To provide children aged 9 months to 5 years old with an active start to life through learning and developing within a fun, safe and stimulating environment which promotes daily physical activity and an early education focused around a healthy lifestyle.

At Rookies we believe that children should be encouraged to be active and learn with their parents how they can adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles. The principles of sport and how they can help develop children’s bodies and minds are central to our curriculum and daily activities.

Pupil Education Physical activity is central to our curriculum with pupils being encouraged to learn through being active. All pupils receive a curriculum which follows the Government’s Early Years Foundation Stage Guidelines, with added opportunities to develop their awareness of a healthy lifestyle.

Parental Education In addition to educating our pupils’ parents about the importance of being active and looking after their bodies, we also encourage our pupils’ parents to attend a series of monthly workshops which help guide families about ways in which they can adopt active and healthy lifestyles.

The Rookies WayRookies is proud to be different and proud to be the first day nurseryin the world which has a curriculum designed to let children be active and healthy.

NutritionNutrition is a key part of the Rookies lifestyle and we believe passionately about not only providing our children with fresh nutritionally balanced food, but also in educating them about a balanced diet. Fresh food is also at the heart of our learning processes, with children encouraged to use fresh food such as vegetables in learning opportunities such as art. All food provided to children at Rookies is fresh and prepared on site by our trained experienced chefs, in our bespoke kitchen.

We cater for children with allergies and work closely in partnership with parents to implement food plans which suit the needs of these individual children. Please see below a sample menu which has been designed in conjunction with Stevenage FC’s Sports Science and Nutrition Team, in order to provide children with a balanced diet for an active lifestyle.

Rookies operates a four week rotational seasonal menu which uses seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables.

All children will be provided with water and fresh whole milk during their time at Rookies.

ChildrenBeing active is a fundamental part of being a Rookie and is central to our curriculum with pupils being encouraged to learn through being active. All pupils receive a curriculum which follows the Government’s Early Years Foundation Stage Guidelines, with added opportunities to be active through our enrichment classes.

In 2011 UK Public Health Physical Activity Guidelines for Under 5’s were introduced which recommend under 5’s should be active for three hours a day and state that: - Physical activity should be encouraged from birth, particularly through floor-based play and water-based activities in safe environments.

- All under 5’s should minimise the amount of time spent being sedentary (being restrained or sitting) for extended periods (except time spent sleeping).

Individual physical and mental capabilities should be considered when interpreting the guidelines.

The benefits of being active include: • Develops motor skills • Improves cognitive development • Contributes to a healthy weight • Enhances bone and muscular development • Supports learning of social skills

Active AM’sAt Rookies we begin every day with Active AM’s which is a 15 minute programme aimed to prepare our 2-5 year olds for their exciting and active day ahead. Active AM’s allow children to express themselves through a variety of structured and freeform dance moves, as well as fun and active games.

ParentsIn addition to educating our children about the importance of being active and looking after their bodies, we also encourage our children’s parents to attend a series of monthly workshops which help guide families about ways in which they can adopt an active and healthy lifestyle.

These workshops are run by professionals from the sports and health industry and include practical activities and ideas which can be implemented in your family’s day to day lives. Workshop topics include diet and nutrition, post-natal exercise, stress and depression, yoga, Pilates and time management.

Our Parental Rewards Package also provides families with exclusive discounts at local retailers and leisure attractions, aiding you to provide your family with that active and healthy Rookies lifestyle.

What is EYFS?The EYFS is a stage of children’s development from birth to the end of their first (Reception) year in school.

The EYFS Framework describes how early years practitioners should work with children and their families to support their development and learning.

It describes how your child should be kept safe and cared for and how all concerned can make sure that your child achieves the most they can in their earliest years of life.

EYFS is Based On Four Principles:Theme: A Unique Child

Principle: Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confi-dent and self-assured.

Theme: Positive Relationships Principle: Children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person.

Theme: Enabling Environments

Principle: The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning.

Theme: Learning and Development

Principle: Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and all areas of Learning and Development are equally important and interconnected.

ParentsEYFS is a very important stage as it helps your child get ready for school as well as preparing them for their future learning and successes. From when your child is born up until the age of 5, their early years’ experience should be happy, active, exciting, fun and secure: and support their development, care and learning needs. Parents and carers are their children’s first teachers. When they are with you learning can happen at any time and anywhere. It is important to remember that you know more about your own child than anyone else. Practitioners should be asking you about your child and sharing information with you about your child’s progress. The part you play in their learning and the choices you make will make a difference to their future.

7 Areas for Learning and Development:Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development of which they should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first:

• Communication and language;• Physical development; and• Personal, social and emotional development

These prime areas are the most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning. As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. There are:

• Literacy;• Mathematics;• Understating the world; and• Expressive arts and design

EYFSAt Rookies we deliver an EYFS Curriculum like most nurseries however, we carefully plan activities around being healthy and active and provide children with added opportunities to enjoy an active lifestyle.

Our PartnersStevenage Football Club Rookies is exceptionally lucky to be supported by its local professional football club, with Rookies being situated at the club’s state of the art Academy. This unique relationship with the football club means that not only do children benefit from unlimited access to the club’s 3G pitches, but also delivery of sports sessions by the club’s community coaches and support in our nutrition plans from the club’s sports science and nutrition team. Children and their parents also receive free tickets for selected matches, as well as discounted coaching courses.

Hertfordshire Children’s Centre Rookies works in partnership with its local Hertfordshire Children’s Centre which provides a range of services that support parents and carers to give their child the best start in life. They work with many partners including health visitors, midwives, schools, pre-schools, childcare providers and community groups to provide access to universal early years services.

Willow Foundation We are proud to support Hertfordshire based charity the Willow Foundation who are our chosen Rookies Charity of the Year. Each year we ask parents and staff to vote for our Charity of the Year, who we help to support through a calendar of creative child and parent fundraising initiatives. Willow is the only national charity working with seriously ill young adults aged 16 to 40 to fulfil uplifting and unforgettable Special Days. These Special Days enable them and their families to reconnect and refocus on each other while enjoying an activity of their choosing. A day for them, a day about them and a day that will create memories they will all treasure forever.

Since 1999 Willow has fulfilled more than 11,000 Special Days for young adults living with life-threatening conditions such as cancer, motor neurone disease, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and Huntington’s disease.

Football Gambia Nursery Rookies is proud to be twinned with Football Gambia Nursery in Cheesay which it acts as a parent nursery to, providing advice, training and second hand resources to support the running and development. Each year Rookies runs a themed week based around the nursery and encourages children to carry out activities which can then be shared with the African children when Rookies staff visit on an annual basis.
