GE Victorville -Functional testing toestablish flow rate beforeconnection to the engineand the commencementof the trials

You may remember the cover storyof our 2006 newsletter highlightingthe built in engine water washsystem on the GP7200 engine jointlydeveloped by GE and P&W for theAirbus A380 aircraft. Well, threeyears on and GE have included anoption for this system on the GEnxengine fitted to the Boeing 787Dreamliner and Boeing 747-800.

The new system is designed to flush waterthrough the engine core at idle speed, eliminating the need to collect waste waterand contaminants, as these are burned upduring the wash and expelled as steam.

Juniper have developed a new rigspecifically for this engine, and in November2008 it was put through it's paces on aGEnx1B engine fitted in the number twoposition on GE's flying test-bed Boeing 747at the Victorville site in California. Havingundergone some modification andimprovement during development, wewere keen to see how the rig performed.

Results were impressive and the rigaquitted itself very well; in fact a 7º EGTrecovery was achieved, which isremarkable considering the engine wasa relatively clean one.

Juniper’s new GEnx rig passes the test..!

Juniper’s growing family of Foaming Rigs...Juniper has long manufactured arange of foaming rigs for exterioraircraft washing; from the relativelysmall and maneuverable 50ltr rig, upto the self contained petrol or dieselcompressor driven 250ltr version.

The newly developed trailer mountedFoamer 250 (JMP/FOAM/D/6602) is the

latest addition to this comprehensiverange and was one of nineteen items ofground support equipment purchased fordemonstrating to potential HAWKcustomers at RAF Valley, North Wales. Foryears now Juniper Foaming rigs havegiven excellent service worldwide, and thislatest trailer mounted version incorporatessome important enhancements and

modifications. Another example ofJuniper's rolling programme ofcontinuous development andimprovement. To find out more, pleasecontact us.

Waste water collection - progress...!At Juniper, we have long been concerned withthe collection of waste water and contaminantsduring washes and have investigated most ofthe collection systems available.

We see a lot of potential in the LatimatContainment System, invented by DougLatimer, and now marketed by KyotoContainment Systems Inc. of Ontario, Canadawho acquired the exclusive licence to thepatents in 2008. In fact, having tested thesystem, we have developed a transportationand deployment trolley for the KyotoContainment Mat (as it is now called) thatcomplements the Juniper equipment perfectly. To find out more about the Kyoto system inconjunction with Juniper equipment pleasecontact us.

JT8D ProbesJuniper’s longest yet

In China at the beginning of 2008,Steve Marshall, Juniper's MDvisited the Aircraft MaintenanceEngineering Company (GAMECO)with Zhang Quan and Cui Lei fromour Chinese agents, The BeijingPower-Ring Tech & Trading Co. toperform demonstration enginewashes using our 2x25 galloncompressor washing rig.

First up, the portability andconvenience of the Juniper rig washighlighted with a 5.00am trip to aremote part of Baiyun InternationalAirport for an engine wash on a CFM56-5B engine fitted to an Airbus A320 forChina Southern Airlines. This wasfollowed 24 hours later by another earlymorning wash - a V2500 engine fitted toan Airbus A319.

The next day, Steve together withZhang Quan and Cui Lei, met Mr. Nix Li,Managing Engineer - Power Plant forGAMECO for a very pleasant lunchbefore rounding things off that nightwith the final engine wash on a Boeing777-21B fitted with GE90-92B engines, again for China Southern Airlines; thistime using a set of our GE90-115B longengine probes (JMP/GE-90115B/D/4948).

The washes all went well with plenty ofpositive feedback for Juniper's equipment.

In February, 2008 Steve Marshalltravelled to Istanbul Attaturk Airport,Turkey primarily to commission a2x25 gallon compressor washing rig(JMP/CFM56/D/4777/C200) for OnurAir and perform a trial wash using thenewly developed JT8D long engineprobes (JMP/JT8D/D/6627).

Steve was particularly interested inthese trials as they are the longestprobes that Juniper has produced andwere still relatively untested. As ithappens we were only able to carry outa trial fit of the probes on one of theirP&W JT8D-219 engines fitted to theirMD83 aircraft. After someexperimentation it was established thatprobes at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock

positions worked best and Onur Airhave since performed successfulengine washes using thisconfiguration. While he was there,Steve took the opportunity to make anumber of courtesy callsaccompanied by Juniper's Turkishagent, Zeki Koroglu of MillenniumAerospace Supplies Trading.

The first visit was to MMG Technic todiscuss aircraft exterior washing withinterest also being shown in theprototype JT8D long probes. Fromthere, Steve and Zeki paid a visit toTurkish Airlines to check how therecently purchased 2x25 compressorwashing rig was performing andanswer any questions they may have. They expressed themselves delightedwith the rig and Juniper was able tohelp them with a number of issuesarising from it's use. All in all, a welltimed visit.

Tunisair - first rig!

Juniper can now offer remote operationon their 2x25 and 2x50 gallon rigs, primarily for use in test cells.

There are two ways of achieving thismodification. The first option is a suppliedaddition to an existing rig and consists of anactuated ball valve between the outlet of thedelivery hose and the twin hose assembly. The valve is housed in it's own box andcomes supplied with a 'plug and go' remotedevice. Connection of the valve is via quickrelease couplings, with the remote controlswitch attached using the supplied cableand Harting connector. This switch can nowbe positioned outside the test cell.

The second and preferred option, requiresreplacing the standard outlet ball valveswith actuated ball valves during the rig'smanufacture. As in option one, a remoteswitch is connected to the rig via a cableand Harting connector enabling operationfrom outside the test cell.

The plug and go system was ordered anddeveloped for Rolls Royce in Derby,England for use with it’s Juniper 2x25gallon rig in their test bed, and the factoryfitted option was delivered to GE EngineServices in Malaysia for one of their testcells near Kuala Lumpur.

April 2008, and it's a visit to AeroportTunis, Tunisia for personnel trainingand the commissioning of a 2x25gallon compressor washing rigcomplete with the 115/200v, 3 phase,400Hz heating system for Tunisair. This was their first experience ofengine water washing and we werekeen to demonstrate the benefits ofthe Juniper system.

An Airbus 320 fitted with CFM56-5Aengines was made available to us, andusing Juniper's CFM56-2/5A probes(JMP/CFM56/D/4435), a very successfultraining session and demonstrationengine wash was performed.

Now here’s something Remotely Interesting..!

Top Photo: the ‘Plug and Go’ option for remote operation. Above: The actuated ball valves in position on the rig.

During his visit to the USA late in2008, Steve Marshall took theopportunity to pay a courtesyvisit to American Airlines, a long-standing and valued customer, tosee how things were going withthe Juniper equipment they wereusing and get some feedback onit's operation.

While he was there Steve met HerbWilliams, the Technical Crew Chief, who uses the Juniper rig daily andwas very impressed with the resultsthey have been achieving - in fact, figures quoted in American Airline’sown newsletter state that regularengine washing accounts for fuelsavings of $135 million a year andprolongs an engine's effective life.

Thumbs up from American Airlines

In January 2009, Steve Marshallvisited the GMF AeroAsia GarudaIndonesia Group in Indonesia tocommission their new 2x25 gallon rig.

Training was also to be given to theengineers who would be using theequipment; 32 of them in total, so a bigclassroom was needed..!

After intensive training sessions, the rig wasput through it's paces. For the first wash, theCFM56-3 engine on a Boeing 737-300 wastackled using the Juniper CFM56-3 probes(JMP/CFM56/D/4538) before moving on tothe CF6-80C2 engine fitted to a Boeing747-400 using the CF6-80C2 probes(JMP/CF6/D/4037). Both washes were asuccess, and in the final question andanswer session back at the classroom, theengineers were unanimous in their praisefor the Juniper system.

Juniper has a growing network ofagents representing the company allaround the world, and in 2007 wewelcomed Chandrakant Sheth andhis company Chandra International, who now represent Juniper in India.Mr Sheth has a colourful history andis credited with introducing theballpoint pen into India..!

Juniper cautions against the use of Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) in water wash carts equipped withimmersion heaters due to its flammability. GE concurs with this and cautions are provided inthe Aircraft Maintenance manuals to this effect.

If water washing at temperatures lower that 50C / 400F is desired, GE recommends:

2. Flush the water tanks twice with water to ensure thatall IPA has been removed.

1. Disable the immersion heaters.

3. Use IPA for anti-icing as defined in the AMM.

The immersion heaters may be displaced in several ways, including a lock out / tag out of theelectrical plug. At warmer temperatures, the immersion heaters may be enabled and warmwater washes conducted.

Water washing below -100C / 40F is not recommended.

Industry alternatives to IPA have been considered, but have not proved acceptable.

No other alternatives have yet been identified, though GE are continuing to look.

Preparation foran engine wash often

necessitates the openingof the thrust reverser doors.

When this is not required, or canbe avoided by the use of anelectronic device for opening VSV'sand closing VBV's (eg. Trent CoreWash VSV driver and GE's VSV/VBVFADEC HMU Driver Simulatortooling) then Juniper's long engineprobes, which take only minutes tofit, can save considerable time andmake the engine washing processeven easier.

Robert Bonazza of Pacific Dynamics,Juniper's agent in Australia, wasinterviewed early last year for AviationBusiness Asia Pacific magazine aftersecuring an order for nine Universal 2x25gallon rigs (JMP/HER/D/1144C600) withthe RAAF. Robert went on to explain thebenefits of regular engine washing and hotwater washing in particular, while outliningthe advantages of the Juniper system.
