Traffic – Airports: McCarran International Airport is the main

commercial airport for Las Vegas and Clark County, Nevada, even for

Mohave County, Arizona. The airport is about 5 miles south of downtown

Las Vegas, in the unincorporated area of Paradise. It covers roughly 2,800

acres, with four runways and two terminals. McCarran is owned by Clark

County and operated by the Clark County Department of Aviation. The

airport is the largest operating base for Allegiant Air and Southwest

Airlines. In February 2012, McCarran also became a crew and

maintenance base for Spirit Airlines. McCarran is ranked the 24th busiest

airport by passenger traffic in the world, with 41,856,787 passengers

transiting through the airport in 2013. In terms of aircraft movements, the

airport ranks 8th in the world with 527,739 take-offs and landings.

Between May 2013 and April 2014, the busiest scheduled airlines flying out

of McCarran were Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines,

Kingman Airport is located nine miles northeast of Kingman on Arizona

State Route 66. The airport was originally built as Kingman Army Air Field

during World War II, and was home to the Kingman Aerial Gunnery School.

After the war, large numbers of USAAF aircraft were stored and dismantled

at Kingman. The airport was turned over to Mohave County for civilian use

in 1949. Today, the airport has air ambulance and air charter services, and

daily scheduled regional airline services to Las Vegas and Farmington. The

airport continues to be used as a location for long-term aircraft storage due

to its suitable large ramp space and a long decommissioned runway.

Many millions of dollars have been earmarked for the Kingman area to

build new highways and expand their airports. Mohave County offers a “last

depot stop” for corporations who desire a shipping/inventory/manufacturing

hub along I-40 before entering the California market. Southern California is

a 4 hour drive on I-40, and the drive to Las Vegas is below 90 minutes.

Traffic – Railways: Kingman has passenger rail service at its train station.

It is served by the Amtrak Southwest Chief route, with daily service

between Los Angeles and Chicago. The small Amtrak station in downtown

Kingman is a historically significant building, constructed in Mission Revival

Style architecture; however, prior to the establishment of Amtrak in 1971,

the structure had fallen into disrepair with the decline of passenger rail

service in the U.S. A total renovation of the building was completed in

2010. While still serving as a railroad station, the building is also now home

Kingman also is located on the Southern Transcon route of the BNSF

Railway. This is the main transcontinental route between Los Angeles and

Chicago, and carries 100 to 150 freight trains per day.

In August 2012 the Kingman Terminal Railroad ( KGTR ) opened at the

Kingman Airport Authority and Industrial Park. The KGTR is a short line

railroad owned by Patriot Rail. Patriot Rail owns and operates 13 railroads

in 13 states across the U.S. The KGTR interchanges with BNSF and

Kingman has one of the largest medical centers in the area, employing

over 500 persons. One of the largest auto proving centers in the world

operated by the Ford Motor Company employs almost 250 persons in the

Kingman area. Nearby Kingman has over 500 people working in their

elementary schools, over 120 in their high school, and over 120 in their

community college. Companies located in the Kingman area include

General Cable Corp. (makes wires and cable), over 250 people. Tucher

Housewares (makes plastic house ware), over 200 people. Bayliner Marine

(makes pleasure boats), over 50 people Smiths and K-Mart retail stores

have over 300 employees. There are such well known companies in

Kingman as McDonalds, Safeway Ford, Burger King, Chrysler/Dodge, and

hundreds of others. The access to Interstate 40 to the south is as

significant to the county’s growth as any factor. As the "last stop" before the

California border to the west and then onto the Southern California market,

and its ports to Asia and China, companies are attracted to our lower land

costs and reliable power and resources, to set up distribution centers and

industrial parks in Mohave County.

Southern Californians who come in summer are referred to by locals as

“River Rats”, while those who visit in winter from the Midwest and Canada

are called “Snow Birds. Many will choose to move to the area once they

retire.

And while the area offers Las Vegas-style casinos, sports books, day spas,

and entertainment across the river in Laughlin, NV, in the Mohave Valley

you can play with your family in parks, cheer the state champion high

school sports teams, and meet close friends and neighbors at community-

sponsored festivals and concerts. Las Vegas is not their backyard, and

residents like it that way. But Vegas is an easy drive to what is arguably the

world’s largest adult playground with unbelievable shopping, dining, and

premier entertainment and sports.

Residential and Population Growth: As a single example of the growth

prospects of Bullhead City, there are currently 42,000 residents. Laughlin

Ranch, the largest master-planned community of 11,000 acres, plans

the construction of 44,000 homes in the next 15 years. 3,500 home sites

are currently in development in Bullhead City behind the Riverview Mall,

which is alongside Highway 95.

5 premier golf courses have been constructed in the region since 2000,

around which residential communities will eventually be expanded. The Old

Riviera Section of Bullhead City plans to develop 254 acres. The Bullhead

Parkway contains many communities for all price ranges - it carves into the

eastern hills of Bullhead City and Mohave Valley, and empties on its south

side at Mohave Community College. .

El Rio Country Club is a 600-home site golf community that has adjacent

resort community.

With the U.S. Baby-Boomer population waiting to peak in 2016 and beyond

as the retirement age is raised, we expect continued growth in the area as

Lake Mohave & the Colorado River: Three miles from Laughlin is Davis Damn and Lake Mohave. The lake has 237 miles of shoreline. Plenty of pure white sandy beaches for swimming and fishing. The reason for Laughlin's phenomenal growth: (1) unlike Las Vegas, Laughlin is a water-oriented, recreational community; and (2) it caters to middle-American "shirt-sleeve gamblers" who find the common-touch atmosphere of Laughlin less intimidating than the glitz of the Las Vegas strip. During the entire year, because of the extensive recreational activities afforded by the Colorado River and Lake Mohave, the area attracts both weekend summer sports enthusiasts and a year round mobile population of retirees who settle in the Colorado River communities during the mild winter months. The Colorado River, like Lake Mohave, is known as the world's largest inland Striper Bass fishery. The river also offers but throat trout, largemouth bass, pan fish, crappie and catfish. There are also plenty of 25 lb. carp for special ethnic holiday festivities.

Lake Mohave is 67 miles long and has a surface area of 44 square miles.

behind Davis Dam, the lake is part of the Lake Mead National Recreation

Area. There are plenty of golf and tennis facilities in the general area. The

Lake Mead National Recreation Area is the U.S.'s first and largest national

recreation area. It encompasses an area twice the size of the state of

Rhode Island. On the Colorado River, the Little Belle, a 150 passenger

side-wheeler, makes frequent departures from the Edgewater Casino,

docks in Laughlin, and the double-decker Fiesta Queen offers daily cruises

every two hours. You can rent boats, fishing tackle, etc. in Bullhead City

pro shops. Some time ago, Chet Moreland, proprietor of Smitty's Bait &

Tackle, officially logged in a trophy inland striped bass caught by a

Bullhead City man. The fish measured 48 inches and weighed in at a

whopping 40 lbs. More recently, a new record of 59 lbs. 12 oz. was taken

from the river 15 to 25 lb. fish are common.

In winter, when much of the United States and Canada shivers in below

freezing temperatures, mild and sunny days prevail in Mohave County,

Arizona.
