THE HBC COMMITTED FOLKS ARE REACHING OUT TOGETHER!
I am absolutely thrilled at the HBC Family response to the first week of “40 Days of Community.” We had to order 25 more books which puts participation at nearly 100 committed people! This means more than 8 out of 10 of our regular attenders have committed to this spiritual experience!
During the next 40 days we’re looking at two things. One is deepening the sense of community within our church family, reaching out to the community around our church family. Deepening the sense of love within our church family. Reaching out in love to the community around our church family. We’re learning to build stronger relationships in our church and reach out in relationships of love to those around our church. The reason we’re doing this is because the Bible says we’re better together.
Last week we talked about how you were created for five purposes. But those five purposes that God has for your life cannot be fulfilled on your own. You have to have other people in your life. We are wired for relationships. God said, “It is not good for man to be alone.” God hates loneliness. So He wants us to be in community with each other.
The tragedy is most people today don't have a single intimate friend. They’ve got a lot of acquaintances but they don’t have anybody looking out for their spiritual growth, who’s helping them, who’s saying I'm going to be there no matter what happens in your life.
Last week we looked at, “Why do we need each other?” During the next six weeks we’re looking at six messages on deepening relationships so you can fulfill God’s purposes. Then we’re going to read this book 40 days of growing together – Better Together. A daily devotional. Then in our small groups we’re looking at six videos and discussing on building stronger relationships.
This Sunday we’re going to start with the end. The last purpose of your life is, “You were made for a mission.” God wants you to share His love with other people – with your friends, with your family, with the people you work with – and show His love to those who don’t know Christ yet. Those who are not in His family.
Before you can do that though, you have to make a choice. You have to make the choice that says I'm going to be unselfish. I'm going to start caring not just about my own life, but I'm going to start caring about other people’s lives. I'm going to care about telling others about the good news. That’s the choice. Will I choose to do the right thing? Will I choose to be loving? Will I choose to follow what God wants?
On the grace journey of 40 Days together with you, Lynwood

Who Do You Think Jesus Is?
In his book “The Knowledge of the Holy,” A. W. Tozer made this insightful comment, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” In essence he was saying this: What you and I think about who God is directly influences how we live and interact with our Creator.
If we view God as some sort of judge, overseeing a kind of proceeding in a cosmic court case, doling out “justice” as people deserve, we will oftentimes live in fear, trying to hide our weaknesses and faults. We’ll live
hoping and praying that the “judge” does not see who we really are, or we will face His wrath.
If we see God as an eternal ATM of blessings, where all we need to know is the right PIN number in order to “get what’s coming to us,” then we’ll approach our “spiritual life” as a way of “getting it right” so that God will open His account of blessings and shower them upon us.
Sometimes we see God as some sort of benevolent grandfather, whose job is to give us what we want, when we want it. And when things don’t end up working out as we want them to, we blame God, our heavenly grandfather, who has not come through on His job description.
This is the most central question in life, is it not? Who do you think Jesus is? Now before you answer that question, consider this: How you answer this question could change the way you live your life. If Jesus really is who we as His followers claim Him to be, it could change everything. In other words, if you could go along business-as-usual with your life, perhaps you may need to revisit who you really think Jesus is.
If Jesus is God, if He truly is God incarnate – then the things He teaches us, as well as the kind of life He lived, are to be emulated. If we truly call ourselves followers of Jesus, then our job is to... well, actually follow Him, orienting our lives around the way He lived and what He taught.
Who do you say Jesus is? What does the way you live your life say about what you truly believe the answer to be?
In Mark 8:27-29 we read, “On the way he asked them, ‘Who do people say I am?‘ They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.‘ ‘But what about you?‘ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?‘ Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”
The way you answer that same question could change everything!
Need A Push?
A man is in bed with his wife when there is knocking on the door. He rolls over and looks at his clock. It’s half past three in the morning.
“I’m not getting out of bed at this time,” he thinks, and rolls over.
Then, a louder knock follows. “Aren’t you going to answer that?” says his wife. So he drags himself out of bed, and goes downstairs. He opens the door and there is a man standing at the door.
It doesn’t take the homeowner long to realize the man is drunk.
“Hi there,” slurs the stranger, “Can you give me a push?” “No, get lost, it’s half past three. I was in bed,” says the man and slams the door.
He goes back up to bed and tells his wife what happened and she says “Dave, that wasn’t very nice of you. Remember that night we broke down in the pouring rain on the way to pick the kids up from the baby-sitter and you had to knock on that man’s house to get us started again? What would have happened if he’d told us to get lost?”
“But the guy was drunk,” says the husband.
“It doesn’t matter,” says the wife. “He needs our help and it would be the Christian thing to help him.”
So the husband gets out of bed again, gets dressed, and goes downstairs.
He opens the door, and not being able to see the stranger anywhere he shouts, “Hey, do you still want a push?” and he hears a voice cry out,
“Yeah, please!”
Still being unable to see the stranger, he shouts, “Where are you?”
The stranger replies, “I’m over here, on your swing.”
There are times we all need a little push from one another. In fact, that’s one of the reasons that we gather together in worship. We could praise God alone, but we have the opportunity to encourage one another every time we meet together.
“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see
the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)
It’s not just reserved for Sundays, though. Know anybody that needs a push today?
I Cannot Pray the Lord’s Prayer
I cannot pray “OUR,” if my faith has no room for others and their need.
I cannot pray “FATHER,” if I do not demonstrate this relationship to God in my daily living.
I cannot pray “WHO ART IN HEAVEN,” if all of my interests and pursuits are in earthly things.
I cannot pray “HALLOWED BE THY NAME,” if I am not striving for God’s help to be holy.
I cannot pray “THY KINGDOM COME,” if I am unwilling to accept God’s rule in my life.
I cannot pray “THY WILL BE DONE,” if I am unwilling or resentful of having it in my life.
I cannot pray “IN EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN,” unless I am truly ready to give myself to God’s service here and now.
I cannot pray “GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD,” without expending honest effort for it or if I would withhold from my neighbor the bread I receive.
I cannot pray “FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US,” if I continue to harbor a grudge against anyone.
I cannot pray “LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION,” if I deliberately choose to remain in a situation where I am likely to be tempted.
I cannot pray “DELIVER US FROM EVIL,” if I am not prepared to fight with my life and my prayer.
I cannot pray “THINE IS THE KINGDOM,” if I am unwilling to obey the King.
I cannot pray “THINE IS THE POWER AND THE GLORY,” if I am seeking power for myself and my own glory first.
I cannot pray ‘FOREVER AND EVER,” if I am too anxious about each day’s affairs.
I cannot pray “AMEN,” unless I honestly say “Not MY will, but THY will be done, so let it be.
The Lord’s Prayer begins with “OUR FATHER…”
Another reminder that we can’t live our Christianity alone – We need each other is our “40 Days of Community”
Next week: Reaching Out Better Together
Well, we’re off and running on the 40 Days of Community Campaign! Please read the first
seven daily readings in the “Better Together: What on Earth Are We Here For?” workbook,
memorize your verse this week, and start in a 40 Days of Community Host Home. NEXT
WEEK we learn about our exciting project where our small groups will be reaching out to help
meet one of the biggest needs in our local community. But reaching out can start and now—
invite a friend to hear this message!
The Last Impression
A surgeon, an architect, and a lawyer were having a heated discussion concerning which of their professions was actually the oldest. The surgeon said, “Surgery is the oldest profession. God took a rib from Adam to create Eve, and you can’t go back further than that.”
The architect said, “Hold on! In fact, God was the first architect when he created the world out of chaos in seven days, and you can’t go back any further than THAT!”
The lawyer leaned back in his chair and said, “Gentlemen, gentlemen – who do you think created the CHAOS?”
Many of you may remember back to our time studying the 40 Days of Purpose, where we as a church learned about God’s five purposes for our lives. These purposes were designed to answer the question, “What on earth am I here for?” Well get ready to start another campaign! January 26th we begin 40 Days of Community, a 6-week journey that is designed to answer the question, “What on earth are WE here for?”
Together, our entire church family will expand outwardly on God’s five purposes to focus on Jesus’ power to change us, our church and our community. This campaign is a great opportunity to serve our community—to make a life-changing impact! Let’s show others in our community our faith in God by what we do. To receive the full benefit of these 40 life-changing days, you will want to participate in each spiritual emphasis:
Hear all six weekend messages.
Read the 40 daily devotions from the workbook, “What on Earth Are We Here For?”. Based on the “one anothers” of scripture, your workbook also provides daily Bible readings, weekly scripture memory verses, and pages where you can journal as you go.
Join a 40 Days of Community connect group. If you are not already part of
a small group, what are you waiting for? Visit the Connect Center to find a host home in your area today.
Will you commit the next 40 days of your life to participate in this great spiritual journey? Imagine the impact if we deepened the community within our church and served the community around our church. Get ready for another life change and to be blessed!
Looking forward to “40 Days of Community” Together with you! - Pastor Lynwood
Do You Know God? What does it mean to “know” God? There are three different levels that we can know God. Acquaintance level – Knowing God means to encounter Him at certain pivotal times in life. It could be at an especially moving worship service or perhaps in a life crisis. In that moment we really do sense something different and may even go as far as to make a shallow commitment. But in our daily life, there is very little – if any – change. Affectionate level – Knowing God is not just experiencing a mo-ment of spiritual excitement but a commitment to be actively in-volved with God. Friends spend time together and are involved in each other’s lives. At this level, we are involved with God – to a point. We come to church and may even participate in its activities. We try from time to time to have a daily quiet time and attempt to be disciplined in spiritual habits. In other words, we are really working at this friendship. However, if the friendship level is as deep as we ever go in the pursuit of a relationship with God, sooner or later we will long for something more, because we were created for an intimate relationship with God. Abiding level – When Jesus says we can “know” Him, He is talking about a “marriage level” relationship. The first time that “know” is used in the Bible is in Genesis 4:1 – “Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain”. When the Bible talks about “knowing” someone, it is not only referring to a physical knowledge, but to an even deeper level of intimacy. Many of us settle for a nodding acquaintance or a mere surface affection with the Father, when what He really desires and what we really need is the abiding level relationship. There are many people in the Bible who had that kind of relationship with God. David was a man after God’s own heart. Moses spoke with God face to face. Mary, Martha and Lazarus were close, personal friends of Jesus. The disciples served beside Him day in and day out. You and I can have what those people had! Do you know Him? Jesus‘ prayer for you in John 17:3 says “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
Don’t Let Others Hold You Back
Joseph’s brothers resented his dream, so they sold him into slavery. David’s family didn’t consider him worthy of being king. The people who knew Jesus during His first 30 years said, “‘Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? Is this not the carpenter’s son?’...So they were offended at Him...” (Matthew 13:54-57 NKJV)
You must realize that some of the people who knew you “way back when” don’t know you now, because they’ve “pigeonholed you.”
What should you do? Do what Jesus did – He moved on. What else could He do? He refused to allow others to keep Him stuck at a stage in His life that was past and gone, and you have got to do the same. If you allow others to keep taking you down memory lane, you’ll eventually set up house, stay longer than you should and miss your God-given destiny.
It’s wonderful to have people in your life who know where you’ve been and can relate to where you’re going. However, if you have to choose between then and now, sacrifice then, for it can’t be rewritten, only replayed over and over. Stop rehearsing your beginnings and write the rest of your story. The future is yours – seize it while you can.
There’s a story of a hacker on a golf course who kept swinging at the ball and missing, repeatedly hitting an ant hill. Finally one ant took charge and said, “Follow me.” Another ant yelled, “But where are we going?” He pointed to the ball sitting in front of them. “There. If we don’t get on the ball we’re going to die!”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for your faithful prayers and generous giving to HBC…
As we continue to
obey God, listen to His voice,
and work together – we will continue to accomplish great
things for His kingdom!
