But also, recalls Marramao, an activity born at the same time as politics. The Italian philosopher comes to a critical reflection on the present.

Evaluating Philosophies

MARIO BUNGE

The adoption of a philosophical system is not usually the result of a long, careful deliberation but rather an spontaneous combination of predisposition with necessity and opportunity, which are either accepted or rejected without using a clear and objective criteria.

The evaluation of these theories is mostly intuitive, utilitarian or emotional. How can we evaluate philosophies? Nobody seems to have found out how to assess their achievements: there doesn’t seem to be any objective or generally accepted judgements. This book tries to answer a question that everyone can’t stop asking: how to assess a philosophy? The book is a protest and at the same time a proposal to some neglected philosophical questions.

MaRIO BuNGE: Born in Buenos Aires (1919), he received the Prince of Asturias Award in 1982. His extensive bibliography covers fundamental aspects of physics, the philosophy

of natural and social sciences, semantics, ontology and ethics.

MARCELO PAKMAN

In an era marked by the pre-eminence of either science –which supposedly would describe the empirical reality in a direct and immediate way– or of the signs monopolized by the processes of signification that came to a central place with the linguistic turnaround, Textures of the imagination rescues the material sensuality of the reality circumvented by the abstractions reigning in those two polar positions.

Textures of the imagination, without overthrowing the dimension of the sign, questions its identification with the processes of signification from the linguistic standpoint that, from philosophy, gained a primacy that allowed it to act as a refuge before the vivid reality of the existence in its historical truth.

MaRCELO PakMaN: Known for his articulations between philosophy and epistemology, he has given seminars and conferences in more than 90 cities in America, Europe and

Asia and has published articles in English, Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese.

JULIO CABRERA

Criticizing Affirmative Morality

When wondering philosophically about the value of human life, one must ask specifically about the value of the self by its own, and not the value of a particular being.

The “affirmative” aspect criticized in this book is manifested in the conviction that ethical theory should not ask directly how-to-be (how to live well, how to be happy, etc.), answering by doing so the most fundamental question about the value of the self-being.

Because of the non-radical nature of their thought, a great number of anti-ethical actions that are not strictly based on the transgression of moral norms are systematically excluded from the critical scope of affirmative ethics, but rather on their secondary application.

A “resilience tutor” (concept created by Boris Cyrulnik) refers to a person who, sometimes unconsciously, accompanies those who are facing a traumatic situation in such a way that their simple presence and connection, often silent, causes a true convulsion at all levels: a “resilience tutor” helps to give another meaning to their traumas.

In this book the authors have tried to show the two sides of a “Resilience Tutor”. On the one hand, the theoretical knowledge that every tutor must have, and on the other an account of the reflections and experiences that the authors have had.

The adaptation of religions in contemporary societies is a subject of enormous complexity. On one hand, those who predicted the gradual disappearance of faith in an increasingly secular society have shown that, although many have lost ground, others are driven now by current sociopolitical factors.

On the other hand, in a democratic society defending human rights, the absolutist pretensions of some religions collide with modern ethics. The need to build bridges between the different actors is urgent, but also an exciting challenge for the XXI century.

On the Border JORGE ALEMáN

The intent of this work is to find and make possible the construction of a new form of experience, taking into consideration that the challenge of our time is to see if there is a possibility of lighting a new antagonism that puts into play other rules and wills based on the desire of each, but without renouncing the struggle against exploitation and poverty.

In this way Jorge Alemán makes relations between psychoanalysis and the left-wing providing a valuable toolbox with which to open a new starting point for the effervescent movements of the left. Now that the crisis facilitates a rethinking of capitalist theory and practice, the Lacanian Left can open its way to a new system that takes more account of the experience of the Unconscious.

Mª AMOR PéREz-RODRíGuEz & OTHERS

Children and teenagers grow up surrounded by media and technology, by screens in which they freely show their lives. Teachers must assume, as part of their professional responsibility, strategies and educational resources appropriate to the most current technologic and media development.

Media education keeps being something incidental and instrumental. To consider how its languages work, how its messages are produced, the rhetoric and technics they use to create a meaning, in which way they choose and manipulate information and communication, can help to diminish the authority of media itself, destroying its myths and fomenting critical conscience towards it.

Images are links between different times and cultures: symptoms and signs that leave traces in the cultural imaginary. An archeology of the image implies considering the image from the intermediality (between-media) and to conceive it from a critique of the culture in a society crossed by the crisis.

The question of what a image is acquires its full dimension from the moment it confuses image with visual or image with audiovisuals, ignoring altogether images that are not visual. The image is “nomad”, travels by territories and cultures.
