Dear Alumni and Members, As I write this note, I can’t help but marvel over how far LUMUN has come. From a small student society within LUMS, to four times WorldMUN winners and finally to a society that truly has a global reach with the Eurasia MUN conference, LUMUN has shown what dedica‐tion coupled with precise organization and an emphasis on merit can achieve! I can proudly say LUMUN has achieved a lot in the past one year. This year’s LUMUN con‐ference carried a theme of “Reflection through Dialogue”, whereby delegates were en‐couraged to reflect upon issues around them and work for their resolution. Furthermore, we set up a “Social Responsibility” department which chalked out comprehensive volun‐teer programs with NGOs such as CARE Pakistan and Kashf Foundation, and created short videos to be played in committee sessions to enlist volunteers. I am happy to say that the program turned out to be a huge success. Yet, our achievements this year are but a continuation of the efforts of previous councils and members. For that, I would like to thank you all in the capacity of the current Presi‐dent! Regards, Ahmad Zaidi President 2008‐09 LUMS Model UN Society If you have any other information or suggestions regarding the archive, please contact us at [email protected])
FOREWORD
I t is always a pleasure to hear about, and support, all student initia‐tives that take not just LUMS, but also Pakistan, to reputed interna‐tional forums and reflect well on the country. The LUMS Model UN
Society (LUMUN) has been doing this consecutively for the past four years by receiving the “Outstanding Delegation” Award at the Harvard WorldMUN conferences, outshining institutions such as Oxford, Yale, UC Berkley, WestPoint Military Academy etc. From being ambassadors of Pakistan at International Model United Na‐tions (MUN) forums to organizing the largest such gathering in Pakistan every year at LUMS, LUMUN has set a benchmark for what student‐led initiatives can achieve. Last year, working from Lahore, the society co‐
hosted a conference in Geneva in co‐operation with University of Geneva students. As their ambi‐tion reflects, sky’s the limit for LUMS’ students. It is heartening to see LUMUN recognize and appreciate its alumni, to be grounded in their values and aspire for even greater achievements. I wish them best of luck for their future endeavors. Syed Babar Ali Founder and Pro‐Chancellor, LUMS
NOTE FROM THE PATRONS
I nculcating strong leadership skills in its members and at the same time remembering those less privileged at every step of the way is what makes LUMUN unique. For four years in a row, the society has
maintained its tradition of excellence by winning “Outstanding Delega‐tion’ award at the Harvard World Model United Nations. More importantly, however, they have been the ambassadors of our country abroad and with their strong commitment for peace, human rights and sustainable development; they strive to play an active role in making the dream for a better world, a reality. That is the larger goal of education and LUMS.
The whole is, at the end of the day, a sum of its parts. The sheer commitment of all LUMUN mem‐bers coupled with the boundless enthusiasm, unswerving dedication and unwavering encourage‐ment of their patron, Dr. Zaeem Jafri has brought this society the laurels that it deserves. I take this opportunity to congratulate LUMUN on the compilation of the first LUMUN Alumni Album which will also serve as a formal record of LUMUN’s achievements over the past several years. Wishing you continued success for the future. Ahmad Jan Durrani Vice Chancellor ,LUMS
LUMUN: An Overview NOTE FROM THE PATRONS
F or six years I have watched LUMUN grow from a little sapling into a mighty tree laden with juicy fruit. Exemplary commitment and consistent hard work of the LUMUN teams year after year
is the real secret behind this great success. Competing against the best institutions of the world and retaining the World Title consecutively for four years is a matter of great pride for LUMS and also for Pakistan. As Patron what I find most commendable is not the laurels that LUMUN has won but its deep sense of Social Responsibility, not forgetting the earthquake victims and the NOP in moments of glory amounts to set‐
ting a culture in gold. This has given me the greatest happiness. In my capacity as Patron of LUMUN I take this opportunity to thank everyone who volunteered to help us in so many ways. Amongst many others are Mubashrah Bano and the Accounts Department. Continuous support and encouragement throughout these years from Syed Babar Ali, Pro‐Chancellor of LUMS and Syed Zahoor Hasan, Ex Vice‐Chancellor of LUMS has been a great motivating factor in earning these accolades for the institution and the country. In spite of being very busy, Dr. Ahmad Jan Durrani, Vice Chancellor of LUMS, has shown keen interest in LUMUN’s activities. His appreciation and strong support will lead LUMUN to even greater heights, both nationally and internationally. Keep the fire burning LUMUN and keep your commitment sacred. Dr. Zaeem H. Jafri Patron LUMUN
T he strength of LUMUN lies in the commitment, dedication and passion of belief of its members. They lead by example and set new challenges continuously. It is their driving energy and quest
for excellence that draws me to LUMUN. Year after year the members un‐der the patronage of Dr. Zaeem Jafri have brought laurels to both LUMS and Pakistan. It is an honour to be part of LUMUN and work with these out‐standing students, their patron and actually all of LUMS. When it comes to LUMUN everyone becomes part of the team.
Heritage of Excellence is a beautiful showcase of achievements worth eternalizing. World champi‐ons for four consecutive years, hosting some the finest MUN Conferences in the world and setting challenging benchmarks of social responsibility are some of LUMUN’s great achievements. LUMUN Heritage will be an inspiration for young leaders in the years to come. May Allah give you the vision and passion to keep up the tradition of excellence. Amen. T he Lahore University of Management Sciences Model United Nations Society (LUMUN) was founded in 2002 by a few ambitious B.Sc. students with the aim of creating aware‐ness about global issues facing our world today while also providing a forum for young
delegates to speak their minds through meaningful and well‐informed debate. LUMUN is an entirely student‐run, not‐for‐profit organization that has organized intra‐LUMS, na‐tional and international Model UN conferences on a regular basis since its inception. LUMUN mem‐bers have participated in a large number of international MUNs and have even won the prestigious Best Delegation award multiple times at the Harvard WorldMUN conferences throughout the years. LUMUN has strived to share its experience and exposure with as many Pakistani students as possi‐ble in an attempt to pass on the valuable knowledge and skills gained by its members as a result of participating in many international conferences. One of the ways it does this is through the annual LUMUN conference in Lahore. This has grown in size and standing until it is now the largest and one of the most prestigious student conferences in South Asia. LUMUN ‘08 was attended by over 1000 delegates from all over Pakistan and abroad. At LUMUN conferences delegates assume the role of ambassadors of various countries of the world, engaging in debate on crucial issues of global concern. In the process, delegates produce standard UN format resolutions that present practical solutions to pressing international issues un‐der debate. Delegates also have an opportunity to socialize and forge life‐long associations. In addition to all this LUMUN has, in partnership with GIMUN (Geneva International Model United Nations) founded a new, independent MUN in Switzerland called the Eurasia MUN. The first Eurasia MUN conference was held in August 2008 in Geneva and was a great success.

LUMUN CONFERENCES
L UMUN was the first platform to host a Model UN Conference in Pakistan and has subse‐quently hosted its own MUN conferences at the Lahore University of Management Sci‐ences since 2004. Seeding from the ambitions and enthusiasm of LUMUN members, the
LUMUN Conference has progressed from humble beginnings to become the largest student gather‐ing of its kind in Asia. Every year, the LUMUN conference provides a platform for the future leaders of Pakistan to interact and reflect in constructive debate modeled after the United Nations. In addi‐tion to delegations from the nation’s best schools and universities, the conference also draws in a number of international delegations. Today, in part due to LUMUN’s initiative, Model UNs have spread across the length and breadth of Pakistan.
LUMUN’04 Held at the end of November 2004 at the LUMS Campus, LUMUN 04 was attended by around 400 Delegates from all over Pakistan. Head of Host Team Hassan Sherwani di‐rected this first conference, which turned out to be a huge success. Not only did it introduce the concept of Model UN simulations in Pakistan, but also laid the groundwork for all successive conferences. LUMUN’05 Held from 27th Nov – 2nd Dec 2005 at LUMS Campus, LUMUN 05 was attended by more than 600 delegates. The Head of Host Team for this conference was Sajjad Sheikh who helped LUMUN grow in size and prestige. It was a big leap from the 1st LUMUN conference in 2004 and set the grounds for becoming the largest youth related event in Pakistan. Secretary General Amna Khandekar HOHT Sajjad Sheikh Secretariat

LUMUN CONFERENCES
LUMUN’06 The 3rd LUMUN Flagship conference was a major step in the expansion of LUMUN and saw more than 800 delegates honing their diplomatic skills. President LUMUN Ammar Malik and Head of Host Team Ahmad Zaidi took LUMUN to new heights as LUMUN 2006 made it the largest youth related event in Pakistan. A special mention goes out to Syed Ali Ahmed for his significant contri‐bution in the organization and computerization of the LUMUN registration system. This was the 1st year when the post of Head of Host Team (HOHT) was incorporated into the Executive Council. Moreover, our Team LUMUN had returned from Harvard WorldMun as the “Best Delegation” for the first time.
LUMUN’07 The 4th LUMUN Flagship conference saw a participation of more than 1100 delegates and was seamlessly organized. Under the supervision of Head of Host Team Mustafa Jalil LUMUN 07 was the largest conference in LUMUN’s history. A special mention to Ms. Mubashara Bano in recognition of her help in the organization and smooth running of LUMUN 2007.

LUMUN’08 LUMUN ‘08 was the year of innovation. It was the year that LUMUN decided to revamp itself and add new dimensions to the conference: Training programs, Research Reviews, Workshops, Foreign Chairs, Bar‐Coding and Social Responsibility. This was the first year that substantial steps were taken to improve the standard of debating under the guidance of the President, Ahmad Zaidi and Vice President and Secretary General, Hamna Zubair, via compulsory Research Reviews and comprehensive training programs in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. A new feature incorporated for the first time was committee specific workshops where prominent speakers from varying spheres of life provided the delegates with further insight into their topics of discussion. The conference took a leap in its social responsibility by inviting NGOs such as Care Foundation, Kashf and Edhi Foundation to present their activities and allow delegates to sign up for volunteer work. On the organization front, bar‐coding was employed to streamline the registration and security process. Despite minor glitches, the experiment was successful and was replicated in other confer‐ences following LUMUN ‘08.

LUMUN ‐ A life experience LUMUN is not just another Model UN conference ‐ it's a life experi‐ence. Standing in the limelight of today’s news, Pakistan is where history happens. When I decided to fly to Lahore for the first time in my life, I carried in my backpack the image of a country as portrayed by my own culture. This image was dissolved in no time by what I came across: an over‐whelming atmosphere of friendliness, hospitality, and open‐mindedness, as well a thriving MUN debate, continued outside the plenary in innumerable invaluable discussions. LUMUN truly exempli‐fies the meaning of international understanding. And lastly I found out how to handle the naan!

To the hearts and minds that shaped LUMUN
O ver the course of the last 5 years, LUMUN has grown by leaps and bounds. Today, LU‐MUN represents the region’s leading diplomatic platform for youth aimed at shaping
and encouraging a cooperative world society. LUMUN is committed to training the future leaders of our world in the art of dialogue and conflict resolution, and the effort that goes behind this colossal task is both extremely difficult and extremely rewarding. LUMUN owes its success to its alumni. These men and women have weathered successive sleepless nights, juggled academics with LU‐MUN responsibilities, and often pushed their capacities past human limits to make LUMUN what it is today. This is the first time that LUMUN has taken an initiative to applaud the efforts of its alumni and to remember them and their efforts for LUMUN. We have tried very hard to compile all this informa‐tion and have taken a considerable amount of time to gather all the information and verify it. Though we have tried our best to gather as much information as possible, we would like to apolo‐gize for any omissions or mistakes in this volume. This effort was a first for us and we hope to build up onwards from here towards making a LUMUN Alumni Archive and fostering ties between all our members. We urge you all to spread this information to as many alumni as possible, and in future years we would incorporate them and make the necessary changes. In this regard we would especially like to thank Dr. Zaeem H. Jafri, Patron LUMUN, for helping us out and motivating us to collect all this information and in keeping alive the golden memories asso‐ciated with LUMUN. Regards, LUMUN Exec. Council 2008‐09
