Q Tell us about your new appointment and what it means to you.

A I really like to work in an environment where creative and innovative solutions are born. During the last few years Forbo has continued to invest in their carpet tile manufacturing technology to ensure it is state of the art. While the Textile design & Product Management team have delivered a versatility of design, construction and formats across the Tessera and Westbond brands that consistently reflects trends in offices.

Q You mention office trends – what do you see currently happening in office environments?

A The workplace is changing, perhaps more rapidly than ever before. There are four key trends that form our inspiration for new product design and solutions. Flexibility and agility are key. Designing the workplace to be flexible and agile can facilitate higher densities of occupation, increase space utilisation and ultimately provide more efficient buildings. This will be achieved by clever use of space and bespoke solutions

that reflect the activities of the organisation and have the ability to evolve together with the users needs. Also design is becoming more important: offices are getting a noticeable creativity boost. This serves a higher objective: innovative energy needs social friction in a creative environment. Employees value good workspace. As we all become increasingly design conscious and spend longer periods at work, the quality of our workplace is of greater value to us. An organisation’s ability to attract and retain the very best people will be increasing linked to the environment it is

able to provide. Design of healthy buildings and interiors – providing spaces that are healthy with ambient elements of the environment that support health, including air quality, temperature, lighting, and acoustics. Incorporating wellness in the physical workplace (e.g. fitness, yoga, and quiet rooms). Focusing on movement or physical activity and how design can motivate more of it (E.g. visible stairs and centrally located common areas) and having access to natural views and bringing nature into the built environment all contribute to a happier, better engaged and more productive workforce.

Q How do these translate to Forbo’s product & design development?

A All elements of office trends come back in our product and design initiatives. The best example is our latest collection called Synergy. This is especially made for the office segment. It offers a seamless transition across carpet tile & luxury vinyl tile; two different products with a common design direction, in modular formats and with the same quick & cost effective installation method (tackifier). There are three new and unique designs in carpet tiles & loose lay luxury vinyl tiles offering almost endless combination possibilities as everything works together.

Q What was the design process for Synergy?

A For this development we have had a unique collaboration between our textile and vinyl design teams. The goal was to create a totally new design proposal in which the two products work together side by side, and equally as well when used individually. After having identified the key design trends in both carpet tiles and vinyl and matching them with major workspace trends, each design team shared their proposals then worked together in the final design stages to produce Synergy – a unique collection achieved by combining very different processes.

Forbo Synergy offers huge scope for creating stunning floor designs due to its modular format, varied functionality and exciting textures and colourways. The collection consists of three design elements which combine texture and colour with specific shapes. From the linearity of 'Seagrass' in a plank format, to the vivid 'Hybrid', highly textured in Tessera, available in a large format rectangular tile, and finally to the understated 'Marble' as a traditional square, Forbo Synergy opens up a whole new world of design possibilities. Each of these three elements is complemented by pure colour from the Tessera Clarity range.

There's more to Synergy than just innovative texture and formats. The collection also offers the varied functionality needed in all modern

offices. Tessera carpet tiles are the obvious choice where acoustics and underfoot comfort are desired, and the maintenance and durability properties of Allura Flex vinyl tiles make it ideal for those areas subject to occasional food and drink spillages, or a high incidence of wheeled traffic.

As all Synergy products are easily installed using the same tackifier, and can be used directly next to each other without the need for transition strips, additional profiles, or inconvenient and expensive build-up of the sub-floor, the offer is as convenient as it is beautiful.

THE FORBO BRAND COMES ALIVE IN CLERKENWELLTim Pope, describes how his design knowledge and experience was key to upgrading Forbo's profile in the area as well as improving the customer experience in our EC1 showroom.

Q How did the Forbo Showroom refurbishment come about and what, for you, is the main goal?

A I am one of the founders of PWW. We set up the consultancy 12 years ago and work on all aspects of design, design thinking and branding. We spoke directly to Chris, the Forbo Showroom manager, and approached Angus, the General Manager, via Linkedin to discuss a collaboration between us, ON&ON shelving systems and Forbo Flooring Systems to help create something new at Clerkenwell Design Week.

We saw an opportunity to improve the showroom on several levels but the main objective was to set a new standard for Forbo, improving overall performance, awareness and further engagement with your customers. Our starting point was spent understanding the customer mindset, sales process and Forbo's product ranges. We then

used these insights to help build a foundation for the showroom concept. During this stage we were really surprised to understand the breadth and quantity of products produced by Forbo in the UK and wanted this to be one of the main points to communicate.

Our aim was to make the emphasis of the showroom around the product ranges and to create a system that would help communicate theses ranges rather than just display samples.

Q How important was it to you to improve the product presentation itself?

A In order to create something that works correctly or is successful it’s important to consider all aspects of an environment. So not just the look and feel of a space but functional aspects as well to help drive behaviour. ON&ON have created a very

Q What other exciting project are you working on?

A We tend to work with multinational companies and projects can be ongoing but individual projects can take over a year or more to complete. We are currently finishing several GSK projects here and in North America. One of which is a 15,000 sqft shopper and consumer research facility within GSK’s new headquarters in New Jersey. We’ve been working on this for over a year designing the environments, identity and communications, it will be launching at the end of May this year.

innovative shelving system: they produce shelves up to 5 metres in length but can also be made to measure. It was a perfect fit using the shelving and shelving components to help display Forbo's product ranges in the best possible way and their aesthetic is also simple and uncomplicated and so would not detract from the ranges and samples on display.

A There are many showrooms that create a very white, minimal and stark museum like experience. We saw that it was important not to follow this but find the correct solution that Forbo could begin to own, to move away from white and to help differentiate Forbo from other manufacturers. We helped provide direction for the displays by trying to cut and consolidate what Forbo displays in the showroom, so we have suggested categorising their products in a simpler way, similar to their online ranges and to talk more about the ranges rather than specific colours or finishes.

IN CONVERSATIONwith Alex Gordon

Alex shares with the readers of ArchEdition, the highs and (not so many) lows of her typical day as Key Account Manager Hospitality and Leisure at Forbo Flooring Systems.

Alex explains how a recent project provided the formula for fun at Brewers Fayre

National pub-restaurant chain, Brewers Fayre, is incorporating two of Forbo Flooring Systems’ high quality floor coverings at the heart of its current refurbishment project to update its children’s play areas. The family dining brand has commissioned a bespoke Flotex Vision design inspired by The Beano to create a series of vibrant recreation spaces across the country for its younger guests to enjoy.

Flotex offers a completely unique flooring solution in that it combines the hardwearing and durable characteristics of a resilient

floor with the warmth and comfort of a textile covering. It is the only truly washable textile flooring product on the market and is strong, hygienic and totally waterproof, making it ideal for indoor activity areas where children eat and play.

Flotex Vision offers a wide range of design options, allowing for any image to be replicated through digital printing. There are 500 options to choose from in the Flotex online digital library, from realistic images of natural materials such as a pebble beach to a contemporary floral design.

As Brewers Fayre already had a well- established partnership with The Beano, choosing a bespoke Beano design for the flooring in its play areas was an obvious extension to continue its partnership and to provide families with a fun and engaging experience.

translated into beautiful flooring, and since embarking on a huge renovation on my home I am also looking for inspiration myself.

Q What have you been working on recently?

A I have also been busy working on a number of bespoke projects, including a custom vinyl HD print for a group of Sports Cafés at a well known holiday destination and a new Brewers Fayre ‘Play At’ scheme in a Beano design printed on

Q Describe the day ahead?

A My day began by catching the 6.30am train into London, whilst not unusual today is quite different as I’m off to our showroom in Clerkenwell to meet with our Dutch designers to preview and discuss the new Marmoleum collections for 2017.

It’s all very top secret and incredibly exciting, however, I’m sure if you twist my arm I may give you a clue!

Q What do you like about your daily work routine?

A This is the part of my job that I love the most, looking at key trends and seeing them

and E Coli, as well as preventing the development of stale odours.

“Forbo’s Flotex was the obvious choice for our children’s play areas,” said Josie Baldwin, Marketing Manager at Brewers Fayre who managed the roll out of the ‘Play At’ refurbishment project. “The eye-catching, tailor made design coupled with the comfort and durability of the product has enabled us to provide a bright, fun environment for our younger guests that is also safe and hygienic in a food and drink establishment.”

Brewers Fayre has also installed Forbo's Surestep wood floor covering in Seagrass in their refurbished units, which offers a guaranteed lifetime slip resistance.

Flotex in their Children’s play areas. Whilst these projects can be challenging, the sense of achievement on completion is very fulfilling.

Q What's the most difficult part of your day?

A Thankfully I missed the worst part of my job today, traffic jams! So tonight I’ll be contemplating design schemes for my house, I’ll probably watch a crime drama with my husband and my house bunnies (their favourite is Criminal Minds!)

CREATING BETTER ENVIRONMENTS

The UK-GBC has launched a new task group ‘Better Homes for People’ which focuses on enhancing the health and well-being in the residential sector and we are excited to announce that Forbo, as an active member of the UK-GBC, is a member of this Task group.

The UK Green Building Council, part of the World Green BuildingCouncil, campaigns for a sustainable built environment. The objective is to influence both Governmental and individual members' sustainability performance. It is clear that buildings have a material impact on the health, well-being and productivity of occupants – one of the findings of the 2014 report produced by the GBC entitled Health, Wellbeing& Productivity in Offices. The report also affirmed people and planet benefits can also be achieved.

We all have some knowledge of the impacts (mainly physical) that our homes have on us – are they too hot or too cold? Is the ventilation adequate or does this cause moulds that can contribute to asthma?

What we are perhaps not aware of is the impact of materials that we can’t see or feel, for example Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that are released, from furniture, paints and flooring for example. These are the types of questions that the task group will seek to respond to.

This body of work that the UK-GBC is developing (other sectors will follow in due course) is complementary to our own Committed To The Health Of One programme, whereby people’s health, wellbeing and safety is the focus – Forbo has already targeted issues such as airborne allergens. Our Flotex range which is made from nylon fibres capture allergens and fine dust from the air, all of which are then effortlessly released to standard cleaning appliances – which is why Flotex has been awarded the prestigious Allergy UK Seal of Approval along with Marmoleum which, if cleaned correctly won’t harbour dust mites contributing to an improved indoor environment for all.

Mark Bauer, Forbo Flooring UK, Environment Specialist, is a memberof the Task Group that is compiling the report, comments “It would be too simplistic to expect such a diverse group to focus on the issues that we face as a flooring manufacturer, but that said there are a number of important outputs that should drive our future sustainabledevelopment. Focus will be centred on a number of aspects namely mental health, lifestyle, social interaction, management, resilience, physical and comfort. Understanding how products contribute both positively and negatively to these outputs is a key learning point. Therefore, one of our key challenges is to wrap these into a metrics framework that we can use to measure, benchmark and improveperformance”.

FLEXIBLE & MODULAR – ALLURA FLEX 0.55

Everyone wants quick, flexible and modular solutions which are recyclable*, hence Allura Flex is one of Forbo’s fasted growing products. Installed loose, only using a non-permanent adhesive, 100% recyclable* and suitable for heavy use commercial offices, Allura Flex 0.55 looks to go beyond traditional designs choices and gives designers more options than before.

The diversity of shapes reflects a current trend in ceramic tiles to have huge XXL format tiles, while shorter planks have seen a comeback of the Herringbone effect, first seen in parquet floors in the 16th Century.

Multi-pattern mixes reflect the move away from the single pack mind set – there is nothing stopping the mixing and matching of both different plank widths, lengths and colours to maximise visual impact.

While colour/natural combinations provide colour pops which are being seen more and more in interiors and can be taken up the walls and onto surfaces providing a coherent effect. Stained wood delivers convincing vintage effects and a refined interpretation of colours.

The dislike of using a ‘fake’ product has dulled somewhat in response to the flexibility that today’s technology can provide.

As demand for flexibility & modularity continues to grow globally, we explore some of the recent trends which are influencing colour, design & format.

Loose lay is also a revelation as more and more spaces become multipurpose and subject to change in terms of usage. Forbo’s design team works across resilient and textile product categories to open the door even wider as tiles can then be seamlessly installed side by side introducing different textures and light reflectance into the mix.

Not confined to a single sector it would seem that the sky’s the limit as far as Allura Flex is concerned as the forecast for growth up until 2018 continues to be extremely strong.

ARCHEDITION 17

WINNER 2015/16 Nicoll Russell Studios

Q When was this project started and completed?

A Nicoll Russell Studios won an Architectural competition in early 2012 to design a visitor centre for the Kelpies sculptures in Falkirk which were conceived by renowned sculptor Andy Scott. The visitor centre project went through a lengthy process of design development and the main phase of works were completed on site last year with the building opening to the public in late October 2015.

Q What was the design objective for this project?

A The design objective was to create welcoming support facilities for people visiting the Kelpies and the broader Helix

Park, where people could sit in comfort at all times of year and enjoy prime views of the sculptures. In addition to the Café facility, the centre also includes an interpretative exhibition space, a welcome and retail area, visitor toilets and staff accommodation.

Q Why did you specify Forbo for the floor coverings of the centre?

A There was a lot of discussion with the Client about the floor finish and initially we contemplated having an exposed concrete finish. The Client group had concerns that this might feel hard, industrial and potentially unwelcoming. We then embarked on a process of sourcing alternative options. We have worked with Forbo on several previous projects and were aware of their 'Allura Stone' range which offered

an appearance similar to polished concrete but without the associated drawbacks such as cracking.

Q What Forbo products did you choose for the centre (and why) and in what colourways?

A There are Forbo products used throughout the building. The entrance matting inside the main entrance door is Forbo Nuway with Coral Anthracite inserts. The main public area is finished using Forbo's 50x50cm Allura Stone luxury vinyl tiles in three different colourways including Grigio Concrete, Charcoal Concrete and Natural Concrete. The colours were chosen to blend in with the granite paving of the plaza in front of the centre. The tiles were laid in a pattern that has an empathy with the external

paving whilst also echoing the patterns of the stainless steel cladding panels on the Kelpies.

In the visitor orientation area only a single colour was used to avoid competing with the exhibition and that effectively created the impression of a smooth concrete floor. Rear of house and staff spaces feature Forbo Surestep safety flooring with a grey 'Mercury' colourway chosen to tie in with the colour palette used elsewhere.

Q Did you come across any problems

that Forbo helped you overcome?

A There weren't any significant issues although we did look at just about every different possible finish and Laura Birrell of Forbo was very helpful and patient and must have brought us a sample of just about every product in the entire Forbo range.

Q What’s your overall opinion of the project?

A Overall both ourselves and the clients are very pleased with the finished project and it's

already doing very good business, so much so that there has been talk of potentially extending the building to cope with the large numbers of visitors to the Kelpies throughout the Summer months.

Frank Whittle Partnership for the Urgent Care Centre, Chorley Hospital

David Simmons, Interior Designer at Frank Whittle Partnership, designed the Urgent Care Centre and said: “We wanted to create a stimulating and vibrant environment for the patients and staff of the hospital and one that they would be proud of. A range of Forbo’s floor coverings were specified for the project including Eternal and its digitally printed vinyl, as the vibrant colours and the ability to create bespoke designs fitted the brief perfectly.

“In the children’s waiting areas, we chose to have an underwater scene of colourful, tropical fish printed onto Forbo’s digitally printed vinyl. This created a playful environment for the children to enjoy,

in what could be a traumatic or upsetting time of their lives.”

David continued: “As well as installing bright colours of Eternal in the wards and rooms, we also interspersed blocks of bright colours throughout the waiting areas. These colours matched colours used in rooms on the wards as well as the reception desks and other furniture.”

“We are very pleased with the overall design of the hospital and we were very fortunate to have a forward-thinking client that was brave enough to embrace the colourful design scheme.” A

The patients and staff of Chorley Hospital’s Urgent Care Centre can view the colourful life of the ocean’s coral beds, thanks to Forbo Flooring Systems’ digitally printed vinyl floor covering. This unique flooring design helped the interior designer at Frank Whittle Partnership win a highly commended award in the Fly Forbo 2015/2016 competition.

Using Forbo Flooring Systems’ Allura Stone range, the architects were able to create a welcoming interior, while reflecting the abstract designs of the world’s largest equine sculptures – which helped the project win the 2016 Fly Forbo competition.

NOISE POLLUTION!Forbo Sarlon is the perfect solution

Acoustic problems are endemic in many interior spaces – from educational establishments to workplaces. Noise is caused by people, machines or outdoor activities. We at Forbo have many ways to diffuse excess sound down to an acceptable level. Garry Bateman, Head of Technical Services answers an often asked acoustic question.

Q Can you tell me how my choice of floor coverings can help create a quieter learning environment across my university campus?

A AUDE’s 2015 report states that on average a university estate is 100,000m² and impact sound is generated every time someone walks on a floor, moves a chair or drops a bag, so it’s easy to see why noise is an issue.

Floor coverings can help in two ways:

Impact sound reduction This is the measurement of the contribution

that the floor covering makes to reducing sound transmitted through the floor from one room to the floors below.

Reducing impact sound is very useful in multi-storey teaching environments and student accommodation where there is often additional distress caused by noisy neighbours.

Carpet tiles offer high-impact sound reduction, typically 25dB or greater.

In mixed use areas, Flotex flocked floor covering offers impact sound reduction of

up to 20dB and the maintenance properties of a resilient floor covering.

When considering resilient flooring, acoustic sheet vinyl ranges, such as Forbo’s new Sarlon collection, offer 15–19dB impact sound reduction with the more ‘natural’ solution, Marmoleum Decibel, achieving 17dB.

In-room impact noise This is the comparative measurement of the contribution that different floor coverings can make to reducing ambient noise generated in a room or circulation space. High ambient noise levels can have a significant detrimental

effect in a learning environment. Measurement of the comparative in-room impact noise properties of different floor covering types can be useful in helping to control ambient noise levels.

Four categories define floor covering performance with class A defining the best-performing floor coverings – all Forbo’s acoustic vinyl products achieve class A.

On 26 February 2016, the iF DESIGN AWARD 2016 winners were celebrated during an awards ceremony in Munich. The iF award winners from all over the world, including Forbo Flooring, were welcomed to the event by iF CEO Ralph Wiegmann.

A jury of 58 high-profile international experts judged entries across disciplines including

Product, Packaging, Communication, Service Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture and Professional Concept.

Jury chairman Fritz Frenkler says: “The jury was very impressed by the fact that so many products were of such a very high design quality, but we are also increasingly seeing excellent standards in finishing and workmanship. Of course, we are very proud of being able to fulfil our mission of presenting the most important design award while adhering to a uniquely objective assessment process.”

DESIGN AWARD FOR MARMOLEUM STRIATO

The new Marmoleum striato collection was judged on three main criteria: Aesthetics, Innovation & Environmental impact

Made from 97% natural raw materials, 72% rapidly renewable and 43% recycled content the winning collection also introduced new production techniques across the 3 ranges:

1. Colour, a range of bright and colourful designs. 2. Original, subtle and more tone on tone and 3. Textura introducing a technique where the linear linoleum structure is embossed to create a softer more tactile surface.

All award-winning entries are featured in the iF WORLD DESIGN GUIDE, the world’s largest design portal, and are presented permanently in the Design Excellence collection in Hamburg, home of all iF award-winning products and services from 1953 to present. A

LONG TALL SALLY gets the Allura Flex designer label Go-to label for the tall women of the world, Long Tall Sally, called Trifle when they were relocating from their Clerkenwell home to a new workspace in Aldgate East.

Lighten up – natural daylight is a must in a workspace. Try and make as much natural light accessible to your workforce to help battle illness and depression. A happy workforce is 12% more productive.

Emma Morley, Creative Director, Trifle Creative

The 680sqm empty shell needed full design, space planning and building…..and fast! Trifle Creative began the project by spending time in their old office discovering what would really make their working day more practical, more fluid, more fun and as a fashion brand, more stylish.

The new office and showroom was built in just 8 weeks and incorporates office space for 70 staff plus four independent offices, three meeting rooms, an ultra-gorgeous kitchen/café area, a great reception, a fitting room, a product room, masses of wardrobe space and shoe storage and a laundry room.

Phew! The look is modern and stylish – with a few feminine touches that you would expect from a female fashion brand.

Trifle Creative selected Forbo Flooring Systems’ luxury vinyl tile Allura Flex in white

weathered oak thanks to its high Light Reflectance Value (LRV) ratings and ability to give the space a contemporary feel.

The high LRV ratings of the pale wood aesthetic from the Allura Flex range,

installed by FLOOR_STORY, allows additional light, from artificial or natural sources, to reflect off the floor and brighten the space efficiently. The more light a workspace experiences, the more employees will benefit from an improved and healthier working environment.

The feedback from the team at Long Tall Sally was fantastic from the

The tufting process Tufting, invented around 1900, is now the most commonly used method of producing commercial quality carpet tiles. Carpet Tiles are manufactured in sheet format, on machinery that uses mounted needles to push yarn fibres through a primary backing material. The backing is generally formed from spun bonded polyester or woven tape, made from polyester and fibreglass. The fibres are ‘picked up’ by reciprocal ‘loopers’ or hooks and clustered together to create tufts forming a pile that is both hardwearing and comfortable underfoot.

Backing Once tufted, the sheet carpet is taken just across the road to Forbo’s latex and bitumen backing plant. A film of latex is applied to anchor the tufts of yarn in position. Forbo uses latex with renewablecontent for maximum ‘tuft lock,’ as well as good environmental performance. A secondary backing of modified bitumen with recycled filler and spun bonded polyester fleece is then applied to give the floor covering strength, durability and dimensional stability.

Forbo also offers SOFTbac® - as an option. Made almost entirely from recycled materials, it can be meltbonded to most Tessera tiles.

Shearing (if required) Most carpet tiles start off as a loop pile. Depending on the pile type required, these loops can be left intact or can be sheared, wholly or partially, to create a cut pile or cut and loop pile surface. Artificially high loops can be sheared to create a velvet type finish in selected areas of the tile.

TesseraThe name Tessera originates from a Latin word meaning four cornered tablet, or an individual piece of decorative flooring work, such as a mosaic. Today, the brand stands for multi-construction carpet tiles manufactured by Forbo in Bamber Bridge, in Lancashire.

Carpet tiles are widely used in commercial offices, government and educational buildings, as well as the retail and leisure sectors. Compared to broadloom carpets, they offer greater flexibility in terms of floor scheme design and their adaptability makes them compatible with frequently changing environments. State of the art tufting technology and manufacturing expertise underpins the Tessera brand. The diverse range includes loop pile, cut and loop pile, textured loop pile, random lay batchless and cut pile carpet tile designs.

Packing & logistics Forbo works closely with suppliers to maximise the level of recyclable packaging used and continuously reviews material usage, trialling new alternatives as they become available.

Tessera carpet tiles are stocked in Warrington, Cheshire, before orders are shipped out to UKand overseas customers. Selected stock is also held in regional distribution centres, in France, Russia and the Nordics, to ensure these territories have a quick supply of key products.

Recycling waste We are constantly striving to reduce our environmental impact at every stage in our production processes and are also concerned with what happens beyond the factory gates. Our Back to the Floor Scheme means that your installation off cuts can be recycled back into Tessera carpet tiles, saving you money and avoiding having to send waste to landfill.

Investment in the future As part of our ongoing mission to increase the recycled content of our products, we have invested over £1m in a new extruder at Bamber Bridge which allows our manufacturing team to dramatically increase the proportion of recycled content in this backing that gives Tessera carpet tiles their strength, durability and dimensional stability.

Beaming / Creeling For level loop pile products we begin the tufting process by winding continuous filament yarns onto a beam (large cylinder). This yarn is then carried to the needles via a series of dedicated tubes. Textured products are fed from a creel, a framework designed to hold many individual cones of yarns, allowing each individual yarn to be fed to the needle at its own rate, dependant on the height of the loop required at that part of the design.

ECONYL® solution dyed polyamide yarn is not just recycled, which can limit achievable colour choice and vibrancy; it is regenerated from post-consumer and industrial waste streams using the most advanced technology of its kind.It helps to protect marine life as abandoned nylon fishing nets

provide one of the many different waste streams that go into its production. These nets can present a hazard to marine life. Now, they are being reprocessed to serve a very different and more positive purpose.
