FULUFJÄLLET NATIONAL PARK AREA: 385 km ESTABLISHED: 2002 NEAREST TOWNS: Idre, Särna, Sörsjön and Sälen
Where other mountains rise mighty peaks of ancient bedrock, Fulufjället is brooding with its plateu of sandstone.
There are deep old-growth forests and barren heaths. Fresh headwaters fall from precipices and dig deep gorges. Clear mountain lakes reflect the reindeer moss and birch. You can walk all day here without seeing a human being. Old paths and mountain pastures tell of ancient times.
Fulufjället is boundless. Norway and Sweden meet here and become a large protected area for wildlife and nature - Fulufjellet National Park and Fulufjället National Park. The Siberian jay, our national park symbol, bids you welcome.

PEAT BOGS
OLD GROWTH FORESTS
MOUNTAIN
NJUPESKÄR
SANDSTONE1200 million years ago the sandstone was formed that makes up Fulufjället today. Even today you can see traces of the shallow sea where the sand was laid in layers. The traces are called ripple marks and look like waves in the stone.
The sandstone can range from pale pink to dark red. Green map lichen form beautiful patterns on the stones but beware, it gets very slippery when it rains. You may meet the curious stoat who lives happily among the rocks.
At 93 meters, with 70 meters of free fall, Njupeskär is Sweden’s highest waterfall. A trail to Njupeskär starts from naturum Fulufjället and is a total of 4 km long. A fairly easy hike but not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. When you have gone 1.5 kilome-tres, there is a small rest cabin with a camp-fire and a fantastic view of the waterfall. At the cabin you can choose if you want to go up above the falls. If you do, then follow the trail “Around the falls” (Fallet runt). The trail is partly very steep and rocky.
The gyrfalcon, the world’s largest falcon, sometime nests at Njupeskär. At the falls, the kestrel and common raven also often build their nests.
Hanging lichen drapes spruce bran-ches. On silver, dead pine trees you can find the poisonous, yellow-green wolf lichen. Capercaillie and black grouse play in early spring, sometimes in the middle of the road.
The king of the forest, the moose, lives here and Fulufjället is known for its large bull moose. The four large pre-dators: bear, wolverine, lynx and wol-ves are found around the mountain. If you are lucky you will see them, but they thrive deep in the woods and they would rather not meet you...
In the bog, peat moss grows. It can absorb a lot of water. Peat moss (in Swedish; white moss) ranges from light yellow to neon green and sometimes bright red, so why is it called WHITE moss? Well, when it dries it becomes white!
Here the mire is lit with golden cloudberries. If you’re down in the moss, you can also find cranberries. The common greenshank thrives here. It has long legs and a long beak, which is well suited for hunting insects in ponds in the marsh.
From naturum Fulufjället there is a 600 meterlong trail built for wheelchairs and strollers. It stretches over a large bog area and ends at a small lake with a shelter and grill area.

SLOTTET (NORWAY)
TANGÅDALEN (SWEDEN)
HIKING ROUTESBERGÅDALENSLOTTET (NORWAY)Length: 5,6 kmThe trail is marked with cairns up to the mountain and goes through sections of an old moss collection path. On the tour you can climb Fulufjellet’s highest peak, Slottet (1047 meter above sea level). Along the trail you can also take a detour to the ancient tree, Storfurua, located about 370 meter from the path.
BRYNFLÅET (NORWAY)Length: 1,4 km The trail starts at the parking lot at Storbekkåsen and passes riksröse No. 127. Moderate ascent up the moun-tain plateau. Requires good hiking boots.
RÖSJÖLEDEN (SWEDEN)... AROUND LITTLE RÖSJÖNLength: 7 km Time: 3-5 hours Difficulty: Medium-Hard
... VIA HARRSJÖNLength: 15 km Time: 4-6 hours Difficulty: Medium-Hard
... VIA LORTHÅNLength: 20 km Time: 5-7 hours Difficulty: Medium-HardGo to Njupeskär. At Njupeskär Cabin turn right toward Lorthån. Up on the mountain, in the middle of the sea of rock, turn toward Lorthån. At the next crossroads: select the longest route toward Lorthån, the somewhat shorter route toward Harrsjön or the shortest route toward Rösjön.
Here you can enjoy the bird life. The mountain lakes are home to black-thro-ated diver, red-necked phalarope and common scoter, among others. The sound of monotone piping is the golden plover telling you that you have come a little too close to its home.
The willow grouse burrow in the snow for their nightly rest and can be fairly frightening when woken by an early mor-ning skier. Even in the summer white grouse sit and roost until you nearly step on them.
Up on the mountain there are thriving mosses and lichens that do not require much nutrition. Here birch and dwarf birch intermingle with mountain black-berry and crowberry.
