of Bishop McNamara and am continually amazed at the giving from the heart that takes place each year. I am especially grateful to the many alumni who generously give to our tuition assistance program. You are ensuring that every student who wishes to attend Bishop McNamara can do just that. Through your generosity students are afforded the opportunity to learn and to live out the commitment and work ethic necessary to be successful at McNamara. This in turn, prepares them for their future years at colleges and universities of their choice, as well as chosen careers and professions.

I am so grateful to our volunteers who give of their time and talent to teach, inspire, and help raise funds for the students of McNamara. One great example of this is the chairs, co-chairs, and numerous volunteers who, throughout the thirty years of our annual dinner auction, have made that event a tremendous success each and every year!

Most importantly, I am most grateful for our students past, present, and future. The alumni of McNamara continue to go out into the world and make McNamara proud. They are the true success of Bishop McNamara High School! Thanks to all of you and your generosity, their future and the future of McNamara is bright! Without your continued giving from the heart we couldn’t do all that we do. May God continue to bless you and your families!

Respectfully,Terry Granger ’76Principal

We are all enjoying the hustle and bustle that goes with a new school year beginning. It’s great to see the students back in the building ea-ger to begin their new studies and activities for the year! You will see in this edition of the Irish Update many of the great events that have happened over these past few months. A very successful 30th Annual Dinner Auction and Raffle took place in May. Our newest alumni, the Class of 2014, have graduated. The Irish Golf Classic was a huge hit in July. Our inaugural Ken Klipp 5K Run/2 Mile Walk touched all of our hearts. We are also thrilled to see the many class reunions that are hap-pening. All of these alumni will reminisce about the era that made them the successful individuals they are today - as much of our success is directly related to the Catholic upbringing that took place within the walls of this great institution. Many of the values we hold dear and many of our most precious and lasting friendships evolved while we were students here at Bishop McNamara High School. As always, we are truly grateful for all the generosity and kindness you have given this past year. We will remember you in our daily prayers.

Kindest regards,Sandy LaMotte Malpasuto ’82Coordinator of Advancement

Jim Frogge began his career at Bishop McNamara High School in 1972 teaching earth science and physics. His intent was to come back after graduating and teach for a year or two… that year or two lasted a little longer than planned and ended up being what he would do for a total of 42 years. Jim moved into teaching chemistry, physical science, physics, and some cal-culus. During his time here, Jim coached football, girls’ basketball, track, and also wrestling for a period of time.

With the introduction of the computer, Jim became the leader at McNamara to understand and use it. Back in the early 1980’s he first brought computers to the school. He was our pioneer in this field. He took some computer courses but was primarily self-taught and intrigued by the new challenges it brought.

Jim worked with people that became his best friends for life. He is a godfather to many of his coworker’s children. Jim was a mentor to many faculty and staff at Bishop McNamara helping them to grow in their careers.

Jim was a master teacher and his biggest goal was for his students to become independent thinkers and prob-

lem solvers. He instilled confidence and perseverance in his students. He always kept his students at the top of his priorities. His former students hold him in high regard whether it was from the depth of informa-tion he gave them or the life skill of how to prepare a “hobo” dinner on a very cold camping trip. Jim had a profound way of encouraging students to explore unique and distinct college opportunities based on his keen awareness of the strengths and individual qualities each of his students possessed.

Congratulations Jim for an outstand-ing career! The Bishop McNamara family

wishes you much happiness in your years of retirement. We hope you come back to visit often. Thank you for all you have given to the faculty, staff, and most importantly the students of Bishop McNamara High School!

Jim is married to Maggie Hansen Frogge ‘68 and they are the parents of Jessica ‘00, Sarah ‘02, and Nathan ‘05.

Please feel free to send cards and well wishes to Jim c/o Bishop McNamara’s Advancement Office, 550 West Brookmont Blvd., Kankakee, IL 60901.

Emily Summers Skelly is a Class of ’92 graduate. She married David Skelly ’84 in 2007 and has two children, Noah Hayden (13 yrs.) and Emilia (4 yrs.). After Bishop McNamara, she went on to Illinois State Univer-sity and earned a degree in psy-chology. Emily also has a master’s degree in professional counseling from Olivet Nazarene University. Her professional experience includes outpatient counseling and life skills training for disadvan-taged youth, human resources, and a brief stint working for her parents’ trucking business. Most of Emily’s experi-ence in education is from her tenure at Kankakee Com-munity College, where she started in 2008. At KCC, she worked in the Institutional Research Office then became Coordinator of Career Development. Emily also has post-secondary teaching experience, has worked on special projects such as developing a first-year experience pro-gram, retention and career & technical education for high school students. She is a member of the American Counseling Association, an MBTI® (Myers-Briggs Type In-dicator) certified consultant, and an active member of the Riverview Historic Board in Kankakee. In her free time, she loves to spend time with her family on their boat, and to complete home improvement projects. Emily likes run-

Many of our young alumni do not receive copies of The Irish Update at their own residences as the address we have on file for many is that of their parents. We are happy to send copies to colleges and universities where they attend as well - we want them to enjoy reading about their classmates and all of the happenings here at Bishop McNamara. Contact the Advancement Office to update their information at 815-933-7620 or email at [email protected].

Bishop McNamara High S chool has always had a proud tradition of family, faith, academics, athlet-ics, and the opportunity for success. We have now rolled out a new tra-dition to offer further opportunities for McNamara students. The Bishop McNamara High School House Sys-tem has been presented to the school community. The McNamara House System is intended to build a positive school culture; to devel-op student leadership and to offer more opportunities for leadership; to emphasize service; to provide mentoring; to encourage student relationships across grade levels and throughout the school com-munity; to highlight student talents and interests, to foster school spirit, and to promote a fun and fulfilling school life for all our students.

Every McNamara student and faculty is a member of one of five houses. Once a member of a house that person is a member for life - any sibling or parent at the school will also be a member of that house. In keeping with our Irish identity, the houses have been named for Irish cities or towns; they are Donegal, Dublin, Killarney, Limerick, and Wa-terford. Each house is made up of seniors, juniors, sophomores, fresh-men, and faculty. The houses are led by senior house captains – em-phasizing self-governance. Each house has crests and motto that support their missions and each will select a service or altruistic project.

Numerous leadership positions will be available throughout the year.

The McNamara House System is built around a yearlong competi-tion. The houses compete against each other for the coveted “Irish Cup.” Competitions will be in the areas of academics, the arts, intra-murals, service, grade point aver-

The Scholar Society was established by the Bishop McNamara Catholic High School Foundation in 2007 with the purpose of raising funds to provide tuition assistance to current junior students with high grade point averages. For the 2014-15 school year, $1,000 scholarships were awarded to five (5) new junior recipients. Scholar Society members contribute gifts of $100 per person toward these scholarships each year. Through this continued stewardship, Bishop McNamara is able to continue to provide a quality Catholic education to many students.

The Scholar Society Members for the 2014-15 school year are:
