Founded in 1948 by Dr. Modesto Apolo Ramírez, Apolo

Attorneys initially specialized in labor law, defending companies

in the tense climate of labor-management relations at that

time. When Dr. José Modesto Apolo, the founder’s son, joined

the firm, the practice successfully diversified into other areas,

especially maritime law, maritime labor law, port law, customs

law and foreign trade. In the last decade, our firm has been

just as successful in developing the practice of corporate,

insurance, immigration, administrative, tax, business, aviation,

environmental, aquaculture and fisheries law, as well as dispute

resolution, including litigation and arbitration.

As pioneers in the practice of maritime law in Ecuador, we

provided legal advice on the establishment of all the trade

associations representing shipping and port operations in the

country: the National Association of Shipowners of Ecuador

(ASONAR), the National Association of Shipping Agents of

Ecuador (ASONAVE), the Maritime Chamber of Ecuador (CAMAE)

and the Association of Private Port Terminals of Ecuador (ASOTEP).

During the wave of port modernization that swept through

South America in the 1980s and ‘90s, the firm was instrumental

in initiating and fostering port modernization measures in

Ecuador and played a pivotal role in the country’s port authority

reorganization and public port concessioning processes, as well

as in a major agreement with the large vessel longshoremen of

the Port of Guayaquil.

When shrimp farming started to develop in Ecuador, the Apolo

firm ventured into the area of aquaculture law and currently

advises the country’s three largest shrimp exporters, whose

combined export sales reached over one billion dollars in 2014.

We have handled the legalization of nearly 75,000 acres of shrimp

farms and now provide services to aquaculture industry concerns

holding around 40% of the area under cultivation.

At Apolo, we believe in training, specialization and the sound

combination of experience with generational change. Thus, most

of the members of Apolo’s professional team hold master’s or

doctoral degrees and many are university professors committed

to training new generations of professionals in this increasingly

demanding career.
