West Michigan Market Overview
West Michigan is home to over 1.4 million people and encompasses the 7 counties of Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, Allegan, Ionia, Barry, and Newaygo. As the nation becomes more technologically advanced, the demand for highly skilled labor is becoming ever more prevalent. West Michigan, and the State as a whole, has responded to this demand by encouraging its educational institutions to provide new state of the art facilities, such as Grand Valley State University’s 40,000 square foot Michigan Alternative and Renewable Energy Center. They are also providing numerous tax incentives to businesses that work on the cutting edge of their industry, and are helping restructure small business tax to make the region the most viable option for business growth. As the West Michigan area expands in all facets of its economy, young professionals continue to be drawn to the area. Currently, over 50 percent of the population is under the age of 35, compared to the national average of 48 percent. Furthermore, the area provides a low cost of living and off ers a wide variety of entertainment venues and outdoor activities. Places Rated Almanac ranked the area number 3 in the fun and recreation category. Residents embrace every form of family entertainment, especially boating, sailing, fi shing, camping, skiing, and golfi ng.
