“For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And He gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.” -2 Corinthians 5:19

Dear Friends in Christ,

This Wednesday begins our annual Lenten Retreat, a time for conversion, transformation, and reconciliation. Each year the Church gives us this time to take a break from the ordinary routine and to reflect, recollect, and renew our lives as His sons and daughters. At a time where division and sin can be seen all over the internet, the television, and really all over the world, we thought it would be appropriate to focus on reconciliation this Lent.

From the Gospel of John chapter 20, the Apostles were given the power and the mandate to forgive sins. This is one of the treasured gifts our Church has to offer, the chance to make things right with God through His minister, the priest. While it can be difficult to prepare and finally get the courage to take advantage of the Sacrament, we know the power of God’s Grace that flows and the immense weight that is lifted off of our shoulders through Confession. While it is a requirement that we go at least once a year or whenever we have serious sins, we should strive to look at the Sacrament as an opportunity rather than an obligation. Through His passion, Death, and Resurrection, forgiveness is readily available to us!

By now, our Lenten mailing has already gone out to all parishioners and I hope you’ve had the opportunity to review the many events scheduled, especially the added times for Reconciliation. Just as Jesus entered the desert for a special time of prayer and communion, we also have been given this special time for prayer, communion, and reconciliation. May the Lord bless this time, may it be spiritually fruitful for all of us, and may we all grow in holiness together this Lent! In Christ, Fr. Michael Pastor

Family life teaches us many things. It is often at home that we learn practical skills such as cooking, riding a bike, and making repairs. Talk about some of the things that the members of your family have learned to do at home. We also learn about caring at home. Talk about times when you have learned a lesson about sharing, forgiving, or loving through an experience that happened at home. Talk about how love is the most important thing a family can share with one another. Explain that it is the same in God’s family. Read aloud this Sunday’s Gospel, Matthew 5:38–48. Talk about how Jesus tried to teach his disciples how to love others beyond those who are closest to them. Jesus tells them to love even their enemies. As members of God’s family, we are called to do the same thing. Talk about some concrete ways you can “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”. Remind your children that Jesus does not expect us to be perfect. Jesus knows that we are human and will not always do everything correctly. Explain that what Jesus wants us to do is to love others as if they were Jesus himself. If we reach out in love to others, we are doing exactly what Jesus did. That is what perfection looks like. End this time together by praying the Act of Love.

O my God, I love you above all things with my whole heart and soul, because you are all good and worthy of all my love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of you. I forgive all who have injured

me and I ask pardon of those whom I have injured. Amen.

Margaret “Maggie” Ramirez has been married to her husband, Jose, since 1972. They have 3 children and 4 grandchildren. Maggie has been a long time member of St. Joseph’s and does a lot of behind the scenes work. She arrives early for the 1:00pm Mass to straighten up the hymnals and clean up any messes that might have been left in the pews. She takes great pride in making our church welcoming for everyone! In 2014, Maggie began leading the Rosary before the Spanish Mass and contin-ues leading this devotion today. She is a “behind the scenes” worker, helping secure the collection after Mass, helping with gatherings, making cookies, or getting food set so it’s ready when everyone arrives. She also helps lead the Rosary during the pro-cession to the church on the Feast Our Lady of Guadalupe. When you see Maggie, thank her for her years of service to our parish. Gracias, Margaret!
