Friday 21st November Evening Workshop

Blackrock Observatory Cork

Astronomy— Earth and Space

Join us in the Blackrock Observatory in Cork for a workshop on Earth and Space suitable for TY on Friday November 21st from 7pm to 9pm. Tea/Coffee will be available from 6.30pm.

This workshop will cover making models of motorised asteroids and simple rockets. The use

of online resources to teach about space will be demonstrated. Ideas for lessons will also be

given.

PDST/Scientix National Conference For Science Teachers

Workshops provided on the day include:

Practical Physics for the Non Physics Specialist Teacher

This workshop is aimed at junior science teachers who would like a chance to increase their practical and theoretical

knowledge of physics experiments and demonstrations.

Energy

CASTEL in conjunction with SEI will offer a workshop on energy. Lesson plans and worksheets will be available for

teachers at this workshop.

Practical Chemistry - Ideas for Experiments and Demonstrations

This workshop will outline ideas for chemistry experiments and demonstrations that teachers who are not

chemistry specialists can do with their classes.

Nanotechnology in your Classroom - Crann TCD

This workshop will show how basic concepts in nanoscience can be incorporated into your everyday classroom teaching using simple activities and demonstrations.

Cooperative Learning in Biology

A repeat of the Autumn workshop in Biology for those that did not receive a place on the original course.

Road Safety Authority An introduction to the RSA 100 hour teaching unit which could be used with TY students. Lesson plans and

teaching resources have been developed by the RSA to support this course. The four units are Personal Safety &

Responsibility, Killer Behaviours, Science, Technology & Engineering and Road Traffic Collision.

Robotics Workshop

This workshop will give you an opportunity to create and take away sample programmes used to control and program the microchip using “Genie Design Studio” software which is freely available. This is a basic introductory course and no prior knowledge of control technology, or programming is necessary. It will be useful for teachers considering a TY module on Robotics.

This course is aimed at all Ag Science teachers, both new and experienced, to

enable you to experience a selection of ag science experiments in all topics .

There will be over 20 experiments available on the day covering all topics. Examples include:

Soil to include soil texture, cation exchange in soil and pH testing

Plant Physiology to include the use of a clinostat, potometer and a refractometer

Ecology to include classification of plants and botanical composition of a permanentpastures

Microbiology to include silage and presence of bacteria in root nodules

Animal Physiology to include dissections

A genetics input will be given by Dr. Tom Harrington of the University of Limerick

A live dissection of monogastric and ruminant digestive systems will be performed. This

session will be recorded and a DVD will be made available to participants that attend this

session. Commentary on the dissection and how it relates to the Ag Science course will also
