We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. –Romans 8:28 For those who love God all things work together for good. For those who love God this assurance is real because they know they are called. For those who love God the call to faith, to salvation, to the church is all for God's purpose. Call, when it comes to faith, is everything. And in the Bible call is everywhere. Doz- ens of times throughout Old and New Testaments the call announces our summons to trust God. Call describes the path to faith. It is the constitutional convening of the church, according to Martin Luther's way of thinking: the Spirit calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanc- tifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it united with Jesus Christ in one true faith. Call is the bedrock of our life together as a congregation. All other ground is sinking sand. The spiritually mature pastor knows that when he or she is called to the ministry of word and sacrament in a parish it is not the pastor's call. Never a possession, always a privilege, the call demands passion and assigns responsibility. These are assignments by the Spirit, for the Spirit, undertaken with the Spirit's power. The pastor has no need to ponder whether the place or the time or the setting or the people are all the right ingredi- ents. They are the objects of redemption, not the directors of spiritual progress; they are the primary point of mission, not the necessary conditions for success; all are called to please God, not be pleased by one another. The spiritually mature congregation knows that when it calls a pastor to its midst it is not the congregation's call. The church has no need to second guess the call: never the owner, always the owned, the church is the agent of God's doing, the tool in God's hands, the clay for the divine artist's use. When the church gathers for worship it is because the Spirit has called it to turn from self–centeredness in order to live for the praise of God's glory; to be strengthened by the church's one true sustenance, its gospel; to expect strenuous endeavor in exercise of its call for that gospel's sake; to be dead serious about its call for God's purpose. God's purpose! Can the church be ready to say to its culture, Enough already of your self–absorption! Will the church see God's purpose in ceasing to reflect that culture, to stand instead with Him who emptied himself of everything in order to take the role of a servant? If we love God, yes; if we are called, yes; if we find the good life in that love and in that call, yes! Gary Gilthvedt

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. –Romans 8:28

For those who love God all things work together for good. For those who love God

this assurance is real because they know they are called. For those who love God the call to faith, to salvation, to the church is all for God's purpose.

Call, when it comes to faith, is everything. And in the Bible call is everywhere. Doz-ens of times throughout Old and New Testaments the call announces our summons to trust God. Call describes the path to faith. It is the constitutional convening of the church, according to Martin Luther's way of thinking: the Spirit calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanc-tifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it united with Jesus Christ in one true faith.

The pastor has no need to ponder whether the place or the time or the setting or the people are all the right ingredi-ents.

Will the church see God's purpose

in ceasing to reflect that culture, to stand instead with Him who emptied himself of everything in order to take the role of a servant? If we love God, yes; if we are called, yes; if we find the good life in that love and in that call, yes!

From Pastor Sonja:From Pastor Sonja:From Pastor Sonja:From Pastor Sonja:

6th – 8th Grade Confirmation Program Thanks to all 6th – 8th Confirmation students this year for an engaging, energetic, thought-provoking time with you as we studied the New Testament. I have really appreciated all that you have brought AND I have appreciated your willingness to be the first class in our new model that includes ALL Middle School students, grades 6th through 8th.

And we want to thank all the parents who came and served as Table Parents for Wednesday eve-nings! I know that we were short Table Parents many weeks after Christmas, but we will make adjustments on our sign-up sheets for this next fall to balance out the numbers that we need in the fall and spring. Thank you so much!

That being said, there is an increasing need for all 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Confirmation parents to volunteer some of their time during the year to come and serve as Table Parents on Wednesday nights during Confirmation. A Confirmation Table Parent provides a caring, committed adult in the faith who can come and:

• Engage the youth at your table in caring conversations • Participate weekly with the youth at your table in activities we do as a group, both large and

small. • Be spiritually present with the youth at your table, sharing your faith with them through your

caring presence.

We will be asking parents to sign up to be a Table Parent at least 3 times during the Confirmation year – or if you feel called to be a Table Parent weekly, we would rejoice!!

We look forward to an exciting year in Confirmation Ministry this fall! Parents, watch your mail-boxes for more information this summer!

6th - 8th Grade Confirmation Progress Reports By now, you should have received an updated copy of your Progress Reports outlining your Confir-mation work for this year. If you have not yet completed your memorization work, plan to get to-gether with your Mentor to complete your work. I would like to have all outstanding work com-pleted by June 30. Make sure you obtain and fill out a Mentor card and give to Pastor Sonja. Call or text if you have any questions or concerns. (701-740-5123)

9th Grade Confirmation Progress Reports Progress reports were mailed to the 9th graders the end of May. All outstanding work (sermon notes, service hours, Lenten sermon notes, Route 8) is to be completed by June 30 and given to Pastor Mary. There will be a meeting with 10th graders in the fall before Confirmation Sunday (10/26).

Full-Time Youth Ministries Director Position open at OSLC... At its meeting on Sunday, April 13, 2014, members of our Savior’s Lutheran Church renewed their commitment to mission by unanimously authorizing the church council to proceed with a search for a full-time Youth Ministries Director. Simultaneously, the congregation approved an additional 2014 expenditure of up to $20,000, assuming an August start date. Members are asked to renew their personal commitment to youth ministry and are invited to consider a 2014

increase in their giving to make this possible.

In May we received commitments, above and beyond regular giving, of $10,725 from 18 families! We will continue collecting commitment forms during the month of June. An additional $50 (less than $1 per

week) from 185 families would get us to our goal of $20,000.

OSLC has extended the application deadline and will be accepting applications for the Youth Ministries Director Position until the position is filled.

NWMN Synod Assembly Recap:

Synod Assembly Celebrates Milestones, Commits to Vibrant

Faith Partnership

Over 460 voting members and visi-tors participated in the NW MN Synod Assembly, May 16-17, held in the Olson Forum on the campus of Concordia College, Moohead. “Faith at Home…At Home in Faith,” the assembly theme, was lifted up in the worship services, a stirring keynote address, and a series of “growth groups” held on Saturday afternoon.

Keynoter for the assembly was the Rev. Dr. David W. Anderson of Vibrant Faith Minis-tries, who spoke on “Shepherd of Souls: Faith Formed Through Mentoring Relationships.” The repre-sentative of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Churchwide Organization was a daughter of the synod, Ms. Mikka McCracken. She serves as Program Director, ELCA World Hunger Constituent Engagement and Interpretation. Mikka grew up in the Bemidji area and is the daughter of Pastor Karol and Jim McCracken of New Salem Lutheran Church, Turtle River.

Several milestones for the synod were celebrated, including: • The announcement that the synod goal of $225,000 for the ELCA Malaria Campaign has

been exceeded—one year before the end of the campaign! Ava Aigner, a sixth grader from Faith Lutheran Church of Wolverton, presented a symbolic check for the latest giving total ($264,602.27) to Mikka McCracken, representing the ELCA Churchwide organization.

• A major presentation by the Synod Hunger Table lifting up the synod’s giving of over $500,000 to ELCA Hunger in 2013. Efforts like The Hunger Ride that brought bicycling “Hunger Ambassadors” into a dozen communities across the synod last week, drawing attention to the issue of hunger and how ELCA congregations are addressing it, were also recognized.

• Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota Servant of Christ award recognizing outstanding so-cial ministry efforts at Calvary Lutheran Church of Bemidji. Little Norway Lutheran Church, Fertile, was given the “Holy Cow Award” for highest per-capita gifting to ELCA Hunger, and Gloria Dei Lu-theran Church, Felton, was honored with the “Holy Mackeral Award” for creativity in addressing issues of food insecurity and hunger.

In addition to approving synod budgets for 2014 ($1.815 million) and 2015 ($1.828 million), as well as proposed 2015 synod compensation guidelines, three resolutions were passed. • Resolution #1 gave the assembly’s approval to a proposal for forming a multi-year partner-

ship with Vibrant Faith Ministries to provide training, coaching and resources for helping con-gregations focus on faith formation by caring adults in homes and households.

• Resolution #2 challenges the synod’s congregations, members and friends to give at least $4.75 million toward the $198 million Campaign for the ELCA between 2014 and 2018.

• Resolution #3, a “sense motion” of the assembly, encourages Thrivent Financial to rescind a recently-adopted “neutrality policy” governing the kinds of charities that can receive funds from its Choice Dollars Grant Funds.

Next year’s synod assembly will be at Concordia College, Moorhead, between May 15- 17, 2015, fo-cusing on “creatively imagining God’s promised future” (mission planning), with keynoter Rev. Nancy Nyland, Director for Evangelical Mission in the Indiana-Kentucky Synod. Kenny Dessellier, Kaley Johnson, Carol Svendson, Alex Veer and Pastor Mary attended this year’s assembly as voting members from Our Savior’s. Since our congregation is entitled to send four adult voting members and one youth voting member, please pray about the

possibility of attending on behalf of Our Savior’s at next year’s synod assembly.
