Why I’m voting . . .

. . . because a judge will be elected to the NC Supreme Court this year and I want someone who cares about equal rights for all! - Becky Carver . . . because too many of my ancestors died for me not to be using my right to vote! - Kristen Marion . . . because the ID law blocked me from vo ng in the 2016 primary, and now there’s an amendment on the ballot to bring it back. No! - Janice Franklin . . . because I see vo ng isn’t just about who goes to the White House. Who goes to Raleigh affects my college tui on! - Aus n Padilla

District Courts handle misdemeanors, juvenile and family disputes, and civil litigation involving less than $25,000. The judge decides cases. Superior Courts

handle criminal cases and larger civil disputes; juries hear some cases.

Two other seats are contested (see below). Because the Legislature canceled the primary for this office, candidates from the same party may face each other.

What are some steps you would take to keep incarcer-ated individuals safe and connected to family members and the community? Create clear policies and proce-dures which will at least meet and in some instances exceed state and federal guidelines of a deten on

facility. Implemen ng rehabilita ve/re-entry programs will provide a be er quality of life, safer jails, and reduce recidivism.

Should NC ci es and coun es have the ability to estab-lish community/civilian oversight boards with subpoe-na power? No, but providing opportuni es for ci zen involvement can increase transparency and trust.

What policies do you support to help minimize racial bias in stops and searches (for example, mandatory consent-to-search or using data to flag high-disparity officer)? Con nued training for all officers on diversity and legal considera ons in dealing with ci zens.

Occupa on: Member of Congress

Hudson did not respond to ques ons for this Guide, but his website features his top policy issues and values; for example:

Allow individuals with a permit to carry a concealed weapon in one state to “conceal carry” in another state without going through that state’s permi ng process.

Provide the military and na onal security agencies with all the resources they need to defeat Islamic extremists.

What are your top 2 priori es for ac on in Congress? Several issues are important, especially expanding broad-band internet to rural areas to be er serve our schools and small businesses, and allowing Medicare to nego ate with drug companies to reduce prescrip on drug costs.

What will you do to make college affordable? I think it’s important to follow the lead of several other states and make community college free, especially for working students and students who don’t necessarily want to go to a four year university.

What specific ac ons do you support to address school shoo ngs? I do not support arming teachers. I do think it’s past me to ban assault-style weapons to protect our students and our society as a whole.

What’s needed for federal immigra on policy? We need to figure out a pathway to ci zenship for DACA recipients. We also need to invest in a stronger border and take concrete steps to be tough on irregular immigra on.

Should government take ac on to raise the minimum wage and promote pay equity across race and gender for the same job? The government should take ac on to make low-wage jobs equitable and affordable.

Should review of changes to NC elec on law be restored under a new Vo ng Rights Act? Yes, because elec on laws enacted by the NC legislature are blatantly racist.

But you automa cally get your right to vote back in North Carolina a er you finish your sentence, including proba on or parole. It doesn’t ma er where the felony convic on occurred, in this state or elsewhere.

No court document is needed to “restore” your right to vote. Just finish your sentence and register like any other ci zen. Failure to pay res tu on does not block your right to vote, unless you are s ll on proba on.

Encourage people who have finished a felony sentence to register and vote!

race and gender for the same job – or should these be le to businesses? The state should play a role in en-couraging businesses to pay every North Carolina worker a living wage; allowing affordable housing, childcare, and healthcare on 40 hours a week schedule.

What is the best way to handle the redistric ng process a er the 2020 Census? I support legisla ve efforts to establish a nonpar san board or commission to draw district boundaries. Districts should be compact, con gu-ous, preserve communi es of interest; ignoring par san, racial, or incumbency biases.

What are 2 priority ac ons for the state to improve K-12 public educa on? Pay our teachers a compe ve

salary and incen vize their con nued growth and development. I would support a bond referendum to build new school facili es.

Should NC municipali es have the authority to create police-community review boards with subpoena, inves ga ve and disciplinary powers? Yes, I believe communi es should be empowered to address prob-lems locally and design community-based solu ons.

Explain your posi on on off-shore drilling for North Carolina: I am opposed to off-shore drilling as both an environmental and economic threat.

Party: Libertarian

Experience: I have 20 years of experience as a Libertarian ac vist here in Cabarrus and across the country.

Occupa on: Electrician

Favorite endorsements: none submi ed

What are your top 2 or 3 priori es for ac on on the Commission? My top priority is to protect the life, liberty and justly acquired property of our ci zens. Second, I want to help Cabarrus prepare for cannabis/hemp legaliza on. Protec ng medical marijuana pa-

ents and care givers from state/federal officials is my mission.

What policies should the county pursue to improve the affordability of housing? The county should remove any obstacles that hinder " ny houses" and other innova ve low cost housing op ons. Zoning ordinances should never limit the ability for someone to provide safe shelter for themselves.

What policies should be pursued to promote job development and equal employment opportuni es? Cabarrus County should treat all businesses equally. To this end, I oppose all corporate welfare to the favored few. If we have the lowest tax burden in the region, investment and job crea on will grow naturally.

What is your stance on the county’s current or future collabora on with federal immigra on enforcement? The county should only collaborate when life, liberty or property is threatened or the accused has been charged with a violent crime. We can have security without sacrificing freedoms.

How will you ensure community transparency and accountability for the Sheriff's Department? I will work closely with our local law enforcement agencies in Cabarrus to ensure that the Bill of Rights are defended above all else. I will push for more ci zen involvement and oversight.

What policies should be pursued to promote job devel-opment and equal employment opportuni es? Cur-rently, in Cabarrus County, the local Community College is doing a good job of offering work development clas-ses for residents to take to enhance their job skills.

What is your stance on the county’s current or future collabora on with federal immigra on enforcement? As a county, we must follow the federal laws that are given to us to follow.

How will you ensure community transparency and accountability for the Sheriff's Department? We must con nue to provide the county sheriff’s office the resources for them to do the job. This includes to give the sheriff the funds to provide adequate staff and equipment to do the job.
