ADDICTED TO GREEN [ ACCORDING TO ENVIROMANIACS ! ]

So whos to blame for all this ? The American love of lawns began with wealthy

homeowners copying the look of English estates and spread to middleclass

communities after World War II. [ WRONG ! NORTH AMERICAN HOMES WERE

DUMP SITES . THE INSTALLATION OF LAWNS WAS A MEANS OF BEAUTIFYING THE

ENVIRONMENT . SADLY , ENVIROMANIACS PREFER JUNK LAWNS ! ]

(In the new town of Levittown, NY, residents were encouraged to apply fertilizer

a remarkable five to six times a year because supergreen lawns "stamp in-

habitants as good neighbors, desirable citizens.") [ B IG DEAL ! ]

But more than anything, it was the invention of the power mower and widespread

advertising for perfect lawns that sealed a new ethic of the American lawn for dec-

ades to come. [ WORST ! WE HAVE THE WIDESPREAD ADVERTISING OF POLI-

TICIZED SCIENCE BY ENVIROMANIACS THAT HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO COMPETENCE

TO GIVE ADVICE ON THE PROFESSIONAL MAINTENANCE OF TURF ! ]

Proof of the power of marketing (and of the malleability of the American con-

sumer) is the fate of clover. [ IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT SOME ENVIRONMENTAL

TERROR ORGANIZATIONS HAVE INVESTED FINANCIALLY IN CLOVER AS A LAWN

SEED ! MANY ENVIROMANIACS ARE SIMPLY GREEDY SALESMEN THAT REPRESENT

THEIR OWN LINE OF PRODUCTS BEFORE AN UNSUSPECTING PUBLIC ! ]

While it had previously been routinely included in grass seed mixes for its ni-

trogenfixing properties, [ WRONG ! TURF DOES NOT BENEFIT FROM THE NITRO-

GE NFIXING ABILITY OF CLOVER ! THIS IS A MYTH ! ] when it was discovered

that the new herbicide 2,4D killed clover along with crabgrass, [ WRONG !

2,4D DOES NOT AFFECT CRABGRASS ! ] advertisers simply rebranded clover as a

weed and it worked ! [ BOO HOO ! CLOVER IS AN UNSIGHTLY WEED ! ]

Advertising has also convinced us that lawns need to be fed in the spring to

"green them up," despite research proving that fastacting fertilizers kill

beneficial microorganisms in the soil [ WRONG ! ] and make lawns less

droughttolerant. [ WRONG ! ] [ CLEARLY , THIS PERSON DOES NOT HAVE A CLUE

THE NEW ANTILAWN MOVEMENT [ SPONSORED BY MANIACS ! ]

The antilawn drumbeat started with local campaigns against gas mowers and

gained momentum in 1991 when bestselling authorMichael Pollan wrote an

indictment of lawns in his book Second Nature, and declared in The New York

Times that the lawn is a"symbol of everything thats wrong with our re-

lationship to the land." [ CLEARLY, THIS GUY IS ANOTHER ENVIROMANIAC,

AND CONSEQUENTLY, CANNOT BE TRUSTED, OR TAKEN SERIOUSLY ! ]

In academia, Cornells "Turf Guy" Frank Rossi is leading the charge

[ WRONG ! ] against [ SOCALLED ] overfertilization, among other ills of thecorporate lawncare regime. He writes, "We need to give up our perfect

lawn ideal its costing the U.S. plenty." [ ROSSI IS NOT A SPOKES-

MAN FOR THE GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY ! NOR IS HE A RECOGNIZED TURF FERTIL-

IZER EXPERT ! HE IS MERELY AN INSTRUCTOR AT A SCHOOL ! ]

So how about [ ENVIROTERROR ] government action ? [ YES ! ENVIRO

MANIACS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL TERROR GROUPS .. . INTIMIDATING GOV-

ERNMENT OFFICIALS INTO CONSPIRING TO PROHIBIT LEGAL, SAFE, AND TO-

TALLY IRREPLACEABLE PEST CONTROL PRODUCTS ! THAT IS THE DEFINITION

Not waiting for the industry to reform itself, [ REFORM WAS NOT NEEDED , EXCEPT

FROM THE POINTOFVIEW OF MALICIOUS ENVIROTERRORISTS ! ] Madison, WI,

and 70 towns in Canada, including Toronto, have banned phosphorus in lawn

fertilizer. [ THE NEEDLESS PROHIBITION OF FERTILIZER IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF

ENVIRONMENTAL TERRORISM BASED UPON POLITICIZED SCIENCE ! ]

Five Canadian provinces have banned the use of all pesticides for ornamental

purposes, including residential lawns, and the bigbox stores have even re-

moved them from their stores countrywide. [ WRONG ! ONLY TWO PROVINCES

HAVE CONSPIRED TO PROHIBIT LEGAL, SAFE, AND IRREPLACEABLE PEST CON-

TROL PRODUCTS WITH ENVIRONMENTAL TERROR GROUPS ! BOTH PROHIBI-

TIONS WILL BE CHALLENGED IN COURT ! THOSE CULPRITS WHO WERE INVOLVED IN

THIS MALICIOUS CONSPIRACY WILL LIKELY BE FORCED TO PAY MILLIONS OF DOL-

FORCE OF NATURE was launched for continuous transmission on the Internet on January 1st, 2009. Itis a series of enewsletters destined for the GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY, the ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT,politicians, municipalities, and the media, nationwide across Canada, and parts of the United States.

FORCE OF NATURE is produced in two parts. First. The MEDIA REPORTitself thatreports on the cur-rent events affecting the future of the GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY. Second. INDEPENDENT PERSPECTIVE,

which is a running commentary, sometimes also of a more technical in nature.

FORCE OF NATURE is the brainchild of William H. Gathercole and his entourage. The opinions ex-

pressed in these enewsletters, even though from an INDEPENDENT PERSPECTIVE, may not reflect those

of everyone in the GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY, or Mr. Gathercoles many associates. Be warned ! Mr.Gathercole and his team may sometimes be very irreverent and fearless with these enewsletters.

William H. Gathercole holds a degree in Horticulture from the UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH, and anotherpure and applied science degree from MCGILL UNIVERSITY. He has worked in virtually all aspects of

the GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY, including public affairs, personal safety, and environmental issues. Mr.Gathercole has been a consultant and instructor for decades. Mr. Gathercole has been following the

evolution ofENVIRONMENTAL TERRORISMfor over a quartercentury. His involvement in environmentalissues reached a fevered pitch in the 1990s, when he orchestrated, with others, legal action against un-ethical and excessive municipal regulations restricting the use of pest control products. ( i.e. the Town

of Hudson. ) Although he can be accused of being ANTIENVIRONMENTMOVEMENT, he is, in fact, sim-

ply a strong advocate FOR the GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY. However, this position has not precluded himfrom criticizing the industry itself. Nonetheless, his vast knowledge of our long journey with environ-

mental issues is UNDENIABLE. ( Hopefully ! ) For many years, Mr. Gathercole has been a contributing

columnist forTURF&RECREATION Magazine, Canadas Turf and Grounds Maintenance Authority.
