RELIEVING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
As I write this we are well into term 1 and as usual Forbes High School has been a hive of activity since I wrote my last newsletter back in Week 3. Recently the school has hosted a number of highly successful events that promote our PBL values (Responsible, Respectful, Honest and Doing your Best!) and personal growth in our students.
Our swimming carnival was held on Friday 23rd
February with perfect weather setting the scene for a highly successful day. The house colours were on display for all to see with students from Gamilaroi (Green), Burrabinya (Red), Nguri (Blue) and Wiradjuri (Yellow) proudly and loudly backing their houses with banners, t - shirts, flags, wigs, face paint and hats creating a sea of varying colours. This early sign bode well for a successful and highly energised day. We would not be disappointed!! The races were well supported with students from all houses and the points started flowing into the expert scoring team. From the get go it was clear that the mighty green machine of Gamilaroi was keen to do well with students in green making up the majority of student’s in most races.
A real highlight of the day was the ‘Chant off!’ between the houses across the swimming pool; many students would have gone home with croaky voices after some amazingly passionate chants about their houses. Students gained house points not only for competing but also for displaying house spirit on the day and taking part in novelty events. It was commented by many students, parents and students alike that it was one of the best swimming carnivals they had been to. In the end it was Gamilaroi that reigned supreme and was testament to that fact that participation and passion were the keys to their success an excellent and well deserved win, Nguri, Burrabinya and Wiradjuri you have foreseen the future and it is GREEN!!!!
It is an excellent measure of the work we are doing in school to build house pride and raising the focus of school spirit in day to day organisation such as having students sitting in house groups for school muster and assemblies. This will be further pushed in our next three year Strategic Plan. Watch this space!!
On a more serious note we held our first Cyber Safety Presentations on Tuesday 20th
February. This was delivered our School Liaison Police Officer Craig Skene; he spoke to all of our Year 7 students about being safe online and cyber bullying. This is the third year we have run this program and during the year Craig will provide a presentation to every student at FHS. Year 8 will have their Cyber Safety Presentation on Tuesday 20
th March and Year 9 in term 2.
Years 10, 11, and 12 will have presentations by Craig during terms 3 and 4. Craig also takes the time to get out into the playground and mix with the students.
As I sit here we are preparing for a visit from five high schools who are taking part in our Wellness Hub Presentation Day, that we run once a term for schools interested in learning about the Wellness Hub and how it is supporting the students of FHS. They will be given a tour of the Wellness Hub; will have a presentation from key stakeholders from FHS, the Local Health Service and NGO’s. There will also be a Q & A session where staff from other schools can delve into the process and issues faced by FHS in the establishment of the Wellness Hub. Our HSC Hospitality students are catering for the day and will be another opportunity to shine! Lastly we continue building strong links with our partner primary schools through our Lachlan Enrichment and Engagement Program (LEEP). Next week we will host 20 stage 2 students and 21 stage 3 students who will be taking part in a day of lessons tailored to their interest in Science and Mathematics. I look forward to welcoming these young students to our school and share the exciting experiences and opportunities open to them at Forbes High School. Thank you for taking the time to read my report, if I have raised issues you would like to discuss further with the school, please contact the school to allow us to clarify any questions you may have.

SWIMMIING CARNIVAL SUCCESS Forbes High School held their annual swimming carnival on Friday 23 February. The day was a huge success, with many students participating on the day and challenging themselves to do their best. What was evident though was the school spirit on the day and the house leader’s enthusiasm to encourage all students to do their best and get involved. Our senior students rocked on the day and led by example going in all events. Well done Year 12! Helping to create a positive day out was our dedicated and caring staff, who like many of the students didn’t mind getting into the school spirit with students in their house. A big thank you though must go to Mrs Morrison our Sports Coordinator who did a fantastic job on the day, ensuring we had a smooth running carnival with lots of fun!

The burger itself appears to be nothing special. A
seaweed bun with lettuce,tomato,cheese, pickles,
mustard, ketchup and patty. What makes this
burger special is the Krabby Patty.
The Krabby Patty is truly the jewel of the menu.
Sponge Bob personally delivered my meal, fresh
and hot. The Kelp rings were crispy and not too
salty, the Kelp shake was deceivingly sweet not
salty. The Krabby Patty is truly the jewel of the
menu.
The patty was distinctively flavoured of crab meat,
celery, onion, thyme, mustard, mayonnaise and
ketchup. There is a secret ingredient in the patty
itself which has made the Krabby Patty famous.
With each bite your taste buds are treated to a
delightful sensation of textures and flavour. It
certainly is the very best burger I have tasted.
The food is worth the poor service provided by the
cashier. The restaurant owner Mr Eugene H Krab
has built a reputation as a money hungry
business mogul, yet he has never let the quality of
the Krabby Patty waiver.
The Krusty Krab is worth a visit. I will be back with
my family and friends.

YEAR 7 FOOD TECH (MANDATORY) This term in Technology, Year 7 are studying Food with a special focus on design and experimentation. We started the year with a blind tasting and mock apple pies. We have then followed up by studying restaurants and especially reviews by journalists (both positive and negative). Students were then tasked with researching a restaurant and finding information about them to help them develop ideas to write a review.
Below is one of the students (Avril) piece of work. - Mr Lickess
The Krusty Krab
Looks can be deceiving, this little establishment is
located at the bottom of the sea, it looks like a
treasure chest and I was certainly surprised to find
their menu contained a jewel of a burger.
The Krusty Krab was founded by Eugene H Krabs. Mr
Krabs began his cooking career as a ships cook. He
developed his secret recipe for the Krabby Patty
which launched his restaurant career.
The restaurant is made to feel like you're on a boat,
the tables are made from ships wheels, the cashier
sits in a lifeboat! The decor certainly makes you feel
like you're at sea. Even though the cashiers attitude is
off putting, he was rude and abrupt, the locals
continue to flood back for the food.
Sponge Bob Square Pants, the little fry cook, is quirky
and fun. His effervescent enthusiasm reflects his love
for his work. His attitude makes up for the cashiers
bad attitude. I was given the impression Squidward
would rather be anywhere else than working at the
Krusty Krab. The banter between Sponge Bob and
Squidward lightens the mood and makes for an
entertaining side show.
The menu is simple with limited choices. I selected
the Krabby Patty with a side of Kelp rings and a Kelp
shake. This is not an establishment for fine dining, but
the food looked and smelt delicious and my tastebuds
were anxiously awaiting the first bite.

AGRICULTURAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS OVER THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS My name is Chloe and in the summer holidays I went to the 2018 Santa Gertrudis National Youth Camp in Warwick Qld for a week. On Monday night my mum Rebecca, my brother Jack and myself arrived in Warwick. For the first night we stayed in a motel. On Tuesday we drove around Warwick and then headed out to the polocrosse ground and met up with Greg and Nadine Moxey. While there, I led my bull down to the wash bay to clean him up and prepare for week ahead. My bulls name is Dangal Nitro. After we washed the cattle we put them in the yards. We then headed up to dinner where we were put in to groups and provided with the numbers that we had to wear all the time while we were at the camp. On Wednesday we had to get up at 5:30am and feed and water our cows, then have breakfast before we got in to our groups and headed to the cattle. Once there we had a safety talk about the cattle. After lunch we were placed in our groups and provided the opportunity to get to know our group and group leaders. Thursday morning we were up again at 5:30am watering and feeding our cattle. After breakfast we had a talk about feedlot cattle and prime cattle, and then we had to judge feedlot cattle and prime cattle. After lunch we had to judge bulls all afternoon and then fed and water our cattle again. After dinner we had a farm challenge, which involved a sprint race where we had to carry a bale of hay, then get an apple out with your teeth in water and finish with a wheelbarrow race. Friday was my last day of judging. I got my bull ready for paraders and my bull came in 4th in the 14 year old. My bull also came third in his overall class. In the final presentation I came 3rd in the 13 to 18 year old junior judging. Saturday we packed up and headed home. I would like to thank Dennis and Gale Moxey and Greg and Nadine Moxey for the cattle and my mum for taking us. This as a fantastic experience!

INTERNATIONAL DAIRY WEEK On the 17th January I had the opportunity to travel to International Dairy Week in Tatura VIC with Steve and Rachel Eagles. I would like to really express my appreciation and thanks to them for taking me. It was a very busy week, up early every morning and late to bed, always each day bringing fun and laughter. I gained a lot of knowledge from Dairy Week as a judge with what to look for in a heifer such as; a nice straight topline, good spring of rib, the way they track (walk), their pasterns and feet and a lot more in a nice milker. We had to wash, clip and prepare them ready for the show ring. In the Youth Show the heifer I led was placed second in her class by the judge as he thought she was a well completed heifer. The junior handlers class had a whopping 45 children from all over Australia and some international competitors in my age group and I managed to get 20th which I was very happy with. Kyle Bolam and I also competed in the Youth Team challenge that involved each team consisting of 10 children aged 8-21yrs that had to complete clipping a heifer, judging heifers and paraders. Kyle and I paraded heifers and our team came 3rd overall. It was a fantastic week away in which we learnt a lot about dairy cattle showing, had fun and met new friends.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT BOOKS All students should now have received their assessment books for the year. This helps our students to be prepared, have time to manage their studies, and help them be successful learners during their time at Forbes High School. It is important that students hand in their assessments on time. One way parents/ carers can help with this is to have a weekly check in with your child, and just see how they are going and if they need any assistance. The assessment booklets are available on our school website for families to access as well. Please remember, if you have any questions about your child’s assessments throughout the year, just contact your child’s teacher and have a chat to clarify any concerns or questions. We are more than happy to help out anyway we can.

LANGUAGES NETWORKING CONFERENCE On Thursday the 22nd February, I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to Sydney for The Virtual Languages Mentoring Network Conference. The Mentoring Network covered the cost of my transport, hotel stay and food expenses which was fantastic. The conference was held at Sydney’s luxurious Holiday Inn Airport Hotel. I am very grateful to Forbes High School for granting me this TPL and I plan to implement everything I learnt at the conference. Day one of the conference involved working with a mentor to explore issues around workload and time management. We also came up with ways and strategies to maximise the time and energy spent on school work. After a lovely lunch, we listened to Shanelle talk about how to engage students and the wider school community in languages and education through advocacy and student engagement. We also spent a significant amount of time working in language-specific groups and had the chance to share teaching and learning strategies that successfully engage students in language class. The teachers and I had to use our new learning from the earlier sessions to critique and improve existing activities and resources while conceptualising new ones. The second day of the conference focused on effective feedback. This concept comes from the work of educator James Nottingham, and explores the decisive role of feedback in learning and development, and how clearly defined learning goals can lead to more effective and productive feedback to students. In the second session, we worked in mentor groups to evaluate assessment tasks used previously. I was asked to lead a group discussion with my fellow French teachers focusing on learning goals, intentions and positivity. Another interesting task that we undertook was the moderation exercise. Working in groups, we all moderated marking of student writing samples and discussed similarities/ differences in teacher judgement. It was interesting to see how inconsistencies might be addressed and what feedback could be provided to students. Each participant had to model best- practice teaching and share our resources for quality language teaching. This was an extensive, enriching and
valuable TPL experience that was highly rewarding and I look forward to bringing this knowledge back to our school.

EVERYONE2DAY Why is regular attendance at school important? Regular school attendance will help your child to succeed in later life. Attending school every day makes learning easier for your child and helps build and maintain friendships with other children. If your child misses learning the basic skills in the early years of primary or high school, they may develop learning problems in later years. • 1 day off a week = 10 days a term (2weeks - gone!) • 1 day off a week over the period of 1 year = most of 1 term - gone!! • If this pattern starts in Kindergarten and continues through to Year 6 almost 1 and a half years of learning is gone!! • If this pattern continues through high school students will miss nearly three years of learning. • If students miss days of learning they reduce the chance of achieving to their academic potential. Help us to ensure your child can unlock their
full potential!

TELL THEM FROM ME- STUDENTS This term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 12 March and 13 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey will be sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.
The consent form and FAQs are available in 23 languages.
