GREATER CHICAGO/UPPER MIDWEST REGION YEAR END REVIEW

2016

Page 3: For more than 100 years, the Anti-Defamation ... - ADL ChicagoFor more than 100 years, the Anti-Defamation League has led the ght against racism, bigotry, intolerance and anti-Semitism.

Dear ADL Supporter,

When the Anti-Defamation League was founded right here in Chicago in 1913, our local leaders chose their words wisely: "To stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment for all.” Fast forward more than a century, and we find ourselves in a very different time, facing sadly similar challenges.

Twitter, Facebook, newspapers, billboards, and even the comment sections of the ADL website have been subject to recent anti-Semitic remarks and anti-Israel rhetoric. Social media may be a new outlet for this year’s negativity, including attacks against journalists, but the message is just as frightening as ever. We know that words matter, and that threatening speech too often leads to dangerous actions.

We live in unsettling times. We are witnesses to terror attacks around the world, the ongoing refugee crisis, and a rising Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. And ADL is there to speak out and speak up against anti-Semitism, bullying, bias, and hate. Our mission takes us from playgrounds to political rallies, from college campuses to the boardrooms of global corporations.

We work hard to ensure that our voice is heard in the fight for equality in marriage and the military, for religious freedoms, for voting rights, for immigration reform, and for hate crime laws. Our education programs in schools, synagogues, and overnight camps teach students about the power of words, while our investigative research team assists law enforcement in targeting extremists.

As you look through the following pages, we hope that you will feel proud of the work ADL has done this year, work made possible by your generous support.

ADL SPEAKS OUT

Fear of Refugees: Op-Ed by Regional Director Lonnie Nasatir

“The idea of tracking Americans or selectively accepting refugees on the basis of religion is not only inimical to our American values, it also wildly misses the worthy goal of establishing a rational balance between civil liberties and security measures.”

Crossing The Line: When Criticism of Israel Becomes Anti-Semitic “Let’s be clear. No government is immune from criticism. Surely neither the U.S. government nor the government of Israel nor any other. But when that criticism of Israel crosses the line into anti-Semitism, we will condemn it. ...Standing up for rights of disempowered people is a job for us all. ADL has been doing it for more than 100 years."

ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt Condemns Offensive Election Rhetoric

“As the general election campaign approaches, I hope that our fellow Jewish communal groups and civil rights organizations will join us in speaking out against intolerance and hate. We must not write this off as ‘politics as usual’ because it isn’t.”

Global Crises are Overshadowing Hate Crimes

"In the shadows of global crises, it’s a sad fact of everyday life that people around the world are routinely attacked, threatened or intimidated simply because of who they are or what they believe. ...While the problem of underreporting and incomplete hate crimes laws is not unique to Europe, and the U.S. faces its own challenges in extending fully inclusive hate crimes laws to all 50 states, for the sake of their citizens and societies, European governments should make good on their own commitments to combat hate crime."

WORDS TO ACTION

Jewish youth in the United States continue to experience anti-Semitism in the form of taunts, belittling jokes, harassment, and hateful graffiti in the halls and classrooms of their schools, neighborhoods, and communities.

In addition, over the past two academic years, approximately 1,000 anti-Israel events took place on university and college campuses in the U.S., many of which were organized by groups engaged in the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement that aims to delegitimize the State of Israel. In this time period, approximately 50 student governments or student bodies voted on BDS resolutions, and at least 77 anti-Israel events were sponsored by university departments or academic programs. Two significant upcoming anniversaries will likely prompt anti-Israel activity on campuses in 2017: the 50th anniversary of the Six-Day War and the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration.

In this context, it is imperative that ADL continues to have a voice in the young adult community. Words to Action is an interactive, facilitator-led education program designed to empower and equip individuals with constructive and effective responses to combat anti-Semitism and anti-Israel bias. Throughout the last year, our staff conducted Words to Action trainings at university campuses, overnight camps, day schools, and synagogues. The feedback has proven impactful, for as one student put it: “Anti-Semitism is not always something we can control, but we can take action to prevent it,” and another participant commented that since the program, they feel more prepared “to respond in a situation when facing anti-Semitism.”

"LEAC provides law enforcement leaders with a venue to confront and discuss the diverse challenges in domestic terrorism and hate crimes. As Committee Chairperson, I witnessed LEAC illustrate successful collaboration between public and private partnerships. Through this committee, ADL and law enforcement partners work to protect the lives and liberties of our fellow citizens. We build communities that stand united against crime and terrorism, and are committed to promoting and defending freedom. This is why law enforcement appreciates the ADL and why I value LEAC."

- Jeremy W. Francis Supervisory Special Agent,

Chicago FBI

■ LAW ENFORCEMENT

ADL offers law enforcement officers from Chicago and across the Upper Midwest an extensive list of local and national programs, including hate crimes trainings for police and citizens’ academies, the Advanced Training School in Washington, DC, which is designed for professionals assigned to intelligence, counter-terrorism, and homeland security units, and the National Counter-Terrorism Seminar (NCTS) in Israel. Chicago Police Department Superintendent Eddie Johnson, a recent NCTS graduate, was greatly impacted by his experience as well as the opportunity to return and implement ADL’s anti-bias training with members of the law enforcement community. Additionally, ADL’s Law Enforcement Advisory Committee (LEAC) meets regularly and provides officers with a platform to collaborate and strengthen their connection to ADL.

“There are so many highlights to NCTS in Israel. For police it’s great to interact with other law enforcement professionals. Networking is critical for us because in the United States, when one police department has a set of problems, other agencies have similar issues and it’s great to share best practices. It’s especially useful to learn how they’re handling tensions and issues very similar to what we have in the United States. It might be related to different groups, but the tensions and the realities of the Israeli police department and border police and our work are very similar, and some of the techniques that they’re using were ones that we might look into adopting in the future after considering the legal implications. We also brought some information and shared that with them.”

“I had the opportunity this past year to coordinate an A World of Difference® Institute Peer Leadership training for our student leaders. I now have access to ADL’s educational resources, table talks, and tools to better support our diverse school community. The comprehensive wrap around support provided by the education team was helpful in navigating some difficult conversations. I am grateful for their commitment to diversity education.”

-Megan Edgin, M.A., Former School Counselor,

Lenart Regional Gifted Center

ADL Chicago’s A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute is a resource for students, educators, and parents with on-site trainings that focus on important issues such as bullying, cyber-bullying, becoming an ally, confronting bias, and ultimately, how to create a culture of respect and inclusivity. A new Current Events Classroom series is now available online and offers timely topics ranging from ways to discuss the election cycle and gender wage gap to the refugee crisis in Europe.

As part of the ADL Chicago inaugural No Place for Hate® Campaign, students, educators, and parents will engage in Institute training and plan at least three school-wide activities that promote individual dignity and intergroup harmony. The Campaign culminates in an end of year celebration declaring the school No Place for Hate®.

A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute

Most recently, ADL conducted A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute programs at the following locations:

CAMPUS LEADERS MISSION TO ISRAEL

Our Campus Leaders Mission to Israel is a terrific opportunity for college students from all religions and backgrounds to experience Israel up close, in all its nuance and complexity. Qualified applicants must be college students who have not previously visited Israel and exemplify leadership on their college/university campus – such as political involvement, student activism, and publishing of campus newspapers. This year, ADL hosted students from schools across the country, including Loyola University Chicago, George Mason University, and Boston College.

"I still remember the emotions I felt exiting the plane at Ben Gurion Airport. Filled with excitement and anticipation, I was eager to learn first-hand the challenges faced by Israel and its neighbors. My experience provided a starting point for continuing my aspiration of a career focused on social justice and international affairs. As a result of the trip, I feel confident in my ability to talk about my experience in the classroom while correcting inaccurate, preconceived ideas about the region."

- Trisha CamaraSophomore at Loyola University Chicago

INTERFAITH The Binding Commitment program is a unique professional development opportunity for Catholic school educators in Chicago. The program provides the training and resources necessary to teach their students about the Holocaust and the historical relationship between the Jewish and Catholic communities. ADL partners with the Archdiocese of Chicago, Office of Catholic Schools, to present a two-day professional development seminar for Catholic School educators (grades 4-12). The first session is held on a Friday in August at North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe, IL, followed by an inspiring Shabbat service and dinner with Holocaust survivors. The second session takes place at the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center in Skokie and, after the coursework, includes a tour of the Museum.

■ HOLA OLAM

2016 marked the second of year of Hola Olam (hola means "hello" in Spanish and olam means "world" in Hebrew), ADL’s Latino-Jewish intercultural program for high school students. The initiative is designed to encourage interaction, cooperation, and understanding between the next generation of Latinos and Jews in Chicago. These new connections will act as an important means to fight hate, discrimination, and intolerance, both locally and globally. The group met in Chicago for three educational programs based on curriculum from ADL’s award-winning A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute, including sessions at the National Museum of Mexican Art and Univision television studios, where students observed a live newscast.

YOUNG LEADERSHIP

The Glass Leadership Institute (GLI) is a national program, offered locally in Chicago and Indianapolis, that introduces the next generation of Jewish activists and leaders to ADL. Each year GLI accepts young professionals, ranging in age from 25-40, who are interested in learning about ADL’s mission and ways they can get involved. In the past year, GLI participants visited the Chicago offices of the FBI, met with ADL National and Midwest Regional staff, and discussed a myriad of topics, from international affairs and civil rights to law enforcement, media relations, and education.

Rosenwald: The Remarkable Story of a Jewish Partnership with African American Communities

ADL and the Chicago Urban League partnered for a special screening and discussion of the acclaimed documentary, Rosenwald: The Remarkable Story

of a Jewish Partnership with African American Communities. This film traces the story of Jewish philanthropist Julius Rosenwald’s (President and Chairman of Sears from 1908-1932) efforts to join with African American communities in the South to build schools during the early part of the twentieth century. From the 1910s into the early 1930s, more than 5,300 Rosenwald schools were constructed in African American communities throughout 15 Southern states.
