Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief

organization driven by the vision of a world without

hunger.

In 1998, Ray Buchanan founded Rise Against Hunger with the mission to end world hunger by providing food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable and creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources. Rise Against Hunger’s work is guided by the recognition that ending hunger requires more than just feeding people. Rise Against Hunger’s approach to ending hunger centers on mobilizing a global network of hunger champions. Rise Against Hunger meal packaging volunteers produce millions of nutritious meals annually that are then distributed to partners in countries around the world. Those partners are best able to address the causes and effects of hunger based on their local presence and expertise. Through a thorough monitoring and evaluation process, Rise Against Hunger ensures that the meals distributed by those partners are used as a tool to change lives by promoting education, improving students’ health and nutrition, addressing gender inequalities, stimulating economic growth and fighting child labor.

PROGRAMS

1. Meal PackagingOne in three people worldwide are adversely affected by vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Rise Against Hunger meals, packaged by volunteers, are designed to provide a comprehensive array of micronutrients. Rise Against Hunger meals include enriched rice, soy protein, dried vegetables and 23 essential vitamins and nutrients. Since 2005, volunteer groups have packaged nearly 500 million meals, and each year, hundreds of thousands of volunteers are engaged globally. Rise Against Hunger relies on groups of any size in locations across the world to package meals which are provided in schools to encourage increased enrollment and attendance. For adults in community empowerment programs, the provision of meals offsets productive time lost while attending training sessions. Meals distributed in hospitals and clinics may support patients’ nutritional needs and complement their treatments.

2. Safety NetsWhile long-term food security projects take root, vulnerable families and individuals still need to meet their basic needs today. Rise Against Hunger supports safety net programs that provide nourishment as well as additional skills training or services that support the difficult journey out of poverty. These volunteer-packaged meals support children’s attendance at school, incentivize adults to learn a new trade or bolster clinic patients’ health in order to bring about holistic and transformational development in each of their lives.

3. Crisis ReliefFrom droughts to floods, in conflict zones and transitioning political situations, food is often the most immediate need. When everyday access to food, wages, and market systems are destroyed in the wake of emergencies, Rise Against Hunger works through a network of in-country partners to address these needs. Rise Against Hunger strives to ensure aid is efficiently and effectively deployed to and received by communities when it is needed most.

Strategic Leadership

• Set forth and execute against an inspiring and actionable vision.

• Provide leadership, management, and mentoring to staff while preserving open communication and recognizing the value of the management team.

• Ensure that all RAH financial standards, operating policies, programmatic commitment and legal/statutory requirements are met.

• Focus resources on the most critical, high-leverage projects and strategies, including policy development and public engagement, focused on population centers.

• Strengthen the diversity of the local RAH’s Board of Directors and help them build their food security awareness, engage in RAH’s overall goals, and cultivate and manage their individual and external fundraising capacity toward the overall objectives of the organization.

Essential Responsibilities

Local and Global Operations

• Manage the day-to-day operations of the office, including setting financial and programmatic goals, analyzing results and taking corrective action in close collaboration with local and national staff.

• Ensure the effective overall administration of RAH’s global operations.

• Oversee and implement appropriate resources (human, financial, and assets) to ensure the operations of the organization are appropriate, will support the mission and propel growth – while also achieving high value-for money results.

• Identify and take proactive measures to mitigate financial, operational, safety / security, and reputational risks to the organization.

• Ensure accurate and timely reports that transparently reflect both the financial condition and programmatic inputs and outputs of the organization.

• Perform all Board-authorized fiduciary obligations and governance reporting as required; ensure best practices and compliance across diverse set of local and global legislative and other regulatory requirements.

Resource Mobilization & External Engagement

• Represent RAH throughout the region and raise its profile and visibility to funders, partners, policy makers and the public which results in deeper donor satisfaction and investment.

• Strengthen the financially sustainable business and development plans that cultivates, maintains and augments relationships with the current donors and identifies and expands new funding sources.

• Play a key role in fundraising to ensure RAH’s ability to cultivate existing and solicit new major donors, foundations, corporations and government agencies to significantly increase contributions.

• Work with government departments and non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) to promote and prioritize food security initiatives globally.

Team Leadership

• Communicate and prioritize effectively with leadership to ensure productive and impact-oriented use of organizational resources on a day-to-day basis.

• Lead, mentor, oversee and retain a high performing team of senior staff. Play a key leadership role in promoting a culture that values staff engagement, professional development, ongoing learning, responsiveness, and retention – ensuring team alignment on mission and goals.

• Enhance organizational excellence and a solid performance management culture by establishing the operational benchmarks, timelines, and resources needed to achieve strategic goals – proactively recommending and driving improvements as necessary -and setting standards for accountability and measures of success across teams.

• Execute on agreed goals, objectives, and key performance indicators in an on-time and accurate manner. Effectively advise and manage senior leadership to ensure delivery at all levels of the organization.

• Demonstrate and represent RAH’s values and impact with integrity both internally and externally; inspire confidence and forward-looking orientation for a fast-growing organization through sustainable structures and processes.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

• Change Management – Success positioning organizations to be responsive to risk, change, and readiness. Experience driving thoughtful organizational development through periods of growth, building up robust infrastructure while not losing the ability to remain agile. Ability to exhibit courage amidst change management situations.

• Resource mobilization/Fundraising: Proven track record raising significant amounts of capital/funding, including for ideas as well as portfolio of donors. Demonstrated success in building, maintaining and expanding relationships with diverse funders. Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build and sustain strong support across a wide range of stakeholders including staff, Board, donors, partners, volunteers and the public. Ability to identify, place and develop a strong Development Team as necessary.

• Stakeholder Management & Representation: Demonstrated ability in effectively working with internal team members as well as external senior level executives and officials in both the public and private sectors. Extensive experience in networking and relationship and alliance building across culturally diverse organizations and stakeholders. A natural bridge-builder and unifier that breaks down silos through cross-functional relationships and collaboration.

• Operational Expertise and Sector Specific Knowledge – Strong knowledge of the humanitarian food security and/or adjacent sector or industry and a grasp on the root causes and potential steps towards solutions. Familiarity with relevant institutional (government, private foundations, etc) funding priorities and mechanisms as major asset. Ability to understand organization’s operations and quickly improve, refine, evolve and innovate processes to ensure goals are achieved.

• Cultural Awareness & Interpersonal Humility – Ability to notice and understand the perception, concerns, and insights of a global audience. Recognize and respect different cultural environments and practices and lead with sensitivity as the impact and footprint of the organization grows. Emotional intelligence to and hyper-awareness of culture and environment across the organization and a healing approach to culture as an accelerant and amplifier of the mission.

• Global Perspective and Mindset – Significant experience living and/or working globally is a strong preference. Without experience living or working globally, candidates must demonstrate empathy for, exposure to, and ability to navigate global cultures as well as global business negotiations.

Education Requirements• Bachelor’s degree required.• Minimum 10 years of progressively advancing management experience required.

Travel• Ability to travel up to 30% of the time to various RAH sites across the country as well as international

location (potentially high-risk locations).
