EDUCATION CENTER

CUMBERLAND FOREST UNIT

Cumberland Forest Approximate Area – 8360.7 acres

Morgan County Area = 5480.7 acres

South tract = 3957.5 acres

North tract = 1523.2 acres

Scott County Area = 2880.0 acres (North Tract)

Approximate Miles of Existing Roads – 38.25 total

North Tract = 12.00 miles

South Tract = 26.25 miles

Note: most roads are the old coal mine roads and tie into the contour mines. These stated road

distances for the most part exclude these mines.

Approximate Acres in Inactive Contour Mines - 227.92 total*

North Tract = 60.19 acres

South Tract = 167.73 acres

*See attached South Tract maps for illustration (Figures 1-3). Mines were also auger mined and deep

mined.

Other historical disturbance (pre-dating UT ownership) includes a long-term logging camp on the North

Tract (mule and horse pens, company housing on extensive clearings, railroad tracks, etc. – SEE Figure

4.), heavy timber harvesting across the property, and several cleared farms.

Some current exceptions include two water utility tanks servicing the communities of Mossy Grove and

Coalfield (Morgan County), one convenience center (Coalfield), two main gas lines and a main power

transmission line.

Cumberland Forest Research & Demonstration Projects*

*There are over 200 historical and active research and demonstration projects on the Cumberland

Forest. The following is just brief sample of these. Many historical research & demonstration projects

become active research projects with variation in parameters (5 of the research projects below were

initiated from older studies/activities)

Published & Ongoing Research

- Shortleaf Pine Seedling Sprouting in Response to Fire Top-Kill (FWF)

- Introduced Carbon (Sugar/Sawdust) Effects on Oak and Poplar Regeneration (FWF)

- Time of Cutting Effects on Oak Stump Sprouting (FWF)

- Oak Growth Response in a Mixed Hardwood Planting (FWF)

- Effects of Systemic and Contact Insecticides on Natural Beneficial Insects (EPP)

- Evaluation of Forest Growth Model Accuracy Using 47 Year Forest Inventory Data (FWF)

- Soil Function on 50 Year Old Coal Mine Sites (FWF)

- Forest Productivity on 50 Year Old Coal Sites (FWF)

- Switchgrass Open Pollination Study (Ornamental Plant Production & Landscape Mgt.)

- Annual Burning in Hardwood Regeneration (FWF)

- Release of Planted Oak Seedlings (FWF)

Demonstration Projects
