1 Forewords Let me take this opportunity to congratulate all the faculty members and students of the department for a very successful and eventful session (2019- 2020). The biggest achievement of the department in the recent time is ac- creditation of Automotive Design Engineering program by NBA(National Board of Accreditation). There is a lot to share with you all in this issue and I am sure you all would love the reflections in all the categories. "Mechronicle" is a bigger platform of information dissemination, which provides relevant information on performances and upgradations in all its departmental programs viz. Automotive Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering and practices. Dear Colleagues and students, today we are witnessing rapid changes in the technologies. In addi- tion, the speed of technology change is much faster now than ever before. In such an era, continuous technology upgradation, and technology adoption is necessary to remain contemporary and relevant both in the industry and education sectors. We are having a keen eye and strong focus on changes around us, which necessitates certain inclusions in laboratory equipment, faculty training, syllabus up- gradation, and adoption of newer practices so as to trains the students in these new areas and impart out- come based education. We continue to attract the best students and maintained our reputation of being highly selective. As a department, we understand the importance of strong collaboration with industries on student pro- jects and internships as higher order learning- tools in solving the real life problems. We are moving for- ward with improving the research quotient of the department and having an excellent research infra- structure. The department research output has improved with the student participation on publication, projects and patents. We continue to offer many value added programs with certification Viz. lean championship and six -sigma green belt in association with ICME and FANUC SIEMENS in association with SEIMENS re- spectively. The department also does collaborative research with other prestigious university under for- eign internship program to improve overall students experience and exposure. It would not be out of place to acknowledge the efforts of faculty members and students who showed their concerns and prow- ess to tackle the challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Few worth mentioning here, are the awareness program on RED FM by Mr. Udayveer Mittal (Student-Mechatronics), The Fabric Mask and low cost ventilator design By Dr. Ashish Karn (Faculty-Mechanical), The consultancy on Automatic Hand Sanitizer design by Ms. Geetanjali and myself (Faculty-Mechanical) and more than ten other COVID-19 related notable research projects. The extraordinary student placements during a hard phase of COVID-19, is also a feather in cap for the department and worth mentioning. I would like to acknowledge the effort of all the faculty members and students which they have put into various events, activities and competitions this year both technical and non-technical events. I would also like to express my appreciation to all editorial member for their efforts and time that they have put to make this annual bulletin possible. The 2020 Auto Expo is one of the biggest motor shows across the world and has been consistently ranked among the top seven global motor shows. The motor show witnessed most of the players of the automotive industry from about 30 na-tions including China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, South Africa, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Unit-ed States of America, etc. This year, the theme of the Auto Expo is ‘Explore The World Of Mobility’. Some of the new manufacturers which will be making their debut are Great Wall Motors from China, FAW (Bird Group), EVerve, Devot Mo-tors and Nahak Motors. Some of the big-gest debuts at the 2020 edition of the Au-to Expo was Tata H2X mini SUV, new line-up from Great Wall Motors, the new-generation Hyundai Creta, the launch of the Kia Carnival MPV and a big line-up of electric cars and regular cars from MG Motor India as well. Expect some fire-works from two-wheeler manufacturers like Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd and Piaggio as well. Skoda and Volkswagen too will have a mouth-watering line up of SUVs and electric vehicles and expect Mahindra to showcase a bunch of interesting concepts and future vehicles too. In addition to this, with two working models, UPES had an impressive stall at the Expo. The first one was an electric bicy-cle which focuses on fitness by not having a fully electric mode. Instead, it has electrically-assisted pedals that can assist you for 70km. The battery takes 4 hours to charge via a regular household socket and it has programmable power settings for different users, for example, for a kid the torque and top speed will be lower while for a heavier person they can specifically bring up torque. The cycle can even have a bio-metric lock installed that will only open when user’s fingerprint matches. The second was an electric cart built to be used as transport in the campus. It cost the students Rs. 1.9 Lakh to build it. The cart uses IoT to communicate with other electronics in the campus. The students had been approached by a few companies for collaborative and sponsored projects, and hope for the same at this year’s Expo.

“Break-In” The Nitro RC racing championship 2020

The inaugural Nitro RC Championship was conducted on the 23rd and24th of Jan-uary on the sports ground of Bidholi cam-pus of UPES, Dehradun. The event was organized by the Mechanical Department of School of Engineering UPES and fea-tured a designing and performance com-petition for 1/8 scale RC Nitro Cars. The event featured a dozen teams from differ-ent colleges of India and UPES competing over the course of multiple rounds. UPES abiding by its gen-erous hospitality provided free accommodation for the duration of the event to all the participating teams and also did not charge any registration fee for the event. The event started with the inauguration cere-mony on 23 January 11 am in the Vivekanda Auditorium and featured prominent dignitaries: Chancellor, UPES : Dr. S.J.Chopra, HoD, Department of Mechanical Engineering: Dr. Ajay Kumar, Associate Dean R&D: Dr. J K Pandey Associate Dean, School of Engineering: Dr. Pankaj Sharma, Convener: Mr. Swapnil Bhurat

The prominent participating teams in the event and their affiliated institutions are mentioned below: The inauguration started with prayer to the goddess Saraswati and lamp lighting followed by words of

wisdom from Dr. Ajay Kumar and Chancellor , Dr. S. J. Chopra following the ceremony show cased the event rules and the event outlay. Following the inauguration all the participants and spectators left for the venue on the sports ground. The event grounds contained three prominent zones namely: Track Pit Stop for Participants Organisers Desk The teams were provided a window of opportunity for practice from 8 am to 11 am following which the teams proceeded into the Time trials round wherein all the participants were allowed 3 laps around the track with their best lap timing being noted down to create a rank order. Team MRC from Mumbai were the pole leaders with a time of roughly 43 seconds as the best lap time. Ensuring that the leader for Time trials directly Qualified to the Super

Six Round. The entire Championship event had some prominent events such as a live commentary desk to inform the spectators about the standings and coverage of the event. A drone team coupled with the photography team was covering the entire event to ensure that every moment was recorded in the virtual space. The remaining 10 teams battled it out in the Knockout Round based on their ranks with the rank no. 2 competing with the last ranking team and similarly for all the teams in a 1 vs 1 in a 3 lap race that saw the winners qualify for the next round.

The super six round featured the Time trials leader followed by the best performers from the Knockout Rounds and was a 1v1 race to determine 3 finalists from this round. The 3 losing teams from the knockout rounds and the 7th ranked team form the Knockouts to determine 1 wildcard entrant for the Finale of the Championship. The teams which made it to the finals were : Team RC Team MRC-O Team MRC-A Team Ryuu (Wildcard) The finale saw a simultaneous race between all the 4 teams for the course of 3 laps with additional penal-ty for exceeding the track boundaries and/or skipping the obstacles. After close call between the all the finalists the results boiled down to the difference of 2 seconds between the first placed team and the run-ner ups. The winners in order of their cumulative time including their lap timings and fouls were

The Event showcased a staggering prize pool of 95,000 INR with the winners taking home 40,000 Ru-pees, followed by the Runner-ups bagging 25,000 and the sec-ond runner ups securing 15000 rupees. All the final winners were provided a trophy and cer-tificate of appreciation along with engineering goodies that would aid their project. The top eight performers were also pro-vided a consolation Prize of 3000 INR to commemorate their valiant efforts. The prize distribution ceremony was con-cluded by a live feedback ses-sion and ‘Vote of thanks’ by the participants and the faculty ad-visors and a group photo to en-sure the memory of the event.

Sports Utsav

Mechanical department has organized their first Sports Utsav on 8th ,9th and 10th November Under the Guidance of Dr.Jitendra Yadav and Dr.Deepak Kumar. Experience True Sporting” and the main objec-tive was to encourage active participation among all students as well as to recognize individual sporting achievements. The theme of this event is to make a beautiful coordination among the student of Mechan-ical, Mechatronics and Automotive. The sports Fest began enthusiastically with a welcome speech by our

beloved HoD Dr.Ajay Kumar. He inaugurated the sports meet and briefed the importance of sports activity for the overall personality devel-opment of the person and appealed the students to have a good role model to follow on. The events were conducted by the Sports committee comprising of Mr. Himanshu Student Head co-ordinator ( UPES SPORTS CAPTAIN) and Mrs. Saranjit Yadav Student coordinator. The response from the student were good around 200 students have participated in various games. The students participated in the various events like Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Chess and Carrom.

Hitler designed the prototype of Beetle design for Volkswagen

Sitting at a restaurant table in Munich in the summer of 1932, Hitler designed the prototype for what would become the immensely successful Beetle design for Volkswagen (literally, the "car of the people"). National Faculty Development Programme (Online) on

“Technological Evolution and Implementation of Modern Tools in Automotive Engineering”

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, SoE has conducted a five day online Faculty Development Programme on “Technological Evolution and Implementation of Modern Tools in Automotive Engi-neering” from 26th June, 2020 to 30th June, 2020. The FDP was inaugurated in the august presence of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of UPES, Dr. Sunil Rai. Dr. Rai addressed the participants and shed light upon the importance of continuous development and adapting to the new normal of online teaching, learning and training for both students as well as educators. Dr. Veena Dutta, Hon’ble Registrar of UPES, while addressing the participants, emphasized on collaborative projects and trainings of the participants with UPES. The first session was delivered by Dr. Mathew Abraham, Retd. Associate Chief Engineer, Mahindra Research Valley (MRV), Chennai. Dr. Mathew talked about “Emission Technology Develop-ment to meet BS-VI and beyond Emission norms on Diesel Vehicle”. The second session of the day was on “Transport Design and Future Mobility post COVID-19” by Mr. Narendra Singh Chettri, Automo-tive Design Consultant, Germany. Mr. Chettri shared light on different stages involved in the designing of an automotive and the changes expected in automotive industry post COVID. This marks the end of Day 1 of the FDP. Day 2 (27th June, 2020) started with a session by Dr. Deepak Paul, Principal Designer, Mahindra & Mahindra on “Electric and Hybrid Vehicles”. The second session of the day was on “Alternate Fuel Applications in Gasoline and Diesel Engines” by Dr. S. S. Thipse, Sr. Deputy Director, ARAI. Dr. Thipse shared his knowledge on alternate fuels with the participants and prospects of alternate fuels in future. Mr. Prashant Goel from Poltecnico di Torino, Italy discussed the “CFD Applications in Combus-tion”. 3rd day of the FDP started with a session on “Technology Change Overview and Disruption” by Dr. Ajay Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, UPES. Mr. Caneon Ku-rien, research scholar at UPES also shared his expertise with the participants during the session. 2nd ses-sion of the day was by Mr. Pradeep C, General Manager – R&D, Force Motors. He talked about “Autonomous Vehicles”. Dr. Shyam Pandey, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, UPES started the ses-sions on Day 4 with “Utilization of Alcohol in Diesel Engine – Modified Combustion”. During this ses-sion, Mr. Ram Kunwer and Mr. Swapnil Bhurat, Assistant Professors at UPES shared their research work and encouraged participants for collaborative projects in future. The 2nd session of the day was on “Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS)” by Mr. Prateek Kakkar, Lead Engineer, Mahindra & Mahindra. Mr. Kakkar shared light on driver assistance systems in modern automobiles for driving as well as parking assistance. The last day of the FDP was stated with a session on “Unravelling Flow Physics of Transport – The interlink between automotive and other modes” by Dr. Ashish Karn, Assistant Professor, Depart-ment of Mechanical Engineering, UPES. It was followed by a session on “Technological Evolution of Electric Vehicle across the Globe” by Mr. Shivam Phutela, Supply Chain Professional, Boeing, USA. The FDP was closed with a Vote of Thanks by Ms. Geetanjali Raghav, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, UPES along with the announcement of Quiz to be conducted on 1st July, 2020. Approximately 300 participants registered for the FDP and attended the sessions throughout all five days. The qualifying Quiz was posted on 1st July, 2020 and 206 participants successfully passed the quiz to attain completion certificates. The certificates were sent to the qualified participants over mail. Feedbacks from the participants were collected for each session covering all aspects of the ses-sions, viz. relevance, key takeaways, session content, technical support, etc. Participants found the FDP very insightful and interesting, contents covered during the FDP gave them not only an insight to cur-rent technologies, but also a platform for future research endeavors. The FDP was planned and successfully convened by Dr. Shyam Pandey, Professor, De-partment of Mechanical Engineering, UPES. The team comprised of Ms. Geetanjali Raghav, Mr. Nilan-jan Bharadwaj and Mr. Prashant Shukla, Assistant Professors at UPES. UPES provided all necessary technical and administrative support in conducting the FDP. The guidance of Dr. Kamal Bansal, Profes-sor and Dean, SoE and Dr. Ajay Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, UPES were invaluable in successful conduction of the FDP.

Industry Academia Interaction

An Industry Academia interaction was held on 24/7/2020 for the en-

richment of the curriculum of B.Tech Automotive Design Engineering. This

Interaction was held in the presence of Mr. Pradeep C (GM, R&D - Vehicle

Integration, Force Motors), Dr. Ajay Kumar (HoD & Professor, Deptt. Of Me-

chanical Engineering), Dr. Shyam Pandey (Professor, Deptt. of Mechanical En-

gineering), Dr. Deepak Kumar (Professor, Deptt. Of Mechanical Engineering),

Mr. Narayan Khatri (Professor, Deppt. of Mechanical Engineering) other do-

main specific faculty. In this interaction, Mr. Pradeep C led the industry front

whereas academia front was led by Dr. Ajay.

Mr. Pradeep C is Heading ‘Vehicle Integration and Architecture’, in

Product Development for Auto and Agri sectors in FORCE MOTORS Lim-

ited , Pune. He has rich experience of association with well-known Automotive

industries like Mahinda & Mahindra, TATA Motors etc.

Mr. Pradeep has shared his expertise of automotive industry and looked at the possibility of in-

corporating the newer and emerging areas in the program curriculum of Automotive Design Engineer-

ing (ADE). He has found the proposed curriculum is focused on critical thinking with 21st century com-

munication skills and also aligned with expectations of all stake holders. We would like to thank Mr.

Pardeep and all the Professors for giving their valuable time and all the inputs, which will really help us

to make our students ready for the industry.

‘I innovate’ challenge at KPIT Sparkle 2020

ACHIEVEMENTS

KPIT Sparkle is an inno-vation platform that nurtures, mentors and supports aspiring entrepreneurs, students from the STEM (Science, Technology, En-gineering, Math) streams and connects them with incubators in the ecosystem to transform their inventive ideas into viable prod-ucts. It also encourages and facil-itates students to secure intellec-tual property for their solutions. Under its aegis, ‘I innovate’ chal-lenge received more than 3000 ideas from over 20,000 students across 1000 colleges in India.” Team Retrofit, compris-ing UPES’ Mechanical Engineering students and their faculty mentor, was shortlisted for the ‘I innovate’ challenge at KPIT Sparkle 2020, for designing a Retrofit Camera system for road safety. The students of UPES once again brought laurels for the university through their problem-solving innovation. Team ‘Retrofit’ comprising of 4th-year Mechanical Engineering students, Aviral Singh, Sambit Sarkar, Mohit Khatri and their Faculty Mentor, Mechanical Department, School of Engineering, Mr. Prashant Shukla, was shortlisted for the grand finale round of ‘I innovate’ challenge, at KPIT Sparkle 2020, Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering, Pune. The team showcased its market-ready product – a side-view retrofit camera system, useful for all

the automotive segments. The pur-pose behind this product is to elim-inate the blind spots in the side-view and rear-view mirrors by us-ing cameras and display tech-niques. Faculty mentor, an elated Mr. Prashant Shukla, said, “The showcased idea was the outcome of real incidence. Most of the four-wheeler users face the challenge of driving with broken side-view mir-rors and/or overtaking a vehicle, which is running with folded sideview mirrors. It was a great team effort, which resolved such a serious road safety issue with a simple and affordable solution.” “The developed solution,”

Mr. Shukla added, “is a market-ready retrofit kit, which can be implemented in any kind of 3-wheeler or 4-wheeler or multi-axle vehicles. I would like to thank UPES and KPIT Sparkle for providing such a big platform to display our idea among industry experts and incubators. Very soon, our solution will be certi-fied through a regulatory authority and launched into the automotive market.” Dr Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission, and former Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, was the guest of honor at KPIT Sparkle 2020. Fabric Helmet to help prevent COVID-19 Contamination

Dr. Ashish Karn, faculty at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, UPES has developed a Comfortably Vented Indige-nously Designed (COVID) Fabric Helmet for curbing infection spread in community settings such as schools, colleges and healthcare facilities The faculty of UPES proved yet again that service to hu-manity will always be the priority for an academician. Dr. Ashish Karn has developed a Fabric Helmet for the first line of defence to fight the COVID-19 infections. The proposed design has been made available to the National Innovation Foundation with a consent to distribute it to the general public at various platforms. It has also been shared with DST MyGov Innovate Portal and FISS, Assam. The nations are about to lift lockdowns and ease stringent measures in the better interest of the economy and its people. India, being no exception, after a continued stretch of a nation-wide lock-down, heads towards abating some of these restrictions, albeit a tre-

mendous undercurrent of apprehension looms high in the hearts of millions of its concerned citizens. Dr. Karn’s contribution has arrived just in time to help flatten the curve and reduce the burgeon-ing Coronavirus statistics. “There are many lingering questions, the answers to which seem elusive to the extreme. The life post lockdown is not going to be directed by predefined paradigms and may require some well-measured, prudent and cautious steps, particularly in community settings. This allusion to health and safety sounds a bit clichéd version of the rhetoric – prevention is better than cure,” said Dr.Karn, T h e r e g u l a r masks, he added, are un-comfortable and require constant adjustment. There are problems of humidity build-up inside the masks, high chances of leakage, problems with breathing, and one needs to take off the mask for ingesting liq-uids, food and medicine, even in a community set-ting or a crowded region. “To address these limita-tions,” he informed, “of the commercially availa-ble masks, a team of re-searchers from the Mul-tiPhase Flows Laborato-ry (MPFL), Department of Mechanical Engineer-ing, UPES, have pro-posed the design of a low-cost Comfortably Vented, Ingeniously Designed (COVID) fabric helmet. It is designed in such a way that usage of this cheap helmet along with the usually worn cloth is enough to provide complete protection to an individual.” The fabric helmet is integrated with many innovative design features that will not only address the concerns of the users, it will also be comfortable, cheap and ease pressure on the requirement for PPEs, thus curtailing the COVID-19 infection spread in the country. Dr.Karn believes that in the absence of a clear-cut pharmacological intervention such as a vaccine, the pandemic necessitates an active implementation of non-pharmacological interventions such as the need for a protective gear for the general public.

Automatic Hand Sanitizer Dispenser for workplace

Third-year B.Tech. Mechatronics student, Ab-hinav Mudgal, has devel-oped a touch-free hand san-itizer dispenser machine for workplaces, under the guid-ance of the faculty of Me-chanical Department Maintaining sound hygiene is the most effec-tive way of preventing the spread of infectious diseas-es. Effective hand washing is widely acknowledged to be the single most im-portant activity for reduc-

ing the spread of infections in the environment. One way of achieving this is to have a convenient auto-matic system, which will encourage people to sanitize their hands quickly with lesser effort. Keeping this in mind, Abhinav Mudgal, under the guidance of Dr. Narayan Khatri and Dr. Shyam Pandey (Mechanical Department), has created a touch-free hand sanitizer dispenser for workplaces. Talking about the inspira-tion behind this invention, Abhinav said, “I was interested in Biomedi-cal instruments as I come from a medical background at home. Upon the recommendation of my teach-ers, I started working on this pro-ject to tackle the COVID situation. It took time as raw materials and parts were shipped and delivered late due to the lockdown. But my teachers kept my spirit high by en-couraging me to complete it in the interest of the society at large.” The research team informed that the working model of the hand sanitizer is yet to be patented. The prototype includes an electrical control circuit and viable mechanical design. The ultrasonic sensor, motor, microcontroller and the transistors control the various functions of the device. The mechanical design will allow the sanitizer bottle to dispense the alcohol-based hand rub. The process will be completely touch-free and resource-conscious. The product will be available at less than half the price of similar products in the market. A faculty mem-ber said, “Against the price of products ranging between 4000-5000 INR, our product should be available in about 1500 INR, which is a big achievement. The dedication of the research team behind this product was phenomenal. Abhinav’s hard work has paid off. We knew we were doing this for the greater good.” A message for UPES by Abhinav Mudgal Amidst the lockdown and a shift to online classes, it was difficult to suddenly switch from one mode of learning to another, initially. However, when you come to think of it in the long run, it is noth-ing different than what we used to do in class. Motivation and dedication have very little to do with the medium or the channel of instruction. If you are determined to do something, you will do it despite the odds. This was my biggest learning while working on this project. I am immensely proud to be a part of UPES.”

Automatic Hand Sanitizer Dispenser

with Temperature Monitoring & Mask Detection System

The Faculty and Students of UPES continue to work towards mitigating the numerous challeng-es thrown up by the ongoing pandemic which have pushed human life towards a new normal way of liv-ing. Social distancing, wearing of face masks and intermittent sanitization of hands have already become the new way of life and will continue to be the new normal for long times to come. During the quaran-tine period, students and faculty teams in UPES have worked towards innovating various interventions towards developing effective devises which become mandatory moving ahead in times. A student – facul-ty team of the Mechanical Engineering department in UPES has developed a touch less sanitizer dis-pensing unit. Uday Veer Mittal, pursuing his B.Tech in Mechatronics at UPES under the guidance of his faculty mentors Geetanjali Raghav and Dr Ajay Kumar has developed an “Intelligent Sanitizer Dis-penser” which operates without human touch. The working prototype has been installed at the Covid Care Centre near the Maharana Pratap Sports College on Raipur Road in Dehradun.

Trivendra Singh Rawat, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand in his recent visit to the Centre wit-nessed a live demonstration of the said dispenser and appreciated the concept. Applauding the efforts of team, he encouraged them to take it to the next step of commercializing it. Speaking on this occasion Uday Veer shared that during the earlier part of lockdown period he saw the need of having contactless sanitizer dispensing unit at public places and was encouraged by his mentors to work on it. Sharing her thoughts on this occasion Geetanjali Raghav informed that an ultrasonic sensor has been used in this unit, the moment this sensor detects the presence of human hands it dispenses the preset volume of sani-tizer. The two salient features of this unit she disclosed included regulating provision of the amount of sanitizer to be dispensed out for a single use and a battery back-up provision in the event of electricity failure Dr Ajay Kumar informed that the laboratory scale model had a capacity of carrying one liter dis-penser but keeping in mind the very objective of deploying the said dispenser at public places for mass consumption the sanitizer carrying capacity was increased to five litres while developing the proto type. The cost of the proto type was Rupees 2000/= and could be further reduced in commercial production. This kind of contactless sanitizer dispensing unit will be extremely useful for establishments as they begin the unlocking operations in in the coming days. The beneficiaries could include Offices, Res-taurants, Banks, Shopping complexes, Residential Complexes Educational Institutes etc. Incubation Centre in UPES will shortly be establishing interface with Industry to scout for partners to take up commercial production of the “Intelligent Sanitizer Dispenser”.

An Automated Sanitization and Screening System for Public Transport

Team of researchers from UPES, including two students and faculty members, designed an auto-

mated detection, sanitization and screening system for fighting COVID-19 in public transport. The de-

sign system is proposed to be installed at the doorway of buses, to facilitate easy screening and sanitiza-

tion of individuals boarding them.

Sanitization of public transport is a cause of major concern for governments in these COVID-

ridden times. In a bid to facilitate sanitization post the lockdown period, researchers at UPES are endeav-

oring to come up with a solution that can facilitate easy screening and sanitization of individuals entering

the public transport. The researchers comprise Faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering,

including Geetanjali Raghav, Suraj Meshram, Nilanjan Bharadwaj and a student of B.Tech Mechatronics

Engineering Udayveer Mittal.

Geetanjali, talking about the uniqueness of the project, says, “It can be integrated with the exist-

ing transport system to sanitize with zero manual contact.” The project is in prototype phase and will be

filing for patent shortly. She

further adds, “We will develop a

prototype and apply for patent,

and once developed, we also

plan on proposing this project

to the state and national gov-

ernments for implementation in

local transport system as this is

the need of hour during lock-

down and post the COVID cri-

sis too.”

The proposed system

will consist of three sub-

systems, namely a camera to

perform object recognition to

ensure the person is wearing a

mask, an infra-red camera/ tem-

perature gun to do temperature

screening of the individual and a set of high-pressure sprays coupled with proximity sensors to detect

and sanitize the individual. Says Nilanjan, “These systems working together will ensure complete safety

of all people inside the bus. Entry will be denied to those individuals who are either not wearing a mask

or have a high temperature.”

The key objective of the project is to ensure that public transport can be resumed with limited

capacity using this system. B.Tech Mechatronics engineering students utilized their knowledge in mak-

ing this system automatic, along with mechanical components. Udayveer, who was a part of this research

team, elucidates, “As a person steps into the transport system, sensors located along the door will detect

his presence and will provide a signal to the sanitizing system to operate. Thereby, the person will be

exposed to sanitizer from top to bottom with the help of high-pressure nozzles. By this time, the movable

system attached to the doors will detect the presence of mask. If not found, a buzzer will go off to indi-

cate breach.”

The key objective of the project is to ensure that public transport can be resumed with limited

capacity using this system. It also seeks to ensure minimum risk to the people commuting through public

transport.

Dr. Shyam Pandey (Professor –Mechanical Engg. Department) has been shortlisted by MHRD as a Margadarshak. The ministry had evalu-ated 942 faculty members of top engineering schools, including the Indian Institutes of Technology and the National Institutes of Tech-nology, before shortlisting 296 professors for mentoring lesser-known institutions to help improve the standard of their curriculum. The Mar-gadarshaks would assist in training the teachers, Outcome Based Educa-tion (OBE), improving the pedagogy, focus on technical skills, life skills, innovation and creating capacity to solve problems among students, de-veloping better teaching learning, and assessment, including practicals. Co-curricular and extra-curricular components are also an integral part of the overall responsibility of Margadarshaks. In OBE, designing Pro-

gramme Outcomes (POs) for a programme and Course Outcomes (COs) for each course will also be re-quired to be done.

Dr. Ajay Kumar has been nominated as expert member of ASPIRE (Automotive Solutions Portal for Industry Research & Education). AS-PIRE his technology platform will facilitate the Indian auto industry (including OEMs, Tier 1 Tier 2 & Tier 3 companies), R&D institutions and academia (colleges & universities) to come together for R&D, tech-nology development, shop floor/ quality/ warranty issue's resolution, expert opinions etc. on issues involving technology advancements. The e-portal will act as one stop solution. Department of Heavy Industry (DHI), Govt. of India, has taken this initiative to promote innovation and to develop the related eco-system. To facilitate this initiative, DHI, through organizations under its aegis, is creating technology platforms for various sectors. In line with the recommendation by DHI, Interna-tional Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) has launched its e-Portal, named “ASPIRE”( Automo-bile Solutions Portal for Industry, Research & Education). The key objective of this initiative is “To en-hance the technological capability of Indian automotive sector through exchange of knowledge & exper-tise, in order to make them self reliant and to facilitate the growth of automobile sector and overall socio-economic progress of the country”.

In the continuation of such a great achievement Dr. Ajay has grabbed one more feather on cap, he has been nominated by Vice Chancellor as a member of the Academic Council under the head of “Professor other than the Deans by rotation in order of seniority” for the residual period i.e. September 24, 2020 till August 31, 2021. The Academic Council is the principal academic body with powers to coor-dinate and exercise general supervision over the academic policies of the University.

Under the able leadership of Dr. S. J. Chopra, Chancellor of UPES, a team of UPES faculty members including Dr. Pankaj Kumar Sharma, Professor and Associate Dean, Academic Planning and Monitor-ing, developed and patented the Neelam Multifuel Burning stove, an innovative new stove that promotes green energy while providing more efficiency, and less CO emissions than an average stove. It operates in 4 modes - pure biomass, pure biogas, pure LPG, and a combination mode. Special thought has been

given to make the device economical and accessible to the masses. Neelam Multifuel Burning Stove operates with four different modes i.e. purely biomass mode, purely bio-gas mode, purely LPG mode and a com-bined mode of biomass and either LPG or biogas. Depending on the availability of fuel, this stove has the flexibility of fuel se-lection. The Neelam Multifuel Stoves are structured with two combustion chambers , i.e., an upper combustion chamber

and a lower combustion chamber wherein the upper combustion chamber is positioned over the lower combustion chamber. These stoves are designed with the provision of producing heat out of the solid fuels within the lower combustion chamber whereas the upper combustion chamber is equipped with a removable hybrid burner kit to supply gaseous fuels to a cooking vessel. The hybrid burner kit is also provided with control mechanism to control the flow of gaseous fuels to the upper combustion chamber and subsequently to the cooking vessel. Additionally, the stoves designed according to the present sub-ject matter reduce the amount of carbon monoxide produced during combustion by 85% to lO0% (when measured from a cold start). Also, the reduction in amount of carbon monoxide consequently raises the combustion temperature of the stoves, thereby increasing the efficiency of the multifuel stoves. Further-more, this stove is low-cost, user-friendly and extremely efficient and can be used in both rural as well as urban households.

Amanat Ali, final year student of B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, class of 2016-2020, is set to pursue his Masters in Nanotechnology from National University of Science and Technology, MISIS (Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys). His Mas-ters program will be fully funded by Russian Government Scholarship. He is, in fact, one of the four students selected from UPES to pursue semester exchange program at National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University, Russia.

On the Date of 22/11/2019, one-day workshop started with a welcome speech from HOD of Mechanical Engineering to the instructor Mr. Nazim Khan (Capricot Technologies Pvt. Ltd.) who was accompanied by Ms. Priyanka Jain (ASHRAE India Chapter). The sessions started with an introductory remark from ASHRAE representative followed by an overview of Building Information Modelling (BIM) by the in-structor. The instructor discussed ASHRAE standards in BIM and use of BIM in HVAC Design/ Mod-elling/ Analysis. Various tools of BIM used in HVAC are briefed with examples. Advanced solutions and design tools were discussed along with basic modelling of ducting and piping, heating/ cooling load cal-culations etc. The instructor has also encouraged the students to take BIM as a career option and future scopes of BIM and design tools in industry. The workshop was attended by approximately 60 students of B.Tech – Mechanical, ADE and Mechatronics Engineering and the students have found the workshop very informative and up to date.

The Technical event ‘CADEMICS’ organised by UPES ASME Student Section in collaboration with ASME DTU Student Section from June 26, 2020 –June 29. 2020. The event was led and exe-cuted successfully by our events heads Shivam Bhatt and Rishabh Thakur. The event was the part of one of the best technical event under UPES ASME Student Section. The main objec-tive of this event is to test students’ knowledge and their creativity in field of engineering and designing. The event was made more interesting and successful enough to attract as 78 teams and 110 participants across all over India including universities like UPES, DTU, NIT, BITS, SMVIT, Thapar, etc. CADEMICS an online technical event done on CAD software according to the skills of students in specific software, the

students would participate as individual or as a team of two. The competition consists of a single round only with a time limit of 72 hours. The participants have to make a CAD model on the given problem assigned to them. Par-ticipants also have to submit their STEP or IGES file and a small report on the designed model. The judges for the events are the experts in the field of CAD software from the department of mechanical engineering, UPES are Mr. Prashant Shukla and Mr. Sachin Sharma. The winners were encouraged with e-certificate and a cash prize of INR 3000. The top twenty par-t i c i p a n t s were also given Certif-

icate of Merit as a token of encouragement. The winners of the events are Team Mechie form BITS Pilani, Goa Campus and second and the third winner are Team Consilo and Team Gaurav. DIALECTICA “an online debate”

The first event held on 29th Aug, 2020 by our society IEI was DIALECTICA an online debate. The event was all about communication , vocabulary and presentation skills of participants. Many of us are experienced with offline Debate competition but online mode creates a little more pressure as it’s the new normal. In this event,total participants i.e. 43were divided into groups, each group consisting of 6 mem-bers. After this, for every group a topic was given and 3 minutes time to prepare was allotted, and the first participant of the group had the choice to whether go and speak in favour or against the topic and the rest were asked to switch(for/against) by the Judges. Moving on to the final round , one participant from each group i.e. 7 participants were selected on the basis of their performance. Final round was same as previous one. The platform for competition was GOOGLE MEET.
