November, 2014
It has been a very busy few weeks at Forest Park School! As students and staff have settled into routines, many special events have taken place and are noted throughout the newsletter – cross country running, 50th Anniversary, We Scare Hunger, We Day, Spare Change For Brains, Judge James McCrae visit, Skating, Equine visits, field trips and Halloween dress up day.
November will continue to be a busy month of learning. Parent-Teacher-Student conferences will take place in the third week of November. We are looking forward to meeting with all parents. Parents who want to book their own conference times are invited to do so online by using the Parent Connect program beginning November 10th. Connect to Parent Connect through the Seven Oaks Division Web-site at 7oaks.org and choose “Parents” at the top left of the screen. Parents who do not book an ap-pointment online with Parent Connect will have an appointment time sent home in their in this report card.
Parent Connect is a secure program that allows parents the opportunity to book parent teacher meeting times, keep their phone and email addresses current, print their child’s report card, view their child’s absences and other information. Give it a try.
We have had four fire drills so far this year. Each school in the province is required to hold a minimum of 10 fire drills throughout each school year. Drills can be in the morning, afternoon, during breaks, in summer and winter. Three lockdown drills are also required in all schools each year. We will practice our first lockdown drill during November. Teachers will discuss lockdown drills so that all students are aware of the upcoming drill. Our second and third lockdown drills will take place later in the school year. Parents are encouraged to speak to their children about lockdown and fire drills at home.
As colder weather approaches, please be sure that your children are dressed for the weather. The expectation is always that recesses happen outdoors. We have found that most children are appreciat-ing the longer recess breaks that allow them to get more fully engaged in playtime and games outside. Any season – enjoy the outdoors!
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF, TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER, TAKE CARE OF THIS PLACE.

Forest Park Grade 3/4 Teacher, Swati Prabharkar created this beautiful art using coloured rice in celebration of Diwali, also known as Divali or Deepavali and the "festival of lights". Diwali is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn every year. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. The students in Room 7 also created the beautiful artwork seen above.

Forest Park School celebrated our
50TH ANNIVERSARY with a beautiful reception at our school. 3 of the original
teachers from 1964 were in attendance as well as former students, parents and staff. Our current students performed in a wonderful
concert of songs from the decades and everyone had a great time.

Are you registered for Parent Connect? Beginning this Fall, Forest Park School will be using Parent Connect to book appointments for Parent-Teacher Confer-ences. Our goal is to give all families greater choice in booking their conference times with teachers. Families are reminded to register as soon as possible. What is Parent Connect? Parent Connect is a password-protected website that allows parents to access information pertaining to their child, such as: attendance, report cards, family information, and news bulletins. Why are we using Parent Connect? • Families will have the ability to go online to book their own times for Parent-Teacher Conferences, allowing for more choice. • Parents will be able to check their children’s attendance. • Parents will be able to send messages to each of their children’s teachers. • Families will be able to change and keep their contact information current. How do I set up my Parent Connect account?
You will need your student’s MET Number, which is the number the Province assigns to each student for their entire school career. This number is located at the top of the report card. Kindergarten and students new to Canada will not have a MET number assigned until January. If you cannot locate your child’s MET number contact the office.
On the Seven Oaks School Division Website (7oaks.org), click on the Parents heading in the top right hand cor-ner.
You will now see several options, you need to click on the Parent Connect Using MET number which will take you right to Parent Connect. You then need to sign in.
On your initial log in, click on “FORGOT MY PASSWORD”. You will be prompted to enter the 9 digit MET number and your postal code (lowercase letters and no space). The system will then send you a temporary password to the email address you have on file at the school. Please note this is a temporary password and it should be changed as soon as possible. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE PASSWORDS TO STUDENTS.
See detailed instructions on booking your Parent/Teacher Interview attached to this newsletter.
What if I do not have internet access? We will provide a paper copy of report cards to families who do not have internet access. Families will also have the opportunity to make appointments for Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences by phone. If you have questions please contact Glenda at 204-338-9341.

WE SCARE HUNGER
This week at Forest Park school we collected baby food for the hungry babies
living here in Winnipeg. While we collected baby food we also had colour
days to match the colour of baby food that we were collecting each day. For example, Monday was Orange Day, Tuesday was Green Day and Wednesday was Yellow Day for We Scare Hunger. At the end of those three days we collected 367 jars of baby food and all of them will go to the Winnipeg Harvest to feed the hungry
babies in our community.
Thank you for all your help.

Elaine and A.J. are from the same family, with the same guardians; therefore they can both be scheduled using the student scroll (top left). The student you are on will appear in black, and the other(s) in blue. Note: you with the same ParentConnect id can only sign up for one timeslot at the same time, regardless of how many students they have.
Parent Teacher Interviewer – Parent Manual
The purpose of ParentConnect Interview is to give parents the opportunity to sign up for
parent-teacher interviews online, based on pre-set dates and times.
NOTE: Parents can only have one ParentConnect browser open at a time; if you try to log
in on two different browsers at the same time, it will crash.
From ParentConnect there is an <interview> tab that allows parents to either lookup and/or
edit interview times.
The right side of the screen confirms what has already
been scheduled and will include all students in your
family and the times selected. Use the ‘print’ button for a
printer-friendly PDF copy of the schedule.
The top left indicates student(s), school(s) and guardian. If you are a guardian or parent
for more than one student in the division, use the scroll button to select the appropriate
student you want to schedule the interview for. Below that, select the appropriate school
(if the student attends more than one school). The guardian represents who is registering
for the interviews. If guardian 1 and guardian 2 are registered under the same account,
there will be a scroll down with the ability to choose either guardian. If you do not have
more than one guardian sharing an account, the guardian (you) will already be selected.
‘Select a teacher’ provides a scroll bar with all of the teachers who teach this student.
Below that is a box that is defaulted with a check to limit the selection to teachers who
teach that student. Unchecking this box will allow you to book with someone (for example
a coach or resource teacher) who may not have a scheduled course with the student.
Note: to see more dates, click on next/previous.
You may use the ‘limit to date and time’ for specific times; for example, if you are only free
for one evening, limit to this evening and the teachers will be sorted in order of timeslot
availability (not the same teacher showing all of their available times). Then you can set
up interviews without going separately to each individual teacher.
The top right of the screen offers the
opportunity to waitlist an interview. If you
are going through the available times and
absolutely nothing works to see a teacher,
you can ‘add waitlist’
Select a teacher, a date, a start and stop
time (can be a timeframe or specific time), and
then leave a comment for the teacher as to why
this waitlist is requested. Then hit ‘add to waitlist’
It will then be up to the teacher to decide if that
time will work or not.
To see a more reader-friendly copy of your booked appointments, use the <print> button
to create a PDF copy. If you have more than one student, it will put each student on a
different page.

Fall/Winter 2014
Ajit Kaur Deol (O.M)Celebrating an Amazing Volunteer & A Long Serving Member of S.O.E.F
Ajit Kaur Deol has served as a dedicated volunteer with the Seven Oaks Education Foundation since the first elected board in June, 2002. In fact, she has been committed to volunteerism her entire life. She has a strong connection to the Seven Oaks School Division as you will discover when you learn of her many accomplishments.
Ajit and her husband arrived in Canada from India during Canada’s centennial year, 1967. She began teaching in Marathon, Ontario then went on to further her education, which already included three bachelor degrees and a masters degree from Universities in India. She taught school, attended University of Toronto and received an Honours Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts, was mother to three young daughters and volunteered for several organizations all while living in Ontario.
In 1975 the family arrived in Manitoba after purchasing a dairy and grain farm just east of Beausejour. She suddenly became a farmer alongside her husband but also continued teaching at Edward Schreyer School in Beausejour. The first association she joined was the Beausejour Lioness Club where she served as president from 1982-83. The family began to attend the Sikh Gurudwara in Winnipeg. She served as director of the Singh Sabha and became the first woman in North America and only woman in Manitoba to serve as president of the
Sikh Gurudwara, Singh Sabha in 1986.
When she first began to teach in Manitoba she was the only teacher of Indian descent and so she was called upon by multicultural MLA, Maureen Hemphill, to be of assistance to new Canadians. She became known to
school division superintendents and trustees as someone who could help new families in various communities in and around Winnipeg. In fact, she visited high schools to see how senior high students were adjusting to academic and social programs in their respective schools. The University of

Manitoba invited her to be a liaison for Bachelor of Education students, a resource to those students who would eventually be looking for teaching jobs in the province.
Sadly, Ajit’s husband passed away suddenly while visiting his mother in India. After the family returned from the funeral in India, Ajit was approached by John Wiens, assistant superintendent for Seven Oaks School Division, to take a position as a resource teacher at Maples Collegiate. He knew she would be an invaluable asset to the collegiate, working with new students arriving almost daily from countries around the world. Ever the risk taker, and always one to embrace change, she sold the farm and she and her daughters moved to Winnipeg to begin another adventure.
Women’s issues were emerging in the 70’s and 80’s so Ajit became involved in several women’s committees looking for equality in education. She was the first president of “Women in Education” from 1982-86. She also served on the “Women in Education
Committee” for the Prairie Provinces. She was a member of the Canadian Multicultural Council from 1985-87. The list of committees she embraced is long and impressive. She was also given appointments as director for several Boards including the Macauliffe Institute of Sikh Studies, Winnipeg Boys’ and Girls’ Club, United Nations Platform for Action Committee (Manitoba Global Outreach), Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation and University of Winnipeg Women’s Club.
Over the years Ajit has been the recipient of many awards. In Canada she has been recognized by the following organizations:
• 1988- Outstanding Community Service Award – Macauliffe Institute of Sikh Studies
• 1988-Recognition of Service – City of Winnipeg for work with Community and Race Relations Committee
• 1997- Community Service Award 100th Anniversary of Sikhs in Canada
• 2002- Order of Manitoba (O.M.)
• 2002- Queen’s Jubilee Medal• 2002- Outstanding Community
Service Award, “Manitoba FRIENDS Org.”
• 2003- Distinguished Community Service Award – National Indo Canadian Council
• 2013- Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pin
Ajit has a rare accomplishment with which to regale her family and friends; her meetings with Queen Elizabeth. She has met the Queen on four occasions. The first time she was a young woman in India and was invited to have dinner with the Queen. The other three meetings were here in Canada.
Her most distinct honour came in 2013, when she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Winnipeg at their spring convocation. She was a most fitting recipient having devoted so much of her life to education, multiculturalism, and social justice issues. She is a proud Canadian citizen, who through her faith and conviction has supported her community, here in Manitoba and throughout the country.
Ajit is most proud of her family. Her three daughters, Pamela, Monika and Minny, all accomplished young women with families, have followed in their mother’s footsteps, volunteering and taking leadership roles in their communities. Ajit has eight grandchildren who are equally talented and eager to learn and follow the example of service from their Naneeji(grandmother). They are actively involved in school events, cultural activities, and make their Naneeji and parents proud every day.
In keeping with her commitment to her educational community she has devoted her energies these past eleven years to helping many graduating students of Seven Oaks School Division realize their dreams of attending post secondary programs. Her contribution to the Seven Oaks Education Foundation and Seven Oaks School Division is immeasurable.
