Auctioneer Fred Spurgeon:
The May Anniversary Show lived up to its
reputation of quality today with full shippons on
offer. Richard Shuttleworth was our judge today
and chose a heifer from J B Rowland as first prize
non-pedigree with Neil Edmondson in second
place.
The next class was pedigree heifer with nine
turned into the ring which provided more of a
challenge. The winner was W A Booth, Feizor
with Jeremy Taylor taking second place.
Six in-calf heifers from Derek Calvert were a
credit to him. They were in-calf to the
Limousin, well shown and well sold. Top call
came for the first prize heifer to John
Shuttleworth at £1640 with others at £1620,
£1500 and £1480 twice. A red and white in-
calf heifer from regular supporter John
Mawson went to Park House Holdings at
£1660.
There was a good atmosphere around the
ring today with a couple of new buyers looking for TB4 heifers. If you have any to
sell please come and have a look, we are here every week.
I have several groups of young stock on farm, please ring if you want to buy farm to
farm.

Auctioneer Fred Spurgeon:
Thanks for the support from our regular vendors and customers and what a great
trade for the May Cogent sale. Numbers are tight and confidence is growing with
silage making going well and milk prices looking promising. Today’s judge was
Richard Gorst from the Saltoke herd and the prices achieved for the pedigree heifers
reflect the challenge he was given.
The champion came from Richard Lucas,
Blackburn selling at £2,320 to an undisclosed
buyer from Shropshire. Next in line was Chris
Bargh selling at £2,240 to M Kenyon, Chipping
who went ton to claim seven other heifers.
P Knowles, Kendal had a 3rd prize heifer selling
at £2,200 to Frank Wrathall. The trade was
strong to the end of the sale with many buyers
going home with empty trailers. Young stock were good to sell with the younger
heifers seeing an incredible trade with 12month old pedigree stirks to £790.
NEXT WEEK we expect 30 regular milkers plus a dispersal of 35-40 cows at various
stages from Newhouse Bros, Stackhouse, Settle.

Great to be back open and a massive thank you to all our loyal customers, both
buyers and sellers for supporting us. Vendors were rewarded with a fantastic trade
from start to finish. Purchasers were rewarded with a superb entry of 328 quality
TB4 calves and stirks, not to be found anywhere else in the country!
Today, as planned we held our May Anniversary Show and Sale which was judged
by Roger Long, Norfolk. Pauline Anderton, Bamber Bridge succeeded in a rare
achievement, being awarded both the Champion and Reserve Rosettes with British
Blues both sired by Genus Moorsly Anderson. The Champion, a 6.week old bull
went on to sell for the top price of £575. The reserve, a heifer sold for the joint
top female price of £385. Other results from the show as follows:
90 of the total entry of calves were Blues. Top 16 bull prices: £575, £560, £525x3,
£515x2, £510x2, £505, £502, £500, £495, £492, £488 & £485. Top 16 heifer prices:
£385x2, £380x4, £375x2, £372, £362, £360, £355x2, £350 & £348. Other
continentals including Charolais, Limousin, Simmental and an odd Bazadaise were
also keenly fought for. There was plenty of demand for the Angus and Herefords.
Bulls generally either side of £300 to a high of £390 and heifers generally either side
of £200 to a high of £285. Black and white bulls were good to sell all day. In fact the
last calves through the ring were the trade of the day. An overall average of £128 for
all shapes, sizes and quality.
We held a ‘catch up’ stirk sale after the calves. It should have been the May
Anniversary Stirk Sale last week, but this has been moved now until next Thursday
24th May. Consequently, the smarter suckler bred types have re-booked for next
week. Today’s entry were nearly all dairy cross goods, generally about that 6
months of age and what a cracking trade they were to a packed ringside. Looking
forward to next week, we expect another similar sized entry. We have several young
cattle with show potential pre-entered and welcome further entries of all stirks prior to
Tuesday lunchtime.

Sheep Auctioneer Rachel Capstick: .Great to be back! A huge thank you to all our loyal customers. A good show of cast ewes this morning sold to a fast trade. Plenty continentals over £100 to a high of £130. Mules to £94. Lonks to £84. Swales to £66. Spring lambs were in demand selling to a high of £133.50 for Charollais from David Williams, Wales. More lambs needed every week going forward. As the hogg season draws to a close and Spring lamb numbers are still tight, there is no let-up in the demand. A very pleasing overall average for all weights and types of 242p/kg or £100.77. We moved up to the top ring to sell breeders bang on 11.30am. First into the ring were Alpine goats from C & M Crawshaw. Billy £115, nanny & single £120, Nanny & twins £200. There was plenty of choice of sheep with lambs at foot and a roaring trade for all types. From the smartest types presented by John Critchley – Beltex ewes with lambs £365, £350, £290, £280x2 & £262. Commercial Texel x ewes with twins to £245 from Greg Thompson, others generally £200 plus. Cheviot ewes with singles to £172 from Sally Sleightholme, York. Today we held our re-organised

Hogg and Lamb Show. First and second prize Mule Hoggs from Raymond Johnson, Felliscliffe both sold for £195. Walker & Alpe, Chipping collected the third place rosette and sold for £172. In the non-mule class, Mark Wilson’s, Selside Suffolk x Mule Hoggs won the first place and sold for £170. Walker & Alpes’ Texel x Mule Hoggs in second place made £168 and Carol and Michael Crawshaw, Trawden collected the yellow rosette with Herdwick x Texel Hoggs which sold for £110. We now look forward to next week which includes the annual production sale of sheep with exceptional show quality lambs from Anthony Thompson, Foulridge – details on website. We also have sheep dog pups and pigs again next week. It is

Auctioneer Fred Spurgeon:
Last week’s strong trade continued right from the start of today’s sale. First in the
ring was a Friesian type 28 litre heifer from GF Holt of Chipping which sold at £1,900.
Top price came for a smart heifer from Robin and Margaret Cowgill at £2,220 with 7
other heifers over the £2,000 mark from Jeremy Taylor, David Knowles, Duncan
Robinson and Andrew Jennings.
A strong good-framed 3rd lactation cow from Ed Towers (Love in the Countryside!)
sold at £1,900 to W Hesketh.
The predicted shortage of new calved cattle is beginning to happen with new faces
travelling long distance to find cattle.
NEXT WEEK is a regular weekly sale (31st May) with 20-30 expected.

Another busy sale of 284 calves and stirks all selling to a roaring
trade. Topping the calf market were Simmental bulls at £505 from
Richard Parsons, closely followed by Alec Simpson at £502. John
and Kate Bailey headed the Blue bulls at £500 followed by £495,
£480, £472 x2, £465, £455, £450, £435, £428, £420, £405, £395,
£395, £390, £388 & £375. Blue heifers were every bit as good to sell as last week.
John Asquith topped at £448. Next at £422 was a lovely sweet heifer from Ulverston
followed by £420, £388, £355, £352, £350 x2, £345, £340, £338, £318 x2, £312,
£310 & £305. More Limousins about today. Bulls to £490 (avg £366) and heifers
£375 (avg £316). No let-up in demand for the Herefords and Angus neither. If you
are being tempted to sell your dairy bulls privately, think again! Calf and after calf
above £100 all say to £292 and an overall average for all quality of £165 and yes we
still only charge 3% commission!!
Stirks followed and today we had our re-organised Anniversary Show. We had a mixture of smart suckler bred goods, dairy crosses and black & white bulls/steers
generally about that 6 months of age and all selling to a packed audience for a
remarkable trade. Topping the sale, but not eligible for the show was an
extreme Blue x Blonde Heifer from DM & RE Capstick at £980. Next
highest was the 1st prize male and Champion, a Blonde x steer from the same home
at £960. Also above £900 were Jim Harrison and Frankland Farms, both with
Limousin Heifers at £915 & £905 respectively. A super run of Angus x Steers
sold for £680. A batch of dairy x Blue heifers brought up from Sheffield sold nicely
indeed to £675. The black and white males also got away very well today.
Our increasingly popular stirk sales are back now fortnightly, the next sale being 7th
June. Give us a try and please ring the office 01200 441351 prior to Tuesday 5th
June with entries for advertising.
Stirk show results:

Remember too, this Saturday 26th May is our re-organised

Prime/ Store/ Breeding Sheep Auctioneer Rachel Capstick: On bank holiday weekend we were always going to be quieter in the far sheep ring, although the better Continental ewes could still top £100. A shortage of decent hoggs, today seemed more of a clear out sort of day. We need more spring lambs now going forward every Saturday morning. We moved up to the top ring to sell three sheepdog pups. The two dogs sold for £180 and £120 but, the bitch attracted a huge amount of attention – the hammer being knocked down at £580. Mule hoggs with singles topped at £188 from Raymond Johnson and Texels at £190 from Matthew Umpleby.
There was a proper mixture of ewes and lambs today. The highlight of which was the annual production sale of Beltex and cross bred ewes and shearlings with show
quality lambs from Anthony Thompson, Foulridge. Topping his sale was 3-crop ewe and single gimmer lamb at £610. Other single outfits from the same home £550, £440, £400, £380, £345, £330, £315, £310, £300, £295 selling locally and to buyers from Wales and Scotland.
Commercial types would be a shade easier today but, in fairness, the outfits on offer would not be the same quality as last week. REMEMBER, we are selling sheep and lambs every Saturday. Please ring the office by Tuesday lunchtime with entries.

Auctioneer Fred Spurgeon:
The May Anniversary Show lived up to its
reputation of quality today with full shippons on
offer. Richard Shuttleworth was our judge today
and chose a heifer from J B Rowland as first prize
non-pedigree with Neil Edmondson in second
place.
The next class was pedigree heifer with nine
turned into the ring which provided more of a
challenge. The winner was W A Booth, Feizor
with Jeremy Taylor taking second place.
Six in-calf heifers from Derek Calvert were a
credit to him. They were in-calf to the
Limousin, well shown and well sold. Top call
came for the first prize heifer to John
Shuttleworth at £1640 with others at £1620,
£1500 and £1480 twice. A red and white in-
calf heifer from regular supporter John
Mawson went to Park House Holdings at
£1660.
There was a good atmosphere around the
ring today with a couple of new buyers looking for TB4 heifers. If you have any to
sell please come and have a look, we are here every week.
I have several groups of young stock on farm, please ring if you want to buy farm to
farm.
