ELKINS HIGH SCHOOL. Demonstrating their charitable

spirit, Elkins High School foot-ball players and coaches held their annual toy drive to benefi t students at Lantern Lane Elemen-tary School. Students and staff at Elkins generously donated more than 100 toys. The Elkins football team delivered the toys to Lantern Lane students who were identi-fi ed by teachers as ideal candi-dates to receive gifts. The players fi lled empty tables in the school’s computer lab with the toys and allowed each child to select up to four toys. A drawing was also held to award a bicycle to one lucky student.

Five young men, all seniors at Clements High School, were recognized for their Eagle rank at Troop 1631 Court of

Honor on Dec. 8. Troop 1631, the fi rst troop chartered in First Colony over

30 years ago, has helped 145 boys achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. The Troop meets Monday nights at Fort Settlement

By BARBARA FULENWIDERThere’s nothing quite as sat-

isfying as spending money on something that will repay it through the ages. New edu-cation facilities, for instance, are like that. Kids who won’t be born for decades yet will progress and prosper because taxpayers today saw fi t to en-hance, improve and build new, farsighted educational facilities.

Stafford residents approved a $49.9 million bond referendum in 2011 to turn aging facilities at Stafford Municipal School Dis-trict into head turning facilities aimed at advancing educational opportunities.

Three years later, Super-intendent Lance Hindt stood before city council members to tell them that their citizens’ investment has already begun to pay off even though not all is completed quite yet.

With most of the new build-ings, etc., built and being used now, Hindt said, “What I have found (this semester) is our at-tendance is up, the discipline rate is down and our passing rates are higher. What that tells me is good things are occurring. The kids want to come to school because they are enjoying the instruction.

“I think the culture and cli-mate of SMSD have changed. What I have noticed this year is our kids have a new competitive attitude. They believe they can compete with anybody and we want them to think that way. To sum it up in one word, our kids are proud, proud of the facility

and proud to attend SMSD.”What the $41,722,803 in

bonds have built/bought so far is a new 92,000 square foot addition to the high school, 12 classrooms to accommodate the growing enrollment of pri-mary school students, covered sidewalks, newly roofed gyms, drainage improvements, ten-nis courts, security system and camera upgrades, new heating and cooling upgrades, new technology, 12 buses, a new cafeteria, athletic practice fi eld improvements and a state of the art library that is open to stu-dents and residents until 8 p.m.

Hindt said he told his board at every one of their meetings that the construction projects were “on time, on schedule and on budget.” He also said the

“mother lode” of $33.65 million was for high school improve-ments and the additional 92,000 square foot building.

The superintendent also high-ly praised the Margaret Havens Library and media center and

described it as the focal point of the campus. He noted that it includes numerous comput-ers, “lots of fl ex areas, bagels, doughnuts and coffee at night and an on-duty police offi cer” there until closing.

“We wanted to provide a col-lege like environment on our 77 acres. We are now encouraging our teachers to take their kids outside and use the numerous outdoor flex areas we have,” Hindt said.

He also said there are numer-ous fl ex areas in the new addi-tion to the high school. It is used for numerous academies SMSD offers, and Hindt said the two most popular are culinary arts and health science. “Our acad-emies often use the fl ex space on the fl oor. They’ll do mock lessons out on the fl oor where students may teach the class. There’s a full nursing station, just like what you’d fi nd in a hospital, and one of the largest areas is an actual courtroom and law library. There’s also a business lab.”

Hindt said all the labs are glassed in so “you can see what’s going on. There are some enclosed spaces but the majority are open. The new high school wing is a top of the line facility. Anyone who wants a tour should just call me,” the superintendent said.

Contracts on the new build-ings and improvements began on Sept. 1, 2011, with final completion due Sept. 30 this year. “We still have some punch list items and some little things

we need to do but we’ve gotten everything done that the bond referendum called for and a little bit more.”

He said that when all is said and done he expects there to be

“between $2 and $3 million left over.” He noted that thanks to the way the bonds were written there is some fl exibility on how the money can be spent.

After Hindt fi nished his pre-sentation he got kudos all around from various council members.

Councilman Cecil Willis said, “What you have presented tonight is almost the fi nal culmi-nation of the purpose, the intent, the enhancement, the elevation of SMSD. With the facilities we now have, this model has created some opportunities for other activities outside the normal 7 to 4 academic setting.”

He said what he wants coun-cil to do is see how to “take it to the next level” regarding aca-demics and athletics. Because SMSD is a municipal rather than an independent school district, city receipts help support vari-ous aspects of it and in return citizens get to use some parts of their investment in education.

Willis noted that “for numer-ous summers we could use the (SMSD) outside facilitie, so we’ve made some progress but there is a tremendous opportu-nity with these facilities to do something that will benefi t the youth and adults of Stafford even more. There are a number of opportunities to use these facilities.”

Investment in schools paying off, says SMSD superintendent

The Avid Golfer Houston 2013 annual rankings have been released and the Quail Valley Golf Course was well represented in the recognitions. The El Dorado Course was recognized as the second best intermediate-priced courses. It was bested only by Memorial Park Golf Course.

The write up says, “the El Dorado Course at Quail Val-ley Golf Club was left for dead until actions were taken and Jeff Blume renovated the golf course. It also helped transform the Quail Valley community back into a residential hot spot”. The La Quinta Course was rec-ognized as the third best course in the Value Priced (under $40) category.

The article stated, “The El Dorado Course might get all the love at Quail Valley, but the La Quinta Course is also a worthy golf option. In fact, the regulars prefer this course since it is a fairer test and less congested”.

Finally, the El Dorado Course was recognized as #1 Best Value Under $50.

“The El Dorado Course at Quail Valley Golf Club and the Kingwood Cove Golf Club…it’s still amazing that these two charge less than $50 for a weekend morning round.”

Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees President, Jim Rice, joined 32 other school board members from across Texas November 21-23 at the second session of the Leadership TASB class of 2014.

Selected by the Texas As-sociation of School Boards (TASB), the group is partici-pating in a yearlong education leadership study program.

These trustees represent school districts of all sizes, with student populations of 161 to 202,000, and refl ect a similar range of property wealth.

Participants who complete all required elements of the study will graduate next year by earning Master Trustee status. This is the highest designation recognized by TASB.

Meeting in Austin, the trust-ees heard featured speakers State Representative Tryon D. Lewis and Bill Graham, of Graham Corporate Communi-

cations. Lewis offered his per-spective on successful advocacy techniques including appropri-ate timing, key offi ce staff to know, and effective practices.

Keynote speaker Graham, a nationally recognized trainer in effective communication, provided the group with tips on effective strategies for contacts with policymakers. His client list includes numerous political candidates, corporate execu-tives, and university classes.

In addition to hearing speak-ers, participants visited West ISD and Austin ISD’s Eastside Memorial High School.

Other Leadership TASB ses-sions are scheduled for Corpus Christi, February 27- March 1; El Paso, April 10-12; and Fort Worth, June 26-28.

Each session has a unique theme that builds on the previ-ous session and features nation-ally recognized experts in the fields of leadership develop-

ment and education. Teams also work throughout

the year on extended learning assignments between meetings. Created in 1993, Leadership TASB has more than 700 gradu-ates to date. The current class is sponsored in part by H-E-B.

TASB is a voluntary, non-

profi t association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school districts.

School board members are the largest group of publicly elected offi cials in the state.

The districts they represent serve more than 4.9 million school students.

By BASIL HOUSEWRIGHT, JR.With almost every wind or

rainstorm, insurance agencies receive calls involving roof leaks. Many of the roof leaks are the result of maintenance issues. Roof coverings and seals consist of many compo-nents.

Several of these compo-nents may require periodic maintenance in order to con-tinue to serve their intended purpose of keeping the rain from leaking into your home. Most typical roofs on homes have fl ashing in the valleys and slopes of the roof.

Flashing is also used around chimneys, which stick up through the roof. Much of this

fl ashing is sealed with the use of roofi ng tar materials. This is a soft pliable material, which is applied to the areas around fl ashing to assist in sealing out the elements. This roofi ng tar material hardens and cracks with age and must be periodi-cally reapplied in order to pre-vent roof leaks.

The roof shingles and fl ash-ing are also nailed down to the wooden roof decking be-low the shingles in many ar-eas. These nails loosen and may even come out over time. These nailed areas of the roof’s shingles and fl ashing need to be re-nailed periodi-cally in order to prevent roof leaks.

Care must be taken to prop-erly nail roofi ng materials, as nails driven in open areas will create leaks. It is suggested a “roofi ng repair specialist” be

used to make such repairs. There are many pipes,

which stick up through the roof. These are vent lines for your plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems. The vent pipe usually is installed with a lead or rubber seal, which fi ts under the roofi ng material to form a watertight seal. If these are not properly installed leaks can occur. Also over time the material the vent

seals are made of may harden and crack and allow water to leak through the roof. Also animals such as squirrels have also been know to cause dam-age to these seals. The seals may require periodic repairs or replacement to prevent leaks.

Some homes are outfi tted with devices to ventilate the attic area of your home. These may be wind turbines or pow-ered ventilators. These venting devices also have some type of seals around them. Over time these seals may weather and deteriorate which necessitate repair or replacement.

Some homes have skylights installed through the roof. These skylights have seals, which may weather and dete-riorate which necessitate re-pair or replacement.

During the heavy rain and windstorms we experience, roofs can leak for the above mentioned reasons.

The fi rst thought of the homeowners is my roof is damaged and needs replace-ment. Many times the roof requires only minor and inex-pensive repairs as mentioned above, however if ignored and allowed to leak even so slight-ly over time, major damages can be caused.

It is our recommendation you have a qualifi ed “roofi ng repair specialist” inspect your home’s roof every 2–3 years. More often as the home ages and the roof becomes older. Problems can be detected and corrected very inexpensively if performed as preventive maintenance.

The cost of these minor preventive maintenance pro-cedures are often much less than your deductible you will have to pay if you allow your roof to leak and cause major damage.

Roofs are like any other piece of equipment on your home, you can take care of it and it will serve you well or you can ignore it and some-day it will let you down, usu-ally during a heavy rainstorm.

Families opting to live in Fort Bend since the booming late 1980s and 1990s have turned the east side of the county into a suburban me-troplex of prosperous towns. As the county has grown so has the chapter of the county’s Women Council of Realtors (WCR), a network of suc-cessful Realtors empowering women to exercise their po-tential as entrepreneurs and industry leaders.

The local WCR now boasts 127 members whose vision is to use their “infl uence as suc-cessful business profession-als” to “effect positive change in the profession and in the broader community.

The chapter’s mission is “to strive to provide timely, ac-cessible programming, great networking and opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Women’s Council mem-bers send and receive referrals with confi dence, knowing that their values are shared when it comes to providing outstand-ing service to their clients.”

Leaders of WCR also “en-courage members to get in-volved because we know that participation translates to per-sonal growth and leadership development. We meet you where you are in your skill de-velopment and take you to the next level.”

Members of WCR, Fort Bend Chapter, not only sup-port one another but also those in need in their community. They hold various fund raisers

throughout the year and one that is held annually in July supports Fort Bend ISD stu-dents in need of school sup-plies.

Another Fort Bend group that gets WCR’s ongoing sup-port is the women’s center, which opened in Fort Bend in 1980.

Its mission is to assist sur-vivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children.

Funds WCR donates to the women’s center helps provide a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, rape crisis services, food, clothing, emergency and basic medical services, counseling, transportation, case management, legal ac-companiment and advocacy, children’s programs, learning resources, computer training,

job readiness, fi nancial man-agement, parent and self-es-teem workshops, community outreach and education and aftercare services.

In more than 30 years of serving the community the Fort Bend County Women’s Center has helped more than 35,000 women and children achieve a violence-free life-style and the WCR has been an ardent supporter every step of the way.

Their support of less for-tunate women as well as pro-fessional Realtors stems from the belief of the organization’s leaders that positive change comes from the greater inclu-sion of women’s perspectives in positions of infl uence in the real estate industry and in the broader community.

The Fort Bend County Women’s Center recently received a $2,800 donation from the Fort Bend chapter of Women’s Council of REALTORS. L to R: Amber Paaso from the Wom-en’s Shelter received a check in the amount of $2,800 from Kimberly Shaw WCR President for 2013 and Theresa Fehr incoming WCR President for 2014.
