THE JIBSHEET MILWAUKEE COMMUNITY SAILING CENTER www.sailingcenter.org Fall 2012 For the latest info... The 2013 US Disabled Sailing Championship comes to MCSC Milwaukee Community Sailing Center has been selected to host the 2013 US Disabled Sailing Championship by US Sailing. This event is the national championship for disabled sailors and will be held on the Great Lakes for the first time September 5-8, 2013. Any sailor with a disability including quadriplegics, paraplegics and amputees, as well as individuals with multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, polio and ALS can compete. In this series, rather than PHRF rating the boats, each sailor is given a rating based on the severity of his or her respective disability. Ratings are given on a scale of one to seven, one being the most severe and seven being the least severe. The Championship will bring in approximately 50 competitors including paralympic medalists. The four-day event will include a racing clinic on Thursday, three races on Friday and Saturday, with two final races and awards ceremony on Sunday. MCSC will partner will many Milwaukee Bay area boat yards, marinas and sport fishermen for powerboats and other resources needed for the athletes, coaches and support teams. The local regatta co-chairs are the husband and wife team of Helen “Cookie” Mueller and John Archibald. Local sailor and Paraolympian Jon Ruf (2008 bronze medalist) is also serving on the host committee. US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics Para- lympic Coach Betsy Alison will conduct the clinic. The Championship will feature racing in three fleets: the single-handed 2.4mR, double-handed Ideal-18 and the open three-person Sonar keelboat. In the 2.4mR class sailors will compete for the Judd Goldman Trophy. The Ideal-18 class will try to take home the Chandler Hovey Trophy. The triple-handed division will compete in Sonar kneel boats for the Gene Hinkel Trophy. MCSC has had an active Adaptive Sail Program since its earliest seasons, averaging 700 participants in recent years. MCSC is preparing its facilities to host the event by refurbishing its two dockside hoyer lifts and constructing a new pedestrian friendly entry way. The US Disabled Sailing Championship will be a big undertaking for MCSC that will take a lot of fundraising effort and vol- unteer hours. If you would like to help us stage a successful regatta, please let us know by calling MCSC or sending a mes- sage to [email protected]. From The Helm I am so happy to have joined the staff at MCSC as we move forward on many new and exciting fronts. On the ground, the Board of Directors approved a 10 year Capital Improvement Plan. This year the big project was the new entry way. Next year we plan to upgrade the dock house area (yes, we’ll add some shade!). On the water we’re adding more 420’s to our fleet and hosting a national championship regatta. Inside our building we’re doing more year round programming through fall and winter classes, as well as new ideas from the Ambassadors, to add more value to your annual membership. I look forward to many new adventures with the crew at MCSC. Margaret Jaberg, MCSC CEO

Summer 2012 Fun Facts

Almost 650 children and adults took part in Sailing Center classes this summer

47% of our new, adult stu-dents were women

Our top 4 MCSC boat users were women: Bonnee Beth Lugauer took the first spot, followed closely by Arlene Wisotzke, Teresa Coronado and Pamela Eversfield. Inci-dentally, these women were ALSO our top boat users in 2011!

Our busiest day of Open Sailing was Sunday, June 17 – Father’s Day! We had 58 members come sailing with 61 guests in tow. On that day, the boats were out Open Sailing on the water for a combined sailing time of 89 hours!!

1,073 people took boat rides and over 692 of them were persons with disabilities

251 members joined the Enrichment Club program

3,630 hours were recorded for Open Sailing on the boats

2,200 hours averaged for Enrichment Club on the boats

3,000+ hours averaged for Class Time on the boats

3,400+ hours averaged for volunteer time in teaching sailing and giving boat rides

Pizzazz was most used boat logging at least 125 Open Sails (not including instruc-tion sails), followed closely by Spirit with over 120 Open Sails and Badger with 115 Open Sails

Around the Buoy’s The 2012 Racing Season at MCSC

All the members of MCSC’s Enrichment Program are welcome to race on Sunday mornings. Not as competitive as Wednesday or Friday night racing, it teaches the fundamentals of starts and rounding the marks, providing an opportunity for everyone to improve their skills. However, on the racecourse the crew must work together in a faster paced environment, so sailing can be more intense than during Spinnaker Club, but fun and educational, too.

Every summer MCSC runs several race days where results are tallied and winners celebrated with trophies. This year they included the Mid Season Championship in July, the Quarter Barrel Regatta in August, and a full weekend early in September with the Fall Regatta and Chili Chill Out on Saturday with the Ensign Championship on Sunday. Only the Ensign Championship is limited to MCSC Ensigns, the other three races allow other boats in their own divisions.

Changes for 2013

Our Sunday morning racing is more popular than ever which means more boats are participating. As you know, while racing, the pace is quicker and the boats are all traveling along the same route. This can cause some close encounters.

To keep this popular program available to every-one, MCSC will be implementing some new re-quirements for its racing program in 2013, in-cluding a MCSC Race Skipper Certification. Go-ing forward, to skipper an MCSC boat for racing you will have to fulfill several requirements in-cluding completing a class during the winter schedule (offered several times on the enclosed flyer), doing an on the water clinic and holding a minimum rating of Medium Air for at least one year. Please plan for these new requirements if you want to skipper next summer.

New and returning crew members are always welcome. Sunday racing CREW do not need a certification, only Enrichment membership!!

Get Your MCSC Gear

Anyone who has gone through a basic sailing class at MCSC knows their instructors are sail enthusiasts who love to share their knowledge of the sport. Once out on the water, though, it’s the volunteer instructors who ride along that first week and make those lessons come to life.

MCSC could not accomplish what it does without the support of a team of volunteer instructors. Besides gently remind-ing about the how-to’s of sailing as they ride along with the students, they model the “community spirit” that makes MCSC such a special place. Many of these volunteers also share their passion on the weekends at Spinnaker Club Satur-days and Racing Sundays.

For serving as a highly rated volunteer instructor (by her students) and for being a strong community sailing supporter, MCSC honored Teresa Coronado with the Hank Feiertag Memorial Volunteer Instructor of the Year Award for 2012. Thanks Teresa, for your dedication to MCSC!
