Max Reisch Around the World by Car in 1935 Pioneering journey through Burma, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and China Im Auto um die Erde Pionierfahrt durch Burma, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam und China ISBN: 3-85068-176-6 size: 15,5x 24 cm, hardcover, 207 b/w illustrations, 10 maps, 262 pages 2nd revised edition 2012

The book Many well-observed details, numerous instantaneous meetings with

remarkable people raise the book far on the topic of a geographic report and make it an adventure book. A Trans-Asia expedition presented at that time a real challenge. Adventures on the Oil road to Bagdad, 3000 m high passes in Persia and Afghanistan… In Burma, the challenges were monsoon rains, floods and death-defying river crossings. In Burma (Myanmar) and Thailand there was often not even a jungle trail to traverse this area. Max Reisch as driver and Helmuth Hartmann as camera man and engineer, traversed China along narrow paths through the rice fields. After all kinds of hardships the car rolled over the good roads of Canada, United States and Mexico to reach its aim Europe.

The author Max Reisch, (1912 – 1985), undertook various expeditions, he was highly estimated as an explorer. He undertook the first overland journey to India by motorcycle in 1933

Max Reisch India - 13.000 km pioneering journey of Max Reisch and Herbert Tichy Indien – Lockende Ferne 13.000 km Pionierfahrt mit Herbert Tichy nach Indien ISBN: 3-85068-131-5 size: 15,5x 24 cm, hardcover 228 pages, 52 pages with illustration 8th revised edition 2013 Available in English The book First overland journey to India by motorcycle in 1933

This is a truly great travel adventure through Iraq, Iran and Baluchistan to India in 1933. But what really sets this book apart are the wonderful descriptions of the people and cultures, now nearly forgotten, but still hugely relevant in today's age: all brought evocatively to life by the wonderful photos from 1933. At that time, the idea of travelling to India on a motorbike through the deserts was considered impossible; there were no roads and they were attempting to cross the burning deserts in the middle of August, on a tiny two-stroke motorcycle with barely enough power for the bike and rider, let alone a pillion passenger! Gripping stuff, yet perceptive and full of drama - definitely a must for all travel and motorcycle enthusiasts. In 1933 the Tyrolian pioneer Max Reisch undertook the most difficult journey of his life: by motorcycle from Vienna to India. This risky journey lead Max Reisch and Herbert Tichy through deserts and jungle.

The author Max Reisch, born 1912, undertook various expeditions, he was highly estimated as an explorer. Another famous journey was a Trans-Asia-expedition already in the year 1935.

Hubert Schier The history of Steyr’s automobiles from 1865 – 1945 Die Steyrer Automobil-Geschichte von 1865 - 1945 Hardcover with ribbon, colour photographs and illustrations 352 pages, size 21 x 29,7 cm ISBN 978-3-85068-926-7 Published in November 2015

The book: The author Hubert Schier invites you to travel through time via this history of

automobile construction in Steyr. This employee of MAN describes in detail the complete history of car and truck production in the iron city of Steyr. In fact this only lasted a short while, from 1920 to 1941, but it was characterized by considerable success. Many of the vehicles “made in Steyr” were ground-breaking in technique and design. The history of motor manufacture in Austria is connected inseparably with Steyr. In 1856, Josef Werndl laid the foundations when he took over his father’s arms factory at the age of 25. It was the precursor of the ÖWG (Austrian arms manufacturing company) out of which the Steyr Works (1926) and the Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG (1934) emerged. The engineer Hans Ledwinka was the constructor of the first Steyr automobile in 1920, the so-called Steyr type II. This first car in a series, a 12/40 PS six cylinder with a pointed v-shaped radiator, was also called the “arms car”. It bore the characteristic emblem of the arms factory. Before too long, further automobile models followed, which charmed the public with their reliability and robustness, but also their elegance, one of which was the Steyr type 50/55, nicknamed the “Steyr-baby”. The book also focuses on the numerous successes in motor races at home and abroad as well as on the adventurous exploits in which Steyr automobiles made their mark. Hubert Schier also shines a light on the economic and social background to the times. The book is rounded off by an overview of all the automobile factories in Austria in the 19th and 20th centuries and of the personalities who left their mark on Steyr, such as the constructors Hans Ledwinka, Ferdinand Porsche and Karl Jenschke.

The author:

Hubert Schier, born in Steyr in 1957, has been linked with the Steyr-Werke for decades. Automobile construction has been an interest of his for many years. After his graduation from the automobile and engine Construction College in Steyr, he started his career in 1981 at Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG. After many years abroad as a service technician in Asia and the Middle East, in 1990 he moved – after the takeover of the truck department by MAN – to the MAN Service Academy. He still shares his technical know-how from Steyr with many different world markets.

• Photographs of all the rifles manufactured in Steyr (in cooperation with Steyr Mannlicher,

the operation which is the direct descendent of the ÖWG • High quality lay-out, with colour illustrations throughout • Josef Werndl’s biography with comprehensive history of the “Österreichische

Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft ÖWG”(=Austrian Arms Factory Company) in Steyr This biography is about a man who was called “Greatest Son of Steyr”, “Father of the Workers”, pioneer of Steyr, benefactor, but also exploiter of his workers, pure capitalist and patriarchal entrepreneur. Josef Werndl, born on 26th February 1831, was not only arms manufacturer, owner and major shareholder of one of the greatest entrepreneurs of the Austria-Hunagrian monarchy. He was also father of a large family, politician, commander of the Citizens Corps, share holder of the Wolfsegg-Traunthaler Kohlenwerks-Gesellschaft, initiator for the production of former high-tech products, financier of infrastructure like bridges, streets, basic realignments, builder of one of the greatest housing estates, initiator of social services, benefactor of many kinds of institutions… This book describes the life of the industrialist Josef Werndl, but it also examines in detail the history of the Austrian arms manufacturing company “Österreichische Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft” (ÖWG) in the town of Steyr, which was the largest and most modern equipped armoury in Europe during the time of Austro-Hungarian Empire.

His most important work was the creation of the Steyrer Waffenfabrik company, which can be traced back to the fittings factory founded by his father. In 1861 the plant director Karl Holub approached Werndl. Together they constructed a breech-loader with a standardised “wave-closure”, which went on to be a breakthrough for the Steyrer Waffenfabrik. In April 1867 Werndl received the order to modify 50,000 infantry guns and hunting rifles using the new Wänzl system. After long negotiations the firm became a limited company in 1869, with the name ÖWG.
