Introduction to ReMa Specializations In this document we explain the logic and practicalities of the Research Master Spatial Sciences Specializations (ReMa Specializations).
The research master is a master program that aims to offer a thorough research training with large thematic freedom to research-minded FSS students and human geography, regional development and spatial planning students from other universities. The Research Master Spatial Sciences program is a two-year program. Students can choose 5 or 6 thematic courses from any of the other one-year master programs. They also choose 3 methodological courses from a list; a list which crosses several programs but should include at least a broad mix of methods (a mix approved by the ReMa coordinator; see Appendix 1) for the list and examples of broad mixes). In principle students can, if they wish, choose all the courses from a specific one-year FSS program and do a Master thesis supervised from within that same master program too. However, up until 2019 students who did so, received no formal recognition of that specialization. Starting 2019-2020, the ReMa formally offers this ReMa Specialization option (see Appendix 3). The Faculty of Spatial Sciences has the following English one-year master programs (+ tracks) and program coordinators (see table 1 below).

The ReMa structure Below we show the structure of the Research Master program. All ReMa courses are In orange or light orange. We will first briefly explain the content of year one. The research part in year 1 starts with two courses: a Joint Multidisciplinary Research Project and the course Scientific Reading Debating and Reflecting in 1a and 1b (both 5 EC). In 1b the Individual Research Training starts and at the end of the first year students perform a Research Internship at a renowned research institute. This internship can be either 10 or 15 EC; in the latter case students take 5 instead of 6 thematic courses.
In year two of the ReMa program students take the course Scientific English Writing and the final ReMa dedicated methodological course Advanced Research Methods in 1a. This is followed the course Research Process and Proposal Writing. Finally they do a 30EC Master thesis.

Both in year one and year two (in 1a-2a) all students join in monthly sessions of Scientific Reading Debating and Reflecting, in which famous books are read and reflected upon and the scientific diaries that students keep are discussed.
Courses from other master programs
Under the heading ‘Advanced & Specialized Methods students throughout the two year program choose 3 methodological courses from the other one-year programs. There is a list of FSS courses from which to choose from (see appendix 1). Their combined choice should be a broad mix of methodological courses.
Under the heading ‘Thematic Theoretical Specialization’ students throughout the two year program choose 6 (or 5 if they choose a 15 EC internship) courses from other one-year programs.
Master thesis For the master thesis (30EC) ReMa students in the regular program are free to choose a supervisor (provided s/he is related to URSI) and free to develop a research in any subject within Spatial Sciences. If

the master thesis is performed as part of the ReMa Specialization then the supervisor and the subject have to be related to the specialization.
The ReMa + CG/EG/RES/PS/SSP/EIP specialisations In the table below we show the ECs of the different programs and the extent to which they are mandatory. For some programs there’s a choice option from a small set of predefined courses; making them ‘half mandatory’. The idea of the ReMa specialization is that students take at least as many ECs from the specialization as other non-ReMa students do. Since ReMa students perform a 30 EC master thesis (10EC more than non-ReMa students) they can take less courses to reach the same overall amount of ECs. This implies that there is some choice involved which courses to take and which not. The end-responsibility for giving to consent to the portfolio of courses under a ReMa Specialization lies with the one-year program coordinator of that particular specialization.
Joint formal responsibility Acquiring a formal ReMa Specialization within the ReMa program is a joint responsibility of the Research Master coordinator and the other relevant master program coordinator. Every year the options for combining the one-year master with the two-year ReMa are sketched to aspiring students. At the end of their ReMa study they receive a formal recognition of the relevant one-year master coordinator for their courses.
One annex for every specialization To help making choices for both students and coordinators for every one-year program at the end of this document we present an annex which shows: 1) the regular one-year program, 2) the ReMa program, 3) the default, consensual version of every ReMa specialization program. This default consensual program has been agreed upon by both coordinators. 4) some relevant remarks per program
