Our President’s LetterOur President’s Letter......

He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. 1Thess 5:24

Dear friends, Ask any teacher or trainer and they will say how important it is for sessions to have a good beginning and a good ending. When parenting

groups run out of time and we don't allow parents time to reflect on what we've discussed and make specific plans of what to try in the week, those sessions have always been less beneficial. It takes effort to timetable it in but it's always well worth it.

As I reach the end of my term of office as Diocesan President, I have been reflecting on how we have developed as Mothers' Union. Personally I have enjoyed meeting so many members and encouraging branches and projects. I am pleased that LinkUp is available to all members, that there are some more informal groups meeting, more Parenting facilitators have been trained and our first group of Loving for Life facilitators have been trained. We have engaged with campaigns such as Bye Buy childhood, AFIA, the Contact Centre, Prison ministry and our knitting and sewing projects are all progressing.

The highlight must have been hosting the General Meeting which involved so many members in various capacities and raised the profile of Mothers' Union in the Diocese and county.

I could not have done anything without the support of my Trustees, Officers, all who serve on various committees and every single member. You have walked with me through personal and family celebrations and bereavements and I am so grateful to you all.

When I was first challenged to pray about standing for Diocesan President, I felt a real call from God and I have often claimed the promise in our verse, 'He who called you is faithful' as I could not have faced many of the challenges in my own strength. I'm sure many will have had the same experiences.

It seems appropriate at this point to thank Lucille for all she has brought to MU as Diocesan President. She has been a hardworking and inspiring president, and many of us have appreciated her wisdom and enjoyed her company. We know we speak for many others too when we say how her support in personal difficulties has been valued. She has supported branches, and also those who take part in MU in newer ways. We learnt a lot from her visit to Tanzania, and the fabulous General Meeting, and look forward to continuing to benefit from her work with Parenting and Worldwide links in the MU.

Words from Mother Julian of NorwichWords from Mother Julian of Norwich “Truth sees God, and wisdom contemplates God, and from these two comes a third, a holy and wonderful delight in God, who is love.”

Please pray for:Please pray for:-- Mothers’ Union Members or their families who are ill Those who are going through difficult times All Christians who are being persecuted for their faith All those who are caught up in conflict

As we face the future, I am delighted that Pat Brewin will be President and I look forward to giving her, and all the continuing and new officers, my whole-hearted support.

Next year our theme will be 'A Celebration of Faith'. Mothers' Union will be 140 years old. I know we know how to celebrate as I have attended lots of branch anniversary celebrations with amazing cakes, teas etc so let's be creative and party next year! Let's show the world we want to see healthy relationships, strong families and thriving children all underpinned by faith in Jesus Christ.

In the mean time, may you all have a truly blessed Christmas as we celebrate the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

With love and prayers, Lucille Porter

We enjoyed the talk and his sense of humour enormously. Our December meeting will be an Adventivity when we worship and eat together. All welcome. We will also have a short talk by David Bean from the Street Pastors - he is a good speaker. In December we are celebrating Advent/Christmas with prose prayers etc from the Deaneries and a Faith Lunch. I have really enjoyed being your VP, now it's family time and we look forward to the next Triennium with Helen Catchpole at the helm. Thank you for your support. Greasley Branch Greasley Branch was opened on 15th September 1975 and celebrated their 40th Anniversary on 21st September. We were pleased to welcome our President, Lucille Porter, and thanked her for coming. Lucille spoke to us about her time as President and the uplift we all received at the General Meeting. Lucille presented some of our members with Long Service Certificates. We were thrilled that Dorothy Banton, one of two surviving original members, was able to join us to receive her 40 year certificate. Lucille also presented certificates for 25 years to Hilda Hill and Christine Ryde, and one for 10 years to our Branch Leader, Doreen Lockett. Margaret Salinger, our other original member, was too unwell to attend, but she received a slice of our birthday cake. Doreen and our previous Branch Leader, Eileen Exley, went to see Margaret later in the week to present her with her Certificate and take our good wishes. We shared tea and a wonderful birthday cake. This was made for us by Sylvia Brotherhood, a MU friend from our nearest Branch, Three Crosses Group. Thank you Sylvia. Your cake helped to make the afternoon special. Sue Pinkney

Mid Day Prayers Mid Day Prayers Every Monday to Friday prayers are said

at Noon in the chapel of Mary Sumner House in Westminster, London. These are open to all, whether staff or visitors. Do join us when visiting the city. Many members worldwide pray at noon in local time using the prayers which you can find on the following link:- www.mothersunion.org/get-involved/pray-worship/wave-prayer

Thank you for the world so sweet Thank you for the food we eat

Thank you for the birds that sing Thank you, God, for everything.

In my small village school in Cornwall, many years ago, we used these words of praise and thanks to God every day and they are still appropriate today. We have much to be thankful for. As the season of Autumn, with its misty mornings, ripe fruits and Harvest celebrations, is left behind, we begin to look forward to Advent and Christmas. The birds are not the only singers giving us pleasure. Those of us who belong to music groups and choirs open our books of Advent hymns and carols and joyfully lift our voices in praise to God for the greatest gift of all, His Son Jesus Christ. Our lives may be busy and Christmases seem to come more quickly as we grow older but let us appreciate all God's gifts to us especially at this time of the year. As we listen to music or join in the singing of familiar hymns we will be continuing the rejoicing of Christians down the ages.

As it says in Psalm 134 "Praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord" and

"May the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth, bless you." Psalm 98 says

"Sing to the Lord a new song for He has done marvellous things." and

"Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music."

Angela Stevens (Faith and Policy)

Worldwide Council October 2015Worldwide Council October 2015 Attended by Lucille Porter, Pat Brewin and Pauline Wainwright.

For Lucille and me it was our last Worldwide Council and for Pat her first. There were no workshops to report on, as the focus was very much on discussing MU membership of the UK, which is slowly declining.

Oh dear, was this going to be a depressing end to my three

wonderful years as a Province of York Representative Member?

Far from it. Our Worldwide President, Lynne Tembey was as ebullient as ever, full of faith in God and the future of the Mothers’ Union, which she always describes as our wonderful, life-changing organisation. Bishop Andrew Proud, our Central Chaplain, encouraged us to put the past into perspective, not to dwell there and put our trust in God. To keep God at the centre and remember whose we are. We were reminded that we are all in it together, aiming to share God’s love.

We met Bev Jullien our new Chief Executive officer (killer heels, smart suit, beautiful smile, latest in a long line of MU members) and were further inspired by her comments. She was excited by the prospect of helping the MU to move on, become better known and attract new members and supporters. We learned that she and Lynne had, in Lynne’s words, “The most wonderful experience in the crypt,” when they met with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who spoke to them of the potential of the MU ‘on the ground’ to be a positive force in

working towards peace and reconciliation.

Thursday was spent in discussion groups about membership. This resulted in a large amount of data, comments, ideas and suggestions being collected. This was to be collated and acted upon by the departments at Mary Sumner House. I haven’t room here to include all the ideas shared throughout the 3 days. There was no quick fix solution but, for me the most significant statement that emerged was that we should not continue to try to fit people into existing structures but create the structures to fit the people. Together we can ensure that our “Wonderful and life changing organisation continues into the future” Pauline Wainwright

On 26th September, at Oxton, and the Mothers' Union was present alongside the Diocesan

caravan, with our baby changing facility.

Mary Davey, Tessa Rolph, Sylvia Brooks and I were there to encourage parents to pop into the tent to change their little ones and chat to them about the Mothers' Union.

We provided toys, puzzles and colouring sheets to attract siblings too. We were very pleased that 14 parents used the facility and many more stopped to talk.

Bishop Paul and his wife Sarah enjoyed their visit!

It was a great day out that I would recommend.

Next year it will be taking place at Farnsfield. See you there! Maureen Rodgers Gedling Deanery Leader

Hello from your new Training OfficerHello from your new Training Officer From the name at the bottom, you can see that I am actually a recycled Representative Member and Branch Leader. We have an enthusiastic, well-informed bunch of speakers in our diocese, who are itching to come and share with all of you about our Mothers’ Union, as well as give interesting talks on their other special interests.

I know that when this LinkUp is published, you will already have sorted your programme and I hope you have fully embraced this year’s theme of a Celebration of Faith and are doing something to mark 140 years of the Mothers’ Union. What follows is a piece of advanced publicity about an event on September 20th to be held at Jubilee House, Southwell. I am calling it The Speakers’ Market Place and it will be open to everyone in the diocese. There will be a chance to meet speakers, find out what talks are on offer, pick up resources for next year’s theme, share with each other ideas for meetings, projects and using the website. Pick up some goodies from MUe. Bring your programme dates and book your speakers there and then. The event will run from 10.00am until 1pm with drinks available. Why not make a day of it, hire a charabanc, bring a picnic, visit the Minster or Southwell Workhouse. More details to follow as we come up with more ideas and if you have any for what else we can offer in September do send me an email, give me a ring or write to me. I would love to hear from you. MUeMUe We made some good sales at both Archdeaconry Days, and delivered several orders. Thank you to those who helped on the stalls and those who bought our goods. Janet Davies and Sue took some literature and Mothers’ Union Resources to the Diocesan Clergy Conference at Swanwick on October 13th. We didn’t sell too much, but we were there as ‘The Presence of Mothers’ Union’. Several vicars chatted to us, so we achieved what we wanted to.

We have been bringing the Cookbooks to various events this year. We still have a lot left. Many people haven’t seen them yet. We would like to try and sell more now. Perhaps you could buy one as a raffle prize for your Church or other organisation. They make excellent stocking fillers, and are suitable for students, and as engagement or wedding gifts.

We have sold all the diaries, but will order a few more to sell at the December Archdeaconry Days.

I am pleased to say that Shirley Dawe from Mansfield St. John & St Mary has agreed to become another Rep to cover the Mansfield area. Thank You Shirley.

We could still do with another Rep. for the Newark Archdeaconry and at least one for the Nottingham Archdeaconry, particularly to cover Gedling/Arnold areas, or Bingham - and if you were able to attend the Archdeaconry Days that would be even better. Please contact Sue or Lucille for further information.

Social Policy UpdateSocial Policy Update

The Government has announced new measures to keep children safer from inappropriate online content, through the introduction of age ratings for online music videos. The new rules bring an end to a disparity in the way many online and offline music videos are treated. In addition the Government has stated that it is working with digital service providers to introduce stricter age verification for those seeking to access age rated music videos online.

I hope some of you have taken part in the "16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence" running from November 15th to December 10th. MU is involved again this year, see MU website. Participants aim to raise awareness of violence against women and girls throughout this time.

Relate, Marriage Law and Relationships Scotland, in conjunction with YouGov, have published research, looking into the current state of relationships within the UK. "The way we are now" looks at the relationships of adults, with friends, family, partners, children and others, and shows some encouraging findings suggesting that most people enjoy positive interpersonal relationships.

MU Bye Buy Childhood Christmas postcards are ideal for handing out to friends, family, at church and events, and are designed to support parents in navigating the commercial world around Christmas. The cards also include some great ideas for non consumer based Christmas activities. Please contact Brenda Molloy on 0207 222 5533 to order. Postage costs may apply to larger orders.

The Department for Works and Pensions has announced the launch of a pilot scheme in 12 local authorities, with the aim of providing relationship support to parents in a bid to help them stay together. The scheme will allow local authorities flexibility in the type of support they provide.

End of Triennium Saturday 31End of Triennium Saturday 31st st October 2015October 2015

We were pleased to welcome Barbara Taylor, our Provincial President, to our Triennial Service at

Southwell Minster on 31st October. The Acting Dean, Canon Nigel Coates, welcomed us all and the Southwell Churches Together Choir, led by Gwen Bragg sang the Introit based on the prayer of St. Richard. The Provincial, Diocesan, Deanery and Branch banners were processed through the nave during the singing of the first hymn.

After our Newark Archdeaconry Chaplain, Rev. Pat Chapman had led us in prayer Barbara Taylor and Lucille Porter reflected on the past 3 years. Barbara told us how much she enjoyed visiting dioceses in the York Province and meeting members. She also told us about her work as a Central Trustee. She said there were almost 30 applications for the post of Chief Executive Officer to replace Reg Bailey. Bev Jullien was appointed and she has now been in post for 13 weeks. Lucille felt that the highlight of the past 3 years was Hosting the General Meeting in Nottingham. Other highlights were her visit to one of our Link Dioceses in Tanzania which gave her an insight into the worldwide work of MU; and the marriage preparation course, Living for Life, which was led by Marion Pope from MSH and the group included 4 clergy. Lucille also said that LinkUp is now issued quarterly and every member receives a copy.

The lessons were read by Lucille Porter (Psalm 1) and Pat Brewin, the incoming Diocesan President (Luke 19), and the choir sang the anthem 'Look at the world' by John Rutter.

Bishop Tony based his sermon on the second lesson, the story of Zacchaeus, and introduced us to Tania who gave a testimony of how she had had a difficult childhood and a life of drug addiction, prostitution and even considered suicide, but a leaflet given to her at a Blackpool Christian Mission brought her to Nottingham where she found people willing to help and support her. She has now been happily married for 5 years. She ended by reading her favourite psalm - Psalm 116.

Bishop Tony brought this time of reflection to a close by reiterating the verse he had based his sermon on:

Today salvation has come to this house.

He reminded us that Jesus was always busy but never too busy for people; he mixed with people outside the bubble and he called people to put their faith in God.

The intercesssions were led by David Mellors, Janet Clothier, Anne Hensby and Jen Gierth, and at the end of the service the banners were again carried around the nave for all to see.

We then made our way to Trebeck Hall, and during the lunch break we were able

to see a powerpoint presentation of photographs taken at the General Meeting in June.

Lucille welcomed everyone to the Triennial Meeting and asked us to read the Triennial Reports which highlighted our work over the past 3 years. She then invited several officers to talk their work and achievements. We saw examples of fiddle pinnies which some branches are making for dementia sufferers. We were encouraged to keep knitting teddies and other items for various organisations. Contributions can be brought to Archdeaconry Days and VP's will ensure they get to the right people. Helen Catchpole read some of the 'Thank you' letters she had received from people who had benefitted from an AFIA holiday. Pat Atkins told us about our new Overseas Link Dioceses, and Tessa Rolfe told us about the Contact Centre at Retford and appealed for more helpers. We were reminded of the work done by MU members in the crèche at Nottingham Prison and the teams who run Parenting Groups.

Olwen Kerswill brought us up-to-date on the Bye Buy Childhood Campaign and told us about the 16 Days of Activism (25th November - 10th December) reminding us there is plenty of information and resources on the MU website. Barbara Taylor recommended that we promote MU on Twitter and Facebook. The special 140th Anniversary logo is now available on the MU website and she encouraged us to use it on our programmes etc. Janet Clothier thanked Lucille for her leadership over the past 6 years and then everyone joined hands for the Grace. What a wonderful day we had had! Sheila Allton
