When visitors stop by Memphis in the month of August, they are immediately aware of two things. The first is our steamy weather, and the second is our love of rock ‘n’ roll! We Memphians are used to the humid bad hair days and the sticky summer nights of the mid-south, but family and friends from out of town are still trying to keep their curls! We live in our shorts and sandals from April until October, and though we hate to admit it, some of us will wear our shorts right up until Christmas! You can always tell a visitor if they’ve gone downtown for lunch at noon, tried to eat BBQ wearing white or tried to visit Graceland in January or August! Guests wonder about the rumor that Elvis is still alive! Some say he is and that his legend will live on forever. Elvis fans in August are everywhere! You can hear Elvis music, attend candlelight vigils, buy T-shirts and Elvis sunglasses, and yes, even the infamous white jumpsuit can be found on every Beale Street corner. Memphians have a hunka hunka burnin’ love for the King! August 16 marks the 40th anniversary of his death, and we are still as faithful to him as ever! August may be hot, but here at Belmont Village we are cool as cucumbers as we celebrate our end of summer bash with a themed Elvis party! Be on the lookout for your invite in the mail. We don’t get “All Shook Up” over the weather because we are in a “World of Our Own.” We know how to beat the heat. All you need is a good shade hat, an ice cold drink and a pair of “Blue Suede Shoes!” and we’ll sail right through August in “Memphis, Tennessee.”

Hydration and SeniorsAre you drinking enough

water? Although the amount ofwater a person needs to drinkvaries, a general rule of thumb isat least eight—eight glasses of 8ounces of water per day.

Our bodies use the water wedrink to replenish the moisture welose throughout the day. Water isneeded to hydrate blood andtissue, lubricate joints, regulatebody temperature, promotedigestion and plays an integralpart in ridding one’s body ofwaste. More than 50% of one’sbody is comprised of water, making it a vital part inmaintaining a healthy body.

If we fail to replace the waterour body has used, we may sufferfrom dehydration. Dehydration isa physiological state where one’sbody does not have enough fluidsto perform its functions.

Seniors are very susceptible todehydration and must be sure tostay properly hydrated. Seniors areless likely than younger adults torealize that they are thirsty, causing them to drink fewerliquids. At the same time, theymight routinely take medicationsor ingest caffeinated and alcoholicdrinks, which have diuretic effects.Furthermore, the kidneys of some

older adults may have a reducedability to regulate their bodies’water levels.

Taking a deliberate role instaying hydrated is very importantfor seniors; therefore, here areseveral ways to help keep yourselfand your loved ones hydrated:

• Don’t wait until you arethirsty to drink, your bodyalways needs water

• Drink at least 8 glasses ofliquids per day

• When at home, keep ice anddrinks within reach

• Drink frequently during thedaytime, rather than drinkinglarge amounts at one time

• Eat fresh fruits and vegetableswith high water content(watermelon, lettuce, grapes.etc.)

-Linda Bello, Memphis DRCS

Don’t Forget Your FeetIf warmer weather has you

wearing sandals or kicking offyour shoes when you’re outside,be sure to protect the tops of yourfeet with sunscreen. Feet are oftenoverlooked when it comes to sunprotection, so slather up—headto toes.

COF andNEIGHBORHOOD

DISCOVERIESThe Statue of Liberty is one of

the most famous and belovedlandmarks in the world. Here are10 fun facts I bet you didn’tknow.

• Her spiky hat is symbolic. Each of the seven spikes onher crown represents theseven oceans and the sevencontinents of the world. Thisis said to represent theuniversal concept of liberty. It’s not only about fashion!

• She is actually French. Herhead even spent some timein Paris at the World’s Fairbefore it was given as a gift tocelebrate the centenary of theAmerican Revolution and thefriendship between the twocountries.

• The statue served as alighthouse. If you werethinking she has no use andis just a big hunk of metal, think again, she actuallyserved as a lighthouse, guiding ships and sailorshome after a long trip onthe ocean.

• Her head isn’t on properly! In 1982, people discoveredthat the head had actuallybeen installed 2 feet offcenter. Oops!

• In 1916 the statue sufferedminor damages from theGermans, and nobody hasbeen allowed to go into thetorch since.

• Lightning doesn’t striketwice? It is thought that theStatue has actually beenstruck 600 times by lightning... What would you expectfrom a huge monumentmade of metal?

• At the statue’s feet there arebroken shackles symbolizingthe country moving forwardfrom oppression and slavery. Her right foot is forwardtoward a new, free era.

• The statue is green because ofthe oxidation of copper. It’snot paint! The metal isslightly damaged andcorroded.

• Measurements. The girl isn’texactly slim, with a waistlineof 35 foot and a size 879shoe. She really is on thelarger side. Big is beautiful!

• She’s also a Hollywood star. The statue has beendestroyed in IndependenceDay and 10 other movies.
