Challenges & Sustainable Solutions• Electricity – Many of India’s villages have good solar coverage - solar

power is environmental friendly as well

• Need to aggressively launch solar-based power generation in our villages

• At key locations such as the village center or the schools, and extend to individual homes

• Implement microgrids where possible

• Backup power could be tapped from local solar instead of from the electricity grid

• DC appliances could be designed to avoid loss of DC-to-AC and AC-to-DC conversions

• Services to manage generation and utilization of electricity from renewable sources in general would be useful

Challenges & Sustainable Solutions• Electricity (Contd)

• Storage of generated electricity is an issue

• Two-way grids could be used to avoid need for local storage

• Amrita’s Nanotech infused solar panels with integrated storage is interesting

• www.selco-india.com is doing good work to enable solar (financing / technology)

• Water – providing water to everyone

• Services to monitor water-levels and managing and regulating water supply can help

• Transportation – Need to increase the availability of public transport, and use of alternate transportation means (such as EVs) without using diesel or petrol

Buddhi-Edge

- Taking Education to the edge

- Distributed virtual machines exchanging edu content

Edge Services for Disaster Mgmt (Sankat Edge)– Reuse Existing Infrastructure (such as for education)

- Combine Education and Disaster mgmt functions- Dynamic deployment of edge services as needed

Adhoc communications support for disaster mgmt -Use adhoc deployed LTE ENodeBs/Relays or adhoc WiFi to extend

coverage-Solar powered base-stations for local coverage

Some relevant efforts at IBM

• Smarter Planets / Smarter Energy

• Cognitive Computing

“Cognitive computing systems learn and interact naturally with people to extend what either man or machine could do on their own. “

• Watson and healthcare – could be applied to provide cognitive healthcare information services for disaster mgmt

A parting comment• We are asking – what we can offer to our villages?

• We should also ask – what can we learn from our villages?

• Not all aspects of urban advancement is beneficial to humanity at large

• We need to ask what do people really need and then make a difference there

• Both villages and cities can learn from each other and make our world a better place to live in.
