THE PROJECT OF CODEVASF
BUSINESS PROPOSAL
As we saw earlier, the Federal Government has provided this region as a project of Codevasf (Development Company of the São Francisco Valley), established in 1974, to take advantage of the economic potentials of the São Francisco river and its tributaries. Aimed at generating employment and income using irrigation as the means of development of the regions involved, and especially Bahia, where nowadays the clusters of Juazeiro and Petrolina are distinctive.
Two cooperatives from the states of Parana and Rio Grande do Sul are exploiting an area of more than 4,942 acres of the Cavendish bananas for the export market, which reinforces also a promising cluster of opportunities. Based on figures from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Development, the state of Bahia has seen a growth and evolution of the qualitative and quantitative indicators of excellence of this sector.
