We welcome Archbishop Charles C. Thompson as he joins us to preside at and preach the 10a Mass to begin Catholic Schools Week and to recognize the 150 th Anniversary of Catholic Education in our parish. The whole parish is invited to a reception in the parish gym to meet the Archbishop and celebrate the 150 th . Q: Father, last week you mentioned that sometimes people might not attend Mass at St Mary? What if a person just skips Mass? Or what would be a legitimate reason to miss Mass? A: Intentionally skipping Mass on a given Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation is considered a Mortal Sin. It is contrary to our moral and spiritual obligation to Christ and His Church. It is to imply that something else (such as sports, sleep, or selfish purposes) is ‘more important’ than our relationship to God and to our fellow Catholic Christian Community. Missing Mass is serious. If you intentionally and knowingly skipped Mass, you should avail yourself of the Sacrament of Reconciliation before you present yourself again for the reception of Holy Communion. Ideally, one would attend Mass at their regular home parish to support and sustain their local Catholic Community. But, if that is not possible, due to the universal nature of the Catholic Church, one may attend the local community where one finds one’s self. To find a local time where you will be, try: MassTimes.org. The Church does recognize there may be some legitimate reasons why a person may not attend Mass. A few legitimate reasons are: extreme weather, which makes travel unwise or unsafe; serious sickness or frailty of self or someone under your care; essential work or labor that prevents you from making Mass (if this is a normal occurrence for you, please discuss with your pastor), required travel that prevents you from making Mass (when you know this ahead of time, please discuss with your pastor to receive a dispensation). Q: Father, I know it’s important to go to Mass, but sometimes I go to ‘church’ with a non-Catholic Christian friend. This counts for my Sunday duty, right? A: Wrong. If you’ve attended a non-Catholic liturgy, you no doubt noticed some differences (and some similarities). Generally, we both value the Sacred Scriptures, preaching, and music. Some of our non-Catholic Christian brothers and sisters even have a form of a communion service; however, lacking valid orders and continuity to the Apostolic Tradition, non-Catholic Christians do not believe in the Real Presence nor have the Real Presence in the Most Holy Eucharist. As a Catholic, your duty to God requires you to participate each week in the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, ideally at your own home parish community. Q: When I need to attend a non-Catholic Christian liturgy to support a friend or family member in some important life event, should I receive their ‘communion’? The minister said I could. A: While a non-Catholic Christian minister may permit you to receive their ‘communion,’ your Catholic Christian faith requires you to refrain. Doing so would be to say by your action that we have a unity of faith and belief, which we do not possess. You should not receive.
