Cross Connection Control Program Keep Your Drinking Water Safe It’s Up to You Clean, safe drinking water. It’s something we take for granted, but every home, including yours, has potential hazards that can contaminate the drinking water. These hazards are called cross connections. If you know what they are, then you can keep your water safe. Did you know: most cross connections are created by hoses. 2. Leave at least a one-inch gapbetween the end of a tap and asource of contamination.

This eliminates the link to contaminants, preventing them from being siphoned up intoyour water supply.

3. Attach a hose connectionvacuum breaker to threaded taps.

This easy-to-install device preventscontaminated water from being siphonedthrough the hose. A vacuum breaker can befound at hardware and plumbing supplystores. Just remember to drain the vacuumbreaker before cold weather sets in, or else itwill freeze and break.

Here are some easy tips to help eliminate cross connections.

1. Never place the end of a hose where it can suckcontaminants into your drinking water.

If the water pressure drops while a tap is open (in any of the situations above),then contaminants could be sucked through the hose.

How you can protect yourdrinking waterWhat is a cross

connection?A cross connection is any linkbetween your water supply and apolluted or contaminated source. Some examples of this would be ahose attached to a pesticide spraybottle or leaving a hose in apaddling pool when filling it up.

Here’s thedangerIf a drop in water pressure occurs, the hose could act as a siphon, and suck contaminants back upinto your water supply. This makesthe water unsafe to drink and isdangerous for you, your family, and your neighbours.

Dangerous cross connections canbe prevented. But only you canprotect your drinking water fromcross contamination on yourproperty.
