For the Least of These: Mexico September 1, 2016 For the Least of These: Mexico Morelos Casa Hogar Kids The children of the Casa Hogar (children’s home) are doing well, and send many thoughts and blessings to their sponsors. They are so thankful for your love, thoughts, and support. Summer, 2016 Backpacks for Everyone! Thanks to generous donations from sponsors in the United States, and the efforts of Jennifer and Jabon Butler in coordinating fundraising efforts, we were able to bring each child a new backpack to start the school year. Backpacks from the United States are of significantly better quality for a lower price than those available in Mexico, and the kids were grateful for how thoughtful donors and sponsors were in selecting them. With money donated, I was also able to contribute to local businesses and fill the backpacks with hygiene and clothing items needed by the kids. Two adolescents/young adults who used to live at the Casa Hogar, Lupita & Raul Tapia Torres, went with me to choose the items to put inside. Since they spent their childhood at the Casa Hogar, they had a better understanding of the needs of the kids, and enjoyed giving back to their childhood home by going with me to choose items. It’s been 2 years too long since we organized a service-learning trip to Cuernavaca to provide an opportunity for you to meet or reconnect with your sponsor-child and other children of the Casa Hogar, as well as learn about the culture of Mexico and the situations that lead to a need for children’s homes. If you are interested in joining a trip next summer, please contact me ([email protected]) or check our website (www.fortheleastofthesemexico.com) & facebook (facebook.com/fortheleastofthesemexico) for more information. Address Change! Vince & I moved (again!), so please note our new address in Denver. Zapatas Nuevas!

All of the kids wear uniforms to school, & new school shoes need to be purchased annually due to growing children & frequent use. This year, I was able to take the children to a shoe store down the street from the Casa Hogar to buy new shoes. All of the kids were so excited to have the opportunity to choose their own shoes, even within the constraints of the school style.

Meeting Former Casa Hogar Children

Young Adults Since we have been involved in the Casa Hogar, we have watched many of our children grow into young adults. We do our best to provide opportunities for university or professional training after they leave the Casa Hogar, and it has become more important than ever for us to continue to stay in contact with them in the years after they finish high school. Lupita is beginning her second year studying community education in a university program with a partial scholarship. Her brother Raul is beginning his third year studying architecture with a partial scholarship and a private sponsor at another local university. Both also have part-time jobs to support themselves and are shining examples to the other children. If you are interested in continuing to support one of the young adults after leaving the Casa Hogar, please contact us. Our goal is to support their education while fostering independence and self-sufficiency.

change & family is again able to care for the child. Two years ago, three siblings, Carlos, Manuel, & Dianita, returned to live with their mother. I was able to meet up with these kids & their mother & help them purchase school supplies and school shoes, an expense that is impossible for many families in Mexico. Although they are currently living in poverty, it was beautiful to watch the children interact with their mother, & a privilege to support their family. Although we fully support the Casa Hogar, we also truly believe that children belong in families, & we pray for the safety of the children who return to live with relatives. Dianita & Carlos even joined me to visit their friends at the Casa Hogar.

Although some of the children at the Casa Hogar as “true orphans”, others have a parent or extended family members that are unable to care for them due to poverty and/or living conditions that are unsafe for the child (e.g., exposure to violence, addiction, prostitution, abuse, or neglect). Sometimes, situations

As always, we are so grateful for your support of the children (& young adults) of the Casa Hogar.

Blessings,

Alison & Vincent Colbert
