An Immense and Varied Stock GrandDisplay of Art and Holiday Goods. The most conspicuous object in to-

day's issue i3 the large advertisementof the Pacific Hardware Company thegreatest trade announcement of theseason. It is unnecessary to recapitulatethe different lines of merchandise thereinmentioned in this notice; but (pendingthe arrival of well-selecte- d paintings, when a fuller description of that depart-ment will be given), attention may beespecially called to the large hall on thesecond floor devoted to art goods. Thisis worth anybody's while to visit, simplyas an exhibition of beautiful things, suchas one would travel far to see equalled.Crystal, porcelain, pottery, silver, bronze, gilt, varied and variegated ware of everykind ; articles in unnumbered varietyof utility and ornamentation ; rich fur-nishings of solid worth and entrancingbeauty it would be useless to begincataloguing. Go and see for yourself, isthe best word about the display foreverybody. Attention is also directed toa separate advertisement of the Spring-field Roadster Bicycle, the special meritsof wrhich have formerly been noted inthis paper, a means of locomotion whosepossessor no corner in the feed marketcan terrifv.

THE DAILYWE HAVE RECENTLY RECEIVED LARGE ADDITIONS TO OUR

stock or merchandise!

Accommodations at Waimea.Mr. Editor : Waimea has wreathed

herself in smiles to welcome "the mostsensible, most intelligent jurors that(counsel informs us) have ever assem-bled to give me a verdict in this Court."

No rain, light breezes, and enoughplover to reward learned counsel for theirpleasant tramps with dog and gun.

A general hilarity of demeanor, and aleisurely discharge of more or less un-

pleasant duty are decidedly the orders of

the day or days or even weeks. Thejurors, however, have this much to bethankful for that through the kindnessaid forethought of Mr. E. G. Hitchcoek, the miseries of a Waimea sojourn arethings of the past. A double panel hasbeen well housed and fed in a placewhere, formerly, half that number ofmen were subjected to the horrors of KoKee's hospitality by day, and to the un-certain chances of anything bettgr thanthe bare floor by night. Mr. Hitchcockwill have the satisfaction of knowingthat he has earned the gratitude oftwenty-fou- r " good men and true, " andthat when, after we return to our happyhomes in December, we look back uponWaimea, our latest reminiscences of thatcharming spot will be rather pleasantthan otherwise.

Misreported Surely. An otherwise accurate description of

conditions of life in Honolulu and theIslands, given as the result of an inter-view with Rev. John W. Sellwoodwhose own and wife's agreeableand edifying presence was recentlyenjoyed here for some months inthe VV'eekly (Portland) Oregonian ofOctober 19th contains the followingpicturesque paragraph, for which doubt-less the reporter has received a richlydeserved "wigging" from our clericalvisitor, whose impressions are surelymixed up in this particular in transmit-sio- n

through the journalistic medium :

"The drive from the city to Pali, abeautiful little suburb, is the mostcharming and picturesque imaginable. From Pali a splendid view is obtained ofthe surrounding country for miles inall directions. The towering volcano ofKilauea here is in plain view, and amost imposing sight it is. The volcanonow is in a state of constant activity, and there is no more fascinating diver-sion for a stranger than to sit down insome comfortable little retreat andwatch the smoke belch forth from out ofits yawning crater."

A novel method of driving machineryby ammonia vapor, which it is claimed Our Prices are Moderate !

The plan just adopted by the Board of

Education, and announced in the official

column of the Advertiser one day lastweek, whereby the use of the Govern-

ment schoolhouses is to be granted to

the ministers of the various religious de-

nominations for the purpose of impart-

ing religious instruction to the young, does not strike us as favorably as it doessome others. The concession does notseem, on its face, to be a very importantone, and it is possible that it may notlead to any unpleasant complications, though of this latter we are not at allsure. It seems to us, nevertheless, aetep decidedly in the wrong direction. Itis the thin edge of a wedge, which thosewho have urged its introduction will lose

no opportunity of driving home until, could they accomplish what they evi-

dently desire, the school system of thecountry would be split into fragments, upon strictly sectarian lines. We haveread the circular referred to, severaltimes, very carefully, in hopes of findingsome logical connection or consistencybetween its first and last portions. Oursearch has been in vain. If there is any-

thing in the premises which justifies, oreven suggests the conclusion, we havebeen entirely unable to discover it. Theprovision of law which provides that "noperson in holy orders or minister of reli-

gion shall be eligible to fill the office of

President of the Board of Education orof Inspector General" is first given, with the additional statement that it isthe "evident intention" of the law thatthe schools shall be strictly secular. The language of the same statute is fur-

ther quoted as follows : "The object of

common schools, supported by Govern-ment, is to instruct the children of thenation in good morals, etc.," and a longcatalogue is then given of the variousduties included under the general headof "good morals," such as honesty, truthfulness, charity, obedience to par-

ents and teachers, kindness, chastity, etc. Having stated these facts, and laiddown these premises, the Board pro-

ceeds to announce a conclusion whichfurnishes as fine a specimen of what thelogicians call a "non sequiter" as wehave seen for a long time. The circularproceeds as follows: "You will fromthis time forth open school every morn-ing by reciting the Lord's Prayer inunison." This, it will be observed, isnot a permission, or even a recommend-ation, but a positive and unconditionalorder. . The schools, not may, but shall

Mr. Editor: I see by the returns ofyour sham or straw election, that theprohibition vote was seven. That wasmore than I expected in Honolulu, themammoth rum hole of the nation. I knewof only two there, excepting ladies. Ofcourse I knew that . there were a greatmany temperance people there of theliberal " selfish order " of temperance.Selfish order ? Yes, they believe in keep-ing away from the devil, them andtheirs, and let all others do the same ifthey can ; but the doctrine of the pro-hibitionists is not only to keep awayfrom the devil themselves, but to keepthe devil out of home and out of every-body else's home, by binding him witha strong chain of law statutes and con-

stitutional amendments thus workingto protect others as well as themselves. So let me say to my brother and sisterprohibitionists through the Gazette, thatinasmuch as ours is a party formed forthe redemption of man from the drinkcurse and never expects to give up anypart of the temperance ship, as long as afactory can be found that manufacturesdrunk drinks, or a saloon found to sellthem, not in fact until this moral reformencircles the earth . And as organizationis life, we must organize for the conflictas soon as convenient and agitate for" God and home and native land."United we can make our power felt andour principles known among men, al-though we are only eight in number.

The devil we are fighting is entrenchedbehind the law and all moral suasion ispowerless to oust him as long as highand low license laws and other legal per-mits are granted him as a protectionagainst the assaults of temperance. Li-cense means continuance and Govern-ment.protectio- n.

This fact is amply de-monstrated by the late decision of JudgeDole. The supposed right of the minis-ter to curb this rum devil at will amountsto nothing as long as he is permitted toccupy this law fort. It is our business

to oust him ; this conflict must go on un-til he is. The temperance element isnumerous enough now in this Kingdomto oust him if they were only united.

Moral suasion is good but pow-erless. Legal suasion is both goodand powerful. So organize and agitate, hoist the white flag, aim high. You arenow occupying the top round of thetemperance ladder and can clearly viewthe situation which other temperancepeople who occupy the lower part of theladder cannot do. They are not highenough to look into the enemy's quar-ters, though equally honest with our-selves in their, beliefs. But if not con-verted to prohibition they will continueto help make license and other lawsostensibly to "restrict the evil,"

"The Roval Baking Powder is absolutely pure, for I have so found it in many testa made bothfor that company and the United States Govern-ment.
