7. Research Achievements/Innovations:

(List five in bullet form, not more than 3 lines each) For Period of report i.e., April, 2011 to Feb, 2012

a) Baseline survey has been finalized in all 15 villages of 5 clusters in Raigad district of

Maharashtra with cluster wise coverage is 35.02%, 7.88%, 16.32%, 15.33% & 2 5.46% respectively (when, n=711). Indigenous and traditional knowledge and other coping strategies were documented from surveyed households. Awareness created among surveyed fishers regarding utility of PFZ advisories. Training need assessment of stakeholders in relation to climate change and adaptive measures was done in surveyed clusters. Mid-term survey is under progress.

b) Sensitized NGO/SHG/Society chairmen and representatives in all 15 villages for GPRS

activation and lead person identification prior to launch workshops cum training programs organized with respect to ‘m-KRISHI®- Service (Gappa Goshti) at Neral and ‘m-KRISHI® Fisheries Service at Alibaug for agriculture and fisheries clusters respectively.

c) Strengthened linkages with partner organizations, district administration, disaster

management authority of the district. New synergy developed with Centre for Social Action, Alibaug (NGO). In addition to m-KRISHI®-Fisheries Service’ stakeholders and NGO partners have been sensitized for adoption of proposed technologies like Solar fish dryers, efficient, hygienic and portable wheeled ice-boxes, advance packaging machine, value addition and ornamental fish raising etc. for sustainable livelihood options in present and future climate change scenario.

d) Participated in meetings with local fishermen held in villages namely Gorai, Manori,

Chowk, Uttan, Madh with an objective of propagating livelihood interventions suggested under NAIP in neighboring district and sensitizing fishers regarding importance and availability of such interventions in climate change scenarios.

e) Regular PFZ advisories and Wind Advisories are being generated from website of

INCOIS, Hyderabad and feedback of ‘m-KRISHI®-Fisheries Service’ from the beneficiaries is regularly taken into account. Field validation of the efficiency of the technology has been done and has been widely covered by local regional and national media.

8. Salient achievements/innovations: (List two achievements with half page write-up and high resolution photographs- jpg format)

a) Launch of ‘m-KRISHI® Service (Gappa Goshti) at Neral and ‘m-KRISHI® Fisheries

Service at Alibaug for agriculture and fisheries clusters respectively.

Fishers and farmers in all 15 villages of 5 clusters were trained to use GPRS activated mobiles and two launch workshop cum training programs for operation of ‘m-KRISHI® Service (Gappa Goshti) for agricultural clusters and ‘m-KRISHI® Fisheries Service for fisheries clusters were successfully organized at Neral and Alibaug respectively. Participants for workshops were around 20 at Neral and around 40 at Alibaug; out of which immediate beneficiaries for mobile handsets with above mentioned services were 5 at Neral and 13 at Alibaug. After launching the mobile handsets fishers and farmers received training from experts for using the services. Release of CDs, Training manuals and presentations were part of the workshop. Responses of the participants were as desired and in line with targeted objectives.

b) Sensitization of fishers in neighboring district regarding availability and use of

livelihood interventions for climate change mitigation. Popularization of project technologies was done at villages in neighboring district viz. Gorai, Manori, Chowk, Uttan, Madh for sensitizing local fishers regarding importance and availability of livelihood interventions suggested under NAIP project work in Raigad district as mitigating measures in climate change scenario. It has provided strong boost in propagating the project work in neighboring district and to sensitize large no of fishers (i.e. 743 nos.). Livelihood interventions being propagated in the target district were taken well by the fishers.

c) PFZ forecasting and validation cruises for sea-truthing: Sea truthing of increased catch in PFZ area was done by undertaking validation cruise and CPUE of 35 kg was recorded against 17 kg from non PFZ area. Presently 1296 numbers of motorized and mechanized boats are operating in selected 13 villages consuming approximately 200 lakh liters of diesel per year. It is estimated that after following the advisories provided through ‘m-KRISHI®-Fisheries mobile service’ and fishing accordingly in PFZ areas will save approximately 50% of this diesel (i.e. 100 lakh liters of diesel per year). Currently 5% of the fishers in selected villages are using the technology which in turn leads to saving of 5 lakh liters of diesel per year costing around Rs. 250 lakhs/year. The government of Maharashtra is providing 23% of subsidy on the cost of diesel as Tax to fishers. This costs around Rs.52.35 lakh/year to the government for the selected clusters.
