Genomic Selection

as the world largest grass breeder, dlF-triFoliuM is leading the way into the future. recently we have intensified our search for genetic progresses which will bring both faster and better results - for the benefit of the farmer.

traditional plant breeding is a time-consuming and costly process, involving many years of work and often with only small steps forward for each new variety created. in future, this will change with the new technology

Breeding for the future

breeding and testing of new forage varieties takes 13-15 years, when using traditional breeding techniques. each variety needs to be approved in official trials and recommended for use before being added to the dlF mixture portfolio. every year the intensive breeding efforts by dlF-triFoliuM bring new varieties to the market.

the climate in Central & eastern europe varies widely, and as a result varieties need to be both drought and cold tolerant. naturally, the selected varieties produce a high yield of green and dry matter and have a healthy appearance free of diseases.

New improved varieties on the market

called “Genome wide selection” (Gws) – already well-known from cattle breeding. with Gws, a wide selection of new progresses from dlF, will be based on the genetic potential hidden in the plant genome.

the new breeding method utilises the genetic markers, but has nothing to do with GMo. with help from sophisticated software, it gives our grass breeders a possibility to reach new varieties with improvements in several traits both faster and more direct.

Benefits of improved grassland outputGrassland that delivers below its potential has a major impact on farm profitability. the cost can add up to over €500 per ha in reduced animal output from grass. this loss then needs to be covered by purchased concentrates.

10% increase in yield or quality of grassland can give a corresponding 35% increase in animal output. as the table below illustrates, a 20% increase in dry matter yield combined with a 10% higher feeding value from improved grass, results in an increased output potentially of 2,550 litre milk per cow, hence 2,000€/ha. therefore the return on investment in grass selection and management is extremely beneficial and helps overall farm profitability.

Grass feeding value – the key to more milk or meatGrass species have different properties – some are preferred for their high yield potential, some for persistency and others again for their excellent feeding value. in the table you can see an overview of the main traits to be considered when selecting grass species.

the recent years have been spent by improving yield and disease resistance, but a main goal today is also to improve the feed value and especially the digestibility of the fibre component. the breeders at dlF are focused on producing varieties of grass with improved forage quality, in particular those with high cell wall digestibility - dndF.

Fibre is one of the main reasons for feeding grass to ruminants, but it can be indigestible, locking up valuable nutrients.

you can increase feed intake and livestock production, which

makes a significant difference to your budget.

research suggests a 10% improvement in fibre digestibility can uplift milk production by 6.4%, while reducing nitrogen release to the environment by 4.9%. this is a real target for the future.

Clover and Festulolium improves milk productiontrials at dlF-triFoliuM support the development of new ForageMax mixtures with special focus on the protein supply.

at our four main testing sites in europe, located in France, the netherlands, uk, and denmark, a large number of grass-clover combinations have been examined over the past years.

Clover and festulolium give you:•More than 2 tonnes protein per hectare. this quantity can

almost replace the same amount of concentrate which has to be bought at commercial prices.

•Up to 250 kg nitrogen for free. this can be utilised by the grasses in the field and it saves costs for bagged nitrogen.

•higher feed intake by animals. typically the increase in intake is 10-20% for grazing animals and for silage similar figures can be achieved.

•higher summer production. white clover and varieties of festulolium, of the tall fescue type, have higher mid-season production than ryegrass.

•Overcoming drought. red clover and festulolium have very deep root systems and maintain production in dry periods.

•Better crop rotation. a legume grass field adds value in a rotation with cereals adding nitrogen and an improved soil structure.

Einar Lepiste, agronomist for Central Estonia reports:“i have successfully used dlF-triFoliuM’s ForageMax mixtures for producing silage for more than seven years now.

as part of the land is drought-sensitive, the CutMax alfa protein mixture is most suitable for growing there, ensuring a normal harvest, even in dry years.

with this seed mixture i establish new grassland on approx. 50 ha every year. the fields are sown down for a four year period. thus, we continuously use up to 200 ha of grassland created with this mixture. in an average year, i get four cuts of silage.

in the case of CutMax alfa protein, early spring sowing is important and conservation is done with the silage additive aiv. the quality of silage has always been very good”.

Overseeding pays offThin fields yield too littlein a recent study in ireland it was proven what is well-known to grassland farmers: if there is a lack of plants in a grass-field there is also a lack of yield.

on a scale from 0-5 for visual ground score, where 5 is the desired plant cover, the annual loss of yield was 1.9 ton dry matter per hectare (from 12.2 to 10.3) when the ground score went from 3.4 to 1.5. the largest differences in dry matter yield occurred during the spring period. every unit increase in the ground score at the end of the grazing season was associated with an increase of 1,194 kg dry matter per hectare.

9 % higher yield from overseedingtrials conducted in 2014 at hooibeekhoeve, the official test Centre in province antwerp, belgium, showed 9 % higher yield in the first 2014 cut after overseeding in october 2013 with a mixture of five varieties of perennial ryegrass in a relatively open old grassfield.

Some definitions:

Overseeding: introducing grass and/or clover seed into an already existing sward. seed can be either broadcast or slot seeded into the existing field.

timing is crucial when overseeding: soil temperature and moisture must be adequate to ensure fast germination. large seeded species are the best choice.

seedbed preparations must be accurate: ploughing, harrowing and packing or rolling before and after seeding ensures the best results with an adequately moist topsoil and an optimal seeding depth of 1 cm.

Discover the value of reseedingMore milk per ha from young grass in a typical grass field the yield decreases with the age of the sward. this is a natural consequence of climate, intensive use and the ageing of plants. weed grasses, after time, take over from the highly productive sown species and varieties. reseeding is the most effective way of renewing grassland – and the investment is normally repaid many times.

Cost/benefit when reseeding:• the value of forage from a young grass field is typically

around € 1,200 – 1,400/ha. • a drop in yield due to ageing of the field, traffic etc. of 10%

per year is not unusual.• replacing a low productive field by reseeding, for example

every third year at a cost of € 100 per ha, gives a high return on investment.

the costs involved in establishing a new ley are often considered to be high. however, this is not the case if you compare with e.g. the other popular forage crop, maize silage. even if the grass field is being used only for one or two years, the costs for establishing the field (seedbed preparation, sowing and seed) are still lower for grass than for maize silage.

Furthermore, if you take into account that the lifetime of a grass field often is much longer than two years the costs of establishment become a very small part of the total price for grass forage.

For beef cattlebeef cattle (cow and calf) need forage for two purposes: 1) Maintaining weight and health of the cow. 2) production of milk for a calf. the animals will typically stay on grass from spring until autumn and the calves will after some time start eating forage as well. the grass field will often be used for both grazing and cutting as the winter forage (silage or hay) must be produced from the same area.

dlF-triFoliuM’s mixtures for beef production are composed to meet these demands:• yield and digestibility are obtained from ryegrass,

Selecting the right grass for beef cattle, sheep and horses

For sheep sheep are ruminants like cattle and have the same demands for grassland; it must deliver nutrition for growth and milk production as well as fibre for the processes in the rumen. however, sheep differ from cows in the way they graze – the bites taken by sheep are very close to the ground, and consequently the grass and clover species used must be able to tolerate grazing at low height.

these species are perennial ryegrass, smooth-stalked meadow-grass, red fescue and small leaved white clover, so they must be part of a mixture for sheep. on the other hand, there is normally also a demand for species that will deliver a good crop of hay or silage. this job will be done by species such as Festulolium, Cocksfoot and timothy.Choose the best grass for your sheep - be inspired at page 14-15

For horseshorses are mono gastric animals and have a different way of utilising grass than cattle and sheep. today most horses are used only for pleasure and not intended to do hard work. the feeding must be planned according to this, but also with respect to the type of horse in question. Many breeds of horses and ponies are native and are not used to high production ryegrasses which may cause illness such as laminitis.

this means that a medium to high content of fibre (cellulose) in the grasses is important, and that species like Festulolium of tall fescue type, Cocksfoot and red fescue will be preferred partners in a mixture for grazing horses. at the same time, horses are “hard” grazers as they bite very close to the ground and wear from hooves can be quite substantial causing long term damage. to some extend this can be prevented by using species like smooth-stalked meadow-grass and red fescue in the mixture.Choose the best grass for your horses - be inspired at page 14-15
